Did you realize that every single thing you buy affects our environment And just think about the number of people in the world and the amount of things they’re buying each day! It’s unbelievable.
The developed countries take up only 20% of the earth — yet we use up over 80% of the planet’s natural resources. This has led to a very unfair wealth distribution. We are all consumers, so we’re all part of the problem! But as long as we care enough, we can change things and keep our waste to the minimum So how might we do this
On November 24 you have to do just one thing: buy nothing! I don’t know about you, but when I think about it, I probably do buy things I won’t use. Like a dress that looked good in the store but back home looks completely different!
All the little things build up, so just ask yourself a few questions: Do you really need the product and how often are you likely to use it I always shop around for a good bargain, and I’m so glad I do. Sometimes it’s too easy to buy an expensive item, only to find a cheaper version which is exactly the same later on!
You can find lots more tips and information by visiting the Buy Nothing Day website. And don’t forget to check out and download the posters to advertise the day!
The Buy Nothing Day Santa Parade will definitely catch the public’s eye a month before the big Christmas event! Although I’m not sure how the shoppers will go down with the security guards…
21.The problem in Paragraph 2 refers to (指的是) ________.
A.the pollution B.the population of the USA
C.the unfair wealth distribution D.the waste of natural resources
22.According to Paragraph 3, many of the things the author bought are ________.
A.too expensive B.out of date C.poor-quality D.unnecessary
23.We can infer from the passage that the author ________.
A.is addicted to shopping
B.focuses on little things in life
C.advises us to reduce our waste
D.doesn’t think Buy Nothing Day does good to the stores

What if the computers of tomorrow didn’t depend on metal, but instead grew from the soil beneath our feet This idea is turning into reality in a lab, where researchers at The Ohio State University have found that mushrooms (蘑菇) can be used to create memory units for computing.
These mushroom-based devices act as organic memristors (有机记忆电阻器), short for memory resistors. Unlike traditional resistors, organic memristors have the unique ability to retain information about past electrical states. Even after the power is switched off, their resistance level remains, thus allowing them to function like tiny memory units inside a computer.
Mushrooms contain a network known as mycelium (菌丝体), which can send tiny electrical signals — much like memristors do. To test this, the scientists attached wires to mushrooms and sent electrical currents through them. The results were significant: the mushrooms changed between electrical states up to 5,850 times per second with about 90% accuracy (准确). Although their performance dropped under higher electrical frequencies, stability (稳定性) returned when several mushrooms were linked together — suggesting a kind of collective intelligence, similar to how brain cells function together.
Beyond these exciting results, mushrooms come with major environmental advantages. Traditional resistors rely on rare materials and require high energy consumption. Mushrooms, however, are sustainable (可持续的) and easy to grow. Their mycelium can also be shaped into various structures, making them suitable for wearable devices and other new technologies.
“Everything needed to explore organic computing is achievable with the resources we already have,” said John LaRocco, the study’s lead author. In the near future, the computers on our desks may very well have taken root in the forest.
24.What does the underlined word “retain” in paragraph 2 mean
A.Track. B.Store.
C.Transport. D.Analyze.
25.Why does the author mention brain cells in paragraph 3
A.To show the complex structure of mushrooms.
B.To prove the rapid electrical response of mycelium.
C.To stress the cooperative nature of mycelium networks.
D.To highlight the unstable performance of mushroom devices.
26.What do we know about mushroom-based memristors according to paragraph 4
A.They are rare and special.
B.They are smart and powerful.
C.They are tiny and energy-saving.
D.They are sustainable and adaptable.
27.What did John LaRocco say about organic computing
A.It is achievable with existing resources.
B.It requires us to find more organic plants.
C.It faces many technical difficulties.
D.It will advance forest research.

