News podcasts give listeners a detailed insight into the news, all on their own time schedule. We’ve rounded up our top picks below to help you get stuck in.
Your Daily Drive
Available in most of the English-speaking world, “Your Daily Drive” is perfect for the relatively casual news fan who wants an overview of current affairs with their tunes. In other words, it’s basically a breakfast and/or drive time radio show. The news content is pulled together from The Wall Street Journal, NPR, PRI and local news partners, while the songs are based on your listening habits — your own personalised radio show!
Today, Explained
“Today, Explained” is Vox’s daily news explainer podcast. Hosts Sean Rameswaram and Noel King will guide you through the most important stories of the day. It is worth noting that it is a deeper analysis of the day’s news, picking up and more thoroughly exploring the stories behind the stories.
World Story of the Day
If you want to broaden your news diet a bit but you don’t have the time to be listening to long international feature shows, “World Story of the Day” is perfect, a sub-ten-minute daily news hit that brings a story from around the globe, generally — but not always — with a focus on what’s making international headlines.
The Globalist
If you’re looking for a serious international daily global news program to start your day, then “The Globalist” is a pretty solid recommendation. It offers a broad and informed overview of the day’s global news, including a review of Europe s front pages. It s a relatively conventional 60-minute news show that you can listen to live at 7 am GMT/8 am CET, but all episodes are available for download globally.

What does it mean to live a good life This question has been debated for centuries. In the field of psychology, two main concepts of the good life have been quite popular: A happy life full of pleasure and positive emotions, and a meaningful life full of purpose and sacrifice. But what if these aren’t the only options
In recent years, a long-neglected version of the good life has been receiving greater attention: the psychologically rich life. It is full of complex mental engagement, a wide range of intense and deep emotions, and diverse, novel, surprising and interesting experiences. Sometimes they are neither pleasant nor meaningful. However, they are rarely boring or monotonous.
After all, both happy and meaningful lives can become monotonous and repetitive. A person with a steady office job, married with children, may be satisfied and find his or her life meaningful and still be bored. Also, the psychologically rich life doesn’t necessarily involve economic richness. For instance, consider Hesse’s character Goldmund, who has no money but pursues the life of a free spirit.
Research has found psychological richness is related to, but partially distinct from, both happy and meaningful lives. Psychological richness is related with openness to experience and experiencing both positive and negative emotions more intensely. But is the psychologically rich life one that people actually want
In a new study, Oishi and his colleagues asked people in nine countries the degree to which they value a psychologically rich life, a happy life and a meaningful life. They found many people’s self-described ideal lives involve psychological richness. When forced to choose a life, however, the majority chose a happy life and a meaningful life. Even so, a minority of people still favored the psychologically rich life, ranging from 6.7% in Singapore to 16.8% in Germany.
These numbers went up when the desire for a psychologically rich life was measured indirectly. To understand what a person wishes their lives might have been, it is important to explore what people wish they had avoided in their lives. When asked what they regret most and whether undoing this event would have made their lives happier, more meaningful or psychologically richer, about 28% of Americans said undoing the regrettable event would have made their lives psychologically richer.
These findings suggest that while most people strive to be happy and have meaning in their lives, a sizable number of people are content merely living a psychologically rich existence.
As Oishi and his colleagues conclude, “We believe that taking the psychologically rich life seriously will deepen and enrich our understanding of well-being.” At the end of the day, there is no one singularly acceptable path to the good life. You have to find a path that works best for you.
4. According to the passage, the psychologically rich life _______.
A.means living a luxurious life
B.involves various intense emotions
C.combines pleasure with purpose
D.emphasizes openness and repetition
5. What does Oishi’s research indicate
A.The Germans prefer psychological richness to a happy life.
B.Undoing regrettable events has enriched many people’s lives.
C.A hidden desire for psychological richness exists among some people.
D.People with psychological richness tend to describe their lives as ideal.
6. We can learn from the passage that _______.
A.purpose outweighs pleasure in terms of significance
B.the choice of a good life differs from person to person
C.a positive mindset helps us understand our well-being
D.we should never be content and always strive for the best
7. What is the main purpose of the article

C.To persuade people to attain psychological richness.
D.To draw attention to a less familiar version of a good life.

