Directions:After reading the passages below, fill in each blank with a proper word given in the box. Each word can be used only once. Note that there is one more word than you need.
A.cover B.landscape C. narrative D.meant AB.celebrated AC. proportion AD.elaborate BC. fake BD.inherited CD.caution ABC. seasonal
Visitors to Shanghai are often advised to admire the skyline, respect the traffic, and prepare for prices that may occasionally hurt their feelings. To this list, the internet has lately added another 31 : do not, under any emotional impulse, raise a cup of Mixue Ice Cream & Tea too close to the Oriental Pearl, lest the 32 tower, acting in its newly-given capacity as an urban defence tower, open fire upon where you stand.
In Shanghai, a wrong ceremonial choice leads to a grave danger. Shanghai is not merely a city but a(n) 33 , examination of taste. One may pass through it safely with a silk scarf, a restrained coffee order, and an expression suggesting that one has never compared prices in public. Mixue, however, enters this 34 like a cheerful Cinderella in a marble ballroom: innocent, inexpensive, and therefore intolerably easy to notice.
How then is one to proceed First, conceal panic. Nothing invites the Pearl’s laser attack faster than guilt. Walk calmly. Hold the cup not like illegal goods, but like 35 family treasure. Should passers-by glance in your direction, look faintly bored, as though your lemon tea were a limited 36 collaboration available only to those with strong emotional discipline.
Second, choose the location wisely. The truly careful do not stand in open plazas beneath the skyline, waving a one-yuan ice-cream. One drinks in side streets, under huge trees, or beside a convenience store where every class of city life has long kept a practical peace. Urban survival, as ever, depends on 37 .
Third, upgrade the 38 . If questioned, never say, “I bought Mixue because it was cheap.” That is the language of vulnerability. Say instead that you are conducting field research into mass-market beverage culture, or testing the resilience of popular brands in presence of the Pearl’s hostility. A serious tone can rescue any beverage.
Lastly, remember that this article is only 39 as a funny joke. The Oriental Pearl has not yet destroyed a single citizen for crimes against boutique consumption. Shanghai remains a city where luxury and bargain, pride and joy, coexist in an uneasy but lively mixture. So drink your Mixue boldly — only not too boldly. Civilisation, after all, depends on 40
III. Reading Comprehension (45’)
Section A(15’)
I picked up my phone to take a picture of the beautiful scenery. And I got a 41 “Cannot take photos: There is not enough available 42 to take a photo.” I panicked and 43 went to see what pictures I could delete. No candidates. So I tried the next best thing: to 44 some apps. But it turned out that all of them were useful.
I was annoyed at myself for not remembering to transfer (转存) my photos the night before. Before I 45 defeat, I missed many breathtaking views that the tour guide was 46 . I would probably never get to see them again, and wasn’t I on this trip to see them I thought back to the conversation I had with my brother before 47 this trip. My brother suggested I just look at pictures and videos of Switzerland and save all the money and troubles. And I thought his idea was 48 . How could photos and videos compare to actually going to Switzerland and 49 it
But wasn’t I planning on taking 50 pictures and then looking at Switzerland through a screen I was 51 myself from having the experience that I had been looking forward to. So a trip without taking pictures was actually a blessing. I was 52 to take mental pictures and to experience Switzerland.
Now, a year later, as I continue to share my travel experiences with my friends, I no longer use pictures. 53 , I use my unique experiences to create an image in their minds that no 54 could ever match.
Slow down and enjoy life. It’s not only the 55 you also miss by going too fast — you also miss the sense of where you are going and why.

Global Green Actions for a Sustainable Future
While global leaders gathered in Geneva last month to discuss ambitious climate targets, a new report from the Global Sustainability Index has cast a shadow over the optimism. The report reveals a widening gap between political rhetoric and the slow pace of actual implementation on the ground. Although investments in green technology are breaking records, the planet’s temperature continues to climb.