In the pre-digital era, forgetting was the default. To preserve a memory, one had to take a photograph, write in a diary, or consciously commit an event to mind. Today, the situation is reversed: remembering is the default. Every digital footprint — from social media posts to location data — is stored indefinitely in the vast “cloud.” While this total recall offers convenience, it also threatens a fundamental human capacity: the ability to move on from our past.
Viktor Mayer-Sch nberger, in his book Delete, argues that human forgetting serves a critical biological and social purpose. It allows us to filter out irrelevant information and, more importantly, to evolve beyond our past mistakes. When our every youthful error is preserved forever in a searchable digital record, we risk being “frozen” in time, judged by who we were rather than who we have become. This “digital permanence” can discourage individuals from taking risks or expressing unconventional ideas for fear of future consequences.
Furthermore, the constant presence of our past can distort our present. Psychological research suggests that the act of outsourcing our memory to devices — a phenomenon known as “cognitive offloading” — may actually weaken our internal recall. When we know a piece of information is saved online, our brains are less likely to process it deeply. We become masters of finding information, but slaves to the tools that store it.
Restoring the balance requires a conscious effort to reintroduce “forgetting” into our digital systems. This could mean “expiration dates” for certain types of data or privacy laws that grant individuals the “right to be forgotten.” Technology should serve as a tool for human flourishing, not a digital cage that keeps us trapped in an unchangeable past.
28.What does the author mean by “remembering is the default” in Paragraph 1
A.People are now born with better memories. B.Digital information is automatically saved.
C.Most people prefer to keep their diaries online. D.Forgetting has become an impossible biological task.
29.According to Mayer-Sch nberger, what is a negative effect of “digital permanence”
A.It forces individuals to repeat their past mistakes.
B.It makes irrelevant information harder to process.
C.It may prevent people from growing and changing.
D.It helps people learn more quickly from their errors.
30.What does the “cognitive offloading” mentioned in Paragraph 3 result in
A.A deeper understanding of digital tools.
B.An increase in our brain’s storage capacity.
C.A better balance between work and personal life.
D.A decline in our ability to remember things internally.
31.What is the author’s main message in the text
A.Digital storage should be expanded for future generations.
B.Privacy laws are the only way to protect our digital footprints.
C.We should appreciate the convenience brought by the “cloud.”
D.Human development requires a healthy balance between remembering and forgetting.

Gutiérrez’s life would never be the same again after finding a copy of Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy in the rubbish 20 years ago. It happened while he was driving his rubbish truck through wealthier neighbourhoods at night and seeing thrown-away books. It inspired his wish to start rescuing books from the rubbish. He used to take home between 50 and 60 books every morning. Finally, he turned his book collection into a community library for children from poor families.
Colombia’s capital city of Bogota has 19 public libraries. However, these libraries tend to be far away from where poorer communities live. The choice of buying new books is non-existent for families struggling to make ends meet. Gutiérrez’s community library is a true representation of how one man’s rubbish can be another’s treasure.
Gutiérrez grew up poor, and his family could not afford to educate him after primary school. However, his mother was a book lover and read stories to him every night. Her love for books left a deep impression on Gutiérrez.
Today, his makeshift community library, called “The Strength of Words”, takes up most of his home in southern Bogota, and is piled (堆叠) from the floor to the top with fiction (小说) and non-fiction titles. Everything from school textbooks to storybooks can be found in his collection of more than 20,000 books! As word began to spread about his amazing project, people began sending him more books.
Despite having done so much for his community, Gutiérrez is not yet content to call it a day. He continues to search through rubbish cans for reading materials (材料). Today, the Gutiérrez family does not just want to start libraries in neighbourhoods. They want to create spaces for school children to spend their time reading.
Gutiérrez journey to give back to his local community is an amazing example of how every one of us can improve the lives of those around us. How might we take a leaf out of Gutiérrez’s books and impact the less lucky around us
32.What drove Gutiérrez to rescue unwanted books
A.Children’s living conditions. B.Leo Tolstoy’s life.
C.A community library. D.The unwanted Anna Karenina.
33.Why did Gutiérrez start “The Strength of Words”
A.To improve the community life. B.To encourage children’s reading.
C.To create a harmonious neighborhood. D.To give his mother enough books.
34.What can best describe Gutiérrez
A.Smart and generous. B.Calm and talented.
C.Creative and caring. D.Shy and well-educated.
35.What would be the best title for the text
A.From Rubbish to Treasure B.Wish for Reading
C.Gutiérrez’s Kindness D.An Amazing Model of Education