In Jakarta, apart from the narrow, unpaved road, the two-meter-high concrete coastal wall is the only thing that separates Susan’s small restaurant from the sea. Her family depends on that wall. Growing up here, Susan used to play on the beach in front of her house. But by the 2000s the beach had disappeared, and the sea frequently flooded the neighborhood.
In 2002, the government built the coastal wall, to give the residents peace of mind and time-a respite (暂缓) from the steady sinking of the land under the city and the steady rising of the sea. But just five years later, in 2007, the wall proved no match for the worst floods in Jakarta’s modern history.
Jakarta is now sinking at a truly alarming rate-a rate that varies around the city but is up to 11 inches a year in the northern areas. About 40 percent of Jakarta is below sea level. By comparison, climate change is raising sea level by less than an inch a year. But sinking land and rising sea both point toward the same outcome: regular flooding in Jakarta. “Jakarta is the center of administration, economy, culture, and entertainment. Over the years Jakarta has grown into a big city with no environmental support system.” says Andy, a lecturer at the University of Indonesia. Ultimately that’s why it is sinking today.
The situation is one reason the government announced that the nation’s capital would be moved away to a new city to be built on Borneo, which is now forest. But local communities aren’t so happy with the plan. They fear the project would destroy their land, forest, and livelihoods. In Jakarta, on the other hand, those who welcome the decision arguing that it will ease Jakarta’s burdens of crowding and pollution.
But as the government leaves the sinking capital, what is to become of the 10 million people like Susan who still live there
8. What is the function of the coastal wall
A.To prevent the land from sinking.
B.To keep the residents from floods.
C.To stop the steady rising of the sea.
D.To restore the beach for the residents.
9. What can we learn about the floods from Paragraph 3
A.The floods were caused by nature and humans.
B.Climate change is the primary cause of the floods.
C.The rise of the sea level is the outcome of regular flooding.
D.The economic development has a great impact on the floods.
10. What can be learned from the passage about Jakarta
A.It is no longer the nation’s capital now.
B.It is an underdeveloped city with a large population.
C.Its residents suffer a lot from the plan of the government.
D.Its measures to protect the environment are far from satisfactory.
11. What is the author’s attitude to the plan of the government
A.Intolerant. B.Supportive. C.Worried. D.Indifferent.

Cathy Winston is a sports nutritionist. Among her regulars are athletes. Cathy thrives on the variety, with each new sport providing new challenges and a renewed appreciation of her chosen field of expertise. In her view, dealing with athletes from various sport backgrounds helps her become seasoned, which is a key part of being a successful nutritionist. “You have to understand nutrition and people, and then you can begin to work in this field,” she says. “Besides, in tennis you must learn to be reactive, because you don’t know how long the match lasts. However, it’s 90 minutes in football so you know what you’re fueling for.”
Regardless of the sport, Cathy’s attitude remains the same: Any athlete failing to respect nutrition is one who is failing to fulfill their potential. It’s a key part of the training process. It’s not just something that you take casually. She advises her athletes to hold nutrition in the same regard as they do their most crucial bit of equipment. “Just as you wouldn’t forget to put your shin pads (护腿板) or your boots in your kit bag, don’t forget to put in your drinks and your snacks. That informs how well you train, because you can’t get out if you haven’t put in.”
Nutritionists are sometimes unfairly represented as militant (斗志昂扬的) types telling what athletes can and can’t eat. But Cathy insists that when to eat is more important than what. “It’s about when’s the right time to have it in,” she says. It’s a message that Cathy says can take a while to sink in. “A lot of boxers say, ‘but bananas make you fat, right ’, and there’s this inherent belief that we mustn’t eat those kinds of things. But it’s not about what to cut out. It’s about making sure that you’ve got the foundation right for health and performance. It’s that one size fits one. It’s what works for you. To be an excellent athlete, you really need to be an exceptional eater.”
12. What does Cathy think about her job
A.It hardly faces new challenges in every competition.
B.It mainly focuses on the duration of matches.
C.It merely needs to understand nutrition and people.
D.It highly values experience and flexibility.
13. How does Cathy emphasize the importance of nutrition to athletes
A.By making a comparison. B.By analyzing a phenomenon.
C.By telling a story. D.By providing data.
14. According to Cathy, what is a fundamental principle behind successful sports nutrition
A.Focusing on the timing of the diet.
B.Cutting out specific foods from the diet.
C.Following a strict and militant diet plan.
D.Increasing the variety of foods.
15. What does the author intend to tell us
A.Food has a say in the sports field.
B.Nutritionists act as unsung heroes behind athletes.
C.Nutrition determines the results in the competition.
D.A good eater is a great athlete.

