Fifteen-year-olds Yan Benini and Matheus pull a rope to cut a seed from a jatobá tree. The seed, about the size of a small orange, drops to the ground and will later be used to help transform old farmland into forests. Dayana Duarte of Iracambi, an organisation working to protect and restore Brazil’s Atlantic Forest, explains that such efforts rely on children and local communities. Since 2000, Iracambi has planted 250,000 trees and hopes to reach one million by 2030. Its goal is to train young leaders to protect the environment.
Once stretching along Brazil’s east coast, the Atlantic Forest has suffered centuries of deforestation for farming and wood. Today, only 26 percent remains. It is home to many endangered species. Protecting the forest is challenging, but Iracambi continues through restoration projects, environmental education and volunteer programmes.
Iracambi also runs workshops on useful plants for local women. The Eco-leader Program, carried out with four local schools, teaches children aged 5 to 15 about wildlife, forest history and the importance of the natural environment. “There’s no point in planting a new forest if it isn’t going to be taken care of,” Duarte says.
Coordinator Mariana Faccina collects leaves of the trees, traditionally used in folk medicine, to make oils for workshops where women produce natural skin products they can later sell. These activities support research, education and conservation, while helping communities explore alternative income sources.
Iracambi further educates locals about the environmental impact of mining. The region contains large amounts of mineral resources, attracting mining companies.
Still, change is taking place. Through Iracambi’s efforts, children, families and communities are becoming active protectors of the Atlantic Forest, turning conservation into a shared responsibility.
4. What are Yan Benini and Matheus doing in the first paragraph
A.Studying environmental science.

C.Training to be community leaders.
D.Volunteering for a mining company.
5. Why does the author mention the history of the Atlantic Forest
A.To justify the need for protection.
B.To explain the cause of deforestation.
C.To highlight its current economic value.
D.To track regional population growth.
6. What can we learn about Iracambi’s approach to conservation
A.It prioritizes tree planting over education.
B.It replaces traditional farming methods.
C.It aims to stop all mining activities.
D.It combines education with community action.
7. What is the message of the last paragraph
A.Conservation is a shared responsibility.
B.Local projects bring immediate success.
C.Mining has a positive impact on change.
D.Government policy is the key to progress.

A visit to a supermarket offers you choices from a wide range of produce, not only vegetables of all sorts but also berries and other fruit. It’s not so easy for farmers, though. They have to decide what to grow while worrying about getting their crops enough water and wondering if they’ll make money.
Many aspects of farming are difficult, says mathematician Estelle Basor. Farmers face a lot of unknowns, including weather, pests, and an idea in economics called supply and demand.
Basor was one of several mathematicians who worked together to come up with methods to help farmers solve the main problem, that is, to make decisions about what to grow, and especially how to reduce water use.
In recent years, California has suffered a drought. The Pajaro Valley and other areas of the state are feeling the effects of the shortage of rainfall. Many farmers are interested in whether it would be worthwhile to switch to crops that use less water but that people will still buy.
The mathematicians started to build a computer model to collect information on water use, crop prices, and other variables. They then programmed computers to find the combination of crops that would produce the highest profit using the least amount of water.
The initial version modeled a 100-acre farm planted with various combinations of five different crop types. On this virtual farm, raspberries, which use less water, proved to be more profitable than strawberries.
The researchers have been checking with farmers to see whether their model offers reasonable results, and so far the response is encouraging. They hope that their model will eventually help farmers all across the country.
8. What challenge do farmers mainly face according to the passage
A.Cutting production costs in dry seasons.
B.Responding quickly to market demand.
C.Making crop choices under water limits.
D.Dealing with risks from new technology.
9. Why did the mathematicians build a computer model for farming decisions
A.To predict future food shortages.
B.To balance profit with water use.
C.To reduce uncertainty in crop pricing.
D.To test changes in farming methods.
10. What does the example of raspberries mainly show
A.Strawberries are harder to manage.
B.Consumer demand decides crop prices.
C.Virtual farms exactly match real farms.
D.Water-efficient crops can be more profitable.
11. What is the main idea of the passage
A.Data models guide better crop choices.
B.Market demand determines crop production.
C.Technology is replacing traditional farming.
D.Water shortages are changing farming practices.
D
Hard plastic made from bamboo is as strong and durable as conventional plastics used in household appliances and vehicle parts, while also being recyclable and able to break down naturally under suitable conditions.
Plastics produced from biological sources are becoming more popular, yet they still account for only a small share each year. This is partly because many bioplastics lack the strength of oil-based plastics and are difficult to use in standard industrial processes, limiting their wider adoption.
To solve the problem, Zhao Dawei and his colleagues of Shenyang University of Chemical Technology in China have developed a new plastic made from bamboo, which can match or even exceed the properties of widely used plastics. Zhao explains that bamboo grows rapidly and is a renewable alternative, although its applications have long been limited to simple woven or low-strength products.
To produce the new material, the team treated bamboo with zinc chloride (氯化锌) and a mild acid, breaking it down into smaller cell units. Ethanol was then added, allowing these units to rearrange into a strong, solid plastic. According to Andrew Dove at the University of Birmingham, the resulting material shows strength comparable to common engineering plastics used in vehicles, appliances and construction.
However, its rigidity limits the range of practical uses. Andrew Dove notes that it is unlikely to replace major packaging plastics such as polyethylene (聚乙烯) and polypropylene (聚丙烯), which have greater flexibility. Instead, the new material may help reduce pressure on resources in certain areas.
Although the material is currently more expensive than widely used plastics, Zhao’s team found that it can be fully recycled while retaining around 90 per cent of its original strength. The researchers also report that it can break down naturally within about 50 days, while traditional plastics take hundreds of years.
12. What problem with existing bioplastics is highlighted in the passage
A.High production cost.
B.Limited mechanical strength.
C.Insufficient raw materials.
D.Slow technological progress.
13. Why are Zhao Dawei and his team introduced in the passage
A.To compare recycling technologies.
B.To describe academic collaboration.
C.To present a research solution.
D.To highlight the economic value of bamboo.
14. What does the underlined word “rigidity” most nearly mean
A.Hardness.
B.Flexibility.
C.Quality.
D.Weight.
15. What can be learnt about the bioplastic according to the passage
A.It is both flexible and tough.
B.It can be used in nearly all industries.
C.It is cheap as well as convenient.
D.It can break down sooner than traditional plastics.