Alice Tolbert, a crossing guard who helped generations of students safely cross the street at Ruth Acty Elementary for nearly two decades, retired last month.
Alice Tolbert moved to Berkeley as a senior in high school from Alabama. She credited a dream for landing her the crossing guard position. 36 To her surprise, a job opening was posted at the city hall, and she was hired.
Miss Alice guarded the crossroads, five days a week, rain or shine. 37 On a typical morning, Miss Alice would arrive at Ruth Acty. “How you doing, baby ” was her most common question for kids crossing the street. If they asked her the same in return, she’d reply, “I’m good!” 38 She was on a mission to teach children the importance of being present in life. “Life is to be lived, and if you learn to listen and watch, you get better, you do well in life, but you gotta learn from somebody who’s got the experience,” she told the kids.
39 “She’ll always high-five me in the morning when I walk to school, and always say hello, and she always has a smile on her face,” said third grader Penelope. “She is a great favorite of the school’s students,” said a teacher from Ruth Acty.
On her last day on duty, more than four dozen parents and kids, including middle and high schoolers she hadn’t helped cross for years, brought balloons and hand-printed signs to cheer her on. “ 40 ” read one sign. “Honk (鸣笛) if you love Miss Alice,” read another, and many drivers did.

Amina, a 16-year-old refugee from Syria, lived in a small tent in a camp in Greece. She had lost her parents during the war and now took care of her younger brother, Sami, who was only six. Every morning, she walked two miles to a makeshift school run by volunteers.
One day, the teacher announced a drawing competition. The winner would receive a brand-new set of colored pencils — something Amina had dreamed of for Sami, who loved to draw but only had a broken crayon.
Amina worked hard on her drawing, a picture of the sea under a starry sky — the view she remembered from her home in Damascus. When she finished, she looked at it proudly.
However, on the day of the competition, as she reached for her drawing, she found it ruined. Water had leaked into her bag overnight, turning the paper into a wet, blurry mess.
Tears welled up in her eyes. She wanted to give up. But then she saw Sami sitting nearby, drawing circles with his worn crayon on a piece of cardboard.

M: Don’t be so negative. Do you have any ideas on how to begin
W: Well, I think doing research on the Internet first is a good choice. There’s a lot of information about air pollution and ways to solve it on the Internet.

M: I think the most difficult thing is that there is a lot of difference in different companies. I mean, the situation is quite different. It is a big challenge because in different situations you need to use different methods to handle data and figures. Yet you need a lot of experience.
W: And what do you think you’ll do when your course finishes
M: I want to get a job at a big company, because to become an accountant, experience is much more important than a degree.

Traditional Chinese clothing has a long history and still influences our lives today. Hanfu is the traditional costume of the Han people. Its history can date back to more than 4,000 years ago. The clothes made of silk by Leizu, the wife of the Yellow Emperor, are considered to be the earliest examples of hanfu. It was then improved over several dynasties. By the Han Dynasty, hanfu finally became the national costume of the country.
The qipao developed from the robe that was worn by Manchu women during the Qing Dynasty. It would later go on to develop into different styles in Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong. Beijing-style qipaos have brighter colours and more decorations. Shanghai style qipaos are influenced by Western fashion in their designs. And qipaos in Hong Kong have shorter sleeves and simpler decorations.
The Tang suit was developed from the horse coat of Manchu men from the Qing Dynasty. Traditional Tang suits usually have Chinese characters on them to express good luck, such as “fu” and “shou”. Nowadays, people usually wear this costume during special festivals and important events.

