Rat shook his head with a smile. “Not yet. It’s not as easy as it looks.”
Mole was quiet, but he wanted to row indeed. He was sure he could row as well as Rat. Then, before Rat could stop him, he jumped up, and pulled the oars out of the surprised Rat’s hands. Rat fell off his seat, calling out, “Stop! You’ll have us in the river!”

“Never mind!” replied Rat kindly. “I’m always in and out of the water myself, so don’t worry about it. I’ll teach you to row and to swim.”
Mole found no words to say at that moment.

Scientists from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have made a new “bubble wrap” that can collect clean drinking water from the air—even in Death Valley, the driest desert in North America.
This invention could help many people around the world get safe drinking water, especially in places where water is hard to find. The team shared their results in a study on June 11, 2025.
The device uses a water-absorbing material called hydrogel (水凝胶), placed between two layers of glass, much like a window. At night, it takes water vapor from the air. During the day, the water vapor turns into liquid on the cool glass and then flows into small tubes.
The hydrogel has many small domes, like bubble wrap. These domes grow bigger when they take in water from the air. They increase the surface area, helping the material collect more water.
Scientists tested the device for one week in Death Valley. Each panel made about 57 to 161 milliliters of water daily—about a quarter to two-thirds of a cup. In wetter areas, it could make even more. The device also works without electricity.
Older designs had a problem: lithium (锂) salt, used to help take in water, sometimes leaked (泄漏) into the water and made it dangerous to drink. But this new design uses glycerol (甘油) which keeps the salt from leaking. This way, the lithium salt level stays far below safety limits.
Eight panels (each about 1 metre by 2 metres) could provide enough water for a family. The system is not too expensive and can last at least a year.
“We imagine these panels could be used in many places,” said MIT researcher Xuanhe Zhao. “They don’t take up much space, and people can build more of them to make a real difference.”
42.Why was the bubble wrap invented
A. To store water in dry deserts.
B. To cool houses in hot areas.
C. To collect drinking water from the air.
D. To make dry places wetter.
43.Where did scientists test the new water-collecting device
A. In a wet forest in North America.
B. In Death Valley.
C. In MIT’s laboratory.
D. In a city with serious water problems.
44.How does the new design make the collected water safer to drink than older ones
A. It uses no lithium salt at all.
B. It works without electricity.
C. It can clean the water automatically.
D. It uses glycerol to stop lithium salt from leaking.
45.What can we infer from the passage
A. Making the collected water safe was a big step.
B. This is the first time scientists have tried to get water from air.
C. Working with less power is the device’s most important feature.
D. People need to build a special room for the device.