Poor Sleep and Loneliness: A Vicious Cycle
The feeling of being lonely is the sense that you have less social contact with others than you want. It is not quite the same as the amount of social contact you have. Some people don’t engage that often with others, but they are perfectly fine with that, and so they don’t feel alone. 16 Being lonely is associated with poorer psychological health.
One area of research has focused specifically on the relationship between loneliness and sleep. There are several inter-related questions: Is feeling lonely related to the quality of people’s sleep What aspects of sleep are related to loneliness And does loneliness cause sleep problems, or do difficulties with sleeping lead to feelings of loneliness 17
The relationship between loneliness and sleep was explored in a paper by Melanie Hom and Caol Chu in the September 2020 issue of Clinical Psychological Science. They analyzed the data of previous studies relating sleep quality to feelings of loneliness. 18 This relationship is stronger for insomnia (失眠症) than for sleep complaints like nightmares. In addition, the more loneliness people express, the less effective they think their sleep is.
Although poor sleep and loneliness are closely related, it is hard to determine whether loneliness causes sleep difficulties or the reverse (相反).
19 It is because you can look to see whether sleep difficulties at one time predict later feelings of loneliness or whether loneliness early on predicts later sleep difficulties. Interestingly, sleep problems predicted later loneliness and loneliness predicted later sleep difficulties. However, the connection between earlier sleep difficulties and later loneliness was generally stronger than that between earlier loneliness and later sleep difficulties. This pattern suggests that there may be a vicious cycle, though, in which poor sleep can increase feelings of loneliness, which can in turn increase sleep difficulties.
If you are someone who has trouble sleeping, be aware that poor sleep lowers your resilience (复原力) overall. Among other things, it may make it harder for you to appreciate the social contacts you have. 20 That added social engagement just might have a positive impact on your future sleep.
A.Long-term studies that follow the same people over time help.
B.If you have difficulty in social engagement, you may feel lonely.
C.Other people may spend a lot of time with others, but still long for more.
D.These issues are important because poor sleep can affect psychological health.
E.To solve the problem, you should monitor your sleeping quality and physical health.
F.If you have trouble sleeping, try spending more time reaching out to friends and loved ones.
G.The results indicate that the more sleep difficulties people express they have, the lonelier they feel.

I have spent my whole life as a teacher—first teaching at a high school and for the past 50 years working as a speaker and trainer in the human development field. I am often on the road three weeks out of every month flying from city to city to conduct one-day workshops and week-long training sessions. In other words, I have almost no time for other things.
I learned early on that if you want a concept or principle to be remembered, you must illustrate it with a moving story. So I had always collected and used a lot of stories to drive home the points I was teaching in my seminars(研讨会)about the importance of acting from love, believing in yourself and your dreams, always following your heart, trusting your intuition(直觉), setting high goals, overcoming obstacles, and never ever giving up on your dreams.
Two years ago, a strange thing happened. One day, out of the blue, someone asked me, “Is that story you told about the Girl Scout who sold 3,526 boxes of Girl Scout Cookies in one year in a book anywhere My daughter needs to read it.” The very next day someone asked, “That story about the boy and the puppy—is that in a book anywhere I need to read it to my son.” It continued day after day for the next month. “I need to read that story about the boy with one leg who became a star to my staff. I need to show them that they really have no excuses not to excel in life.” “Is that story you told about the boy who was burned in the motorcycle accident in a book anywhere I want to send it to my son in college.”
I was busy with work. I had countless stories, but they were all over the place, in my head or on old notes. I knew I couldn’t meet these demands while keeping up with my teaching.
One evening, an idea suddenly struck me.

Show up for Inter-class Running
Nowadays, quite a few students in our school ask for leave from inter-class running with various excuses, ranging from slight physical discomfort to unfinished schoolwork.
In fact, this daily running is a precious chance to build up our physique and ease study pressure. We should take it seriously rather than making up excuses to skip it. If you really cannot run due to health issues, do offer a formal doctor’s note. Otherwise, just step out of the classroom and join your classmates in this beneficial exercise.
第二节 参考范文
One evening, an idea suddenly struck me. Why not compile these powerful stories into a book Although I was occupied with my teaching career, I realized the significance of sharing these stories in a more accessible way. I decided to spare some time each day to sort out the stories. I gathered all my old notes and spent hours recalling the details of each story from my memory. It was a challenging task, but the thought of helping others with these inspiring stories motivated me. I carefully selected the most impactful stories and arranged them in an engaging order.
When it eventually came out, the book became an immediate best-seller. People from all walks of life were attracted to these stories. Parents bought it to read to their children, hoping to inspire them with positive values. Teachers used it as a teaching resource in their classes. Employees found motivation in the stories to overcome difficulties at work. I received countless letters and emails from readers, sharing how the stories had changed their lives. I was deeply touched by these feedbacks and felt that all my efforts were worthwhile. It also made me realize that the power of stories is truly limitless.
