Krystal Mwesiga Birungi vividly remembers the first time she had malaria when she was just five years old. It was a feeling of overwhelming weakness. Despite having a burning thirst, she was unable to lift her head for a sip of water. She could not eat because she would immediately throw up. She would shake violently, feeling freezing cold even though she had a dangerously high fever.
When Krystal and her two younger brothers were growing up, their mother worked to support the family. When one of her children got malaria, the mother was left with the impossible decision of whether to stay at home and care for her sick child or go to work to earn money to pay for the treatment.
The horrific impact that malaria had on her family and community inspired Krystal to dedicate her life to terminating the disease. Today, Krystal works as a field entomologist at the Uganda Virus Research Institute on a project called Target Malaria, which aims to develop genetic technology to reduce mosquito populations and interrupt transmission of the disease.
But children there can’t wait. Uganda’s tropical climate and mix of warm, humid forests and large agricultural settlements create a fertile breeding ground for mosquitoes that carry malaria. Luckily, the Global Fund is there to help. Krystal says that the Global Fund’s arrival in Uganda was a game changer. By 2023, with its support, the usage rate of long-lasting insecticidal nets among at-risk groups in Uganda had reached 53%, and over 95% of people with symptoms received malaria tests. Uganda reported 12.6 million malaria cases in 2023, remaining a high-burden country, but the fund’s 2.7 billion US dollars investment in malaria control across high-burden countries including Uganda in 2024 has sustained progress in prevention.
Today, Krystal is a mother to a three-year-old son, Theo. She is thankful that she does not face the same challenges that her mother did. And she believes that with joint efforts, malaria will be greatly reduced as a threat to children’s childhoods.
4. What can we learn from Krystal’s experience at five
A.Malaria spread fast among kids.
B.Malaria used to be common in Uganda.
C.Malaria had similar symptoms to a cold.
D.Malaria was a greatly threatening disease.
5. What does the underlined word “terminating” in Paragraph 3 mean
A.Ending.
B.Curing.
C.Demonstrating.
D.Researching.
6. How does the author stress the Global Fund’s significance
A.By quoting Krystal’s words.
B.By telling stories related to malaria.
C.By giving specific achievement data.
D.By listing its scientific breakthroughs.
7. Which of the following best describes Krystal
A.Tolerant.
B.Sympathetic.
C.Considerate.
D.Innovative.

In recent years, a new trend has become common in branding: everyday products such as food, drinks and even tools are given human features, like smiling faces and simple arms and legs. These lively images can now be seen in shops, advertisements and online platforms. They are often bright in color and simple in form, which makes them easy to notice and remember. This raises a question: why are such cartoon-like designs so popular
One reason is their emotional appeal. In a fast-paced and sometimes stressful world, people are naturally drawn to things that are simple and pared with more serious or formal designs, these playful images can make people feel relaxed. By giving human qualities to ordinary objects, brands can create a friendly image and connect more easily with consumers. In this way, products become more engaging and easier to remember, which may influence people’s choices.
Another reason is the inheritance of earlier artistic styles. This kind of design can be traced back to early animation, where characters were drawn with simple shapes and clear expressions. Today’s designers combine these elements with modern tastes, creating images that feel both familiar and new. As a result, such designs are accepted by people of different ages and are widely used in different industries, from food to fashion.
However, the wide use of this style has also caused problems. With the help of digital tools, many businesses can produce similar designs with little effort. In some cases, companies even rely on ready-made templates (模板) instead of original ideas. As a result, different brands may begin to look alike, making it harder for consumers to tell them apart. This may weaken the unique image that a brand tries to build.
Despite these concerns, this trend is unlikely to disappear soon. It reflects people’s desire for simple and enjoyable experiences in modern life. The key issue, therefore, is how such designs can be used in a more creative way, rather than simply copied.
8. What does the first paragraph mainly talk about
A.The popularity of cartoon-like images in different places.
B.The variety of products that now use cartoon-like designs.
C.The growing use of human-like features in product branding.
D.The bright colors and simple forms that make products noticeable.
9. What kind of designs do consumers tend to prefer
A.Those helping to ease their pressure.
B.Those stressing serious product qualities.
C.Those bearing complicated human features.
D.Those keeping with traditional formal styles.
10. What does the underlined word “inheritance” in paragraph 3 probably mean
A.Origin.
B.Copy.
C.Tradition.
D.Influence.
11. What can be inferred from Paragraph 4
A.Digital tools encourage unique design ideas.
B.Ready-made templates improve design efficiency.
C.Consumers actively support creative brand images.
D.Similar designs may weaken a brand’s unique identity.

