How Reading Shaped a Film Director
Paul Schrader, the renowned American film director, recently premiered his latest cinematic work. However, his path to artistic success was far from conventional. Born into a strict Calvinist family, Schrader was entirely shielded from modern entertainment until he was seventeen. “Movies were strictly forbidden by my church,” he recalls. “We didn’t go to theaters, and we were exceptionally late to television. Instead, we were immersed in reading.”
This unexpected limitation, which might have frustrated others, gradually transformed into his greatest advantage. While his peers were consuming popular TV shows, young Schrader was digesting classic literature. His absolute favorite was The Pilgrim’s Progress, a profound narrative about a man undertaking a dangerous journey to achieve salvation. Rather than merely skimming the plot, Schrader visualized every scene. “That book really brought me in because of the vivid, beautiful pictures of being brave it painted in my mind,” he notes. The intricate descriptions of the protagonist’s emotional struggles substituted for the visual stimulation he lacked, secretly training his brain to think like a camera.
The reading habit acquired in his lonely youth stayed with him long after he entered the film industry. Even today, Schrader deliberately alternates between serious literary masterpieces and popular fiction. He firmly believes that diving into classics by authors like Dostoevsky or Austen can reenergize a tired creator. “Every few years, you should put your toe back in the water,” he advises young filmmakers. For him, these timeless texts serve as a wellspring of inspiration, providing complex character studies that modern scripts often lack.
Now, at seventy-eight, Schrader looks back on his restrictive upbringing with deep gratitude rather than bitterness. The books he devoured shaped not only his distinctive directorial style but also his resilient character. “Those authors that punch you early, punch you for a reason,” he concludes with a smile. “And they usually hang around to guide your lens.”
4. What characterized Schrader’s early family life
A.Strict religious rules prohibiting modern entertainment.
B.A strong passion for pursuing a cinematic career.
C.Poverty that prevented them from buying a television.
D.Frequent family trips to local movie theaters.
5. What can be inferred about Schrader’s experience with The Pilgrim’s Progress
A.He read it primarily to fulfill his church’s requirements.
B.He found its plot too complicated to understand at the time.
C.It helped develop his ability to form visual images in his mind.
D.It convinced him to give up religion for an artistic career.
6. What does the underlined word “reenergize” in paragraph 3 most probably mean
A.Force someone to work harder.
B.Cause someone to reflect on the past.
C.Make someone feel entirely exhausted.
D.Give someone fresh vitality and inspiration.
7. What is the main message conveyed in the text
A.Literary classics are superior to modern popular movies.
B.Early life limitations can unexpectedly foster later success.
C.A strict upbringing is the guarantee of a filmmaker’s creativity.
D.Reading fiction is the only path to mastering directing skills.

No One Has to Settle for Bad Pizza Anymore
If you have ever tried to make pizza at home, you know the disappointing result: a crust that is either burnt or undercooked, and cheese that turns into a pool of grease. The truth is, traditional home ovens cannot reach the high temperatures needed for restaurant-quality pizza. An authentic Neapolitan pizza requires about 950 degrees Fahrenheit, but a typical kitchen oven only reaches 550 degrees.
This problem has now been solved by portable pizza ovens. These small outdoor devices can reach extremely high heat in just 15 minutes. The most popular brand, Ooni, launched its first product on Kickstarter in 2012. Similar products are now available from companies including Cuisinart, Ninja, and Gozney. These ovens are not complicated, but they are clever: they are inexpensive, compact, and can be taken camping or to beach vacations.
The trend took off during the pandemic. When people were stuck at home in 2020, many turned to cooking projects. Ooni’s sales increased by 300 percent that year, and demand has remained strong since. “At housewares shows these days, you see pizza ovens all over,” said Joe Derochowski, an analyst at the market-research firm Circana.
The appeal goes beyond convenience. Like grilling, using a pizza oven satisfies the human desire to cook with fire. “It’s the next generation of grilling,” said Scott Wiener, a pizza expert in New York City. So if you want perfect pizza at home, maybe it’s time to get your own pizza oven.
8. What can be inferred about traditional home ovens from paragraph 1
A.They are capable of making restaurant-quality pizza with proper skills.
B.They are cheaper than portable pizza ovens in the long run.
C.Their maximum temperature is insufficient for authentic Neapolitan pizza.
D.Their heating speed is faster than portable pizza ovens.
9. According to the passage, what happened to Ooni’s sales in 2020
A.They doubled. B.They tripled. C.They remained unchanged. D.They dropped sharply.
10. What does the word “compact” in paragraph 2 probably mean
A.Extremely expensive B.Available online
C.Complicated to use D.Small and portable
11. What is the main purpose of the passage
A.To introduce portable pizza ovens as a solution to home cooking problems
B.To explain why pizza is popular in America
C.To compare different brands of pizza ovens
D.To teach readers how to make pizza at home
D
America Needs to Radically Rethink What It Means to Be Old
In 1960, Del Webb opened Sun City, America’s first “active retirement community.” At that time, this represented a breakthrough: Social Security and pensions had freed millions of older Americans from poverty, and a new lifestyle — leisure in retirement — seemed like a great achievement.
But that model is now outdated. Life expectancy in the U.S. has risen dramatically: from 36 years in 1776 Massachusetts to 77.5 years today. An American child born today may well live to 95. The first person to live to 150 may already have been born.
Two scholars offer different perspectives. James Chappel, in Golden Years, argues that government must expand welfare programs to meet the needs of a growing elderly population. Andrew J. Scott, in The Longevity Imperative, takes a different view: he believes the three-stage life structure — education, work, retirement — is no longer suitable. Instead, people should see aging as a continuous process. Jobs should adapt to older workers, and age-based entitlements should be replaced with policies based on individual needs.
Both authors agree on one thing: the traditional retirement age of 65 makes little sense when people are living so much longer. What we need is a new concept called “late adulthood”— a life stage between middle age and old age, when people can pursue new interests, work in less demanding jobs, and contribute to their communities. The question is whether society will accept this new vision of aging.
12. According to the passage, what was Sun City’s significance when it opened in 1960
A.It was the first university for senior citizens.
B.It solved the problem of elderly poverty completely.
C.It represented a new lifestyle for retired people.
D.It marked the beginning of government pensions.
13. What can be inferred about Chappel and Scott from the passage
A.They both believe the current three-stage life structure is still effective.
B.They disagree on whether government welfare programs should be expanded.
C.They hold identical opinions on how to define “late adulthood”.
D.They both think the retirement age of 65 should be raised to 95.
14. How do Chappel and Scott differ in their views
A.Chappel focuses on government action; Scott focuses on individual adaptation.
B.Chappel wants to keep the retirement system; Scott wants to end it.
C.Both believe the elderly should stop working completely.
D.Both think government spending should be reduced.
15. What is the main purpose of the passage
A.To persuade readers to retire early.
B.To criticize the current retirement system.
C.To explain why people are living longer.
D.To argue for redefining the concept of aging.

