Do you like playing little jokes (玩笑) on your friends and family A new study found we’re not the only ones like doing this. Big apes (猿) have great fun doing this too. A group of scientists (科学家) spent a lot of time studying the apes from San Diego Zoo in the US and Leipzig Zoo in Germany. They were surprised to find out apes love to monkey around in many ways.
Some apes would give their friend something only to take it back quickly, or even tickle (挠痒痒) each other happily. They liked to catch their friends’ hair and some even walked into their friends and fell over for fun. Often, if one ape didn’t play back, the other ape would keep doing the same funny things again and again. The young apes, around three to five years old, enjoyed doing this the most, just like little kids do. Dr. Isabelle Laumer, one scientist in this group, told the newspaper, “When little kids play jokes on their mother, they like to watch how she feels carefully. We see that in these great apes, too.” What’s more, the study found that these young apes make special sounds when playing jokes, different from the sounds they often make. It’s their way to show their happiness for monkeying around.
Next, scientists need to spend more time finding out why the apes love playing jokes on each other. They think knowing this can help us learn more about how apes and people show their feelings.

It was a clear sunny day. Mary skipped all the way to the secret garden wall. At this moment, the robin flew towards Mary and landed at her feet. Mary was pleased to see him, then she stopped skipping and spoke to him.
“Thanks to your help yesterday, I know where the key was,” she laughed. “Can you show me where the door is today ”
The robin sat on an old climbing plant on the wall and began to sing. Suddenly the wind made the plant move. The thick, heavy plant was covering a door. Mary’s heart was beating fast and her hands were shaking as she pushed the leaves away. That was the door she had found for all the time! Mary nervously opened the door.
Once she got into it, she was amazed by the beautiful scenery. It was the loveliest and nicest place she had ever seen. There were old roses everywhere, and the walls were covered with climbing roses. “Are the roses still alive ” she wondered. “I hope they aren’t all dead.” This garden seemed very strange and quiet but she did not feel lonely at all as she stayed in a world of her own.
Suddenly, she noticed some small green shoots coming up through the grass. Something was growing in the garden! When she found a lot more shoots, she made up her mind that they needed more air and light, so she began to pull out the thick grass around them. However, she worked very slowly because she only worked with her own hands.
“If I can have some useful tools at my hand, I can surely start to make my own special garden,” she thought, “Now there isn’t much for me to do.” Thinking about this, Mary left the secret garden.

We usually think fish can’t talk. But there are a lot of sounds under the ocean. In fact, scientists believe that all sea animals—at least 250,000 kinds—can “speak”. If we listen carefully when we are underwater, “we can hear animals all around us,” UK scientist Steve Simpson told the BBC.
In the past years, scientists used sound recorders (录音机) to hear fish’s “voices”. There are now thousands of recorders in the ocean. They help scientists match sounds with sea life.
A healthy coral reef (珊瑚礁) is one of the noisiest places in the ocean. Scientists can tell if it’s healthy by listening to it. A healthy coral reef should be full of clicks (咔嚓声) made by shrimps (小虾). When some coral reefs died in 2015 and 2016, they became quiet. After people set up the protected areas, scientists heard the animals come back.
By listening to the ocean, scientists start to understand sea animals’ languages. Strong clownfish make short “chirp” sounds when going after small clownfish. They do this to show they are more powerful (有力量的). A damselfish can create a pop sound to scare other fish by quickly opening and closing its mouth. Mother dolphins can use a special voice to talk to their babies. They are saying “I’m here” to comfort the baby dolphins.
Scientists are building an online library called the Global Library of Underwater Biological Sounds (全球水下生物声音库). It will collect sounds from all over the world to check sea animals’ health. Humans need to understand the sounds made by underwater animals before they die out.

A. A record of animals’ sounds.
