Xiaoyan, a volunteer in Guangzhou, has a deep love for nature. That love started when she was 14. One day, she looked through her teacher’s telescope (望远镜) at a bird. What she saw surprised her—the bird was so beautiful. That moment touched her deeply, and she decided to learn more about nature.
Now, Xiaoyan works as a volunteer, taking children and teenagers on nature tours of wetlands and parks around Guangzhou. She wants them to feel the same sense of wonder that she felt as a child. What’s more, she hopes her work can help more people see the true value of nature, inspiring them not only to enjoy its beauty but also to take action to protect it.
Xiaoyan is one of 700 volunteers in a project started by the Guangzhou Green City Environmental and Cultural Development Center (GZGC). Through training courses, the organisation aims to improve volunteers’ ability to protect the environment. Over the past two years, a number of training courses have been organised to help volunteers learn about local plants and animals, and how to protect them.
To recognise the volunteers’ hard work, the organisation uses a digital system to record their work and gives awards to its most active volunteers. Xiaoyan is one of them. She says the best part of volunteering is meeting friends who love nature as she does and passing her knowledge to young people. “Volunteering gives me hope for the future. I hope more young people can join me and together we can work to make our city a better place,” Xiaoyan adds.

In a recent discovery, archaeologists (考古学家) found the ruins (废墟) of an important ancient city! These ruins, found in Baliqiao, Henan, are about 3,700 years old. They are from the Xia Dynasty, which is the earliest known dynasty in China. This discovery helps fill in some pieces of history and helps us see the bigger picture of the Xia Dynasty.
The Baliqiao ruins are large, covering about 1.35 million square metres. So far, archaeologists have dug up around 1,800 square metres since they started their work in 2022. They found many interesting things, like walls, roads, and even pottery (陶器), which show that people there were skilled and had a rich culture.
What makes the Baliqiao ruins even more exciting is its connection to another place called the Erlitou ruins, which people discovered in 1959 and are known for helping us understand the early days of China. Researchers believe that the culture of the Xia Dynasty spread far and wide, including Baliqiao. Liang Fawei, an archaeologist, explained that the objects found at both places are very alike, showing the influence (影响) of the Xia Dynasty on the Baliqiao area.
Nowadays, as researchers continue to dig at the Baliqiao ruins, we can look forward to more treasures from the past. They may help us understand how ancient people lived, what they believed in, and how the Xia Dynasty shaped early China. With each new find, they’re piecing together the story of ancient China.

The Dead Sea is one of the most unusual natural places on Earth. Unlike common seas, it has almost no living things. That’s why it’s called “the Dead Sea”. It is located between Jordan and Israel, in the dry part of the Middle East. It’s surrounded (围绕) by rocky hills. That adds to its unique landscape.
The Dead Sea is about 605 square kilometers, but its size isn’t always the same. It changes a little each year. This is mainly because of changes in rainfall; less rain means less water flowing into the sea. Also, towns and farms near it need more and more water. The deepest part of the Dead Sea is about 1,300 feet, so it’s one of the deepest salty lakes in the world.
The Dead Sea has a high salt level, about 8 times saltier than the ocean. This high salt content (含量) creates strong buoyancy (浮力). So people float easily on its surface even if they can’t swim. For many years, this has attracted millions of visitors from all over the world. Some come to experience the fun of floating.
Sadly, the Dead Sea is facing a big problem: it is becoming smaller and smaller. Every year, its surface level drops a little. Protecting this natural wonder has become more important than ever.
27.Why is the sea called “the Dead Sea”
A.Because it has rocky hills around it.
B.Because it has almost no living things.
C.Because it is in the dry Middle East.
D.Because its salt level is very high.
28.The underlined word “float” in Paragraph 3 means “________”.
A.漂浮 B.跌落 C.淹没 D.冲浪
29.Which of the following is TRUE about the Dead Sea
A.Only local people visit it.

C.Its surface level rises a little every year.
D.Its salt level is much higher than the ocean.
