Vanessa Becker-Hughes remembers when eels (鳗) were plentiful on the Somerset Levels. As a little girl, she would fish for eels. On a good night, she could catch up to 200.
Last summer, Becker-Hughes decided to go fishing for eels for the first time since her childhood, after receiving the necessary permits. She managed to catch (and release) only one. “Relating that back to my childhood experiences, I felt rather out of sorts,” she says.
Determined to help bring this endangered fish back, Becker-Hughes and other residents founded the Somerset Eel Recovery Project (SERP). To successfully restore eels to Somerset’s waterways, Becker-Hughes believes, they also need to be restored in the hearts and minds of the local people.
To this end, they are trying hard to restore the “lost connection” between people and eels. For example, they hold monthly “eel cafes” to record older residents’ oral histories about eels while also inspiring the next generation.
Last year, primary school teacher Hannah Strode set up 59 elver (幼鳗鱼) tanks in various schools. Strode describes the children as “full of excitement” as she carried boxes containing elvers into the classrooms. For several weeks the children fed the elvers and cleaned their tanks, while studying resources Strode had prepared. Strode says both children and elvers benefited, including in one unanticipated way. “For children who struggle with the school environment, having the tank in their classroom helped them feel calmer and learn to take responsibility,” says Strode.
Local artists also contributed their efforts. They created artworks, which were displayed at SERP’s “eel conference”. “Combining science and art is a winner,” believes Becker-Hughes when it comes to raising awareness. She says people often have no idea about the threats facing eels before seeing the prints.
Becker-Hughes is determined to see eels repopulating in Somerset once again. “I really hope that the eel could become a household symbol of our water, like the honey bee is for clean air.”
4. How did Becker-Hughes feel after fishing last summer

C.To rebuild people’s bond with eels. D.To learn about Somerset’s history.
6. What unexpected benefit did the elver tanks bring
A.Improving the school environment.
B.Giving children inspiration for artworks.
C.Boosting children’s academic performance.
D.Helping struggling children adapt to school.
7. What does Beecher-Hughes stress by mentioning the honey bee
A.Eels and bees are equally important to the ecosystem.
B.Eels and bees face similar environmental threats.
C.Eels should gain wide public attention like bees.
D.Eels are encountered as frequently as bees in our daily life.

Getting active is good for your health. But for most people, finding time to exercise can be difficult. The good news is you don’t need that much time to gain the benefits. Research shows taking micro-walks throughout the day can improve your overall health.
There’s no trickery here — the name says it all. “Micro-walks are short intentional walking sessions, typically lasting 5 to 10 minutes, taken multiple times throughout the day,” says Dr. Zulia Frost, co-founder and clinical director of Recharge Health. “Unlike traditional walks that may last 30 minutes to an hour, micro-walks are designed to fit into small pockets of time, often during work breaks or shifts between activities.”
While you may think that such a short period is unlikely to affect your health, research suggests no matter how much walking you fit into your day, the benefits are plenty.
“Micro-walks can reduce tiredness, energize the body, and support weight management,” Frost says. It can boost your mental health as well. “Breaking up long periods of sitting or inactivity can help support cognitive (认知的) function,” Frost adds. A micro-walk can also reduce stress, enhance your ability to focus, and even lift your mood because it releases endorphins (内啡肽).
Frequency is crucial for micro-walks to be effective. Aim for a short walk every hour during your workday or school day to make it part of your daily activities. Frost says the best way to do this is to tie micro-walks to your existing habits. “Pair a micro-walk with activities you already do. For example, take a walk for 5 to 10 minutes after meals, during coffee breaks, or while waiting for your child’s activities to finish,” she says. “This makes walking a natural part of your life without extra planning.” Frost also recommends picking convenient locations for short walks — like around your house, office building, or a nearby park — to make it easy to stay consistent.
8. Who are micro-walks most suitable for
A.Those new to exercise. B.Those with weight issues.
C.Those with busy lifestyles. D.Those living near big parks.
9. What does paragraph 4 imply about micro-walks
A.They require no extra planning. B.They help with both body and mind.
C.They are less challenging physically. D.They work better than traditional walks.
10. What does Frost advise people to do
A.Move fast during micro-walks. B.Add micro-walks to routines.
C.Choose quiet walking spots. D.Keep track of daily steps.
11. What is the best title for the text
A.Micro-Walks: A Simple Path to Health B.Micro-Walks: A Comfortable Lifestyle
C.Micro-Walks: A Special Way to Walk D.Micro-Walks: A Global Trend in Fitness
D
Have you ever felt excitement run through your body as a stadium erupts in cheers, cried while singing along with strangers at a concert, or been swept up in the energy of a celebration There’s a sociological term for this kind of experience: collective effervescence.
“When emotions match up in a group and ordinary moments start to feel extraordinary, a bigger-than-yourself feeling arises. This is when we experience collective effervescence. We become in tune with one another — emotions are intensified, a sense of togetherness emerges, and feelings of membership take shape,” said Shira Gabriel, a psychology professor at the State University of New York.
There’s evidence that having these experiences of collective effervescence brings about all kinds of positive outcomes for us as individuals and for society. Humans are pack animals. We need other people, and we need to feel not just as if we have friends and close relationships but as if we’re embedded in a larger society in order to feel happy and healthy. To that end, Gabriel emphasized that people shouldn’t feel guilty about spending a lot of money on concert tickets or a football match.
Another notable aspect of collective effervescence is the way it leaves people with a strong sense of connection to their community and humanity — which lasts long past the actual event. This in turn consolidates their sense of meaning in life. “People who feel their lives have meaning are more likely to donate to charity,” Gabriel said.
Gabriel recommended pushing yourself to try different communal things and finding what you like. Whether you’re shy or just hate standing in a tight crowd, you can still find examples that work for you. “There are these really cool activities in a lot of big cities where people just get together to read,” Gabriel said. “They don’t even talk. People just get together at the park and read all together.”
12. How does the author explain collective effervescence in the first paragraph
A.By making comparisons. B.By offering a definition.
C.By quoting an expert. D.By giving examples.
13. Why do people need collective effervescence
A.To develop broad social bonds. B.To improve cooperative ability.
C.To release strong emotions. D.To build close friendships.
14. What does the underlined word “consolidates” in paragraph 4 mean
A.Requires. B.Loses. C.Displays. D.Strengthens.
15. What did Gabriel suggest shy people do
A.Read in public places. B.Engage in charity events.
C.Find suitable group activities. D.Force themselves to socialize.

