Desertification is a type of land degradation. Dry areas become drier, lose plants, and slowly turn into deserts, mainly caused by drought, deforestation and overgrazing.

What problems does desertification bring to our lives
It causes sandstorms, polluting air and disrupting traffic.
It damages farmland and leads to food shortages.
It reduces water resources.
It forces people to move away from their homes.
According to the United Nations, in the last 40 years,
desertification has been a problem across almost 30%
of the earth's land. China has some of the largest deserts
in the world and is working hard to change this situation.
In 1997, China joined the UNCCD, an international agreement to fight desertification. Since then, China has reduced its desert area by thousands of square kilometres each year. A perfect example of this is the Mu Us Desert in North-west China. Many trees were planted there. Now about 80% of the desert is green.
China has made a great start in dealing with the problem of desertification. However, all the countries in the world need to work together to protect our planet.
