With the rise of smartphones and more hobby options, many people worry that fewer young people read books. The report Teenager Reading in the Digital Age, published in April 2024, examined how much teenagers read for leisure.
A research team led by Leonie Rutherford, a specialist in young people and media at Deakin University in Australia, surveyed 13,000 high school students about their free-time reading habits between March 2022 and June 2023. Here are the results of the survey.
The study also looked at reading blogs, online magazines, and news media. Most students read these forms weekly or less often. Only 10% said they read them every day, while more than a third never read them at all. Listening to audiobooks was also uncommon, with only 13% of students reporting that they listened to audiobooks in their free time.
Given these findings, the researchers suggest efforts to increase reading among young people. They point out that reading for leisure can improve vocabulary and contextual knowledge, support better school grades, enhance employment opportunities, and promote mental well-being. Supporting this view, a paper published in 2012 by a professor of educational research at the University of Bamberg in Germany showed that continuous reading leads to improved reading and writing skills, and that it is important to read books, rather than short content such as e-mails and blogs.

It’s a good idea to shake many of the things you have learned over the years out of your mind. Some are outdated, some incorrect and some too obvious. We also need a fresh approach to things of interest, to see them as though for the first time — this approach would help make a thing “strange” and help us avoid prejudice.
Years ago, when I first came across the idea that knowledge isn’t always a good thing, I used to wonder if this was anti-intellectualism. I kept finding the idea in the works of many brilliant thinkers that I admired. I loved to read and study, and I knew they did. In fact, this idea doesn’t mean rejecting knowledge, but emphasizing the value of “not-knowing” while learning. When you develop “not-knowing” along with learning, you also allow room for mystery, for the profound and inexplicable (费解的) parts of life that give you a sense of awe (敬畏). An appreciation of the unknowable keeps you honest and humble in the best way. The truly wise person knows how important it is not to know everything.
So why were they so “negative” about knowledge Here’s poet David Hinton’s translation of chapter 71 of the Tao Te Ching to explain this: “If you know the importance of not knowing everything, or anything for that matter, you’re way ahead. If you don’t, you’ll be under the dangerous illusion (幻觉) that you know what life is all about. The starting point toward wisdom is to acknowledge your basic ignorance.”
We often fall into the trap of thinking we know everything, which stops us from gaining real wisdom — and this is the problem we need to solve. The solution is to admit to our ignorance and clear our minds of preconceptions. These are Thoreau’s recommendations: Simply focus on what you are concerned with instead of relying on authorities. Then, aim for “total comprehension” and not just simple recognition.

For several years now, the countryside has no longer functioned merely as a picturesque counterpoint (对应物) to the city but has become an active laboratory for new relationships between landscape and people. Trace of Land, designed by ELSE Design Studio, is one of the examples.
ELSE reinterprets the hay bale (干草捆) as a spatial installation (装置) that unfolds across the fields of Val Badia in the Italian Dolomites. Presented as part of the international open-air art event — SMACH 2025, the project transforms an agricultural object into a canopy-like (类顶棚的) structure that follows the landscape, offering places for shade, rest, and gathering.
The land art installation is a continuous path made of unfolded hay bales. It moves with the outline of the Alpine landscape. Removed from its functional role in farming, the hay bale becomes both sculptural and architectural, drawing attention to the relationship between human labor, tools, and the land.
Often seen as typical parts of farm life, hay bales are in fact products of industrialized processes, stored and transported by machinery. In Trace of Land, this industrial form is loosened and reshaped, creating a structure that switches between lying on the ground and lifting lightly to form shaded passages. The result is a temporary canopy that strikes a balance between agricultural efficiency and natural setting. In line with this year’s SMACH theme, hay bales represent the reciprocal relationship between human and the land, enhancing the dialogue between people and the environment.
Visitors are invited to walk along and beneath the structure, using box-shaped bales arranged as seating to pause and reflect. As time passes, the hay will naturally break down, returning to the soil and completing a cycle of use and renewal.
