Requirements: Open to artists worldwide.
This digital art competition is organized by Lumen Art Projects Ltd, a non-profit organization that’s dedicated to providing new opportunities for digital artists around the world. The contest guidelines are relatively loose—the only requirement is that the submitted artworks must somehow engage with technology.
Animago Award
Prize: ?3,000 cash prize for Best Young Production.
Entry Fee: Free.
Requirements: Open to artists worldwide.

Elizabeth S. Scordato earned an undergraduate degree in biology from North Carolina’s Duke University in 2004. After graduation she continued to work with one of her professors in the biology department, Christine M. Drea. Their project investigated the smell-marking behavior of the ring-tailed lemur (狐猴). Her first academic paper, coauthored with Drea, was published in 2007 in the journal Animal Behaviour.
In 2012, Scordato began working on a postdoctoral project at the University of Colorado at Boulder with Rebecca Safran. The team swallows, a common species of bird that is at the early stages of speciation. Barn swallows show wide variation across their geographical ranges. By analyzing the genetics of thousands of barn swallows, Scordato and her team showed that differences in feather color and migratory behavior keep different populations from breeding (繁殖) with one another. This is another key step toward the formation of new species.
In 2018, Scordato joined the staff of California State Polytechnic University in Pomona, California. Her first major project involves the Pacific swallow. Like the barn swallow, the Pacific swallow has shown a remarkable ability to adapt to changes in its environment. In particular, Pacific swallows build their nests on man-made structures, which has enabled them to survive around human settlements. Scordato is now studying how the spread of human settlements and structures throughout Southeast Asia and Oceania has shaped the genetic evolution (进化) of Pacific swallows.
Travelling around the world to study birds is an adventure, but it is also hard work. “Once I was leaving for a challenging field season in India, my mother asked me ‘Why can’t you do anything the easy way ’” Scordato wrote. “I told her the meaning for doing something the hard way is worth the struggle: you get the excitement of learning something new about the natural world that no one has understood before, and you also know that you really earned that discovery.”

Drones(无人机) already fly and spy. Now, they can build too. A pair of drones working together made a tower taller than a person. Engineers demonstrated this new method of 3D printing in the lab. Miko Kovac, who co-led the research, says that animal builders, bees, inspired him. They shared their success in Nature on September 22.
To print that person-sized tower, a Build-Drone carried expanding foam (泡沫). This material rapidly expands and hardens when sprayed (喷洒). The drone flew in a slow circle, spraying the foam downwards to form layers. When it ran out of material, it flew away so a person could reload it with more foam or replace the drone’s batteries. This type of foam tends to thicken unevenly. So, while a Build-Drone was being reloaded, a second drone surveyed the work. It was called Scan-Drone. It looked for places where the last layer was too thin or thick. Then it created a plan for the next layer to help even things out. This kept the tower straight and strong.
“This was an impressive demonstration,” says Andrea Tagliabue, who wasn’t involved in the research. As a graduate student in robotics at MIT, Tagliabue works on control systems for drones. However, he notes that the researchers still have challenges left to solve before 3D printing drones are useful in the real world. “Since these drones built structures inside a lab, they didn’t have to contend with wind or other outdoor disturbances. Also, cameras placed around the room could help track the drones’ positions and send them along the correct paths. Outdoors, the drones would have to navigate without this extra help,” says Tagliabue.
Kovac is already planning to do tests outdoors. He also plans to build more complex structures. He believes that drones can work together like bees in the future, and they will construct buildings or make repairs in places that are tough for human crews and heavy machinery to reach. “That may include disaster areas, the tops of tall buildings or even other planets,” Kovac says. “There’s a lot of interest in building on Mars with robots.”

Eating a traditional Mediterranean-type diet—rich in foods such as seafood, fruit, and nuts—may help reduce the risk of dementia(痴呆) by almost a quarter, a new study has revealed. 23% lower risk for dementia than those who did not. This research, published today in the journal BMC Medicine, is one of the biggest studies of its kind.
Experts at Newcastle University found that individuals who ate a Mediterranean-like diet had up to across the UK, who had completed a dietary assessment. The authors scored individuals based on how closely their diet matched the key features of a Mediterranean one. The participants were allowed for almost a decade, during which time there were 882 cases of dementia.
The authors considered each individual’s genetic risk for dementia by estimating what is known as their polygenic(多基因的)risk—a measure of all the different genes that are related to the risk of dementia. They found that there were similar associations between sticking to Mediterranean diet and dementia risk in individuals with higher and lower genetic risk for this condition, which may indicate that even for those with a higher genetic risk, having a better diet could reduce the likelihood of developing the condition.
Dr Janice Ranson, joint lead author on the paper, said: “Dementia impacts the lives of millions of individuals throughout the world, and there are currently no options for treating this condition. Our study shows a Mediterranean diet that has a high intake of healthy plant-based foods may be important for future strategies to reduce dementia risk. For example, the dementia prevention efforts could go beyond general healthy diet advice and focus on choosing specific foods and nutrients.”
The authors caution that their analysis is limited to individuals who self-reported their ethnic background as white, British or Irish, as genetic data was only available based on European countries, and that further research is needed in a range of populations to determine the potential benefit.
