I’ve often heard parents describing exam season as going into a war, or an incredibly harsh winter, for the entire family. Not just the person taking the GCSEs or A-levels, but the whole lot of you have to start having early nights, gird your loins (准备就绪), and get used to mood swings and anxiety attacks. It’s sort of true. However, it also depends quite a lot on the personality of the exam-taker. Some of them want to be tested on the groyne (防波堤) height of a beach in Hastings and practise talking about the climate crisis in French; others want you to butt out completely, allowing them to focus on their revision undisturbed. Both approaches seem pretty reasonable to me.
I’d forgotten one thing — the terrible guilt. Maybe it’s because the Easter holidays weren’t sunny last year, or maybe it’s because the youngest is my favourite (I am joking), but the guilt is just awful. It’s like having a little Cinderella in the house, except I’m not the audience — I’m the evil stepmother. Fancy going to the beach, or to a party What about a lovely lie-in, and then some re-runs of The Office What about a ball — you know there are some great balls on Everyone can do exactly as they wish, except the Cinderellas upstairs, who’s trying to memorise the whole of Great Expectations, while the rest of us — even the people who did the same text last year — sit around going: “Is that the one about the orphanage and the porridge ”
We can’t even do positive visualisations of the summer, when it’ll all be over, as that just reminds the poor rag-dressed creature of the time period between now and then. Really, the only way to offset (抵消) this guilt would be to memorise Great Expectations myself. But I don’t want to. The sun’s out.
24.What do parents compare exam season to
A.A joyful celebration. B.A difficult time.
C.A fierce competition. D.A tough mission.
25.What does the underlined phrase “butt out” in Paragraph 1 mean
A.Leave them alone. B.Put up with them.
C.Give them a hand. D.Talk with them openly.
26.Why does the author feel guilty
A.She forgets something terribly important.
B.She fails to provide effective motivation for the child.
C.She regrets missing out on quality time with the child.
D.She is troubled by the family’s ease and the child’s hard work.
27.What is the main idea of the passage
A.Different mindsets for A-level exam preparations.
B.Approaches to dealing with exam stress effectively.
C.The importance of family support during exams.
D.The mixed feelings of families during exam season.

The Arctic, Earth’s northern freezer, is warming nearly four times faster than the global average. One of the clearest signs of this rapid change is the shrinking blanket of sea ice that floats on the Arctic Ocean. Since satellites started watching in 1979, summer sea-ice area has dropped by about forty percent, an area roughly six-times the size of California.
Sea ice is different from land-based ice sheets. It forms when seawater freezes, creating thin plates that can be only a few metres thick. Because ice is lighter than water, it floats and moves with wind and currents, covering the ocean like a bright white cap. That cap performs a vital job: it reflects most of the Sun’s energy back to space, keeping the planet cool. Scientists call this effect “albedo”. When warming temperatures melt the ice, darker ocean water is exposed. Dark surfaces absorb more heat, leading to even more melting — a vicious cycle known as ice-albedo feedback.
Melting sea ice does not directly raise sea level, just as melting ice cubes in a glass do not make the glass overflow. However, the loss of ice weakens entire ecosystems. Polar bears rely on sturdy ice to hunt seals; walruses (海象) rest on ice pieces between feeding dives on the shallow ocean floor. As ice breaks into smaller pieces, these animals must swim longer distances, burning precious energy and sometimes drowning.
On human communities, the changes are mixed. Melting ice opens new shipping routes, cutting travel time between Europe and Asia, but it also threatens the traditions of Indigenous (原住民的) peoples who depend on stable ice for hunting and travel. Moreover, extra heat in the Arctic can disturb weather patterns far away, possibly making winters colder in some regions by shifting the polar jet stream.
Researchers use computer models, underwater robots, and even sensors attached to seals to predict future ice conditions. Their work suggests the Arctic could experience practically ice free summers by the 2050s if greenhouse-gas emissions continue to rise. Cutting carbon pollution, monitoring wildlife, and protecting Indigenous knowledge are therefore urgent steps toward slowing the melting.
