At 27, as a new mother, I had been wrestling with stress and worry, which led me to explore acupuncture. A friend’s firm recommendation inspired me to book my first session. I chose Ora, a clinic I had visited during its grand opening in 2020, drawn to its environment and knowledgeable staff. Though the cost — $ 130 for an initial 65-minute session — was high, I viewed it as an investment in my well-being.
Before the appointment, I researched how to prepare: eating a meal to stabilize blood sugar and avoiding medicine to ensure relaxation. Upon arriving at Ora, I was struck by the calming atmosphere. After a brief consultation with my acupuncturist, Sian James, who evaluated my lifestyle and health concerns, I changed into a towel and lay down. James checked my tongue, noting its red tip as a sign of stress, and explained how it guided her needle placement.
She inserted 10-13 thin needles into my forehead, wrists, chest, knees, and feet. The slight pain was tolerable, and she explained that the selected points were targeted to stimulate my nervous system and release biochemicals to address stress. Once the needles were in place, I rested for 20-25 minutes in a dimly lit room with calming music. Initially tense, I eventually relaxed, drifting into a quiet state—deeply calm yet aware of my surroundings.
When James removed the needles, I felt a profound sense of quiet that lasted the entire day. She advised avoiding tiring activities to maintain the effects. While the calmness faded by Monday morning, the experience was impactful. Acupuncture forced me to pause, breathe, and disconnect from life’s pressures.
Though not a cure-all, acupuncture is a valuable tool for managing stress. As a person who struggled to unwind, I found it incredibly effective, and now, I plan to incorporate it into my routine. It’s a reminder to prioritize self-care. Otherwise, I couldn’t handle my busy work and daily life.
4. Why did the author decide to explore acupuncture
A.Because of a sports injury. B.Because of emotional anxiety.
C.Because of financial investment. D.Because of a firm’s recommendation.
5. What can be inferred about the acupuncturist’s treatment approach
A.It relied on surroundings over needles. B.It used finger pressure instead of needles.
C.It combined examination with assessment. D.It prioritized observation over communication.
6. How did the author feel after having acupuncture
A.Tired. B.Pressured. C.Cautious. D.Peaceful.
7. What does the author learn from her experience
A.Rome wasn’t built in a day. B.Busy hands make a happy heart.
C.You can’t pour from an empty cup. D.A calm sea does not make a skilled sailor.

At first glance, a Formula 1(F1) race seems to be a music festival. Friendship bracelets are exchanged like currency, outfits are coordinated, and signs are lovingly crafted by hand. Outside the circuit gates, fans cheer as drivers pass, hoping for a wave, a glance, or even an autograph (亲笔签名). Inside the fan zone, lines snake like they’re selling limited-edition T-shirts, and the roar of engines is matched only by the screams when a driver steps onstage.
In many ways, F1 drivers are no longer just elite athletes behind the wheel; they’re fashion muses, meme material, and, in the eyes of Gen Z, idols. This rise of emotionally engaged fandom has coincided with a surge in young female fans, and with it, a growing desire to see themselves reflected not just in the crowd but on the track. F1 remains a male-dominated sport, but that absence of females has only amplified (扩大) interest in the women racing just outside the spotlight, and in the people working to change the system from within.
F1 Academy; a new initiative led by former driver Susie Wolff, is a good example. “It’s about challenging the preconception that this is a man’s world. We need to be thankful that we have such a new, young audience and so many female fans because that didn’t exist when I was racing.” Wolff tells Teen Vogue.
For drivers in F1 Academy like Abbi Pulling, on the other hand, that visibility is both an opportunity and a weight. “I’ve been financially independent since I was 16,” she says. “All the expense is from my marketing deals.” The pressure to perform extends beyond the track. “Having a big following on social media is incredible, but it’s also scary, especially when you’re still a teenager just trying to become a better driver.”