According to the data, renewable energy sources like wind and solar are growing faster than ever. In Europe, solar power capacity increased by 25% last year, and electric vehicle sales have doubled. However, the report points out that this growth is dangerously uneven. Developing countries, particularly in Southeast Asia and Africa, often lack the necessary funds and technology to build large-scale green infrastructure. As a result, they continue to rely heavily on coal and oil to fuel their economic growth. “We are seeing a split world,” says Dr. Kenji Tanaka, an economist at the report. “The rich get greener, while the poor are left with the bill.”
Another major challenge highlighted is “greenwashing.” Many large corporations claim to be “carbon neutral” by buying cheap carbon credits from forest conservation projects abroad, rather than reducing emissions from their own factories. Scientists criticize this practice, arguing that it creates an illusion of progress while the planet continues to heat up. “We cannot buy our way out of the climate crisis,” says Dr. Elena Rodriguez, a lead researcher. “Real change requires cutting emissions at the source.” Despite these setbacks, the report highlights successful local initiatives that offer hope. In Kenya, a partnership between the government and local communities has successfully combined wildlife protection with solar power generation, providing both jobs and clean energy. Similarly, Costa Rica’s policy to pay landowners for preserving forests has restored biodiversity and boosted eco-tourism. These examples prove that practical, well-funded actions can work. The report concludes that international cooperation must move beyond empty promises and focus on providing real financial support to ensure a “just transition” for all nations.
59.What is the main purpose of the first paragraph
A.To introduce a new climate agreement signed in Geneva.
B.To highlight the contradiction between promises and reality.
C.To explain why renewable energy is growing so rapidly.
D.To criticize the economic policies of developing countries.
60.What does the underlined word “greenwashing” in Paragraph 3 probably mean
A.Making misleading claims about being environmentally friendly.
B.Investing heavily in new green technologies and innovations.
C.Cleaning up polluted industrial sites and rivers.
D.Planting trees to absorb carbon dioxide from the air.
61.According to Dr. Elena Rodriguez, what is the fundamental solution to the climate crisis
A.Buying more international carbon credits.
B.Shifting entirely to renewable energy sources.
C.Cutting emissions directly at the source.
D.Cooperating with large multinational corporations.
62.Why does the author mention Kenya and Costa Rica in the last paragraph
A.To illustrate the uneven distribution of global wealth.
B.To provide evidence of successful local green actions.
C.To compare different approaches to wildlife protection.
D.To explain why solar power is more popular in Africa.
C
Is a teenage boy more likely to grow up working with children as a teacher or with engines as a mechanic Smart money bets on the latter, and that would still hold true even if you switch up the country or decade throughout the 20th century. But why What are the factors that contribute to this seemingly stereotypical outcome
You might think that social forces — discrimination, gender roles, etc. significantly shape these outcomes, but research shows that men and women’s occupational pursuits and interests have not changed much over the past century, even as societal norms decidedly have. Boys and girls tend to pursue jobs dealing with things and people respectively. And, perhaps counter-intuitively (与直觉相反), this preference for sex-typical jobs tends to increase when their country offers more economic and political empowerment for women — a phenomenon called the “gender-equality paradox (悖论)”.
A recent study noted that with fewer economic worries, greater national wealth might enable more students to pursue jobs to which they are naturally drawn. “Individual students in wealthy nations with strong social safety nets might choose more in accordance with biologically influenced occupational interests than in accordance with political ideals,” the study stated. Social factors may indeed play a role in determining which jobs young men and women are interested in, but biology seems to be a considerable force driving these outcomes. From a policy perspective, that means that interventions designed to bring more women into fields like STEM might need to be readjusted.
From my perspective, it is worth considering whether such interventions are appropriate in the first place. After all, if we want greater national wealth and gender equality, and these two things seem to push people towards sex-typical jobs, then why not let the chips fall where they may Moreover, what might be good for organizations and businesses is not always the same as what is good for individuals.
63.What does the underlined word “stereotypical” in paragraph 1 probably mean
A.Appealing. B.Influential. C.Productive. D.Unchanged.