28.Why is the ice-albedo feedback described as “vicious”
A.This process helps animals survive.
B.The cycle speeds up further melting.
C.The feedback lowers sea level quickly.
D.It creates new ice sheets over vast areas.
29.What does the author imply about melting sea ice
A.Swimming distance for animals is reduced.
B.New food sources are created for animals.
C.The global sea level is raised directly.
D.Animals’ energy waste is increased.
30.How does melting sea ice affect human communities
A.It has both positive and negative effects.
B.It may lead to colder winters in all regions.
C.It mainly brings economic benefits to humans.
D.It destroys the traditional lifestyle of Indigenous peoples.
31.What can be concluded from the researchers’ prediction
A.Emissions have little effect on Arctic ice.
B.Ice-free summers will come by the 2050s.
C.Robots are the best tool for ice prediction.
D.Cutting carbon can help slow Arctic ice loss.
D
You’re embarrassed and then there it is: a flush, sudden reddening of the face, up your neck and across your cheeks. The more you think about it, the hotter and redder you get. If someone asks “are you blushing (脸红)”, it only makes you blush more. So, why do we do it When we’re already self-conscious, this involuntary response can feel like an added punishment. But the scientists suggest blushing may actually have social advantages.
Blushing is our body’s visible reaction when we feel emotions such as embarrassment or self-consciousness. It’s caused by increased blood flow to the skin of the face. When an emotion causes blushing, the sympathetic nervous system — which controls automatic body function — releases adrenaline In the body, adrenaline tightens blood vessels (血管), but in the face, it does the opposite — they dilate. This means more blood flows to the skin and makes the face feel hot.
People blush when they are feeling self-conscious, which is brought on by unwanted social attention. So even though the “fight-or-flight” system is involved, blushing isn’t about preparing for danger. Instead, scientists think it became a social signal, a way of showing others that we recognize a mistake or feel embarrassed. This can actually help build trust, because people often see blushing as a sign of honesty — especially as it’s involuntary. Blushing can signal a non-verbal apology for a social misstep, which can help maintain social bonds after a mistake.
Because blushing is an involuntary reaction, you can’t stop a blush once it’s coming on. However, if you have a blush that lasts more than a few days, is accompanied by pain, or makes you feel painful, talk to your health professional. But for most people, blushing won’t require medical intervention. If you can get through the embarrassment, this involuntary response can be a chance to reflect on your body’s signals, and what they reveal about you and how you connect with the world.
32.What function does the first paragraph serve
A.To show a feature of blushing. B.To explain the causes of blushing.
C.To lead in the topic of the text. D.To describe a personal scene of blushing.
33.What does the underlined word “dilate” in paragraph 2 mean
A.Expand. B.Weaken. C.Bend. D.Leak.
34.What can be inferred about the “fight-or-flight” system from the text
A.It is unrelated to the blushing process. B.It is active during the blushing response.
C.It is responsible for a different role. D.It is crucial for building trust by blushing.
35.What is the author’s suggested attitude toward normal blushing
A.Treating it as a common medical issue. B.Viewing it as a source of self-awareness.
C.Regarding it as a controllable weakness. D.Approaching it as a social embarrassment.