Three Exceptional Panettones
Panettone is a round, fruit-studded Italian sweet bread that’s popular during the holiday season. For years, I wasn’t a fan of this treat. The ones I tried were dry and crumbly, like week-old cake. But then a friend gave me a special panettone that changed everything. 16 It was so light and tender that it melted in my mouth.
Making good panettone is extremely difficult. 17 First, the batter requires a complex, multistage proofing process to achieve the perfect texture. Then, the loaves need to bake at just the right temperature to rise properly without collapsing. Even after baking, they must be flipped upside down to cool, hanging like bats until completely set.
Not all panettones are created equal. Here are three exceptional varieties that are worth the splurge:
Panettone Biasetto, $70
This golden loaf from Belgium-Italian pastry chef Luigi Biasetto has a rich citrus-and-vanilla aroma. Inside, the marigold-bright crumb is studded with candied citrus peel and plump raisins. 18 The extra warmth opens up the flavors and softens any sharpness from the citrus.
Acetaia Leonardi Panettone Balsamico with Sour Cherry, $50 60
Made by a balsamic vinegar manufacturer in Emilia-Romagna, this panettone has a unique twist. The buttery interior is swirled with aged balsamic crema, giving it a dense, melty texture. 19 The sourness balances the sweetness perfectly, creating a delightful contrast.
Olivieri 1882 Apricot and Salted Caramel Panettone, $95
This family bakery from Veneto has perfected panettone over 142 years. Their apricot and salted caramel version is especially creative. The floral apricot pieces and gentle caramel swirl add extra sweetness and depth. 20 Whether you’re a panettone lover or new to this holiday treat, these three varieties are sure to impress. Each offers a unique take on this classic Italian dessert.
A.To fully enjoy it, serve it slightly warmed, perhaps resting on a radiator.
B.Its light, airy crumb and delicate sweetness won me over instantly.
C.The cooling process requires the loaves to hang upside down like bats.
D.The sour cherry version adds a tangy kick that complements the sweet vinegar.
E.It is widely considered one of the most challenging bread recipes to master.
F.The rich citrus-and-vanilla aroma wafts toward you the moment you unwrap the packaging.
G.The salt cuts through the richness, revealing notes of honey and lemon.

My wife and I wanted to share our new home with family and friends by hosting a small gathering in the early summer. She had prepared lots of snacks, while my job was to have the backyard in order.
There was plenty of space for the kids to run and play. There was just one thing I hadn’t counted on: My brother chose to bring his dog Toby, a 50-pound ball of fire. Though friendly, he could easily knock over my niece’s small boys and my six-month-old granddaughter. So, when my brother showed up, I asked him to watch Toby and keep him outside.
My plan was working out just fine. Toby was using up his energy by running back and forth in the backyard and giving the kids plenty of room. Unexpectedly, after supper, the weather changed. It started to rain and everyone went indoors.
It was an awkward moment. I didn’t want Toby to be running around in the house, and my brother wasn’t happy with driving home with a wet dog. Eventually, my brother decided to leave rather than force the issue.
A few days passed, and I hadn’t heard anything from my brother. I texted him and expressed wishes for him to come out again. His reply came as a surprise — a shock, actually: “Not a chance.” Clearly, he was unhappy over the way we had parted. After all, I had left him little choice. Well, he’ll get over it, I reasoned.
Two months passed. My wife suggested I get in touch with my brother, but I resisted, thinking he should call first. However, my conscience kept bothering me. I tried to put myself in my brother’s shoes. He was facing health issues and his wife of thirty-five years had passed away a few months earlier. Toby was his constant companion, the one who kept him going.

I realized it was me who was at fault. I only thought about my own family and ignored my brother’s feelings. Toby was not just a dog but his spiritual support after his wife’s death. I felt really regretful for being so selfish. I decided to pay a visit to my brother and sincerely apologize for my rudeness that day. My wife also prepared some homemade biscuits as a gift for them.
With the biscuits my wife had made, I arrived at my brother’s door. He opened the door with a cold look. I said sorry honestly and explained that I finally understood how important Toby was to him. His face softened gradually. He accepted my apology and let me in. We chatted happily for a long time. At last, the misunderstanding between us was cleared up and our bond became stronger again.
