That friendly voice from your phone guiding you to new places is closely connected with Gladys West. Modern navigation (导航) has its roots in the satellite science lab where West studied the Earth’s shape. As a determined Black woman, she earned full scholarships to complete her math degrees at Virginia State University.
Electronics in guidance systems were in their early stage in 1955, when West began her career. She had grown up on the family farm, and though she was self-motivated to study, she was a rarity in mathematics, not only as a woman but as a Black mathematician. Not discouraged, she put her mind to solving problems.
She began by analyzing the Earth orbits of satellites. It might seem simple to calculate the distance around a perfect ball, but the shape of the Earth is not perfect. It is egg-shaped and has geographical as well as gravitational variations due to the tidal (潮汐的) forces that affect the course of a satellite. West developed algorithms (算法) to account for the variations and, through the 1970s and 1980s, programmed an IBM computer to deliver ever-increasingly accurate calculations for the shape of the Earth.
West seldom protested the unfairness around her, for she could not afford to lose her job. Instead, she kept working to improve travel navigation. Her life and work not only give us daily directions but also inspire young people to rise above difficult situations.
“I’m a doer, a hands-on kind of person,” West once said. “If I can see the road and see where it turns and see where it goes, I am more sure.”
For all of us, we are grateful to West for making that map a little easier to follow. The next time you arrive on time, having avoided construction and delays, and hear that friendly voice say, “You have arrived,” give a nod and respond, “Thank you, West. I have arrived at a better place because of you.”
4. What does paragraph 2 mainly tell us about Gladys West
A.She was courageous.

C.Well begun is half done.
D.Lost time is never found.
6. Which word can best describe West’s contribution in paragraph 6
A.Record-breaking.
B.Time-consuming.
C.Life-improving.
D.Energy-wasting.
7. What is West’s main achievement
A.She explores the space stars.
B.She helps us find our way.

For decades, mathematics has been commonly thought to be a discipline that requires creativity, judgment and careful thinking, which can never be fully copied by plex proofs and the joy of discovery were thought to be beyond the reach of artificial intelligence. But this era is coming to an end. Driven by AI systems that have advanced from solving textbook problems to contributing to cutting-edge research, mathematics is experiencing the biggest change in its history, challenging people’s long-held assumptions about what machines can and cannot do.
The rapid development of AI has been totally unexpected for everyone, including some experts. In March 2025, Daniel Litt, a mathematician at the University of Toronto, made a public bet with a colleague that AI would have only a 25% chance of autonomously producing a top-level mathematical paper by 2030. As a well-known figure who doubted the overstated power of AI, he was confident in his bet. However, just one year later, he declared on his blog that he expected to lose the bet, as AI’s progress in mathematics over the 12 months was much faster than he had predicted.
A few years ago, AI struggled to solve high school math problems consistently, but now it can tackle research-level questions and even achieve gold-medal-level results in the International Mathematics Olympiad. AI systems like DeepMind’s Aletheia can propose proof strategies and solve research problems, though verifying (验证) their results remains a challenge. Meanwhile, AI has been integrated into research workflows, automating the verification of complex proofs that once took experts months to finish.
While some mathematicians worry that over-reliance on AI may reduce human creativity, many remain optimistic. They believe mathematics will adapt to this change, as it has done before. Litt’s bet has become a marker of this shift, showing that mathematics is being remade and the role of mathematicians is being redefined. In this new era, AI is not replacing humans but cooperating with them, reshaping the field of mathematics that has stood for thousands of years.
8. What is mathematics universally acknowledged from the text
A.It’s unique to human beings.
B.It’s driven by the AI systems.
C.It’s easy for machines to master.
D.It’s based on conventional thinking.
9. Why is the bet of Daniel Litt mentioned
A.To spread a strategy.
B.To explain a rule.
C.To make an attempt.
D.To prove a point.
10. What is paragraph 3 mainly about
A.The tasks AI fails to finish.
B.The strategies AI uses in research.
C.The limits of AI in mathematics.
D.The progress of AI in mathematics.
11. What is the best title for the text
A.Is AI Reshaping Mathematics
B.Will AI Dominate Mathematics
C.Does AI Change Mathematical Proof
D.Can AI Replace Human Mathematicians

Oil-burning engines are more than a reliable power source for modern society. They play an irreplaceable role in transportation, agriculture, and industrial equipment due to their strong power and stable performance, yet they’re a significant source of air pollution. A research team has developed Water-in-Diesel Emulsion (WiDE) technology that mixes tiny water droplets (水滴) into oil fuel, offering a simpler and cleaner option for existing oil-burning engines without any changes.
Unlike conventional emission-reduction (减排) technologies such as exhaust cleaners and special chemicals that increase engine cost and complexity, the new WiDE technology mixes extremely small water droplets into oil fuel, and special mixing chemicals keep the water and oil evenly mixed, allowing the mixture to remain stable for up to six days. When this mixed fuel burns inside the engine, water droplets rapidly turn into steam, causing a “micro-explosion” that breaks fuel into finer bits, reducing harmful emissions while maintaining the engine’s original power.
Tests showed engines running on WiDE can significantly reduce harmful pollutants compared with standard oil fuel. Specifically, nitrogen oxide (氮氧化物) emissions dropped by 67%, while small dust pieces declined by 68%. These remarkable reductions should be put down to the “micro-explosion” effect and improved air-fuel mixing.
In addition to cutting pollution, experiments reported obvious improvements in heat efficiency, meaning engines not only produced cleaner exhaust but also used fuel more efficiently. Moreover, with continued development, WiDE could work alongside other clean technologies like plant oil fuel, laying a solid foundation for broader climate and air quality goals and heralding a cleaner energy future, acting as a crucial bridge between traditional fuel systems and the next generation of sustainable energy solutions.
Although laboratory results are promising, researchers state that further efforts are still required for real-world application. Later investigations should center on enhancing substance combinations and judging their lasting impact on machinery elements. “This technology can connect the divide between traditional oil usage and a greener energy tomorrow,” said co-author Professor Emeka Emmanuel Oguzie. “It provides an instant way to cut releases in both developing and developed nations.”
12. What is WiDE technology intended for
A.Boosting engines’ power.
B.Improving the stability of oil fuel.
C.Cutting pollution from oil-engines.
D.Simplifying droplets’ mixing process.
13. What can we infer about the new WiDE technology
A.It needs special exhaust cleaners.
B.It has a far more practical design.
C.It lowers the engine’s total power.
D.It mixes modern and traditional ideas.
14. What does the underlined word “heralding” in paragraph 4 probably mean
A.Signaling.
B.Changing.
C.Hiding.
D.Limiting.
15. What is Emeka’s attitude toward WiDE
A.Doubtful.
B.Dismissive.
C.Negative.
D.Approving.