Struggling with sleep anxiety Here are some ways to fix it.Wake up at the same time every day
Research has shown that a consistent wake-up time trains your body’s internal clock — or circadian rhythm — to know when to feel sleepy. A sleep scientist compares this to a “sleep balloon”: It’s empty when you wake up and slowly fills throughout the day. 36 . Sticking to the same wake-up time, even on weekends, keeps this system running smoothly.Schedule a “worry time” during the day
Instead of letting anxieties come flooding in your mind at night, set aside 10-15 minutes earlier on to actively think through your concerns. Write them down if it helps. That way, when your mind starts racing at 2 am, you can tell yourself, “I already did my worrying for the day.” 37 .Replace a fixed bedtime with a calming wind-down (放松) routine
38 . Instead, pick a time to shift from day mode to night mode. Choose a specific time to begin winding down. 39 . The simple routine tells your body it’s time to rest, without the pressure of “I need to sleep now”. And when the pressure’s gone, sleep often comes more easily. 40
Those devices can provide useful insight into your sleep patterns, but they can also lead to orthosomnia — insomnia fueled by the pressure to achieve perfect sleep data. Ask yourself: Is this information supporting better habits, or is it adding to your anxiety If you’re waking up feeling more refreshed, take that as a win. But if you’re stressed by the numbers, it might be time to unplug (拔掉……
A.Use sleep trackers carefully
B.Once it’s full, you’re ready for sleep
C.Adjust your expectations accordingly
D.Then, give yourself permission to let it go
E.Reshaping your sleep habits is only half the battle
F.This might mean shutting off screens and lowering the lights
G.Don’t push yourself to fall asleep at a set hour when you’re not yet tired
The sudden death of Zhang Xuefeng has pushed him into the centre of public debate. For many Chinese students and parents, he was not merely an internet educator. He was also a powerful symbol of a highly 41 age, in which college majors were judged mainly by salary, stability, and the chance of entering the civil service.
This is why the debate around him should not end with 42 alone. The real question is whether choosing a university major must be as utilitarian (pursuing investment pay-offs) as he often suggested. Zhang became famous partly because he spoke in a direct and practical way. His remarks on journalism and his claim that “liberal arts are all service industries” caused strong 43 , and he later apologized. Yet these remarks also won support from many anxious families, because they seemed to offer clear answers in a(n) 44 world.
To be fair, a practical view of education is not entirely wrong. For many ordinary families, especially those without much social capital, a college major is not a(n) 45 choice. It is closely connected with future income, employment pressure, and class mobility. In such cases, it is 46 that parents care about whether a subject can lead to a stable job. A poor family may simply not have the luxury to treat higher education as a(n) 47 adventure. In this sense, Zhang did meet a real social need: he turned hidden information into public advice, and he gave many families a sense of direction when they felt lost.
48 , practicality should not become the only standard. The problem with extreme utilitarianism is that it reduces knowledge to a mere tool and turns students into machines designed for the 49 market. A major is then valued only by one question: “Will it help me get a job quickly ” But society changes too fast for such calculations to remain 50 . Today’s “safe” major may be overcrowded tomorrow; today’s “useless” field may become newly 51 in a different economic or cultural climate. If everyone rushes toward the same options, the result may be not security, but another form of competition and disappointment.
More importantly, education should do more than produce 52 . Literature, history, philosophy, journalism, and other humanities subjects may not always lead directly to high salaries, but they help people understand society, language, memory, justice, and the meaning of human life. Without such training, a person may become efficient, yet remain intellectually 53 . A society that laughs at all “useless” knowledge may lose the ability to reflect on itself.
Therefore, college-major selection should be practical, but not blindly utilitarian. Students must consider jobs and reality, yet they should also consider interest, ability, and the deeper value of knowledge. Zhang Xuefeng’s popularity showed the anxiety of the age; his death now reminds us of something else: life is short, and education should not be reduced to nothing more than a race for 54 return. Between dream and survival, what young people need is not one extreme or the other, but a wiser 55 .

In Guiyang, the capital of southwest China’s Guizhou Province, a dedicated bus route is helping bridge the gap between rural farmers and urban consumers.
Launched in June 2024, the No. 252 special bus 56 (depart) from Xiaba Township in the early hours each morning, carrying dozens of elderly farmers and their baskets of 57 (fresh) picked vegetables to urban markets; Unlike regular routes, the streamlined 58 (serve) stops at just four stations, cutting a two-hour journey to around 40 minutes.
