In recent years, China has become a leader in new inventions, especially in technology. From high-speed trains to mobile payment, Chinese innovations (创新) are changing people’s lives and attracting worldwide attention.
China’s high-speed rail network is the longest in the world. The trains can run at speeds of up to three hundred and fifty kilometers per hour, making travel between cities much faster and more convenient. This technology has been exported (出口) to other countries, showing China’s growing influence in railway technology.
Mobile payment is another area where China leads. Apps like Alipay and WeChat Pay allow people to pay for almost anything with their phones. Even street vendors (小贩) and small shops accept mobile payments. This has made China a nearly cashless society.
Chinese companies are leaders in many fields. For example, Huawei excels (擅长) in 5G technology, Xiaomi in AI and smart devices, and BYD in electric vehicles (电车).

Have you ever wondered why we say “mǎi dōngxi” (go shopping) or “yìjiàn xiāngzuǒ” (have different opinions) Many Chinese expressions have interesting stories behind them.
When we say “mǎi dōngxi”, it might come from two ancient markets in the Tang Dynasty—the East Market and the West Market in Chang’an. People often shopped at both, so the phrase came to mean “shopping”.
The phrase “yìjiàn xiāngzuǒ” uses “zuǒ” (left) to mean “different”. In old times, since most people were right-handed, using the left hand seemed different or strange. So “zuǒ” came to describe disagreement.
“Zuǒ” and “yòu” (right) also had to do with social position. “Yòu” often meant higher rank. But in some cases, “zuǒ” also meant to serve or protect others.
We also say “shàng cèsuǒ” (go up to the bathroom) and “xià chúfáng” (go down to the kitchen). In ancient house designs, the bathroom was in the northern part of the house and kitchen in the southern part. On maps, north is up and south is down. That’s how “shàng” and “xià” became connected to these rooms.
These sayings show how language keeps old customs alive.根据短文内容,判断下列句子正(T)、误(F)。
46. The phrase “mǎi dōngxi” possibly came from two markets in ancient Chang’an.
47. “Yìjiàn xiāngzuǒ” means having the same opinion.
48. In ancient China, “yòu” always meant lower social position.
49. People say “shàng cèsuǒ” because bathrooms were usually in the southern part of a house.
50. This article explains the history behind some common Chinese phrases.

Walking Backward: A Surprising Way to Improve Memory and Health
Need to remember facts fast before an exam Walking backward might help. UK scientists at the University of Roehampton studied 114 volunteers who watched a video. Afterward, one group walked forward, another walked backward, and a third stood still. All were then tested on the video. The backward-walking group scored two more correct answers than the others.
Why does this work The lead researcher, Aleksandar Aksentijevic, explains that time and memory are connected to space in our minds. Moving backward physically seems to help people remember the past more easily.
This simple activity isn’t just good for your brain. It is good for your body too. It’s more challenging than walking forward, burning more calories in a short time. It’s also easier on the knees and can help strengthen your spine (脊椎), reducing back pain. This may be why it’s a popular exercise among some older adults.
