A 23-year-old man can do weightlifting in many ways as any other gym-goer, but he only has one leg. Nathan Seawood doesn’t let his disability keep him from the weight room. Instead, he’s learning to bear a different load.
“This isn’t just a physical battle in the gym,” Seawood said. “It’s a mental battle for myself.” Refusing to be weighed down by his disability, Seawood draws strength from his mind, as fights to make it through each step. “That takes a lot out of me. I push my body so hard that I’m tired,” said Seawood, who once thought he might have to give up the weights forever.
Seawood ended up in a hospital bed with one leg left after falling off a boat in Long Lake near Traverse City in June 2019. His left leg got caught in the propeller (螺旋桨) and had to be cut.
“I didn’t want people to see me,” Seawood said. “I couldn’t accept what had happened to me because it’s a lifestyle change. And that was hard. I was down alone.”
Seawood said a therapist helped lift his spirits. “I wanted to be able to walk and that was difficult because my remaining leg was really wasted muscle,” Seawood said. Now he’s using those muscles to train hard at Grand Rapids City Gym, inspiring those around to keep pushing.
“He faces difficulties most of us don’t have to,” Jeff Phillips, who owns the gym, said. “I mean, he’s in here and he only has one leg, but he’s doing a lot of the same lifts everybody with two legs are doing. It’s surely encouraging to see him doing that.”
Despite his best attempt to kick back down, Seawood is still standing, and while he may experience different types of struggles, he’s thankful to still be moving. “I might have a disability, but I’m not disabled,” Seawood said.
24. What plays the key role in Seawood’s weightlifting
A. His family.
B. His strong will.
C. His right leg.
D. The others’ encouragement.
25. What led to Seawood’s disability
A. A car accident.
B. An early birth.
C. A serious disease.
D. A medical mistake.
26. Which words can best describe Seawood
A. Confident and honest.
B. Smart and hard-working.
C. Calm and modest.
D. Determined and positive.
27. Why is Jeff Phillips mentioned in paragraph 6
A. To tell Seawood’s sad story.
B. To draw attention to weightlifting.
C. To speak highly of Seawood.
D. To show sympathy for Seawood.

Buying books on the Internet is a great way to save time and money. Online bookstores offer new books and used books that can save you lots of money. They are far better compared to traditional bookstores as they offer much more kinds of books. Another advantage of shopping online is that you can read book reviews as well as readers' reviews to get an idea whether the book is worth buying. Online bookstores offer great discounts to regular customers, which is a big attraction for book lovers.

Most of the popular online bookstores offer useful tools. One tool is a wish list on the website. You can change the list of books you wish to buy in the future. The bookstore will know what you want and will email you at once when the book of your choice is available.

No one can say whether human-like robots will have a sweet dream, but they will almost certainly need periods of rest that offer benefits like sleep provides to living brains, according to a new research from Los Alamos National Laboratory(LANL).
“We study spiking neural networks(脉冲神经网络), which are systems that learn much as living brains do,” said Yijing Watkins, a computer scientist from LANL. “We trained a neuromorphic(神经形态的) processor in a way humans and other biological systems learn from their environment during childhood development.” Watkins and her research team found that the network simulations(模拟) became unstable after continuous periods of unattended learning. When they exposed the systems to static that was analogous to resting, the artificial experience during sleep, stability was recovered. “It was as though we’re giving the neural networks a good night’s rest,” said Watkins.
The discovery came as the research team worked to develop neural networks that are as close as humans and other biological systems learn to see. The group initially struggled with stabilizing simulated neural networks undergoing unsupervised dictionary training, which involves classifying objects without providing examples to computer them to stabilize them. They experimented with various types of noise. The best results came when they used waves of so-called Gaussian noise. These waves can make sure that the neural networks keep stable.
The group’s next goal is to apply their algorithm(算法) to Intel’s Loihi, a product which uses spiking neural networks to work. They hope allowing Loihi to sleep from time to time will enable it to steadily process information in real time. If it can confirm the need for sleep in intelligent machines, we can probably expect to see a number of human-like robots and other intelligent machines that may enjoy a snooze in the future.
32. What do Watkins and her research team find
A. Neural networks are stable.
B. Artificial brains may need rest as well.
C. Neural networks are very sensitive to noise.
D. Human-like robots need equal rest to humans.
33. What does the underlined word “analogous” in paragraph 2 mean
A. Similar.
B. Beneficial.
C. Contrary.
D. Related.
34. Why will the researchers apply the algorithm to Loihi
A. To better update Loihi.
B. To enable Loihi to run faster.
C. To further confirm their discovery.
D. To make sure Loihi gets enough sleep.
35. In which section can we probably find this text
A. Joy & Education.
B. Business & Industry.
C. Medicine & Care.
D. Computer & Science.

The second day of school came and Meg was eager to get out of bed. She had a feeling that it was going to be a good day. Meg put on her uniform(校服), ate breakfast and headed out the door. She skipped(蹦蹦跳跳地走) to school, then when she got close to the gate, she was going at attention. She wouldn’t want the students there to think that she skipped like a child.
The first bell rang and everyone ran to class. Mrs Hillary handed out the test papers and gave everyone an hour to finish it. Meg smiled, quickly answering each question, and finished ahead of everyone else. She couldn’t wait to go home. The hour ended and Mrs Hillary announced that she would collect the test the next day evening. Most of them felt great, because they didn’t finish their papers.
When Meg was going to bed that evening, she looked for her test paper. She wanted to make sure it was inside her bag so the next day she wouldn’t need to rush. Frightened, she couldn’t find her test paper. She searched under her table, on her table, in the living room, under her bed, but still, no sign of her test paper. Her hopes were gone now. Even after an entire night’s sleep, Meg thought everything was lost. Meg wandered a think of an excuse, fast.
“Maybe,” Meg thought with a frown, “I could say that a UFO came to visit my mom and it blew everything onto our two foot-high fence. Or, my mom accidentally threw it in the bin, that’s too classic plan. No, I don’t have a dog. Yeah, that’s good.”
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
The next day was Wednesday, and Meg decided to go and see Mrs Hillary early.
Mrs Hillary didn’t blame Meg, just telling her to be careful next time.

读后续写
The next day was Wednesday, and Meg decided to go and see Mrs Hillary early. She plucked up her courage and went to the office, telling the teacher the truth about losing her exam paper instead of making up strange lies. She felt ashamed of her carelessness and made a sincere apology.
Mrs Hillary didn’t blame Meg, just telling her to be careful next time. She permitted Meg to redo the test after school. Concentrating fully, Meg finished the paper perfectly. This experience taught her a valuable lesson to keep her school items well-organized from then on.