64.What leads the phenomenon of “gender-equality paradox” to occur
A.Girls’ observing the societal norms all the time.
B.Boys’ constant pursuing careers to do with people.
C.Women’s gaining more economic and political support.
D.Men’s having less access to sex-typical occupations nowadays.
65.What is most likely to determine individuals’ occupational interest
A.Political ideals. B.Biological factors.
C.Social safety nets. D.Readjusted interventions.
66.Which of the following does the author probably agree with
A.Individuals should pursue their favored jobs despite the intervention.
B.Gender equality is having a greater impact on sex-typical occupations.
C.Organizations and businesses have benefited greatly from economic growth.
D.More proper policies should be made to intervene in women’s career options.
Section C(8’)
Directions: Read the passage carefully. Fill in each blank with a proper sentence given in the box. Each sentence can be used only once. Note that there are two more sentences than you need.
Why You Might Need an Adventure
In Moby-Dick, Herman Melville’s narrator Ishmael offers a surprising way to lift spirits: When the “hypos (情绪低落)” struck, he took to the sea and forgot his troubles.
Since whaling was an exhausting and dangerous job, this advice might seem counter-intuitive in today’s era of self-care. 67 If you’re troubled by your own case of the “hypos,” the cure may be a tough challenge.
This idea has been confirmed by emerging research. A 2013 study found that experienced climbers tend to derive unusual spiritual inspiration, experience a greater sense of flow, and feel happier when climbing. A 2023 analysis of research on outdoor adventures showed that participants in these experiences benefit in multiple ways. These included physical and mental balance, personal growth, a sense of belonging, and deep, transformative experiences.
68 Indeed, learning new things with a spirit of curiosity and exploration has been shown to boost mood. This raises an interesting paradox (悖论) that appears in this field of happiness research. People derive a lot more happiness from high-skill activities that require learning than they do from low-skill ones that don’t, yet we typically settle for the latter. The obvious explanation is that the latter takes a lot less learning effort and mental focus. Although the happiness benefits of high-skill activities will probably be greater, they are deferred (延迟的) and seem abstract compared with the instant satisfaction of low-skill ones.
Just as more demanding physical and mental adventures boost happiness, their absence can harm well-being. 69 Those who often report better moods tend to have an “adventure-based mindset” — purposely seeking out new, interesting, and challenging experiences.
If you find yourself a bit down like Ishmael, you don’t necessarily need to risk your life chasing a great white whale around the world. Choose a challenge that is worthwhile and hard. If the knowledge in your head feels outdated or uninspiring, it might be time to explore a new field. For a physical challenge, sign up for a marathon or set out to walk a few hundred miles.
70 And that is the point. If it were safe, it wouldn’t be heroic; if it were predictable, it wouldn’t be an adventure. The object is not to win in a conventional way; it is to wake up and be fully alive.
A.Starting an adventure can bring immediate and big happiness benefits.
B.People can suffer when there aren’t enough external stimuli and new experiences.
C.An adventure need not always be physical — mental challenges can offer similar rewards.
D.There is no guarantee that whatever adventure you choose will turn out the way you hope, of course.
E.Research has provided evidence about why materially comfortable humans would be drawn to difficult, even dangerous tasks.
F.But Melville perhaps knew something we’ve forgotten: When life is getting you down, the answer is not more comfort but less.
V. Summary writing (10’)
I want every high school student to know: You don’t have to be perfect. You don’t have to join in many extracurricular activities or get perfect test scores. What matters is that you work hard, believe in yourself, and let your true self shine. I was once a girl who doubted whether I could ever get into Harvard University, but with hard work and a little faith, I made it. And so can you.
In high school, such a belief felt out of reach to me. Those days were full of self-doubt. I would spend hours watching videos of students online talking about their perfect extracurricular activities — ten clubs, volunteer work abroad, internships at big companies — and compare myself to them. I only had a few after-school activities: attending the book club, tutoring younger students in math, and playing on the girls’ soccer team. My test scores were good, but not perfect. Every time I saw those “perfect” numbers online, I felt like I was falling behind, and I even thought about giving up my dream of going to a top university.