How to Choose a College Major That’s Right for You
Choosing a college major can feel like the most significant decision ever, but take a deep breath! It’s absolutely okay if you’re initially unsure about what to study. In fact, most students start college undecided or end up changing their major. 16 What you should do is to find a path that excites you and sets you up for a rewarding future.
●Reflect on your passion. Start by asking yourself: What topics or activities am I passionate about What are my strengths at school Write down your answers and look for patterns. The goal is to identify what truly excites you. 17 As Steve Jobs said, “The only way to do great work is to love what you do.”
●Research majors and careers. Once you’ve identified your passion, it’s time to do some homework. Use online tools to search for jobs and see what majors or training you need. It is also wise to check if a specific field is growing or shrinking. 18 Arm yourself with knowledge of the job outlook and salary data to make an informed choice.
●Test-drive your interests. You wouldn’t buy a car without a test drive; similarly, you shouldn’t “buy into” a major without trying it out! 19 Volunteering or job shadowing also helps you see the day-to-day reality of a job. Hands-on experience will help you learn more about yourself as well.
● 20 Discussing your thoughts with trusted adults is helpful; they can offer guidance and perspective. Listen to their advice, but ultimately make the right choice for yourself. Think of picking a major as picking a direction to begin your journey — you can always shift course along the way.
A.Seek advice but decide for yourself.
B.The test helps you understand the real market.
C.This uncertainty shouldn’t stop you from moving forward.
D.Focus on your strengths rather than your personal interests.
E.High school is the perfect time to explore these possibilities.
F.Success comes easier when you’re passionate about your work.
G.For example, careers in tech are booming while others grow slowly.

As the college entrance examination approached, every minute seemed precious to me. I spent long hours in the classroom, trying to stay focused on piles of exercises and endless test papers. Like many of my classmates, I believed that success depended on making full use of every second.
However, something unexpected began to disturb our routine. Every evening from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m., a group of noisy birds called koels (噪鹃) would start singing right outside our classroom window. Their cry was sharp — a single loud note repeated again and again, like someone shouting the same word without stopping. First came one bird, and then several others joined in. The sound was over 8000 Hz, high enough to cut through the quiet of the evening. And they never seemed to get tired. One would pause, another would start, and the chorus went on and on.
At the beginning, I didn’t pay much attention. In fact, there were moments when the sound felt almost pleasant, reminding me that spring had quietly arrived. But as the days went by, the singing became increasingly frequent and intense. My homework was full of mistakes, and I found myself reading the same line over and over. The more I tried to focus, the more the birds seemed to be singing right into my ears.
Some classmates began to complain. One of them even joked that the birds seemed to have better energy than we did. Yet others remained silent, choosing to endure it. As for me, I felt caught in between. I knew the birds meant no harm, but I also couldn’t ignore the pressure we were under.
One night, after another ruined study session, I lay in bed with my ears still ringing. I couldn’t take it anymore.注意:

Dear Ms. Green,
How is everything going I’m writing to ask you for a favor.
In my information technology class recently, I designed a small app to help students memorize English words. It collects common vocabulary and matches each word with practical example sentences. I have spent quite a lot of time on it, yet I’m worried that there might be spelling or grammar mistakes in the words and sentences.
Could you please spare some time to check it for me If you find any errors, please point them out. Besides, I would also appreciate it if you could give me some advice to improve the app.
Thank you very much for your kindness and help. Looking forward to your reply.
Yours,
Li Hua
六、读后续写(范文)
I decided to do something to make a change. I sat down and wrote a letter to the headmaster that night. I stated clearly how the loud singing of koels affected our study efficiency, making it hard for us to concentrate on review tasks. I hoped the school could take some measures to drive the birds away or block the noise, so that we could create a quiet learning environment for the coming exam. The next morning, I handed the letter to the headmaster’s office anxiously.
The headmaster received my letter, but he refused my request. He explained that the birds were part of the campus natural scenery and we had no right to disturb them. Hearing his words, I felt upset at first. Later, I tried to calm down and learn to live with the bird songs. Gradually, I managed to focus on study despite the noise. I realized that true peace lies in our mind, and we should learn to adapt to difficulties instead of escaping from them.
