Andréa Speranza wanted to be a firefighter long before she had the right word for her wish. After one childhood adventure at a construction site ended with an iron nail stuck in her leg and an emergency call to the fire department, she found herself in awe. “As they gave me the medical treatment, I thought they could help everybody,” says the now 52-year-old.
In 2000, Andréa Speranza achieved her dream of becoming a firefighter, joining the Halifax Regional Fire Service. Her job was exactly as satisfying as she imagined it would be, except for one thing: she still hadn’t seen another woman in her role — not in magazines, on television, or in real life. Speranza decided that she wanted to change the situation by helping young women to see that they, too, could have a career like hers.
The result was Camp Courage, a program for girls aged 15 to 19 who want to learn more about firefighting. In 2006, Speranza and about 20 volunteers welcomed their first 17 participants, attracting attendees through advertising in schools. A new study shows that large language models fed a diet of popular but low-quality social media content experience a kind of “brain rot”, such as reduced reasoning abilities and degraded memory — symptoms familiar to anyone spending too much time staring at screens and looking through meaningless information on social media.
“We live in an age when much information is engineered to capture clicks, not convey truth or depth,” says Junyuan Hong, a professor at the National University of Singapore who worked on the study. “We wondered: What will happen when AI models are trained with the same stuff ”
Hong and his colleagues fed different kinds of text to two open source large language models in pretraining. They examined what happened when the models were fed a mix of highly “engaging,” or widely shared, social media posts and ones that contained striking or hyped (炒作的) text like “wow,” or “today only.” Then they used several different standards to evaluate the impact of this “junk” social media diet on two open source models: Meta’s Llama and Alibaba’s Qwen.
The models fed junk text experienced a kind of AI brain rot. The results are important for the AI industry, Hong says, because model-builders might assume that social media posts are a good source of training data for their models. These findings mirror research on human subjects, which shows that low-quality online content has a harmful effect on people’s cognitive abilities. The wide spread of the phenomenon witnessed “brain rot” named as the Oxford Dictionary word of the year 2024.
The researchers also found that models damaged by low-quality content could not easily be improved through retraining. “As more AI-generated junk spreads across social media, it influences the very data future models will learn from,” Hong says. “Our findings show that once this kind of ‘brain rot’ sets in, subsequent clean training cannot completely remove its bad influence.”

Octopuses (章鱼) can rapidly alter the look and surface of their skin, which is a capability scientists have long tried to copy in man-made materials. These animals use such changes to integrate into their surroundings or communicate with one another. Sun noted that the creature inspired them to develop a soft synthetic material with similar features through halftone-encoded 4D printing technology.
To realize this idea, the team transformed image information and data collected from octopuses into digital codes. By putting the digital instructions into the hydrogel (水凝胶) film, researchers could control how the encoded material changed its shape in response to different conditions. This 4D printing technology finally led to the birth of a programmable smart skin with various functions.
One eye-catching feature of the material is its ability to hide and reveal visual information. To demonstrate this, the team put an image of the Mona Lisa into the film. It showed no visible image at first. But when the film was placed into ice water or gradually heated, the hidden image became clear. Besides visual switching, the smart skin also boasts impressive shape-changing performance. The team made flat films with the Mona Lisa image that could later turn into three-dimensional forms. As the films curved, the hidden image slowly appeared, showing that changes in shape and visual appearance could occur at the same time within one material.
“This interdisciplinary research at the intersection of intelligent materials and mechanics opens new opportunities with broad implications for various fields like soft robotics and biomedical devices,” Sun said. Although it has not yet reached the market on a large scale, it holds great promise for future applications.
