How to Get on Well with Our Parents
Nowadays, teenagers are having trouble in getting along with parents.Indeed, how to live happily with parents is an important subject.
From my point of view,it is normal to have heated arguments between teenagers and their parents. On the one hand, whenever it happens, teenagers should calm down and think through what their parents say because each parent is concerned about his or her child. On the other hand, parents shouldn't view teenagers as children but treat them like friends. Most importantly, they should put themselves in their children's shoes because teenagers have a desire for their parents' understanding and support.
In conclusion, teenagers and parents should learn to live in harmony with each other.

(2026·重庆模拟)
We began the bus trips when I was around seven years old.Back then,we lived at our grandparents' house in Oceanside,California.Finances were tight since my father had retired from the Air Force and had yet to find steady employment. In addition,we were struggling to find an affordable place to call our own.
I suppose it would have been easy to give in to frustration. But my mom had other ideas, using the situation to give my brother Jess and me fond memories that would affect our perspective forever. However,I only appreciated the full extent of her wisdom many years later.
As it was, once or twice a week,my mom would lead Jess and me up the slope (斜坡) from our grandparents' house to the nearest bus stop, and from there we would go on to “see the world”.The public transportation system around the area was remarkably extensive. For a very low fee,it was possible to purchase a ticket that allowed riders to go aboard all the buses they wanted throughout an entire day.My mom studied this system well, and she would guide us to a wide variety of destinations.
Among our most frequented points of interest was the mall in Carlsbad. There was a large, glass clock tower that stood at its very heart. It featured gears (齿轮) and other mechanisms that rolled rubber balls along rails, bouncing them onto drums and then ramps (坡道),and sending them back up in little elevators to make the whole journey again. The sight always drew a small crowd throughout the day, mostly children.
We would window-shop at the mall and in the surrounding neighborhood. We weren't there to buy.The goal was to enjoy the sights and do some people-watching too.
On other adventures,we would take the bus all the way to Strand Beach, where we collected sand dollars and shells for souvenirs. We would watch ships sail past in the distance and often heard helicopters or other aircraft soar overhead on their way to the naval base at Camp Pendleton.

(2025·山东日照三模)
Now controversial new technologies promise parents even more control over their embryos (胚胎).Today,a lot of those “designer babies”are teenagers. And some families are discovering that things don't always work out as planned;the kids feel like walking science experiments; the parents are disappointed in how their children turned out.Fertility (生育) businesses are selling a chance for domestic welfare, and these families feel cheated.
People who have children this way often place too much importance on genes while ignoring the environment. It's like,“This is what our family is going to look like. We're going to pick a kid,and this is how we're going to put it together.”It's like a project or building a company.People don't always realize they are creating a human being and not a piece of furniture. They tend to get what they want and don't hear “no”a lot.So when their kid shows up and isn't the way that they want, what happens
Usually,it's a disaster. In these homes,a high value gets placed on achievement.I think the way these kids are created sends the message:“You're not good enough. You need to achieve.”When the kids struggle,it's especially devastating. The child grows up feeling very different, knowing they were an experiment but not getting the proper support or acceptance they need to grow.
In my work,I help parents accept:This is the child you have.I help them make abstract concepts more concrete.Sometimes just explaining “you and your child are not the same person”does the trick. And I help kids accept the reality of their parents.Or say a teenager doesn't feel loved,I might need to clarify to them that “love”is not a tangible feeling, like getting kicked. It means someone feels fondness toward you like you feel fondness toward candies or toys.
Trying to control your child is a recipe for disaster. The kid is going to rebel (反抗) .I don't know if anyone's making sure parents understand that they can't test-drive a child and then return it.You probably can predict stocks, but human behavior has far too many variables.
【语篇解读】 本文是一篇议论文。文章通过分析“设计婴儿”引发的家庭问题,探讨基因技术与家庭教育的伦理冲突,并提出倡导接纳孩子本真的观点。
5.What does the author stress regarding “designer babies”in paragraph 1
A.The high expectations from their parents.
B.The psychological impact on their families.
C.The intentional cheating from fertility businesses.
D.The moral issues surrounding genetic engineering.

B [细节理解题。根据第一段中“And some families are discovering that things don‘t always work out as planned;the kids feel like walking science experiments;the parents are disappointed in how their children turned out.”可知,作者强调“设计婴儿”给家庭带来的心理影响,包括孩子的自我认知偏差和父母的失望情绪。故选B。]
6.What is a common problem for families with “designer babies”?
A.The children often rebel against their parents.
B.The parents are too focused on genetic perfection.
C.The children feel like they are science experiments.
D.The parents are unable to afford to raise their children.

B [细节理解题。根据第二段中“People who have children this way often place too much importance on genes while ignoring the environment.”可知,这类家庭的共同问题是父母过于关注基因完美,将孩子视为可设计的“项目”而非独立个体。故选B。]
7.What does the underlined word “devastating”in paragraph 3 mean
A.Confusing. B.Doubtful.
C.Challenging. D.Harmful.

