Small Moves, Big Health
Since the launch of the “Small Moves, Big Health” activity, I’ve seized fragmented time to practice light exercise consistently.
During 10-minute class breaks, I skip rope with classmates. On my way to and from school, I walk 20 minutes instead of taking the bus. After evening self-study, I do 5-minute stretches to relax tired muscles. These tiny acts have become my daily routine.
The gains are remarkable. Physically, I’m more energetic in classes and rarely get sick. Mentally, short workouts relieve my study stress, helping me focus better. Truly, small consistent moves bring big health benefits. I’ll stick to these habits, as every tiny step leads to a healthier life.

This summer I faced three deep-rooted fears: heights, bears, and ageing. Two friends also in their seventies joined me on a four-day wilderness getaway. We agreed we should set out while we still had the courage and strength.
Our adventure began with a tense drive up a winding mountain road. On one hike, I found myself hanging onto a wire alongside a narrow bridge made of two partly rotten logs, suspended above violent rapids. I would never have dared to cross it without our guide moving ahead, murmuring encouragement. Fixing my gaze on her boots, I inched my way forward across the unsteady structure. Somehow I made it to the other side, overwhelmed by relief.
Later, after spotting fresh bear tracks, we were told to make loud noises — a practice that soon became a light-hearted game. We had just stepped across a shallow stream when our guide whispered, “There’s a bear.” I looked up and saw two: a sturdy brown mother bear with her cub following behind. Though frozen with fear, I admired how graceful they appeared. As they began moving toward us, we regained enough presence of mind to shout loudly and wave our hiking poles. Taken by surprise, the bears paused, then turned and retreated into the woods. Another fear was overcome!
On our final morning, we were asked to collect a meaningful stick, rock, and leaf. We would share what would “stick” with us, what had “rocked” our world, and what we hoped to “leaf” behind. The bond of friendship would stick with me. Women supporting one another truly rocked. And I hoped to leave some fears behind for good.
Our guide ended by expressing her admiration, praising not only our fitness but also our positive attitude, and saying she hoped to be like us in another thirty or forty years. Those unexpected words warmed my heart and eased my fear of being “over the hill”. Being valued for what we had accomplished felt like winning an Olympic medal — even if just for participation.

When mass commercialism and art mix, artistic integrity often suffers. I acknowledge artists need enough money to live on. Nevertheless, I don’t think art should be about trying to make as much money as humanly possible, and I can’t imagine ever being convinced otherwise.
Visual arts have often been a place for artists who stay true to their art to express themselves. Van Gogh sold one painting during his lifetime and is now considered one of the best artists ever to have lived. Although his lack of commercial success was a cause of suffering during his lifetime, it was probably also a source of his uniqueness. Van Gogh did not have artistic agents giving him market feedback, and he didn’t bend to market demands in order to sell his works.
The danger of pieces of art being sold for unreasonable amounts of money is that artists turn their works into brands. When art accumulates (积聚) that much commercial value, it starts being seen in the same way as a really flashy car that is too expensive to risk driving. A piece of art gets bought by a millionaire, and to accumulate value and minimize the risk of damage, he keeps it in his private museum. Ultimately, few people get the chance to appreciate it, especially since art museums can’t keep up with rising art prices. Even galleries as big as Tate Britain only have acquisition budgets of 5 million, and with the upcoming government cuts to the arts, this purchasing power will decrease continuously.
There’s a reason why Mark Rothko turned down the commission (委托制作) from the Four Seasons Restaurant. Rothko recognized how damaging the idea of making art purely for a paycheck was. He did not want his paintings to be merely used as decorative items in a luxurious restaurant, but hoped that they could be placed in a more suitable place where people could truly feel the spiritual power of his works.

In recent decades, experiments have begun to catch up with what people who work closely with animals have always known — that animals have an inner life, and that consciousness isn’t uniquely human.
Consciousness is a concept that is extremely difficult to define. There have been many attempts: is it awareness, or awareness of that awareness, or self-awareness instead But a useful working definition might be that it is any kind of subjective experience, ranging from how we perceive the external world to our inner thoughts and emotions. Because you can never be inside another living being’s head, questions of consciousness are both hard to answer and open to bias (偏见).
Findings of experiments inspired a group of scientists to write The New York Declaration Animal Consciousness in April, which now has over 300 supporters. It states that there is “strong scientific support for conscious experience” in mammals and birds and “at least a realistic possibility of conscious experience” in fish and other species.
That animals have some form of inner life must surely be self-evident to many people who live or work with them, just as I would guess that most carers of newborn babies don’t see these infants as senseless automatic machines. The experiences of people with thorough knowledge of either have historically been viewed as subjective and biased, as emotional connection tends to influence logical reasoning. Our consciousness leads us to over-empathize with others we cannot truly know, the argument goes.
But, as the biologist Marc Bekoff wrote, if we humans have something, then other animals are likely to have it too. I personally feel that attempts to divorce emotion, feeling and experience from how we see animals can be as unscientific. For too long, we assumed that humans are unique and that animals don’t feel pain or emotions the way we do, a convenient but cruel null hypothesis (无效假设), when we could have started from the position that perhaps they do instead.
