During the lively Paris Olympics, while the spotlight shone on the athletes, a group of unsung heroes worked
tirelessly behind the scenes — the Olympic volunteers. This year, out of 300,000 applicants, around 45,000 were
chosen as volunteers, with 20 percent coming from nearly 150 countries. These volunteers wore bright green
uniforms (制服) to be easily noticed in the purple venues (场馆). They offered help to viewers and media alike,
making them an important part of the Olympic experience.
On my first day as a reporter, I met a technical problem with my media system account. Thankfully, Chinese
volunteer Guo came to help me out. “I hope to improve my language, communication skills, and problem- solving
methods through this event,” said 24-year-old Guo from Wuhan, Central China’s Hubei Province, who was
studying wireless communication at the Paris Institute of Digital Technology. As a former professional swimmer,
Guo saw this as her chance to take part in the Olympics, though in a different role. Another Chinese volunteer,
Yang, faced challenges in managing her job and volunteer duties. Despite giving up her holidays, she felt great
pride in contributing to the event.
One of my most memorable experiences was meeting with a French volunteer. When I needed help to find the
visitor center, a young man on a scooter (小型摩托车) appeared, like a sort of “Monkey King riding a cloud”, and
offered to take me there. After helping me, he expressed his admiration for the Beijing Olympics and his desire to
visit China again.
Volunteers like them were seen everywhere — from bus stops to competition venues — offering directions
and helping with a smile. When large crowds left the venues after the events, causing overcrowding, some
volunteers sat on high chairs with loudspeakers, providing directions to go outside in both English and French with
a smile. These amazing volunteers, truly show the Olympic spirit, making the event and Paris shine even brighter.
24. Why might the volunteers wear bright green uniforms
A.To show love for athletes. . B. To stand out in the crowd
C. To fit in with the venues. D. To stand for their countries.
25. What do we know about Guo
A. She found it hard to balance her job and volunteer work.
B. She both swam and volunteered in the Paris Olympics.
C. She wasn’t as patient and helpful as the French volunteer.
D. She wanted to improve herself through volunteer work.
26. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text
A. To doubt the organization of the Paris Olympics,
B.To show the meaning of hosting Olympic Games.
C. To praise the service of Paris Olympic volunteers.
D. To provide a detailed schedule of Olympic events.
27. How is the text mainly developed
A. By sharing personal stories and experiences
B. By discussing historical Olympic events.
C. By comparing different views on Olympics.
D. .By listing the benefits of volunteer work.

How long do donkeys (驴 ) live Do they live longer than horses Donkeys can live for quite a number of
years , although there are many things to consider that will enable a donkey to live a long and healthy life. In the
wild, donkeys can live into their mid-teens, while domesticated (驯养) donkeys can live a much longer life. It’s
generally considered that an aged donkey is one that is over 20 years old, but many donkeys live into their 30s, with
some going on into their 40s, or extremely rarely, their fifth decade. This is more the case in donkeys kept as pets
rather than as working donkeys.
Donkeys tend to live longer than horses live, and this comes down to biological reasons and species
differences. As equines (马科动物) age, it becomes more difficult for them to bite their food into pieces and take in
the energy they need to maintain a healthy body weight. For horses, this can be a real problem. However, a
donkey’s digestive (消化的) system is much more efficient, meaning a donkey only requires 50% — 75% of the
food that a horse of a similar size would need. Their ability to get the energy out of their food, will be able to help
them survive on a diet that wouldn’t support a horse of the same size and weight.
Domestic donkeys first came from the African wild donkeys, who lived in the difficult, dry environment of
areas of Northeast Africa. This means they are better suited feeding on bushes (灌木 ) and are better suited
surviving on wild vegetation.
That is one of the reasons why domestication has helped both species, and how specific feed, such as short cut,
enables both species to get the nutrition they need. At international animal welfare charity, The Donkey Sanctuary,
part of their ongoing care as donkeys age is to alter their diet as suitable. The care they get there will hopefully see
them living a healthy, happy life.
28. At what age do donkeys start to be considered old
A. 30. B. 20. C. 40. D. 50.
29. What affects how long a domestic donkey lives according to the text
A. Whether it’s a pet or a working animal.. B. Its food choice.
C. Which country it comes from. D. Its size
30. Why do donkeys live longer than horses
A. Donkeys like eating short- cut plants.
B.Donkeys prefer various kinds of food.