D [词义猜测题。根据第三段中“ When the kids struggle,it's especially devastating. The child grows up feeling very different, knowing they were an experiment but not getting the proper support or acceptance they need to grow.”可知,父母对成就的过度重视导致孩子在受挫时受到严重伤害,所以猜测devastating意为“毁灭性的、有害的”,与D项Harmful一致。故选D。]
8.What is the author's suggestion for parents of “designer babies”?
A.Invest more in genetic research.
B.Accept their children as they are.
C.Focus more on their children's achievements.
D.Seek professional help to shape their children.

B [推理判断题。根据第四段中“In my work,I help parents accept:This is the child you have.I help them make abstract concepts more concrete.Sometimes just explaining ‘you and your child are not the same person’ does the trick.”可推知,作者建议父母接受孩子的本真而非试图控制其基因或成长轨迹。故选B。]

One day, everything changed. At the grocery store,my daughter complained,“You're so slow!”She crossed her arms and sighed (叹气) 6 .Suddenly,I saw in her how I pushed her to hurry all the time, and how my hurried lifestyle was 7 her.

This year,I received an exciting message from the Science Center:out of nearly 2,000 applicants, only 40 high school students were selected to take part in their famous summer program, and I was one of them! 1 .
For the two-week summer program,I chose to focus on a biology project. My research centered on investigating the presence and impact of bacteria (细菌) in different water sources—specifically comparing wild lake water with home pool water to determine which was more harmful. 2 .Those are two fields I'm deeply passionate about.
The laboratory work was challenging but extremely rewarding.I remember the first day I set out to collect water samples. The lake was peaceful, but beneath that calm surface hid something far less harmless. In contrast, the pool's crystal-clear water seemed almost too clean, and I wondered how the tests would turn out.
3 .The process involved culturing the bacteria, monitoring their growth and comparing the results from both sources. When the data finally came in,it was both shocking and enlightening. The pool water was surprisingly clean, with hardly any bacteria present. On the other hand, the lake water, despite its beautiful appearance, was full of bacteria—definitely not safe for drinking. 4 .
Once my experiments were complete,I poured all my energy into writing a detailed report. On the last day of the program,I had the opportunity to present my work to a group of 15 mentors (导师). 5 —I was not just a student;I was like a scientist sharing my discoveries with the world.
A.Back in the lab,I analyzed the samples
B.Standing before them,explaining my project,I felt proud
C.I hope to undertake a biomedical project at the Science Center
D.My time at the Science Center has given me a clear sense of purpose
E.These results highlighted the hidden dangers that untreated water can pose
F.The moment I opened that letter,I knew this was going to be a life-changing experience
G.This topic interested me because it combined both environmental science and public health

Practising gratitude has a host of benefits for our well-being.It's good for our happiness and life satisfaction, reduces anxiety and depression, strengthens the immune system, etc. If gratitude is good
for us personally, then can its benefits spill over from parents to their children and families, too That's the question researchers Katherine Nelson-Coffey and John Coffey explored in a recent study.
Across one week, the researchers surveyed 270 parents on the gratitude they felt each day. They also surveyed parents every day on their well-being,including positive and negative emotions.
The researchers also captured parents' daily family functioning every day. They surveyed how much closeness parents felt toward their children each day. They also asked parents to write about a time each day—easy or hard—when they provided care for their child. The researchers used these daily diaries to measure how much parents' interactions with their children were marked by conflict, support—warmth and kindness—and challenges while providing care.
In analyzing these data, researchers found that parents tended to experience greater daily well-being—fewer negative emotions, and more positive and empathic emotions, life satisfaction, meaning in their lives, connectedness to others, and autonomy—on days when they felt more gratitude than usual, regardless of how much daily happiness they felt.
What's more, parents tended to feel greater closeness and less conflict with their children on days when they felt more gratitude than usual, regardless of how challenging it was for them to care for their children each day.
“Our research suggests that parents can improve their well-being,relationships with their children, and family functioning, not necessarily by engaging in more intense parenting practices or increasing engagement with their children, but by practising simple positive activities—namely, gratitude,”explains Nelson-Coffey and Coffey.
As parents,we're already busy,so adding more to a long list of parenting dos and don'ts in our daily lives can add a lot more stress. For a lot of us,a simple gratitude practice like writing a gratitude letter or in a gratitude journal,or just taking a few moments for a gratitude reflection at the end of the workday, can be doable and effective in strengthening our own well-being and family relationships.

