If you were standing outside the Louvre in Paris on the morning of August 21, 1911, you might have noticed three men hurrying out of the museum. They seemed very tired, because they’d just spent the night in an art-supply container. And on that morning, with the Louvre still closed, they slipped out of their hiding place and lifted the painting, the Mona Lisa off the wall and headed to the Quai d’Orsay Station, where they boarded a 07:47 express train out of the city.
Twenty-eight hours passed when an artist, who felt he couldn’t work if the Mona Lisa wasn’t there, noticed the absence of the painting. But the artist wasn’t alarmed. At that time, there was a project under way to photograph the Louvre’s many works. Each piece had to be taken to the roof, since cameras did not work well inside in those days. So he persuaded a guard to check how long the photographers were going to have the painting. The guard came back and said, “The photographers say they don’t have it!”
After the Louvre announced the theft, newspapers all over the world ran headlines about the missing painting and it became an incredibly famous painting—literally overnight. Although critics began to consider the Mona Lisa, which was completed in 1507, as one of Leonardo da Vinci’s masterpieces in the 1860s, it wasn’t even the most famous painting in its gallery, let alone in the Louvre.
The thieves turned out to be three Italians: two brothers, Vincenzo and Michele Lancelotti, and a handyman, Vincenzo Perugia, who had worked for the Louvre. They hoped to sell the painting. But the painting had received so much attention that it became too hot to hock. So they hid it in their Paris boardinghouse.
Twenty-eight months later, they finally decided to sell it to an art dealer in Florence, Italy. But the dealer reported to the police and they ended up in prison for eight months.

Deep underground beneath the Royal Botanic Gardens Kew in southern England is the Millennium Seed Bank where more than 2.5 billion wild plant seeds from around 40,000 species are stored.
The process begins far from the seed bank. Field collectors in places such as Madagascar, Thailand, Greece and Arctic Sweden gather seeds from wild plants and send them to Kew. Then they are kept at 15℃ and 15% humidity (湿度) for about three months, allowing them to dry slowly and evenly. Once dried, they are moved to the cleaning room, where technicians separate them from dust and rocks. The germination test is the last and most important process. In a lab, the light and temperature of each seed’s native environment is reproduced to confirm whether the seeds are still alive before storage. Only good seeds are placed in the bank, where the cold and dryness extend their life. Scientists say that for every 1% reduction in humidity and every 5℃ drop in temperature, the seeds’ life can double.
Seeds from hot areas with high water content cannot survive freezing. So researchers are developing a cryopreservation method using liquid N to keep them alive at even lower temperatures.
Biologist Dale Sanders said the need for genetic resources like those stored at Kew will grow as the world is expected to have 2 billion more people by 2050 and new agricultural land runs out. “Within species there is incredible genetic diversity, which protects against disease, climate change and other threats,” he said. “Maintaining that diversity is essential if we want to meet the challenges and preserve the diversity of life itself.”
Since the seed bank opened, it has grown into a global partnership with 279 organizations in more than 100 countries. And it has managed to conserve 40,000 species there. But the seed bank is not meant to be the final resting place for the seeds. The next 25 years will focus on using them to restore natural habitats and help fight against biodiversity loss and climate change in England and abroad.
8. What is the second paragraph mainly about
A.A very important test.
B.The process to preserve seeds.
C.The sources of the seeds.
D.Typical ways to control seeds’ life.
9. What is employed in the cryopreservation method
A.A liquid gas.
B.Water.
C.Oxygen.
D.Heat.
10. Which statement will Dale Sanders probably agree with
A.New farmland should be found.
B.Seeds at Kew should be used in England.
C.Storing seeds at Kew is too costly.
D.Seed banks have important roles to play.
11. What is the Millennium Seed Bank’s plan for the near future
A.To develop better storage methods.
B.To collect more plant seeds.
C.To use the seeds in related projects.
D.To expand the bank’s network.

