When I wrote my first book three years ago, the words came naturally. Eight weeks of even rhythm (节奏) and it was finished with ease: So when I sat down to write my second book, I expected the same effortless flow. Instead, I found myself staring at a blank page, typing line that seemed to flash with quiet accusation. I couldn’t begin.
Day after day, I repeated the same routines: set up the perfect workspace, blocked out hours for writing, and reread old pages that had once made me proud. None of it helped. For a while, I blamed myself, mistaking my procrastination (拖延) for laziness or lack of discipline. Still, the familiar motions kept me occupied while the work itself remained still.
Eventually, exhaustion softened my stress, and I stopped pushing. What if the resistance was trying to tell me something I opened my journal and started writing- not about the book, but about why I couldn’t write it. The truth that poured out was simple and childlike: What if this book isn’t as good as the first What if readers decide a woman like me has already said everything she knows Beneath the delay, I found fear- not of the work, but of judgment. Procrastination had become a “safety net: staying still meant avoiding being seen and possibly found lacking.
So I tried something different. I set a timer for five minutes and wrote whatever came. A sentence half an idea, a small whisper of a scene. My hand moved first, and my mind followed. Piece by piece, those small beginnings grew into the book I had been afraid to start.
By the time I finished, I saw procrastination differently. It was never merely delay. It was a quiet dialogue between the part of me that wants to try and the part that fears the fall. What I once called wasted time was, in truth, the stillness before courage - the quiet reward of writing.
24. Why did the author keep following the same routines
A. To look for creative inspiration.
B. To overcome her procrastination.
C. To gain a false sense of progress.
D. To improve her writing technique.
25. What actually prevented the author from writing
A. Lack of new ideas.
B. Pursuit of perfection.
C. Desire for social fame.
D. Concern over disapproval.
26. How did the author manage to restart her writing
A. By taking one step at a time.
B. By focusing on small details.
C. By reflecting on the outcome.
D. By following a flexible schedule.
27. What message does the author seem to deliver in the last paragraph
A. Courage helps fight against fear.
B. Stillness can be part of creativity.
C. Procrastination is a waste of time.
D. Writers should avoid taking breaks.
C
Electric vehicles(EVs) are increasingly seen as a key to reducing urban air pollution and reliance on fossil fuels. Governments, such as the UK, have announced plans to ban new petrol and diesel car sales from 2030, signaling strong policy support for a cleaner transport future. Yet, the path to a fully electric society is far from straightforward, with several challenges yet to be overcome.
Two major practical difficulties stand in the way. First, EVs currently suffer from limited battery ranges compared to conventional vehicles, which can travel longer distances on a full tank of fuel. Second, charging infrastructure(设施) remains undeveloped, with charging points still insufficient in most regions. These factors contribute to “range anxiety” among potential buyers, slowing the shift to electric transport.
On the technological front, solid-state batteries are viewed as a promising breakthrough. Though currently used mainly in consumer electronics like smartphones, they are expected to enter the car market in the coming years, offering quicker charging times and an extended driving range. This could markedly enhance the appeal of EVs to the general public.
Economically, high initial costs continue to be a barrier. However, some countries have introduced policy supports, such as tax reductions, purchase rebates and dedicated traffic lanes for EVs, helping to boost adoption rates. Norway serves as a leading example, with the highest number of electric cars per person globally.
Nevertheless, experts like Colin Herron caution that EVs alone do not equal a zero-carbon future. Their environmental impact depends heavily on how the electricity used to charge them is generated: if the power comes mainly from fossil fuels, the overall emission reduction is limited. In addition, manufacturing EVs- especially their batteries- carries a substantial carbon footprint. Therefore,a truly sustainable transport system may require not only cleaner cars, but also greater use of public transport and a societal move toward fewer and shorter private vehicle trips.
28. What challenges do EVs mainly face
A. High costs and low popularity.
B. Tech delays and unstable power.
C. Limited battery life and safety issues.
D. Limited ranges and insufficient charging points.
29. How do some governments promote EV adoption
A. By raising taxes on petrol cars sharply.
B. By offering tax cuts, subsidies and special lanes.
C. By increasing the number of city parking spaces.
D. By enhancing the quality of public transport services.
30. What does Colin Herron’s warning imply
A. EV benefits rely on clean electricity source.
B. EVs cannot become truly green in the future.
C. Deadlines for banning fuel cars are not practical.
D. Battery technology is the key to green transport.
31. What is the main purpose of the text
A. To introduce the latest EV models to readers.
B. To call for investment in charging facilities.
C. To discuss both the future and problems of EVs.
D. To blame car makers for high production costs.
D
When danger approaches, animals seem to follow the ancient proverb:"the enemy of my enemy is my friend." Researchers have found subtle ways that animals communicate with other species in cooperative defense.