“The fare is quite 59 (reason): 5 yuan with one basket, 7 yuan with two,” said Sun Derong, a 55-year-old farmer 60 relies on the bus every day. Guiyang currently operates around 40 such specialized routes. Some provide first-time bus access 61 villages beyond the regular network, while others, such as one nicknamed the “Little Yellow Hat” line, help transport rural migrant workers to their workplaces.
Zhou Kaimin deputy general manager of Guiyang Public Transportation Company, said the company plans 62 (introduce) 10 additional special routes in 2026. It will expand the focus from supporting farmers to 63 (meet) a broader range of livelihood needs across the city. As China prioritizes the equalization of basic public transportation under its 15th Five-Year Plan, Guiyang’s farmer-friendly bus lines offer 64 comprehensive glimpse of grassroots progress. “Can we please host Thanksgiving dinner ” my eleven-year-old daughter asked, her eyes lighting up with hopeful anticipation. I fought the urge to burst out, “Not if I can help it.” Hosting twenty people meant endless cooking, cleaning, and stress — while spending the holiday at my sister’s house promised a relaxed day with no responsibilities. But her sincere look made a flat “no” impossible. “Maybe,” I replied, my way of avoiding her nonstop, lawyer-like debates that always turned “maybe” into “yes”.
“YES!” she screamed, waving her hands as if she’d just gotten really lucky. “Why are you celebrating It’s just a ‘maybe’,” I smiled. “Because ‘maybe’ from you always becomes ‘yes’,” she said with unshakable confidence. She had me there — her determination had worn me down more times than I could count.
Over the next week, I made a mental list of reasons to visit my sister: no grocery runs, no deep cleaning, no slaving over a hot stove. Then something unexpected happened — I won a turkey at the YMCA contest. I joked that my daughter must have arranged it on purpose, but her excited “YES!” when I told her confirmed her certainty: we were hosting. “Why do you want this so badly ” I asked. “I want to decorate, bake, and have everyone here together,” she said simply.
Her excitement was incredibly uplifting, but I decided to test her resolve. “Okay, but you’re in charge of grocery shopping, cleaning, and helping with every step,” I said. Again came that overjoyed “YES!” and wave of her hands. I smiled, thinking she had no idea what she was signing up for. But I was wrong.
That night, I found her planning in a notebook: decorations, a grocery list, and a cooking timeline. “I got Grandma’s pie recipe and Mrs. Carter’s turkey tips,” she said, holding up a printout. Her commitment surprised me.
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
Throughout every step of the Thanksgiving preparations, my daughter threw herself into the work.

Welcome to Radio Western. We’ll look into the postbag for your opinions on our show, and later, we’ll speak to a surprise guest. First, I must say a big “thank you” to Tony. He did a great job of covering the show last week while I was away. Thanks, Tony. Now, let’s move on to the first letter. It’s from Sally. She writes, “We’re looking forward to hearing more about the musical types you cover.”In fact, we have a new classical music show coming soon and the return of Chris with his show on folk music. Hopefully, this will put your mind at rest, Sally. Another letter is from John. He points out that many of our guests on the show seem to run out of time before they have the chance to finish the interview. “Why don’t you offer some kind of after-show online channel where the guests can continue answering listeners’questions ” he says. John, we’ll pass this one on to management. OK, today we have a surprise guest — Sarah. She will share her journey in music. Let’s welcome Sarah.

根据原文第一段 “I’ve often heard parents describing exam season as going into a war, or an incredibly harsh winter, for the entire family.(我经常听到家长把考试季比作一场战争,或是对全家人而言一个无比难熬的寒冬。)”
根据原文第一段“others want you to butt out completely, allowing them to focus on their revision undisturbed.(另一些人则希望你完全butt out,让他们不受干扰地专心复习。)”
根据原文第二段“Everyone can do exactly as they wish, except the Cinderellas upstairs, who’s trying to memorise the whole of Great Expectations, while the rest of us — even the people who did the same text last year — sit around going: “Is that the one about the orphanage and the porridge ”(所有人都可以随心所欲、自在生活,唯独楼上那位像灰姑娘一样苦熬备考的孩子,正努力背诵整部《远大前程》;而我们其余人 —— 哪怕有人去年也学过这篇名著 —— 却悠闲闲坐,随口聊着:“是不是那本讲孤儿院和粥的书?”)”