In countries like Pakistan,it is a moral value that the elders make decisions for the young,no matter how big or personal the matter is,like their careers or even their weddings.
I am not saying that these decisions totally go wrong or something. They are quite experienced people and have seen highs and lows of life, and some of the decisions are really judicious ploys and it is helpful when the kids can't decide or they feel confused. But people don't really face the same experiences in their lives. It worsens when the elders almost force their children to follow what they feel is right for them.
Robert, brother of my friend was forced to be a doctor when he really wanted to do hotel management and the guy is fed up with his life as he is sensitive and can't stand burnt or injured people. This could easily have been avoided if his parents respected their son's wish and helped him on his way.How can somebody do something well when not interested in it He would make matters worse for him and also for the people around him.
One of the reasons for this is that parents want to secure the future for their kids,as every parent rightfully would feel that only a few notable professions are respected or give enough outcome to lead a successful life. One more thing here is that many parents are most enthusiastic about things which are the flavour of the month and supported by the government, really ignoring permanent factors.
Another thing is inherited (继承的) professions like a barber's son would have to be a barber and a businessman's son must look after his family business.
I have a suggestion that the parents should let their children decide what is good or bad for themselves and if the parents have some reservations about it,then they must discuss it with their kids and take them in confidence over it.

How to Avoid Raising a Spoiled Child

Now controversial new technologies promise parents even more control over their embryos (胚胎).Today,a lot of those “designer babies” are teenagers.
We're going to pick a kid,and this is how we're going to put it together.” It's like a project or building a company.People don't always realize they are creating a human being and not a piece of furniture. They tend to get what they want and don't hear “no” a lot.So when their kid shows up and isn't the way that they want, what happens
Usually,it's a disaster. In these homes,a high value gets placed on achievement.I think the way these kids are created sends the message: “You're not good enough. You need to achieve.” When the kids struggle,it's especially devastating. The child grows up feeling very different, knowing they were an experiment but not getting the proper support or acceptance they need to grow.
In my work,I help parents accept: This is the child you have.I help them make abstract concepts more concrete.Sometimes just explaining “you and your child are not the same person” does the trick. And I help kids accept the reality of their parents.Or say a teenager doesn't feel loved,I might need to clarify to them that “love” is not a tangible feeling, like getting kicked.
5.What does the author stress regarding “designer babies” in paragraph 1
A.The high expectations from their parents.
B.The psychological impact on their families.
C.The intentional cheating from fertility businesses.
D.The moral issues surrounding genetic engineering.
6.What is a common problem for families with “designer babies”?
A.The children often rebel against their parents.
B.The parents are too focused on genetic perfection.
C.The children feel like they are science experiments.
D.The parents are unable to afford to raise their children.
7.What does the underlined word “devastating” in paragraph 3 mean
A.Confusing. B.Doubtful.
C.Challenging. D.Harmful.
8.What is the author's suggestion for parents of “designer babies”?
A.Invest more in genetic research.

Six years ago,I was blessed with a stop-and-smell-the-roses type of child. When I 3 to leave, she'd slowly choose her purse. When I needed to 4 a quick lunch, she'd chat with strangers. My 5 phrase to her was “Hurry up!”
One day, everything changed. At the grocery store,my daughter complained,“You're so slow!” She crossed her arms and sighed (叹气) 6 .Suddenly,I saw in her how I pushed her to hurry all the time, and how my hurried lifestyle was 7 her.
“Sorry,” I whispered,“I'll be more patient.Thank you for 8 me.” She looked surprised, but accepted it.

This year,I received an exciting message from the Science Center: out of nearly 2,000 applicants, only 40 high school students were selected to take part in their famous summer program, and I was one of them!
5 —I was not just a student; I was like a scientist sharing my discoveries with the world.

If gratitude is good for us personally, then can its benefits spill over from parents to their children and families, too That's the question researchers Katherine Nelson-Coffey and John Coffey explored in a recent study.
“Our research suggests that parents can improve their well-being,relationships with their children, and family functioning, not necessarily by engaging in more intense parenting practices or increasing engagement with their children, but by practising simple positive activities—namely, gratitude,” explains Nelson-Coffey and Coffey.
1.What did the research mainly focus on
A.The key to strengthening parents' well-being.
B.What parents should do to boost children's growth.
C.What benefits will be brought about by practising gratitude.
D.The effect of parents' gratitude on family relationships.
2.What were the parents asked to do in the research
A.Practise gratitude.
B.Record their daily family functioning.
C.Treat their children in a positive way.
D.Keep a journal about their well-being.
3.Which of the following will John Coffey probably agree with according to the text
A.Gratitude can help even during a hard parental time.
B.Sharing plays a big role in the parent-child relationship.
C.Children will be more grateful if their parents are grateful.
D.Children tend to develop better if their parents care about them more.
4.What is the purpose of the last paragraph
A.To explore reasons.
B.To inspire action.
C.To express sympathy.
D.To describe a phenomenon.
B
5.What do the underlined words “judicious ploys” in paragraph 2 probably mean
A.Heavy loads.
B.Brilliant ideas.
C.Rare situations.
D.Useful opportunities.
6.What can be learnt about Robert
A.He feels life tiresome.
B.He often makes mistakes.
C.He has adapted to his profession.
D.He has got on well with his parents.
7.What are many parents most interested in
A.Social positions.
B.Substantial income.
C.Temporary benefits.
D.Children's preference.
8.What is the text mainly talking about
A.The moral values in Pakistan.
B.The concerns from parents over their kids.
C.The approaches of making proper decisions.
D.The practice of parents deciding kids' future.
