In America and Canada, a new activity known as “Zero Waste” is becoming popular. It is carried out (开展) in schools, coffee shops, sports centers, parks, restaurants and other places. “Zero Waste” activity calls on people to make less rubbish. It asks people to reduce things we use. People now are using more than they need.
According to a new report, American people produce the largest amount (量) of rubbish in the world. Each person produces about 4.6 pounds of rubbish each day. More than half of the rubbish is put into landfills (填埋场) and then burned. In fact, this is bad for the environment because it produces waste gas and pollutes water. “Nobody wants to have a landfill near his house,” said Jon D.Johnston, an expert (专家) from the Environmental Protection Organization.
More landfills are needed to help to carry out “Zero Waste” activity. There aren’t enough land-fills, so we can’t put all our rubbish into them. We should try to reduce and reuse as much as we can.