How to make the most of a trip to the art museum
An afternoon at the art museum can be challenging. In a few hours, you’re tasked with appreciating dozens of the finest artistic works. Taking it all in is enough to make your head cloudy and your eyes roll. 16 Here are some tips to help you make the most of your art museum adventure.
Consider your physical comfort.
Although you are at the museum to enrich the mind and spirit, don’t ignore your physical comfort. Wear comfortable shoes, and don’t stand with your knees locked. 17 Many museums have excellent cafes.
Don’t try to see everything.
If there is a particular exhibition you’d like to see, go for that, and maybe one other thing. For example, if you are at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, you might limit yourself to the American Wing, or maybe a special exhibition. If you are at the Louvre and never expect to return, focus on the big hits, or “destination pieces.” 18 Also, the information desk can provide further guidance.
Know before you go.
If you know what you are going to see and have the time, do a little online research before heading to the museum. 19 If there is one particular artist whose works you expect to see, read a short biography or article about them, look up some criticism, and check out some of their other works.
Take notes.
If there is something that really appeals to you, write down the artist and title, and learn more later. More extensive notes are great if you want to remember a lot of information. If you plan to write down notes on paper (rather than on your phone), be sure to bring a pencil. 20
A.Paper notes are more likely to get lost.
B.But it doesn’t have to be this stressful.
C.You can find lists of these pieces online.
D.It’s also a good idea to take a snack break.
E.Of course, destination pieces vary among individuals.
F.It is comforting to see paintings that you can recognize.
G.Most museums have an accident-prevention “no pens” rule.

An environmental group in town recently hosted a fundraiser titled “Shut Your Phone, Embrace Nature”. We could help raise money if we stayed off our phones for an entire week. I loved the idea of doing something for nature, but it was summer vacation! Giving up my phone for one day felt hard enough, let alone a whole week. After some back-and-forth, I submitted my application on the very last day, ready to see if I could survive the challenge.
The day before the event, Mrs. Smith, our coordinator (项目负责人), explained the details. The goal was to encourage people to shift their attention from screens to nature and to raise money to upgrade the trails in the forest and around the pond of the park. As for us participants, we would lock our phones for seven days, and on the eighth day, we’d share our experiences at an event attended by community supporters. Mrs. Smith reminded us we could quit anytime if it became too difficult.
With a mix of dread and determination, I placed my phone in the locker, closing the door to Mrs. Smith’s reassuring smile. Thus began my week-long social media detox (脱瘾).
On the morning of the first day, my hand automatically reached for the bedside table, but my phone was missing. No checking messages before getting up. No e-reading during breakfast. No going through social media at times. I spent my first day doing homework, housework, reading, and watching TV. But from time to time, I felt around in my pockets, only to find my phone wasn’t there. The day seemed longer and I felt a sense of loss. But I was glad I had more time for something I wanted to do.
The second day went OK, but by the third, my anxiety boomed. I struggled to focus, and the urge to check my phone grew overwhelming. Impatient and restless, I called Mrs. Smith, ready to quit. To my surprise, she gently suggested I take a walk in the park.注意:

第二节 续写范文
Not understanding what her intention was, I still headed to the park. Wandering along the trails, I was amazed by the beautiful scenery I had never noticed before. Birds sang loudly in the trees and colorful flowers bloomed by the pond. I sat on a bench and enjoyed the fresh air peacefully. Gradually, my anxiety faded away. I began to walk around every day, exploring nature and talking with other visitors. I totally forgot about my phone and enjoyed the peaceful days.
The day to regain my phone finally came. I unlocked my phone but didn't rush to check messages immediately. At the sharing event, I told everyone how amazing the week without a phone was. This special experience taught me that nature is far more wonderful than virtual screens. From then on, I decide to put down my phone more often and spend more time getting close to nature.