根据第二段中“The developed countries take up only 20% of the earth — yet we use up over 80% of the planet’s natural resources. This has led to a very unfair wealth distribution. We are all consumers, so we’re all part of the problem! (发达国家只占地球面积的20%,却消耗了地球80%以上的自然资源。这导致了财富分配极不公平。我们都是消费者,所以我们都是问题的一部分!)”可知,第二段中提到的问题指的是不公平的财富分配。
22.推理判断题。根据第三段中“I don’t know about you, but when I think about it, I probably do buy things I won’t use. Like a dress that looked good in the store but back home looks completely different! (我不知道你怎么想,但当我仔细想想时,我可能确实买了一些我不会用的东西。比如一件在商店里看起来不错,但拿回家后看起来完全不一样的裙子!)”可知,作者会买一些自己不会用的东西,比如一件拿回家后就不想穿的裙子,由此可推测,作者买的许多东西都是不必要的。
23.推理判断题。根据第二段中“But as long as we care enough, we can change things and keep our waste to the minimum (最低限度). (但只要我们足够关心,我们就能改变现状,把浪费降到最低。)”以及下文提到的“Buy Nothing Day”可知,作者建议我们要减少浪费。

25.推理判断题。根据第三段中“stability (稳定性) returned when several mushrooms were linked together — suggesting a kind of collective intelligence, similar to how brain cells function together(当几个蘑菇连接在一起时,稳定性会恢复——这表明了一种集体智能,类似于脑细胞协同工作的方式)”可知,作者提到脑细胞是为了强调菌丝网络的协作特性。
根据第四段中“Mushrooms, however, are sustainable (可持续的) and easy to grow. Their mycelium can also be shaped into various structures, making them suitable for wearable devices and other new technologies.(然而,蘑菇是可持续的且易于种植。它们的菌丝体还可以被塑造成各种结构,使其适用于可穿戴设备和其他新技术)”可知,蘑菇基记忆电阻器是可持续的且适应性强的。
27.细节理解题。根据最后一段中“Everything needed to explore organic computing is achievable with the resources we already have,” said John LaRocco, the study’s lead author.(该研究的第一作者John LaRocco表示:“探索有机计算所需的一切条件,凭借现有资源均可实现。”)”

根据第一段中“In the pre-digital era, forgetting was the default. To preserve a memory, one had to take a photograph, write in a diary, or consciously commit an event to mind. Today, the situation is reversed: remembering is the default. Every digital footprint — from social media posts to location data — is stored indefinitely in the vast “cloud.”(在前数字时代,遗忘是常态。为了保存记忆,人们不得不拍照、写日记,或者有意识地把一件事记在脑子里。如今,情况截然相反:记忆是常态。每一个数字足迹——从社交媒体帖子到位置数据——都会被无限期地存储在浩瀚的“云端”)”可知,作者说与前数字时代的“遗忘是常态”相对比,数字时代“记忆是常态”,意思是数字时代各类数字信息会被自动保存在“云端”。
29.推理判断题。根据第二段中“Viktor Mayer-Sch nberger, in his book Delete, argues that human forgetting serves a critical biological and social purpose. It allows us to filter out irrelevant information and, more importantly, to evolve beyond our past mistakes. When our every youthful error is preserved forever in a searchable digital record, we risk being “frozen” in time, judged by who we were rather than who we have become.(Viktor Mayer-Sch nberger在他的书《删除》中认为,人类的遗忘服务于重要的生物学和社会目的。它允许我们过滤掉不相关的信息,更重要的是,超越我们过去的错误。当我们年少时所有的错误都被永久保存在可检索的数字记录中时,我们会有被“困在”过去的风险,人们会用过去的我们来评判我们,而非现在的我们)”可知,Mayer-Sch nberger认为数字永久存储的负面影响是,它可能会把人们“困在”过去,进而阻碍人们成长和改变。
30.细节理解题。根据第三段中“Psychological research suggests that the act of outsourcing our memory to devices — a phenomenon known as “cognitive offloading” — may actually weaken our internal recall.(心理学研究表明,把记忆交给电子设备的行为——这种现象被称为“认知卸载”——实际上可能会削弱我们内在的记忆能力)”可知,认知卸载会导致自身内在记忆能力下降。
通读全文,根据第一段中“While this total recall offers convenience, it also threatens a fundamental human capacity: the ability to move on from our past.(尽管这种完全记忆提供了便利,但它也威胁到了人类一项基本能力:放下过去的能力)”和最后一段中“Restoring the balance requires a conscious effort to reintroduce “forgetting” into our digital systems.(恢复这种平衡需要有意识地将“遗忘”重新引入我们的数字系统)”可知,作者想要传达的核心观点是人类发展需要在记忆和遗忘之间找到健康的平衡。