A study in Nature Ecology & Evolution reported that over 20 bird species across four continents make nearly identical high-pitched(高调的) “whining” calls to warn others of birds like cuckoos. Cuckoos are brood parasites: they lay eggs in other birds’ nests, often pushing out the host own eggs, to trick host birds into raising their chicks. According to co-lead author James Kennerley, these “whining calls work as the word” cuckoo” and appears to be understood across species, offering clues how language may have originated.
Birds producing this alarm call often live in regions with high numbers of brood parasites that target multiple host species. Hearing the call, potential hosts react aggressively to drive the invader away.
To investigate further, Will Feeney’s team played recordings of such alarm calls--originally from birds on other continents- to potential host birds in Australia and China. They found that the hosts responded just as quickly to foreign alarm calls as to their own, which indicates that sound helps many bird species may respond to certain alarm sounds, those in parasite-rich areas have adapted to carry clear threat information. Feeney suggests that while communication between species, not only within one species.
Back in 1871, Charles Darwin suggested that spoken language might have evolved from the imitation and modification of instinctive(本能的) sounds- for example, a scream in response to pain. Feeney notes,Birds changing their built-in calls for a new use could be an early stage toward language, something once thought uniquely human.
32. How can animals of different species cooperate in defense
A. By communicating freely.
B. By predicting danger in advance.
C. By following the old routine.
D. By making the same sound as signal.
33. Why do birds make"whing" calls to warn others of cuckoos
A. Because cuckoos are good at playing tricks.
B. Because cuckoos steal eggs from hosts' nests.
C. Because cuckoos have a wide range of species.
D. Because cuckoos make hosts care for their young.
34. What does paragraph 4 mainly talk about
A. Birds universally recognize alarm calls.
B. Birds ignore easily recordings of alarm calls.
C. Birds' alarm calls function within species.
D. Brood parasites target certain host species.
35. Why does the author mention Darwin in paragraph 5
A. To show language is still evolving.
B. To prove human language is unique.
C. To link bird calls with language origin.
D. To question the reliability of the study.

第二节(读后续写25分)
It was the Friday before the school's English Dram Festival, and our class had been preparing for a month. I was the director of our short play, The Last Leaf. Everyone had their roles, and rehearsal went smoothly- except for one person: Tom.
Tom was a shy boy who seldom spoke in class. He played a small role passerby with only one line:"What a beautiful leaf!" But every time he said it, his voice was so low that no one could hear. I tried to encourage him, but he only nodded and remained the same.
"If you can't say it loudly, we'll have to find someone else," I finally said in front of the whole group. Tom's face turned red. He lowered his head and whispered"sorry." Then he walked away quickly. I thought he just needed to practice more.
The next Monday, Tom didn't show up at rehearsal "he asked for leave," the monitor told me. I didn't think much of it.
But on Tuesday, I saw Tom sitting alone on the playground after school. He was holding a piece of paper and practicing something quietly. I hid behind a tree and listened."What a beautiful leaf!" he said - this time loud and clear. He repeated it over and over, each time with more confidence. Then he put the paper into his pocket and looked up at the sky, smiling.
I felt a sharp pain in my chest. Suddenly, I realized what I had done. I had embarrassed him in public. I had doubted him without knowing his efforts. I wanted to go over and say something, but had already stood up and left.
The next morning, I decided to find him before class.
Paragraph 1: I saw Tom at his desk, quietly reading an English book.
Paragraph 2: At the drama festival, when Tom stepped onto the stage, I held my breath.

第二节读后续写范文
Paragraph 1: I saw Tom at his desk, quietly reading an English book. I walked up to him sincerely and apologized for my rude words the other day, saying I shouldn’t have pressured him publicly. Tom looked up with a faint smile and told me he had kept practicing his line every spare minute to prove himself. Deeply moved, I praised his perseverance and promised to keep his role. His eyes lit up with joy.
Paragraph 2: At the drama festival, when Tom stepped onto the stage, I held my breath. As expected, he delivered his line loud and clear, perfectly catching every audience’s attention. The whole play turned out a big success. After the performance, Tom came to thank me, from which I learned never to judge others hastily before seeing their efforts.
