Outside, their parents worked in Arizona’s fields, harvesting the same crop.
The program was designed to show students that from the agricultural work their families originated from. The program was founded by Professor Marvin at Arizona State University. Marvin was approached by state education officials to create a STEM program for students from similar backgrounds—a group underrepresented in science. He accepted the challenge and developed a 4-week program bringing 50 to 80 high school students each year. They live on campus, take part in labs, and experience university life.
The moment managed charges were not measured by numbers. Many students arrived shy and unsure. As they worked in lab and saw people looked like them, they began asking questions and imagining futures as doctors and researchers. The program increased their interest in STEM and their future college admissions.
The professor saw himself in these students. He once was the student with a low GPA, waiting for someone to see that grades could not show. Watching them, he was reminded how powerful it can be when someone finally sees in you what you could not yet see in yourself.

In a major imaging study, French brain scientist Stanislas Dehaene and his team compared three groups of adults, those who learned to read as children, those who learned late, and those unable to read. Reading does not simply fill the mind. 39.____________ It strengthens links between the brain’s visual and language areas. It also improves hearing skills, and makes people more aware of speech sounds.

第二节 读后续写(25分)
Mrs. Evans, a retired librarian, had always found comfort in the quiet order of printed books. She had no desire to learn the new tech. Her life changed when her only daughter, Emma, moved to Australia for years ago. Video calls became their only bridge, yet Mrs. Evans’s ancient tablet, a gift from her child, was a source of constant discouragement—frozen screen, sudden silence, and blank messages. Across the street lived Leo, a high school student known for his tech skills and quiet behavior. He often saw Mrs. Evans struggling on her door, her face fixed with confusion as she tapped uselessly on the silent device. One rainy afternoon, her call with Emma cut off suddenly. In a moment of uncharacteristic boldness. Mrs. Evans walked across the street and held out the tablet like a wounded bird. “It’s my daughter… I can’t see her.”
Leo, who was more accustomed to fixing code than managing relationships with outsiders, hesitated. Within minutes, he checked the problem—an outdated operating system was to blame. As he sat by the window, he also found, but also a single, well-worn copy of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer with a bookmark stuck halfway.
“You’re reading that for school ” she asked, her librarian instincts(天分) kicking in.
“I’m sorry to bother you,” he said, “It’s not for school. I just… like the way we have to write what the teacher wants. It feels like a different kind of problem I can’t solve.”
Leo finished the update and handed back the tablet, but Mrs. Evans did not reach for it immediately.
