Here are some of the best examples of ongoing, large-scale and long-term projects to restore ecosystems worldwide.
The Northern Mozambique Channel
This small region is home to 35% of the coral reefs found in the entire Indian Ocean. However, it was threatened by agricultural pollution, overfishing, and climate change. Funded by the United Nations, Comoros, Mozambique, and Tanzania are working together to manage, protect, and restore almost 87,200 hectares of interconnected land and seascapes. And 4.85 million hectares are expected to be restored by 2030.
Great Green Wall
Launched by the African Union in 2007, this project seeks to transform the lives of millions in the Sahel region by creating a green wall that runs across 11 countries. The 2030 goals of the Great Green Wall are to restore 100 million hectares and create 10 million jobs across the continent, with a particular focus on Burkina Faso and Niger.
Shan-Shui Initiative
This ambitious initiative combines 75 projects to restore ecosystems across China. Launched in 2016, it aims to restore 10 million hectares of natural spaces, including forests, grasslands and waterways by 2030. Examples include the Oujiang River Headwaters Project in Zhejiang Province, which integrates scientific knowledge with traditional farming methods, like combining crops with fish- and duck-raising, to make land use more sustainable. About 3.5 million hectares have been restored so far.
Central American Dry Corridor
Exposed to heatwaves and unpredictable rainfall, the ecosystems and peoples of the Central American Dry Corridor are seriously affected by climate change, which has left 1.2 million people hungry in the region. Turning to traditional farming methods to increase the soil’s productivity is at the heart of this project which covers six countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua and Panama.
21. Who is providing funds for the project in the Indian Ocean
A. The United Nations. B. The African Union.
C. Mozambique. D. Comoros.

Since the first writing system was created over 5,000 years ago in ancient Mesopotamia, it has become a cornerstone of human civilization. Yet it was not until the 19th century when Louis Braille(1809 1852) devised a groundbreaking writing method of raised dots for blind people.
Braille was born in a village 22 miles east of Paris and became blind by the age of five. To aid him to read, his father, Simon René, put nails into the shape of letters on pieces of wood, and a churchman named Jacques Palluy offered to instruct Braille. By the age of seven, Braille attended the local school, where he was the only blind student. His teachers were deeply impressed by his intelligence and optimism. Three years later, he got a scholarship to continue his studies at the Royal Institute for Blind Youth in Paris, the world’s first such school.
Founded by pioneering educator Valentin Haüy, the institute required its students to learn a variety of academic subjects. Haüy had designed books with raised letters, which the children could read with their fingers, though with great difficulty.
The inspiration for Braille’s invention came in 1821 when Charles Barbier, a military officer, presented his “night writing” to the students. Barbier had devised the writing system for the French Army to transmit and carry out orders under the cover of darkness. The system used a series of raised dots to represent the sounds of French, so spelling was inaccurate and punctuation nonexistent.
Braille decided to improve the system and, at the age of 15, he succeeded in creating what would become known as braille. Its basis was the six dots arranged in two columns and three rows. Each combination of raised dots represented a letter. It was elegant in its simplicity and logic.
But the system was not universally accepted until 1878, when a global congress for deaf and blind people proposed an international braille standard, and it was officially adopted by English speakers in 1932.
24. What can be learned about Louis Braille from paragraphs 2 and 3
A. He was the only child in his family.
B. He was very sad about his blindness.
C. He received a relatively good education.
D. He was inspired by Palluy’s invention.
25. What do Barbier’s and Braille’s writing systems have in common
A. They use a series of raised dots.
B. They have punctuation.
C. They try to show the sounds.
D. They turn to raised letters.
26. When was braille invented
A. In 1809. B. In 1824. C. In 1878. D. In 1932.
27. What is the best title for the text
A. Who Played the Key Role in Creating Braille