根据第一段中的“Finally, he turned his book collection into a community library for children from poor families.(最终,他把自己的藏书变成了一个社区图书馆,供低收入家庭的孩子们使用)”、第四段中的“Today, his makeshift community library, called “The Strength of Words”, takes up most of his home in southern Bogota, and is piled (堆叠) from the floor to the top with fiction (小说) and non-fiction titles. Everything from school textbooks to storybooks can be found in his collection of more than 20,000 books!
根据第一段中的“He used to take home between 50 and 60 books every morning. Finally, he turned his book collection into a community library for children from poor families.(他过去常常每天早上把50到60本书带回家。最终,他把自己收藏的书变成了一个面向低收入家庭孩子的社区图书馆)”和第五段“Despite having done so much for his community, Gutiérrez is not yet content to call it a day. He continues to search through rubbish cans for reading materials (材料). Today, the Gutiérrez family does not just want to start libraries in neighbourhoods. They want to create spaces for school children to spend their time reading.(尽管为他的社区做了这么多,Gutiérrez还不满足于结束一天的工作。

39.下文““She’ll always high-five me in the morning when I walk to school, and always say hello, and she always has a smile on her face,” said third grader Penelope. “She is a great favorite of the school’s students,” said a teacher from Ruth Acty.(三年级学生佩内洛普说:“早上我步行去学校时,她总是和我击掌,总是打招呼,脸上总是挂着微笑。”Ruth Acty的一位老师说:“她是学校学生最喜欢的人。”)”说明Ruth Acty社区的人都很喜欢爱丽丝小姐,都很珍视她的温暖。空处位于段首,总领这部分内容。所以F项“Ruth Acty社区的人都很珍视她的温暖。”符合语境。
40.上文“On her last day on duty, more than four dozen parents and kids, including middle and high schoolers she hadn’t helped cross for years, brought balloons and hand-printed signs to cheer her on.(在她值班的最后一天,40多位家长和孩子,包括她多年来没有帮助过马路的中学生和高中生,带着气球和手写的标语来为她加油)”说明很多人来为爱丽丝小姐加油。

Recently I’ve noticed a worrying phenomenon on our campus. During breaks or self-study hours, some students are talking loudly, chasing or playing in corridors or classrooms. What’s worse, some even turn on music at full volume, which greatly disturbs those who are reviewing lessons or taking a rest.
A peaceful environment is essential for efficient learning. It also shows our respect for others. Let’s lower our voices, choose quiet activities during breaks, and remind peers to behave politely. Small acts of consideration will make our campus a better place for everyone to study and grow.

Suddenly, an idea struck her. She picked up her ruined drawing and looked at the blurred colors. Instead of throwing it away, she decided to turn the damage into something new. Using her fingers, she gently spread the wet colors across the paper, creating a dreamy, abstract painting. She added outlines of the sea and stars with a stick dipped in mud. When she finished, the picture looked even more beautiful — like a memory fading but still shining. She handed it in with a nervous heart.
When her name was announced as the winner, Amina could hardly believe her ears. She walked to the front, her hands shaking. The volunteer teacher handed her the box of colored pencils, saying, “Your picture shows that even broken things can become art.” Amina hugged the box tightly and ran to Sami. She knelt beside him and placed the pencils in his small hands. “For you,” she whispered. Sami’s eyes grew wide, and he smiled for the first time in weeks. That evening, they drew together under a real starry sky — just like the one in her painting.