Everything changed the day my teacher, Cathy, pulled me aside. She noticed I was feeling down and asked me what was troubling me. I told her about my doubts, the numbers and activities that made me feel inadequate She smiled and handed me a brochure about Harvard’s admissions process. “Ana,” she said gently, “colleges like Harvard don’t just look at numbers. They look at the whole person — your struggles, your efforts, your growth, and the opportunities you’ve had. You don’t have to be perfect; you just have to be yourself.” Those words hit me like a ray of light. For the first time, I realized that my background, my hard work, and my unique story were not weaknesses — they were part of who I was, and they mattered.

M: Today, I’m going to talk about a tree called the St. Helena gumwood, which is one of the 10 rarest trees on the planet. It is found only in specific areas of St. Helena, an island in the South Atlantic Ocean. The St. Helena gumwood has a very interesting appearance. Its trunk bends and its branches form umbrella-like shapes. It has many leaves, which grow in bunches in the shape of hands. It takes each tree around 30 years to reach its full height of about eight meters. The tree hasn’t always been so rare. Problems began when a trading company first settled there. The island’s newcomers used the trees for fuel, but the goats they brought with them caused even greater damage. They fed on the young trees, stopping them from being able to develop fully. Fortunately, some trees survived. Although other plants were starting to take over the tree’s habitat. Some trees were growing out of the cracks of rock walls. These were the only trees that were not affected, and so the gumwood didn’t disappear from the island completely.

根据Modern Dog部分中“The front-page figures vary from the illustrious Paris Hilton and the whimsical Tinkerbell to the esteemed Virginia Madsen accompanied by her canine companions. (头版人物从著名的帕丽斯·希尔顿和异想天开的小叮当到受人尊敬的弗吉尼亚·马德森,她的狗同伴陪伴。)”可知,Modern Dog有名人访谈,故选D。

【导语】文章主要介绍全球环保行动的现状、现存问题,并列举成功案例,呼吁各国开展务实合作。
【详解】59.推理判断题。根据第一段中的“The report reveals a widening gap between political rhetoric and the slow pace of actual implementation on the ground. Although investments in green technology are breaking records, the planet’s temperature continues to climb.(这份报告揭示出政治言论与实际落地进展缓慢之间的差距正在不断扩大。尽管绿色技术的投资创下新高,但全球气温仍在持续上升。)”可知,首段意在点明环保承诺与现实情况之间存在矛盾。
60.词句猜测题。根据第三段中的“Many large corporations claim to be “carbon neutral” by buying cheap carbon credits from forest conservation projects abroad, rather than reducing emissions from their own factories. Scientists criticize this practice, arguing that it creates an illusion of progress while the planet continues to heat up.(许多大型企业通过从海外森林保护项目购买廉价碳信用额来宣称自己实现“碳中和”,却不从自身工厂减排。科学家对此提出批评,称这种做法制造出进步的假象,而全球变暖仍在持续。)”可知,很多企业并非真正节能减排,只是依靠购买碳额度伪装环保、制造虚假进步,由此可知greenwashing指虚假环保、进行误导性环保宣传的行为。
61.细节理解题。根据第三段中的“We cannot buy our way out of the climate crisis,” says Dr. Elena Rodriguez, a lead researcher. “Real change requires cutting emissions at the source.”(首席研究员埃琳娜·罗德里格斯博士表示:“我们无法靠购买手段摆脱气候危机。真正的改变需要从源头减少排放。”)”可知,在她看来,解决气候危机的根本办法是从源头直接减排。
62.推理判断题。根据最后一段中的“Despite these setbacks, the report highlights successful local initiatives that offer hope. In Kenya, a partnership between the government and local communities has successfully combined wildlife protection with solar power generation, providing both jobs and clean energy. Similarly, Costa Rica’s policy to pay landowners for preserving forests has restored biodiversity and boosted eco-tourism.(尽管存在这些阻碍,这份报告列举了诸多带来希望的地方性成功举措。

