David Austin, one of the world’s most famous rose breeders, passed away peacefully at home in 2018 at the age of 92. He left behind a legacy that has changed gardens across the globe.
Austin grew up on a farm in Shropshire, England. His love for roses began by chance during his school years. While looking through the school library, he found a gardening magazine with pictures of old roses. “Aren’t they beautiful ” he remembered thinking. “They had a beauty that modern roses didn’t have.” That moment was the starting point of a love affair with roses that would last more than seventy years.
In the 1950s, Austin began breeding roses with a bold vision. He wanted to create a new type of rose that combined the beauty, fragrance and toughness of old roses with the repeat-flowering ability and wide colour range of modern ones. The result was a new group of roses he called English Roses, which became his life’s work.
His first success came in 1961 with a rose named ‘Constance Spry’. More new varieties followed steadily over the following decades. Among them, ‘Graham Thomas’ became particularly famous. It received the highest award of the Royal National Rose Society and was later voted into the RHS Hall of Fame.
Austin received many honours, including the Victoria Medal of Honour and an OBE for his services to horticulture. Yet in spite of his international fame, he remained a modest family man. He was married for 68 years and loved nothing more than to sit in his garden with his wife.
Even into his 90s, Austin could still be found in the fields, carefully examining new seedlings. His son later described him as “a plantsman through and through” who had “an extraordinary eye for a rose”.
David Austin once said, “I hope I have made a contribution to the world of roses. I think I have been able to bring something new.” His story reminds us that a lifetime commitment to what we love can create something truly beautiful—and that legacy will live on in gardens for generations to come.
24. What first aroused David Austin’s interest in roses
A. Working on his family’s farm.
B. Reading a magazine at school.
C. Visiting a famous rose garden.
D. Receiving an award for breeding.
25. What was unique about the English Roses created by Austin
A. They only flowered once per season.
B. They were grown only in Shropshire.
C. They had no fragrance compared to old roses.
D. They combined strengths of old and modern roses.
26. What can we learn about David Austin from the text
A. He preferred work over personal life.
B. He stopped breeding roses in his old age.
C. He was modest but difficult to work with.
D. He remained humble despite his reputation.
27. What message does the author convey in the last paragraph
A. Success comes from a bold vision rather than effort.
B. Devotion to one’s passion can create lasting value.
C. Global fame is the driving force of achievement.
D. Family support is necessary for one’s career.

Cadmium (镉) is one of the most poisonous heavy metals. It accumulates in crops and enters the human body through the food chain. Long-term exposure can cause kidney damage and even cancer. Once soil is polluted, the problem persists for decades because cadmium does not break down naturally.
For years, scientists have used biochar—a material made by baking plant waste at extremely high temperatures—to trap cadmium in soil. However, this process is expensive and energy-intensive.
Now, an international research team has developed a budget-friendly alternative called “oxychar”. Instead of using extreme heat, they used a low-temperature partial-oxidation process to treat rice straw. This method is energy-efficient and produces over 55% usable oxychar.
The team tested the new material in contaminated environments. They found that adding ammonia (氨) to the mix actually increased oxychar’s ability to lock away cadmium. While standard oxychar uses certain chemical groups to capture the metal, the addition of ammonia creates nitrogen-rich (富含氮的) groups that act like chemical super-glue, forming strong bonds to keep cadmium from leaking back into the soil.
The results were impressive. Biochar could only hold about 31.7 mg/g of cadmium. The newly engineered oxychar pushed that capacity up to 53.8 mg/g. During a 20-day soil test, the treated soil achieved a 69.3% cadmium immobilization (固化) rate, effectively preventing crop roots from absorbing the poisonous metal.
Perhaps most encouraging was the recovery of soil life. The team recorded a nearly 50% increase in microbial activity on the very first day of treatment—a clear sign that the amount of cadmium in soil had dropped sharply.
The economic evaluation shows that switching to oxychar reduces costs by $120 to $310 per ton compared to standard biochar. The researchers believe this technology provides a highly workable and affordable solution for cleaning up the world’s contaminated farmland.
28. What is a major disadvantage of traditional biochar
A. It cannot trap cadmium effectively.
B. It is costly and uses a lot of energy.
C. It causes further pollution to soil.
D. It takes a very long time to produce.
29. How does adding ammonia improve oxychar’s performance
A. It reduces the use of raw rice straw.
B. It helps plants to take root in the soil.
C. It creates stronger chemical bonds to trap cadmium.
D. It transforms cadmium into a less poisonous compound.
30. What does the underlined word “contaminated” in paragraph 4 most likely mean
A. Purified. B. Polluted. C. Improved. D. Worsened.
31. What is the text mainly about
A. A workable solution to global pollution.
B. An effective but ungreen way to improve soil.
C. An efficient way to get rid of Cadmium in the soil.
D. A promising and economical method to treat polluted soil.
D
Stages of sleep were discovered in the 1950s and 1960s, when researchers recorded brain activity in sleepers all night long. Scientists quickly discovered that there were different types of sleep. Deep, or ‘slow wave sleep, comes before periods of lighter sleep. Also, a period of dreaming called "rapid eye movement" or REM always came in the last part of a "sleep cycle".
Human sleep cycles last an hour and a half, which is why we tend to sleep in multiples of ninety minutes. If you count the number of hours you sleep tonight you will see this to be true.
Today it is generally accepted that deep sleep repairs the body, while REM repairs the mind. Interestingly, these same sleep patterns, deep sleep, light sleep, and REM, have been found in every warm-blooded creature on earth. As well as repairing the brain, REM is strongly involved in growing it. That’s why all warm-blooded creatures with complex brains have more REM when they are young than when they are mature.
Throughout history, cultures have developed systems to interpret dreams and tried to find messages in them that can give information about the future. For example, some people believe that to dream of diamonds is a good omen: for men it means wealth, and for women it means marriage! People have been inspired by dreams to paint, write poetry, and create philosophies. Sometimes the course of human events has been changed as the result of a dreamer acting on his or her dreams.
When we are asleep, our memory suffers. This explains why we typically don’t remember much, aside from the occasional dream, from our usual seven or eight hours of sleep. When we are asleep we also lose our sense of time. Why Because there’s no one “there” to notice its passing.
An exception to this absence of sense of time occurs during lucid dreams. A lucid dream is defined as a dream in which the dreamer is aware he or she is dreaming while the dream is occurring. Lucid dreams are rare, but they give us fabulous glimpses into the mystery of sleep.
32. What do we know about the sleep cycle
A. Lighter sleep appears after REM.
B. The sleep cycle is typical of human beings.
C. The human sleep cycle has a duration of 90 minutes.
D. Deep sleep heals both the body and the brain.
33. Why do people have more REM before reaching adulthood
A. Because young people are warm-blooded creatures.
B. Because young people have more complex brains.
C. Because REM helps with brain restoration.
D. Because REM contributes to brain growth.
34. Which of the following can explain people’s little remembering of their dreams
A. People make dreams occasionally during sleep.
B. People's memory function weakens during sleep.
C. People's brain and body rest during lucid dreams.
D. People lose awareness totally during lucid dreams.
35. What’s the author’s main purpose in writing the text
A. To explain dreams and their meanings in different cultures.
B. To introduce facts about sleep cycles and dreams.
C. To stress the importance of sleep quality.
D. To give tips on how to sleep well.