Archaeologists working in the Nile Delta of Egypt may have discovered a structure traced back to around 2,600 years ago while testing a new technology designed to locate structures buried deep beneath the surface. The team was studying the Buto site, the ruins of an ancient city that was occupied from the Predynastic period to the Early Islamic era.
During its long history, Buto was built, destroyed, and rebuilt, and consequently has several layers, each potentially a rich source of archaeological remains. However, the oldest parts of the city are now buried beneath later ruins and thick mud deposits. This would make traditional digging difficult, time-consuming, and expensive, as archaeologists have to move large tons of debris or struggle with groundwater to reach lower levels.
The researchers were trialing an integrated approach that uses satellite radar and electrical resistivity tomography (ERT). The team started with Sentinel-1 radar satellites to identify large-scale anomalies (异常事物) from space. When it detected something of interest, they followed up with ERT, which sends electrical currents between a series of electrodes placed in the ground to create a three-dimensional model of subsurface structures based on how different materials conduct or resist electricity. This technique has been likened to an underground “CT scan”.
The scans showed that while the upper layers contained some remains from later historical periods, a large, well-defined structure lay at a depth of between three and six meters, dating back about 2,600 years. At this stage, the researchers thought it could be a large tomb or temple. Guided by these results, they carried out a small excavation (挖掘), which uncovered mudbrick walls and religious artifacts where the sensors had predicted.
The results of this study demonstrate the effectiveness of combining geophysical measurements and remote sensing data, which can accurately detect buried settlements in a complex region. The researchers now plan to expand these surveys with larger equipment to reach even deeper, older levels and they believe their integrated approach can be used to map other archaeological sites before anyone has to pick up a shovel.
12. What is the primary purpose of the technology used in the study
A.To replace traditional excavation with advanced imaging tools.
B.To uncover ancient artifacts without disturbing the site.
C.To examine the historical layers of the Buto site in detail.
D.To assist archaeologists in identifying where to excavate.
13. Why is traditional excavation at Buto considered challenging
A.The equipment required is not available for large-scale digging.
B.The site contains remains from multiple historical periods.
C.The deeper layers are hidden beneath later deposits and groundwater.
D.The mudbrick structures are too fragile to survive excavation.
14. What is the role of electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) in the research
A.It detects large-scale anomalies from satellite images.
B.It generates a 3D image of underground structures.
C.It determines whether a site contains valuable artifacts.
D.It removes obstacles that block access to deeper layers.
15. What can be inferred about the integrated approach
A.It is mainly useful for studying surface-level remains.
B.It will ultimately replace traditional excavation.
C.It combines satellite radar with ground-based methods.
D.It allows for more efficient archaeological exploration.

It was a sunny morning in late May, and the air was filled with a mix of nervousness and hope. Ethan Carter, a 17-year-old high school student, sat in the backseat of a ride-hailing car (网约车), holding his exam bag tightly. He was going to take an exam today. Next to him sat his classmate, Liam Bennett.
They had been good friends since freshman year, often studying together and encouraging each other through tough times. The ride-hailing driver, Mr Henderson, a kind middle-aged man, drove steadily, keeping an eye on the time to ensure they arrived at the exam site on schedule. Ethan took a deep breath, reviewing key knowledge in his mind, while Liam looked out the window, a little anxious yet excited about the upcoming exam.
Suddenly, without any warning, Liam let out a soft groan (呻吟) and fell forward in his seat. His eyes rolled back, and he stopped breathing. Ethan’s heart skipped a beat, and he immediately realized something was terribly wrong. “Liam! Liam, wake up!” he shouted, shaking his friend gently, but there was no response. Mr Henderson glanced at the rear-view mirror, and his face turned pale with panic.
Ethan didn’t hesitate. He had learned first aid in his school’s health class, and all the training kicked in at that moment. He quickly moved Liam into a flat position, checked his pulse and breathing, and found that Liam had suffered a sudden cardiac arrest (心脏停搏). Without wasting a second, Ethan started performing CPR — pressing firmly on Liam’s chest and giving him rescue breaths, repeating the process over and over, his hands shaking but his movements steady.
“Hold on, Liam. You’ll be okay!” Ethan whispered, his voice tight with worry but full of determination. Mr Henderson, realizing the urgency, turned on the emergency lights and honked his horn. He kept reassuring Ethan, “We’ll get to the hospital soon, kid. Keep going, you’re doing great.” Ten minutes later, they finally reached the hospital.
注意:续写词数应为150左右;按规定格式作答。
Medical staff took Liam from Ethan’s arms and rushed him to the emergency room.
