After celebrating his 40th birthday on Nov 5, renowned Kenyan marathon runner Eliud Kipchoge started his fifth trip to China.
Kipchoge was raised on a farm. As a child, he would often ride his bicycle to sell milk and run to and from school each day. In 2002, he began focusing on running, initially specializing in the 5,000 meters, a discipline he pursued for 11 years. In 2013, Kipchoge transitioned to marathon running, starting another 11-year journey that would redefine the sport.
From his first marathon in 2013 to breaking the world record twice and winning two Olympic gold medals, Kipchoge has not only achieved extraordinary personal milestones but also inspired a global community of runners.
Looking back on his career, Kipchoge attributes his journey to a deep love for running and a desire to showcase his talent on the world stage. For years, he has stuck to a strict daily routine. His day begins at 5 am when he rises for a morning run. Afterwards, he returns home for a tea break, followed by some light exercises before lunch. In the afternoon, he heads out for another run, then spends the rest of the day focusing on recovery and relaxation before preparing for bed.
Besides his passion for the sport, Kipchoge’s remarkable career comes from his inner drive to push the limits of human endurance. In 2019, he became the first athlete to run a marathon in under two hours, proving his motto(座右铭) that “no human is limited”.
“It is not just about running to win or breaking records. It’s about the satisfaction you feel after finishing a marathon-knowing that you can run anything, that you can accomplish anything in this world,” Kipchoge told China Daily.

Cities can boost happiness just as much as the countryside—as long as they are scenic according to experts.
Naturally open spaces are typically considered to create a better mood. But in the first study of its kind, scientists found areas with lots of old buildings but not much green space can be just as good for our well-being. And the effect could be the same regardless of the weather, how wealthy the area is, the activities that take place there and the day of the week.
The research leader said, “We find that people are indeed happier in more scenic environments. Built-up areas, which might consist of characterful buildings or bridges, also have a positive link to happiness.”
The researchers made a survey among more than 15,000 users of the app Happiness. People are asked to report on their happiness multiple times per day while recording their current location, who they are with and what they are currently doing.
To determine whether individuals are happier in more scenic environments, the team considered a range of factors that may also play a part. For example, travelling to or from gardening and walking are positively associated with happiness, while leisure activities such as resting, weekdays or weekends.
Although natural elements such as ponds, rivers and forest paths improved ratings on a photograph, so did churches, cottages and towers.
A study surveyed 400,000 people across Canada using a widely-recognized happiness scale. They found that city dwellers(居民) have higher salaries, higher education levels and lower unemployment rates. However, that meant nothing in terms of joy; people who lived in the countryside were, on average, eight times happier than people in urban areas.
28. Which of the following is the key factor that leads to one’s happiness
A. Beautiful places.
B. Tall buildings.
C. Fine weather.
D. Rich places.
29. What can we know from the passage
A. City dwellers are much happier than those living in the countryside.
B. One is happy when he lives in an area with lots of buildings.
C. One is happier to do the gardening than to travel to work.
D. People are unhappier to rest at home than to make money.
30. Which is mentioned as what makes a photo look better
A. Railway tracks, ponds and rivers.
B. Forest paths, cottages and towers.
C. Flying planes, forests and crops.
D. City buildings, subways and ships.
31. Where can you most likely read this passage
A. In a photography book.
B. In a guidebook.
C. In a technology report.
D. In a health magazine.

Lao Zi once said, “Care about what other people think and you will always be their prisoner.”
People tend to gain self-worth through others’ approval(认可), which is a fruitless way to go through life. Why do we allow what others think of us to have so much power over how we feel about ourselves If it’s true that you can’t satisfy all the people all the time, wouldn’t it make sense to stop trying
Unfortunately, sense often isn’t driving our behavior. For social beings who desire love and belonging, wanting to be liked and caring about the effect we have on others are healthy and allow us to make connections. However, where we get into trouble is when our self-worth is dependent upon whether we win someone’s approval or not.
This need to be liked comes from when we were children and were completely dependent on others to take care of us. Small children are not just learning how to walk and communicate, they are also trying to learn how the world works. We learn about who we are based on communications with others. Thus, to a four-year-old, if Mommy or Daddy doesn’t like him or her, there is the danger that they will abandon them. We need to understand that when we anxiously want someone to approve of us, it’s being driven by that little kid part of us that is still terrified of abandonment.
As you become more capable of providing yourself with the approval you find, your need for validation (确认) by others will start to disappear, leaving you stronger, more confident, and yes, happier in your life. Imagine how much time we lose each moment we restrain our real selves in an effort to be liked.
So embrace the cliché(老话) and love your true self as it’s highly doubtful that you’ll regret it.
32. Why is Lao Zi’s quotation used in paragraph 1
A. To lead into the topic of this passage.
B. To stress the importance of caring about others.
C. To show us how to avoid being a prisoner.
D. To introduce a famous historical figure.
33. What does the author say about why people expect others’ approval
A. They want to feel better than others.
B. They are trying not to be abandoned.
C. They believe it will bring them sense of pride.
D. They consider that approval equals success.
34. What does the word “restrain” most likely mean in the passage
A. Express. B. Hide. C. Confirm. D. Reflect.
35. Which one is the most suitable title of this passage
A. The Power of Self-Worth.
B. Childhood Shapes Behavior.
C. The Importance of Approval-Seeking.
D. Staying True to Yourself.

Aunt Evie had a dollhouse. It had many toys there. Every Friday afternoon, I went to Aunt Evie’s house with my parents. The adults would sit around a table in the dining room, eating pie and talking, while I played in the dollhouse for hours.
Sometimes I would pick up these lovely toys and place them in different positions. It was really fun. One time I asked Aunt Evie where she got the toys so that I could buy some, too. To my disappointment, Aunt Evie said that most of them were specially handmade gifts from her friends and couldn’t be bought anywhere. One such toy was a little bear, which was my favourite. It was so beautiful that I wanted to own it badly. “If I take it, Aunt Evie may not notice it.” I said to myself.
Therefore, on a Friday afternoon. I attempted to take the little bear away from Aunt Evie’s dollhouse. I had to wait until nobody was watching me, ‘and it took me hours to get the courage to put the little bear in my pocket. Once I got the little bear, I couldn’t wait to go home. I had to hide it somewhere at home, so that no one would know I took it. That night after I went home with my parents, I couldn’t go to sleep. “What a bad person I am! I stole something from my loved Aunt Evie.” I thought. When I woke up the next morning, I felt awful, but I couldn’t tell my parents. I let alone return the little bear to Aunt Evie. I was embarrassed about my behaviour. At some point, I started to hate the little bear and myself. And I knew if I didn’t do something. I wouldn’t get away from those bad feelings.

第二节 读后续写范文(25分)
My hand was shaking when I rang the doorbell of Aunt Evie’s house. Seeing Aunt Evie open the door, I took the little bear out of my pocket nervously and apologized sincerely for stealing it. Much to my surprise, Aunt Evie smiled gently and said she had noticed the missing toy but never blamed me. She told me honesty was more valuable than the toy and gifted the bear to me as a reward for my courage to correct mistakes.
So I decided to tell my mom what I had done. After hearing my story, Mom praised me for being honest and reminded me never to take others’ things without permission. From this experience, I learned that honesty is the best choice whenever we make mistakes.