C. Donkeys have better digestive ability.
D. Donkeys have better living conditions.
31. What does the underlined word “alter” in the last paragraph mean
A.Change B. Reduce. C. Doubt. D. . Increase.
D
Climate change is speeding up the frequency and seriousness of extreme(极端的) weather events in places like
the Horn of Africa, where deadly floods and the worst drought hit in decades. Besides, traditional weather
forecast(预报) models in sub- Saharan Africa often aren’t dependable enough to forecast extreme weather events
accurately(准确地) ahead of time, leaving the areas at risk. Based on the facts, accurate and timely forecasts are
important to safeguard lives and livelihoods.
Climate scientists are building artificial intelligence (AI) into the traditional weather forecasting method in
East Africa to improve the accuracy of extreme weather forecasts. By using both physical atmospheric processes in
traditional forecasting and AI, researchers develop a first- of- its- kind new modeling approach to give more
accurate rainfall forecasts.“ We start from the traditional forecasts and add the AI model over it to make up for what
the traditional forecasts have missed, so that the final forecast results can more accurately match the data that has
actually been observed,” explains Shruti Nath, a climate scientist and researcher at the University of Oxford
Department of Physics.
According to Shruti Nath, this model, which only requires a notebook computer to run, without the need for
expensive supercomputers, gives local meteorological (气象的) organizations an affordable way of making more
accurate forecasts in an area where there is a shortage of accurate observational data. The researchers say the
project could change early warning systems in East Africa, making the area get better prepared for the extreme
weather caused by climate change.
Traditionally, many forecasting organizations in Africa had not good computational resources. The project is
supported by an IT company, which provides funding and computational resources. This approach gives them the
ability to use AI to make forecasting at the least computational expense.
The model is currently being rolled out in Kenya and Ethiopia. If successful in East Africa, researchers hope to
use it in other parts of the world facing similar challenges. More countries are trying to spread the technology as
well as build local ownership and trust.
32. What does the author want to stress in the first paragraph
A. The necessity of using the new weather forecast model.
B. The great climate changes caused by human activities.
C. The seriousness of the flood and drought in Africa.
D. Little progress has been made in weather forecasts.
33. How does the new weather forecast model work
A. It uses supercomputers to process data.
B. It needs much less observational data.
C. It combines AI with the traditional method.
D. It depends on AI instead of the former way.
34. What can we say about the new weather forecast model
A. It runs easily. B. . It doesn’t work as wished.
C.It is low- cost D. It is geographically limited.
35. What can be the most suitable title for the text
A. Climate Change and Its Effects on Africa
B. Uncertainty of Weather Forecast with AI
C. The Challenges Faced by Traditional Weather Forecast Model
D. AI Helping Improve Weather Forecast in Sub- Saharan Africa

Kenneth was born and raised in California. The sun, the beaches, and the friends he’d known since
kindergarten were all part of his world. But at the age of 16, everything changed. His parents got new jobs in Ohio,
and the family had to move there. It was a difficult decision, as it meant leaving behind everything Kenneth knew
and loved.
Along with the move came a new school for Kenneth. He felt upset every time he thought about saying
goodbye to his school. He was scared of the change, like the new city, the new school, and the new people he
would meet. He didn’t know if he could fit in or if he would be lonely there.
After a long journey across the country, the family arrived and finally settled in Ohio. When it was time to go
to his new school, Kenneth’s mind was filled with worries. What if the students were unfriendly and even cold
What if he didn’t make any friends
The next morning, Kenneth’s parents drove him to school. His heart was beating in his chest as they pulled up
to the big brick building. He hugged his mom and dad, took a deep breath, and stepped out of the car. With each
step towards the school gate, his anxiety grew. He felt like he was walking into a whole new world.
Kenneth was greeted by a school secretary, who was very friendly. Seeing that Kenneth was nervous and shy,
she decided to show Kenneth around the school yard first. Kenneth was led to the modern computer lab, the science
lab, and the huge gym with a basketball court where Kenneth imagined trying out for the school team. As they
walked around, Kenneth gradually felt the school seemed nice, starting to feel a little better.
Finally, they got to the teaching building and headed for Kenneth’s new classroom, and Kenneth’s heart started
racing again. The school secretary led him to the door and gave Kennet h an encouraging smile.