Some foods are more likely to carry harmful germs (细菌) that can make people sick. 16 To protect ourselves and our families from these risks, we should follow four simple but important steps for food safety: Clean, Separate, Cook, and Chill (冷却).
Cleaning is the first line of our defense. 17 Wash our hands with soap for at least 20 seconds before preparing food. Also, clean tools and kitchen worktops with warm water and soap. Remember to wash our hands after touching raw food.
18 Raw meat, fish, seafood and eggs carry harmful germs. These germs can easily spread to other foods. We should keep raw food away from ready-to-eat food when shopping. We can use sealed (密封的) containers to stop their juices from leaking. We need different cutting boards for raw and other food. We must not wash raw chicken. It will spread germs around the kitchen.
How can we kill harmful germs in food We must cook food to the right temperatures. We can check the food appearance to make sure it is safe. 19 Different foods need different temperatures. Heat food well in the microwave. Reheated food must reach 165°F to be safe.
We should keep food in the fridge in time. Bacteria grow quickly between 40°F and 140°F. 20 Keep the fridge cold enough. Put hot food in small boxes before cooling. We can melt frozen food safely in the fridge. Never leave it on the table. This helps stop bacteria from growing fast.
A.Do not leave food outside for over two hours.
B.However, we cannot judge safety by looks alone.
C.All these steps help keep us safe from food poisoning.
D.To keep food safe and clean, we need to separate different kinds of food.
E.Germs that cause food poisoning can survive on many surfaces and spread easily.
F.We should also throw away any food recalled for safety reasons without hesitation.
G.These risky foods can spread germs to you and other foods and cause food poisoning.

Our friend Bob Faust had been fighting a serious illness for six months, having taken part in an experimental treatment program at the local medical center in Houston, Texas. Though the treatment was tough and exhausting, Bob never lost his courage and optimism. When my husband Art and I asked him whether he wanted to take a driving trip to Mexico to relax and recharge, he firmly said, “Yes.” His wife Debbie supported him wholeheartedly, and his doctors agreed, stopping his treatment temporarily to let him enjoy the journey. After Christmas, with the hope of a new year and Bob’s positive spirit guiding us, the four of us headed off on a memorable Mexican adventure.
We all wanted to make this trip special for Bob, as he had gone through great hardships from his illness. Unexpectedly, Bob lifted our spirits with his humor and enthusiasm. When we crossed the Tropic of Cancer (北回归线) and I asked for a photo stop, Art pulled over, Debbie laughed, and Bob playfully complained, “Cancer, oh, no.” We all burst out laughing right after.
As keen birdwatchers, we visited a flower-filled park famous for special birds. When Bob saw buzzards (秃鹫) circling above, he raised his fist and shouted, “Go away! I’m not done yet!” His lively humor filled the trip with joy and made us forget his sufferings.
Our days in Mexico were filled with laughter and pleasant surprises, all thanks to Bob’s positive attitude. Once, returning from Tamaazunchale, Art spotted colorful birds in an orange garden and drove onto a private road. We enjoyed birdwatching for half an hour before a black truck approached — the landowner and his workers asked about our breaking in. Art explained anxiously, and luckily, the landowner welcomed us warmly and gave us two bags of delicious oranges, which Bob enjoyed deeply. On New Year’s Eve, we attended a local party, made friends with Bob’s help, and followed the grape-eating tradition. Back in our room, we celebrated with Bob’s special drinks, finishing two bottles happily before bed.
When heading back, our car broke down unexpectedly.

During the activity, teachers will give lectures on traditional good virtues. Excellent students will share their civilized daily manners, which will be followed by group discussions on regulating in-school behaviors.
All participants should arrive ten minutes early and keep quiet while listening. It’s advised to take notes for future self-improvement. All students are warmly welcome.
第二节 参考范文
When heading back, our car broke down unexpectedly. We got stuck on a remote rural road far from nearby towns, with no mobile signal to call for help. A sense of worry crept over us instantly. However, optimistic Bob cheered everyone up right away. He took out the remaining sweet oranges gifted by the garden owner and suggested an impromptu roadside picnic. While having fruit, we talked about funny experiences on the trip, including his jokes at the Tropic of Cancer and his playful warning to buzzards. His constant humor drove away our anxiety.
When the repairmen arrived, we’d turned the long wait into joy. They were greatly surprised to see us enjoying ourselves instead of feeling annoyed. After they finished repairing the car efficiently, they shared homemade local candies with us. The sudden breakdown turned into another precious surprise of our journey. Filled with warmth, we restarted our trip home, grateful for Bob’s positive outlook that turned every accident into wonderful memories.。