Despite its small scale at present, in a sport that has long lacked visible representation for women, F1 Academy is offering something more than promise to young fans. “I always push our social team to make sure we’re creating content that’s inspiring for the next generation, ‘Wolff says. “We want to show them and their parents that there’s a tribe of women making their mark in what’s always been perceived as a male space.”
8. What does the author say about F1 fans at the beginning of the text
A.They treat the race in an unconventional way. B.They prefer buying limited-edition T-shirts.
C.They focus mainly on the drivers’ autographs. D.They enjoy the engine roar more than anything.
9. What does the underlined word “preconception” in paragraph 3 mean
A.Comprehension. B.Prejudice. C.Truth. D.Assumption.
10. What do we know about Abbi Pulling
A.She is already an official driver in F1 races. B.She supports herself through her own earnings.
C.She believes being popular is wonderful and rewarding. D.She feels social media following helps her concentrate.
11. What is the main idea of the text
A.F1 drivers are becoming new idols for Gen Z.
B.F1 races are more like musical festivals than traditional sports events.
C.F1 Academy is turning all young female fans into drivers.
D.F1 Academy is helping female drivers gain popularity despite challenges.
D
When spring arrives, keeping warm becomes less of an issue. However, scientists remind us it is not just a seasonal necessity — heat is also a valuable energy resource that can be stored. Researchers at Kaunas University of Technology (KTU) have discovered an innovative solution beneath our feet: using soil as an efficient thermal energy (热能) storage system.
KTU professor Dr Tadas dankus and his team have been investigating how the ground can serve as a medium for heat storage. At the core of their research is a ground-based heat accumulator that would store left energy underground and make it available when demand peaks.
At first, the team explored how to use wind energy to produce heat through a hydraulic system (液压系统). They discovered that hydraulic losses, which are usually considered a waste of energy, actually produced useful heat. However, part of heat was lost before reaching buildings. So the researchers wanted to find a way to not only reduce heat loss but also store the heat.
To test this idea, the researchers conducted experiments using an artificial heat source placed in top soil layers. They measured how heat spreads and stays in the ground. In one test, when the soil was heated to the boiling point, it caused a phase change (相变), in which liquid water becomes vapor (水蒸气). “Phase change can be an efficient way. We noticed a sharp temperature rise wherever the vapour flow reached. This means the energy is moving and can be controlled.” says Prof. dankus.
Once the possibility of underground heat storage was confirmed, researchers began exploring its practical applications. They developed a test model to study how heat spread through soil. The year-long measurements revealed the soil beneath buildings could passively store heat, making use of the natural downward flow of heat from buildings into the ground.
To put these ground-based storage systems into widespread use, researchers are now developing scaled-down test models and refining heat distribution control methods. “Our immediate goal is to integrate existing solutions into a system that can benefit both industrial and residential sectors.” dankus concludes.
12. What is the main goal of the KTU research project
A.To cut down winter heating costs. B.To collect heat directly from the soil.
C.To make the hydraulic system more efficient. D.To use soil to store heat for future use.
13. What can be inferred from paragraphs 3-4
A.Hydraulic losses can be avoided by heat transfer. B.Phase change makes heat control possible.
C.Producing heat from wind energy is impossible. D.Vapour flow contributes to big temperature drops.
14. What are researchers doing for the practical use of the systems
A.Building large heating systems for factories. B.Reducing heat loss from buildings completely.
C.Applying the technology to residential sectors. D.Developing test models with improved control.
15. Which of the following would be the suitable title for the text
A.From Wind to Warmth: an Unexpected Path
B.Future System: Uniting Industry and Home Heating
C.The Ground Beneath: A New Frontier in Heat Storage
D.A New Discovery: Turning Hydraulic Loss into Gain

Algorithms (算法) on social media are one of the tools used by technology companies on the apps, games and websites we use every day. They show you content you enjoy so that you spend more time on their sites. 16
The Negative Side of Algorithms
The algorithm grabs your attention in numerous ways. Humans naturally seek connection from others, so each time you receive a “like” or a friendly comment on your posts, it releases a substance in your brain called dopamine (多巴胺) that gives you a happy feeling. The trouble is, these brief highs can be followed with a low that leaves you searching more. 17 This can strengthen beliefs, because no one is offering a different opinion.