Due to complex production processes and regional variations, it’s almost impossible to define lacquer ware (漆器) in simple words. Put simply, it refers to anything painted with lacquer on the surface.
Lacquer is a natural paint harvested from a poisonous tree that is only found in China, Japan and Korea. Once dried, it is remarkably resistant to water, acid, and, to a certain degree, heat. It is collected between June and October. A worker can generally handle 400-500 lacquer trees and gather up to 75kg in total per year.
After the milky liquid is collected, it is gently heated to remove water and impurities. Purified lacquer can then be applied to the surface of nearly any object made from wood, bamboo, cloth or metals. Once coated with a thin layer of lacquer, the object has to be placed in a warm place to dry. Usually, lacquer ware requires thirty or more coatings.
While items covered with lacquer have been found in China since the New Stone Age, lacquer ware with complex decoration made its first appearance during the Warring States Period (475-221 BC).
Since then, lacquer ware as an art form has developed along two distinct paths in China: surface decoration and lacquer carving. Surface decoration usually takes the form of painting. Carved lacquer ware, which combines the skills of painting and carving, is a unique Chinese achievement in lacquer art and is also lacquer art in its purest form.
During Tang Dynasty, lacquer decoration was introduced to Korea and Japan, where it took on a life of its own. In Korea, najeonchilgi became the dominant decorative technique and it has continued as such to the present day. Known for its beautiful changing lights, Korean lacquer ware is coated with lacquer mixed with shiny mother-of-pearl powder (珍珠母粉末). On the other hand, a technique called maki-e has developed to the highest degree in Japan, which either mixes gold and silver in powder to produce gold or silver lacquer, or spreads them over the lacquer surface to create a gold or silver effect.
12. What can we know about lacquer
A.It can protect items coated with it.
B.It is a newly invented paint.
C.It can be found all around the globe.
D.It has to be harvested in winter.
13. Which is considered as the unique form of lacquer art in China
A.Maki-e.
B.Lacquer carving.
C.Surface decoration.
D.Najeonchilgi.
14. What is Korean lacquer ware best-known for
A.Its artistic carving.
B.Its gold or silver effect.
C.Its purest painting.
D.Its changing shiny lights.
15. In which section of a newspaper may this text appear
A.Politics.
B.Technology.
C.Culture.
D.Advertisement.

On a hot afternoon, I saw an elderly woman struggle with bags of groceries. I’d seen her before, each time feeling guilty I didn’t offer her a lift.
This day, I decided to help. Slowing down, I opened the window and called out, “Need a ride Let me help you with your groceries.” Getting out of the car, I placed her bags into my trunk (后备箱) . Then I helped her into the passenger seat, forgetting that I had left my wallet on the passenger seat.
She directed me to go farther south. After about half an hour, we continued down unfamiliar streets until she finally pointed to an old apartment building where she lived. Several young men in their early twenties had gathered around the entrance. They were dressed in an odd way and appeared threatening. One young man with long and bushy hair was on a motorcycle and chewing something.
I got uncomfortable, assuming that I had put myself in danger, but the elderly woman didn’t sense my nervousness. I stopped the car where she had indicated and opened the trunk. I urged her to take out her groceries quickly. I drove away as fast as I could before she could thank me.
Relieved to see familiar street signs, I turned on the radio and played some familiar music. Suddenly, the peaceful atmosphere was interrupted by the roar (轰鸣声) of a motorcycle behind me. Slowing down, I was hoping he would pass me. I recognized the rider — the young man with long and bushy hair. He didn’t pass me but continued to follow me closely. I realized he was waving for me to stop.
No way was I going to stop for him. Instead, I tried to speed away as fast as I could, but he raced after me again. I had to stop my car and search for my cell phone to call the police, only to realize I’d left it in my wallet. 注意:1. 续写词数应为150个左右;

47. 读后续写
My heart sank when I found my wallet on the passenger seat missing. Panic washed over me immediately. All my money and important cards were inside. Staring at the young man outside the window, I felt extremely regretful for my earlier prejudice. I had no choice but to roll down the window and prepared to explain the situation nervously, not knowing what would happen next.
“Your wallet slipped off your car when the elderly woman got off,” the young man said. He held out my wallet with a sincere smile. He told me the old lady noticed it at once and asked them to catch up and return it. Hearing this, my face burned with shame. I judged people simply by their appearance. This experience taught me never to let prejudice blind my eyes and always believe in kindness around us.