The feeling of magic around festivals is something many of us remember from childhood, and spend the rest of our lives trying to recreate. However, most of us find it hard to capture the “festival feeling” as adults. Has the festival changed, or have our brains developed too much since childhood Or is it just nostalgia
Katie Carhart, a psychologist currently running a workshop on holiday stress and burnout, tells Newsweek that as adults, festivals feel different, because instead of just savoring the joy, we are making it.
“When we were children, holiday meals just arrived to the table and presents appeared under the tree or pillow. They seemed magical because we were not aware of any of the things happening behind the scenes,” Katie points out. “But as adults, we are suddenly responsible for making the magic and continuing the traditions—from cooking for hours, shopping and wrapping gifts until late at night, which comes with pressure, high expectations and stress.”
Katie explains that a lot of what people miss is nostalgia. We’re not always missing the festival itself as much as we’re missing how it felt when life was simpler, and we weren’t responsible for making it happen.
Therapist Krista Walker agrees nostalgia is a powerful emotional state, but things really have changed. “Christmas is different in some ways,” she says. “It’s become more commercialized, which can add stress. Brain development does play a role. As children, the holidays were more novel for us. As we get older, we’re no longer encountering things associated with festivals for the first time. It’s simply less novel.”
Krista encourages, however, that the festival feeling isn’t gone, it just tends to show up differently in adulthood. It’s more likely to come from small, intentional moments of connection and rest than from trying to recreate a childhood version of the holidays.
“Consider the things that meant the most to you over the holidays as a child, whether this was making Christmas cookies or watching a certain movie, and then slow down, and prioritize those things during the season. Don’t feel the need to make all six of your family’s traditional appetizers. Setting boundaries helps to reduce burnout and stress,” Krista says.
28. Which is closest in meaning to “savoring” in paragraph 2
A. Hiding. B. Enjoying. C. Missing. D. Remembering.
29. According to Katie Carhart, adults’ feeling about the festival has changed because ______.
A. the related traditions seem silly
B. it is too commercialized nowadays
C. it reminds them of sad memories
D. the celebrations become a real chore
30. What does Krista Walker think of Katie Carhart’s explanation
A. It is correct to a certain extent.
B. It misses the factor of brain.
C. It can not explain nostalgia well.
D. It has considered all factors.
31. What does Krista Walker suggest adults do
A. Stay away from the celebrations.
B. Follow other people’s example.
C. Just focus on something meaningful.
D. Recreate what they saw as kids.
D
The Germans were inventive. They came up with the printing machine and the car. Their country remains a big contributor to technological progress, filing more than 16,700 international patent applications in 2024. But, according to a new global survey published by the World Intellectual Property Office(WIPO), Germany is no longer among the ten most innovative countries in the world. China has displaced it.
WIPO uses 78 indicators to create its Global Innovation Index(指数). They cover inputs (such as spending on research and education) and outputs(such as patents and high-tech exports). The index also tries to capture a country’s ability to adopt technology, not just invent it.
China, of course, has a big population and a far bigger economy than Germany has. It would be no surprise if it outperformed Germany in term of absolute numbers. But the explanation for China’s success is not so simple. Many of WIPO’s indicators control for the size of a country’s economy and population. Spending on research and development, for example, is expressed not in absolute dollar terms but as a percentage of GDP. The number of researchers is calculated per million members of the population. The top country this year, as it was last year, is tiny Switzerland. Sweden comes second and America third.
China’s entry into the top ten is all the more remarkable as it is still a middle-income economy. Countries with a similar income per person would be expected to rank in the 50s or 60s. Other countries that have outperformed their income levels include India, South Korea, Vietnam and Britain. China also seems to be getting a satisfying return for its innovation investment. Its scores for outputs(patents, trademarks, exports and the like) are better than expected. The country, which was once described as a “fat tech dragon”, now seems to be in better shape.
In its report, WIPO notes private investment rose by 7.7% in 2024. But much of it was concentrated in America with a focus on one industry: artificial intelligence(AI). That is worrying. A healthy distribution should be broader and more balanced.
32. Which country has made remarkable progress in WIPO’s survey
A. Germany. B. Switzerland. C. America. D. China.
33. What message does the author want to convey in paragraph 3
A. WIPO’s indicators are scientific.
B. The Global Innovation Index is misleading.
C. WIPO’s conclusion is unreliable.
D. The input should be expressed in percentage.
34. Which of the following can best describe a “fat tech dragon”
A. Lovely. B. Inefficient. C. Powerful. D. Innovative.
35. What does the author say about the private investment in 2024
A. Its growth was slowing down.
B. Investment in AI is a waste.
C. Its distribution was unhealthy.
D. The US should get a big share.

第二节(满分25分)
Jake was changing his shoes when his phone buzzed. It was a message from Ryan: “Meet at the park in 5 minutes!” It had been a long week of school, and Jake couldn’t wait to play basketball with his friends. So he smiled and texted back: “See you there!” Just as he was heading out, his mom called from the kitchen,“Jake! Come back! I need you to tidy up the storage room. I have to do some shopping. ”
“But, Mom, I told Ryan we would meet at the park in 5 minutes. ” Jake protested.
“Grandma is moving in tomorrow! I wanted to give you a big surprise, so I did not tell you in advance. I’m sorry,” Mom said. “Today, we need to clean out the storage room to make space for her. ”
“Grandma ” Jake repeated.
The word felt almost foreign on his tongue. Jake didn’t even know Grandma that well. It had been years since she last visited, and now she was moving in. Jake couldn’t believe he had to give up his Saturday for someone he barely remembered.
Jake let out a long, dramatic sigh as he entered the storage room, which he found was a disaster: Forgotten junk littered every inch of the floor and spiderwebs hung from every corner. Dust floated in the sunlight like smoke when he stepped onto the floor. “This job is going to take forever!” he thought.
Just as he was about to send a text to Ryan, a dusty album at the shelf caught his eye. He pulled it down and opened it. On the very first page was a photo: a lady holding a tiny baby wrapped in a soft blanket. At the bottom of the photo, he saw some words in elegant handwriting: “Glad to meet you, Jake!”
“Is it me ” Jake wondered. “Who is the woman, then Is it Mom ”
开头句:
Just at the moment, Jake heard a knock on the door.
The next day, Ryan readily agreed to help Jake tidy up the room.