根据第一段中“Is a teenage boy more likely to grow up working with children as a teacher or with engines as a mechanic Smart money bets on the latter, and that would still hold true even if you switch up the country or decade throughout the 20th century. But why What are the factors that contribute to this seemingly stereotypical outcome (一个十几岁的男孩长大后,是更可能成为一名与孩子们打交道的老师,还是与引擎打交道的机械师?理性判断会倾向于后者,而且即使你更换国家或回溯到20世纪的不同年代,这一结论依然成立。但这是为什么呢?是什么因素导致了这种看似stereotypical结果?)”可知,这一结论看似一成不变,stereotypical意思是“一成不变的”。
64.细节理解题。根据第二段中“And, perhaps counter-intuitively (与直觉相反), this preference for sex-typical jobs tends to increase when their country offers more economic and political empowerment for women — a phenomenon called the “gender-equality paradox (悖论)”.(或许与直觉相悖,当国家给予女性更多经济和政治权力时,人们对符合性别固有印象的职业偏好会加剧,这一现象被称作“性别平等悖论”。)”
根据第三段中“Social factors may indeed play a role in determining which jobs young men and women are interested in, but biology seems to be a considerable force driving these outcomes.(社会因素确实会影响年轻人的职业兴趣,但生理因素似乎是造成这一结果的重要原因。)”
根据第四段中“After all, if we want greater national wealth and gender equality, and these two things seem to push people towards sex-typical jobs, then why not let the chips fall where they may (毕竟,如果国家富裕和性别平等会让人们选择贴合性别特质的工作,那为何不顺其自然呢?)”

68.根据后文“Indeed, learning new things with a spirit of curiosity and exploration has been shown to boost mood. This raises an interesting paradox (悖论) that appears in this field of happiness research.(事实上,带着好奇与探索的心态学习新事物,已被证实可以改善情绪。这就引出了幸福感研究领域中一个有趣的悖论。)”可知,后文讲述带着好奇心学习新事物可以改善情绪,不只身体冒险,脑力挑战同样有效。C选项“An adventure need not always be physical — mental challenges can offer similar rewards.(冒险不一定总是身体上的,脑力挑战也能带来相似的回报)”,引出下文精神、学习层面的挑战。
69.根据前文“Just as more demanding physical and mental adventures boost happiness, their absence can harm well being.(正如高难度的身心冒险能提升幸福感,缺少它们会损害身心健康)”可知,此处承接缺少冒险带来的负面影响。B选项“People can suffer when there aren’t enough external stimuli and new experiences.(当缺乏足够的外界刺激与新鲜体验时,人们会感到痛苦)”符合语境。
70.根据后文“And that is the point. If it were safe, it wouldn’t be heroic; if it were predictable, it wouldn’t be an adventure.(这正是关键。若安全便算不上英勇,若可预测便不是冒险)”可知,后文强调冒险具有不确定性、不可预测性。D选项“There is no guarantee that whatever adventure you choose will turn out the way you hope, of course.(当然,你选择的冒险未必会如你所愿)”,指出冒险的未知性,引出后文对冒险本质的阐述。

From that day on, I stopped comparing myself to others and focused on doing my best. I threw myself into the activities I loved: leading book club discussions, spending more time tutoring students who needed help, and even organizing a small fundraiser for a local children’s shelter with my soccer team. It wasn’t always easy — there were nights when I stayed up late studying for exams, weekends I spent volunteering instead of hanging out with friends, and moments when I still felt like giving up. But whenever I felt discouraged, I thought of Cathy’s words.
When applying to colleges, I hesitated before adding Harvard. My hands trembled as I clicked “submit” on my application. I told myself that even if I didn’t get in, I was proud of how hard I had worked. Weeks later, when I received the acceptance letter in the mail, I couldn’t believe my eyes. What made it even more amazing was that Harvard offered me a full scholarship through their need-based financial aid programs — all because of the hard work I had put in during high school.
