The Luban Lock, also known as the Kongming Lock, is a traditional Chinese toy. It shows the skills of ancient Chinese people. The lock gets its name from Lu Ban, a great woodworker who lived in ancient China. It challenges people to take apart its wooden pieces and then put them back together. Most surprisingly, its design uses mortise and tenon joints (榫卯结构)—an old Chinese way to connect wood without nails (钉子).
A classic Luban Lock usually has six wooden rods (棒) that lock together. As time passed, people made modern locks with 12, 18, or even 24 rods. In the past, the lock was made of hard woods like rosewood and pearwood. These woods are strong and look nice. Now the modern ones look more special with some traditional Chinese designs on the surface, like lucky clouds — a symbol of good luck.
The Luban Lock is more than just a toy. It shows the smart ideas of ancient Chinese people. It also shows spirits like working together and living in peace, because all its parts must fit well to make a complete shape.
Today, the Luban Lock is a helpful learning tool. It makes people think carefully and solve problems. It also helps build patience and creativity. Many schools now use the Luban Lock in classes. It teaches students about traditional Chinese woodworking and engineering. By playing with the Luban Lock, students can learn more about China’s culture and better understand the skills of ancient Chinese people.
19.Which is right about the Luban Lock
A. It gets its name from a farmer. B. It is a Chinese farm tool.

D. Because they were easy to find everywhere.
21.How can the Luban Lock help people today
A. It helps people learn how to use nails and joints.
B. It teaches people more about modern China’s culture.

22.What’s the main purpose of this text

D. To explain why Lu Ban was a great woodworker.

When I was six years old, I saw a picture showing a snake eating a big animal. The animal was so large that the snake wasn’t able to move.
Thinking of that snake, I drew my first picture. I showed it to adults and asked if it scared them. But they answered, “How can I be scared of a hat ”
My picture was not a hat. It was a snake that had eaten an elephant. So I drew the inside of the snake to help them understand. However, they advised me to stop drawing and focus on geography, history, maths and grammar. That was why I gave up my amazing dream as a painter at six. Adults are always so boring and never understand children.
Later, I learnt to fly planes and travelled all over the world. Geography was really useful and helped me tell different places clearly. In all my travels, I met many people and looked closely at them, but it did not improve my opinion of them. Whenever I met someone normal, I showed them my first picture to test if they could understand it. But they still said it was a hat. Then I talked about bridges, golf and politics (政治) instead, and the adult was glad to know that I was such a smart man.
So I lived alone with no one to really talk to, until I had an accident in the Sahara Desert six years ago. My car broke down and I only had enough water for a week. I was much lonelier than a sailor on a boat in the ocean. So you can imagine my surprise when a funny little voice woke me up in the next morning.
23.Why didn’t the adults feel scared when they saw the writer’s picture
A. Because they thought it was just a hat.
B. Because they were not afraid of snakes.
C. Because they had seen this picture before.
D. Because they preferred geography to drawing.
24.Which picture shows the meaning of the underlined word “sailor” in Paragraph 5
A. B. C. D.
25.What may the writer think of the adults in the text
A. Interesting. B. Weak. C. Understanding. D. Serious.
26.What might happen in the next part of the story
A. The writer lived in the Sahara Desert alone.
B. The writer met a person who understood him.
C. The writer decided to live with a sailor on a boat.
D. The writer got a new friend and talked about politics.

Every year on March 14, scientists, math lovers and schools around the world celebrate Pi Day. The tradition was started by scientist Larry Shaw in 1988 at a science museum in San Francisco. In 2009, the US government made it a national day. The date was chosen because the first three numbers of pi are 3, 1, 4.
Find out about pi
Pi is a special number. It describes the relationship between a circle’s circumference (周长) and its diameter (直径). No matter how big or small a circle is, this ratio (比例) always stays the same. Pi is a never-ending number. NASA engineers even use its first 16 numbers to explore the mystery of space.
Have fun with pi
The best part of Pi Day is the fun activities you can try in everyday life. One simple activity uses everyday objects like plates, cups or coins. You write down each object’s circumference and diameter, and then find out the ratio of the two numbers to see how close your result is to 3.14. There are also fun games. For example, you can challenge yourself to remember as many numbers of pi as possible. Of course, no Pi Day is complete without a big meal of round foods, from pizza and pancakes to burgers. Another fun way to celebrate Pi Day is to bake a pie to share with family and friends.
Use pi knowledge
Pi is not just for math problems. Bridge builders use it to design safe bridges and underground roads. Scientists use pi to draw maps of other planets. They also use it to make sure the wheels of space robots work well. Pi Day turns difficult math into real-world fun, showing how numbers connect to life in surprising ways.
27.Why was March 14 chosen as Pi Day
A. NASA uses this date to explore space.
B. Larry Shaw invented pi on this day.
C. The first three numbers of pi are 3, 1, 4.
D. It is the birthday of a famous scientist.
28.How does the writer show the fun on Pi Day
A. By sharing some scientists’ stories.
B. By answering questions about Pi Day.
C. By comparing common days with Pi Day.
D. By giving examples of different fun activities.
29.What can you know from the text
A. NASA uses the last 16 numbers of pi in space work.
B. People use pi in both fun activities and serious work.
C. Pi Day has been a national day in the US for 40 years.
D. Round foods taste better on Pi Day than on other days.
30.What’s the best title for this text
A. Pi Day: A Special Day for Fast Food
B. Pi Day: A National Holiday for Scientists
C. Pi Day: A Math Lesson for Space Engineers
D. Pi Day: A Celebration of the Magic Number