What’s the Solution
If you are on social media then there are ways to mitigate (缓解) the negative effects;
Have a time limit
18 . A study found that people who deactivated social media reported greater levels of happiness and life satisfaction, and lower levels of depression and anxiety.
Notice your mood
Check in with yourself before, during and after using social media. 19 Notice the curiosity and desire that tempts you to keep clicking. From time to time, ask yourself, do you really want to look at this, or is there something else you would prefer to be doing
20
Save likes and comments for your close friends, but don’t engage with content unless you really need to. This keeps a healthy distance between you and the algorithm. Avoid caring about negative content too much, as this can help you feel uplifted rather than depressed.
A.Engage carefully
B.Ignore negative comments
C.Find out how you are feeling when scrolling
D.Putting your mental health to the top priority is essential
E.But in doing so, they can influence your thinking as well
F.Limiting social media use to thirty minutes daily may help
G.Algorithms also operate by drawing people into echo chambers (回声室)

On the morning of her seventh birthday, Chinese-American girl Mulan awoke feeling excited. All she had dreamed of for months was a bicycle of her very own — a red one, swift as the wind. When she dashed downstairs and saw the large, ribbon-topped box waiting, her heart soared. Inside gleamed the most perfect bike she could imagine. “It’s magnificent!” she cried, giving it a test spin around the kitchen tiles. She named it “Comet (彗星)” on the spot.
That very afternoon, the school carnival was buzzing with noise and music. Mulan rode Comet proudly alongside her best friends, Lily and Chloe. When Lily spotted a stand selling personalized bike license plates (牌照), the idea was irresistible. “We have to get matching ones!” she exclaimed. The three girls hurried over, their coins clutched tightly.
Lily and Chloe found their names in an instant among the neat rows of letters. But Mulan scanned the display again and again. ADAM, AMY, ANNA... her eyes moved down the alphabet, past the MACs and MONAs, but her name was nowhere to be seen. A small knot of disappointment tightened in her stomach.“Excuse me,” she asked the stand attendant, “are there any more plates in the back ”
The man shook his head, barely looking up from his newspaper. “Please, could you check ” Mulan insisted, her voice hopeful. He sighed. “What’s the name ” Mulan,” she said clearly. He frowned. “Come again Spell it.” M—U—L—A—N, she spelled out, each letter feeling heavier than the last.
To her horror, a snicker (暗笑) came from behind her. Zac, a boy from the grade above, was watching. “Of course they don’t have it,” he called out. “It’s not even a real name! MOO-lan! Sounds like a cow!” A few other kids nearby giggled. Mulan’s checks flamed, and the world seemed to shrink to the sound of that cruel version of her name. Tears filled her eyes as she fled, leaving the stand and the laughter behind.注意:

47. 读后续写
The moment she got home, Mulan shouted, “I’m done with being called Mulan!” She threw herself on the sofa, tears rolling down her cheeks. Seeing how upset she was, her mother sat beside her gently and comforted her. She told Mulan that her name carried beautiful Chinese culture and meant bravery and grace. Instead of feeling ashamed, she should be proud of her special name. Inspired by her mother’s words, Mulan decided to make a unique license plate by herself. With colored pens and paper, she carefully drew patterns and wrote down her name proudly.
Her handmade plate on the bike, Mulan left for school early in the morning. When she rode her bike around the school, many students noticed the special plate. To her surprise, Zac came up and said the name sounded nice and meaningful. Mulan smiled widely. From that day on, she loved her name more than ever. She realized that being different was nothing to fear, and she would always cherish her cultural identity.