根据原文第一段 “I’ve often heard parents describing exam season as going into a war, or an incredibly harsh winter, for the entire family.(我经常听到家长把考试季比作一场战争,或是对全家人而言一个无比难熬的寒冬。)”

根据第二段“When warming temperatures melt the ice, darker ocean water is exposed. Dark surfaces absorb more heat, leading to even more melting — a vicious cycle known as ice-albedo feedback.(气温升高使海冰融化,深色的海水显露出来。深色表面会吸收更多热量,进而造成冰层进一步融化,这一恶性循环被称为冰反照率反馈。)”可知,该循环会加速冰层融化,因此被称作恶性循环。
29.推理判断题。根据第三段“As ice breaks into smaller pieces, these animals must swim longer distances, burning precious energy and sometimes drowning.(随着冰层碎裂成小块,这些动物必须游更远的距离,消耗宝贵能量,有时甚至会溺亡。)”
根据第四段“On human communities, the changes are mixed. Melting ice opens new shipping routes, cutting travel time between Europe and Asia, but it also threatens the traditions of Indigenous (原住民的) peoples who depend on stable ice for hunting and travel.(对人类社会而言,影响喜忧参半。冰层融化开辟了新航线,缩短了欧亚之间的航行时间;但同时也威胁到原住民的传统生活 —— 他们依赖稳定冰层进行狩猎和出行。)”可知,海冰融化对人类社会兼具积极和消极影响。
31.推理判断题。根据最后一段“Their work suggests the Arctic could experience practically ice free summers by the 2050s if greenhouse-gas emissions continue to rise. Cutting carbon pollution, monitoring wildlife, and protecting Indigenous knowledge are therefore urgent steps toward slowing the melting.(他们的研究表明,若温室气体排放持续增加,到21世纪50年代,北极夏季或将几乎无冰。因此,减少碳污染、监测野生动物、保护原住民智慧,是减缓冰川融化的紧迫举措。)”可知,减少碳排放有助于减缓北极冰层消融。

【导语】文章主要探讨人们脸红的原因、脸红在社交中的作用以及对正常脸红应持有的态度。
【详解】32.推理判断题。根据第一段“You’re embarrassed and then there it is: a flush, sudden reddening of the face, up your neck and across your cheeks. The more you think about it, the hotter and redder you get. If someone asks “are you blushing (脸红)”, it only makes you blush more. So, why do we do it When we’re already self-conscious, this involuntary response can feel like an added punishment. But the scientists suggest blushing may actually have social advantages.(你感到尴尬,紧接着就出现了:一阵脸红,脸颊、脖子瞬间涨得通红。你越是在意,脸就越烫、越红。如果有人问一句 “你脸红了?”,只会让你红得更厉害。那么,我们为什么会脸红呢?当我们本就局促不安时,这种不由自主的反应仿佛是额外的惩罚。但科学家认为,脸红其实具备社交层面的益处。)”结合下文对脸红的原因、脸红在社交中的作用等的介绍可知,第一段的作用是引入文章主题。
33.词句猜测题。根据第二段“In the body, adrenaline tightens blood vessels (血管), but in the face, it does the opposite — they dilate. (在身体其他部位,肾上腺素会使血管收缩,但在脸部,情况相反——血管dilate。)”可知,此处描述脸部血管与身体其他部位血管因肾上腺素作用产生相反变化,身体其他部位血管收缩,那么脸部血管应是扩张,“dilate”意思可能是“Expand.”(扩张)。
34.推理判断题。根据第三段“People blush when they are feeling self-conscious, which is brought on by unwanted social attention. So even though the “fight-or-flight” system is involved, blushing isn’t about preparing for danger.(当人们感到难为情时会脸红,这是由不必要的社会关注引起的。所以即使涉及“战或逃”系统,脸红也不是为危险做准备)”可知,“战或逃”系统在脸红反应中扮演的角色与应对危险不同。
35.推理判断题。根据最后一段“If you can get through the embarrassment, this involuntary response can be a chance to reflect on your body’s signals, and what they reveal about you and how you connect with the world.(如果你能克服这种尴尬,这种不由自主的生理反应,便可以成为一个契机,让你读懂身体发出的信号,明白这些信号揭示出的自我特质,以及你与外界的相处方式)”可知,作者建议把正常脸红当作一种自我认知的来源。

上文“It’s empty when you wake up and slowly fills throughout the day.(你醒来时气球是空的,随后会在白天慢慢被填满。)” B“Once it’s full, you’re ready for sleep.(气球一充满,你就准备好入睡了。)”
37.上文“Instead of letting anxieties come flooding in your mind at night, set aside 10-15 minutes earlier on to actively think through your concerns. Write them down if it helps. That way, when your mind starts racing at 2 am, you can tell yourself, “I already did my worrying for the day.”(不要任由焦虑情绪在夜晚涌入脑海,不妨白天抽出10到15分钟,主动梳理自己烦心事。有需要的话可以把烦恼写下来。这样一来,即便凌晨两点思绪纷乱,你也可以告诉自己:“我今天已经把烦心事都思虑过了。”)”指出先在白天把担忧梳理完,接着就可以释怀不再多想。选项D“Then, give yourself permission to let it go.(然后,允许自己放下这些烦心事。)”
38.下文“Instead, pick a time to shift from day mode to night mode.(相反,选一个时间从日间状态切换到夜间放松状态。)” G“Don’t push yourself to fall asleep at a set hour when you’re not yet tired.(还不困的时候,别强迫自己在固定时间入睡。)”
39.上文“Choose a specific time to begin winding down.(选定一个时间开始进入放松环节。)” F“This might mean shutting off screens and lowering the lights.(这可以是关掉电子屏幕、调暗灯光。)”
40.下文“Those devices can provide useful insight into your sleep patterns, but they can also lead to orthosomnia — insomnia fueled by the pressure to achieve perfect sleep data. Ask yourself: Is this information supporting better habits, or is it adding to your anxiety If you’re waking up feeling more refreshed, take that as a win. But if you’re stressed by the numbers, it might be time to unplug (拔掉……

plan to do sth.

66.Dear Mr. Smith,
I’m Li Hua, from the Student Union. To celebrate the Campus Art Festival, we have produced an English micro-movie themed on our campus life. It records memorable moments: studying attentively in class, joining in diverse activities, enjoying sports and interacting warmly with friends. We aim to show the vitality and charm of our school.
Nevertheless, we encounter difficulties when recording the voice-over. Our pronunciation and intonation sound unnatural. We also fail to adjust the tone and rhythm to match the scenes perfectly.
Could you please offer us some professional guidance We would be deeply grateful.
Yours sincerely,

67.One possible version:
Throughout every step of the Thanksgiving preparations, my daughter threw herself into the work. On the pre-Thanksgiving grocery run, she moved through the crowded aisles with a sunny smile, crossing items off the list without a complaint. When we cleaned the house from top to bottom, she sang along to music, turning boring tasks into a game. And when we spent hours cooking — peeling potatoes, stuffing the turkey, baking pies — her enthusiasm never faded. Even when she took out the garbage or washed piles of dirty dishes, she did it with enthusiasm that spread to everyone around her.
By the time guests arrived, the house smelled of roasted turkey. My daughter’s decorations — paper turkeys, shining lights, and handwritten place cards — filled the room with warmth. As we sat around the table, I looked at her — tired but smiling broadly, proud of what we’d accomplished together. All my anxiety had disappeared; hosting wasn’t a chore — it was fun, thanks to her. The best part wasn’t the meal or the praise — it was watching her light up, knowing I’d shared something special with her.
