When Sarah Schleper and her 18-year-old son Lasse Gaxiola take to the slopes for Team Mexico at the Milan-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics, they will make history as the first mother-son pair ever to compete together at the same Winter Games.
It is a moment that brings to mind something every parent understands deeply: our greatest influence often isn’t in words, but in the life we share. As Schleper herself reflected this week, her journey back into competitive skiing, and now alongside her son, has been shaped by family, perseverance, and a shared dream.
Sarah’s career is remarkable on its own: seven Olympic appearances, decades of World Cup experience, and a brave spirit that has taken her from the U.S. national team to representing Mexico with pride. But what makes this chapter especially meaningful is not the number of achievements on her résumé, but the chance to stand beside her son as both a competitor and a companion.
Lasse Gaxiola actually began skiing at age four. Over the years, his mother has been more than a trainer or supporter — she has been a living example of pursuing excellence with passion and modesty. Their qualification for Milan-Cortina was not just athletic but also emotional, fulfilling a dream born on the family ski slopes and shared long before either stood on an Olympic start gate.
This milestone calls to mind other families whose love and encouragement supported their children’s paths. In alpine (高山的) skiing, for instance, Olympic gold medalist Barbara Cochran raised her children on the slopes of Vermont long before her son Ryan Cochran-Siegle made his own Olympic mark — always highlighting passion over medals as the true measure of success.
That combination — support without pressure, joy without expectation — is what many parents long to offer. It is tempting (诱人的) to think that children will follow in our footsteps only if we push them; the Schleper-Gaxiola story quietly suggests the opposite. When a parent shows up with love, pride, and shared enthusiasm, whether on a snowy mountain or at the dinner table, children often want to follow.4. What makes Sarah’s current Olympic journey historically special
A.Her multiple Olympic experiences. B.Her representation for Team USA.
C.Her previous excellent achievements. D.Her joint participation with her son.
5. How did Sarah influence Lasse in skiing
A.By setting a good example for him. B.By setting progressive goals for him.
C.By giving him verbal encouragement. D.By training him with strict demands.
6. Why does the author mention Barbara and Ryan’s story
A.To demonstrate Olympic athletes’ qualities.
B.To emphasize the instructive role of parents.
C.To show a good balance of work and family.
D.To explain the advantages of sports families.
7. What message does the author want to convey in the last paragraph
A.Success is the sum of small efforts. B.Practice leads to perfect performance.
C.Passion matters more than pressure. D.Parental company builds confidence.
C
A dog jumps up to lick its owner’s face, moving its tail happily; a cat runs through the house chasing a little ball — most pet owners and animal lovers will agree that they’ve witnessed their animal friends show joy. Now, according to VICE magazine, animal researchers from universities in the United States have come together for the “joy-o-meter” (快乐测量仪) project, which is dedicated to the prospect of creating a system to analyze joy in animals.
One of the first and primary issues for the joy-o-meter project is the fact that joy is hard to define. So, the researchers created a clear definition to serve their purposes: joy as a brief yet powerful and positive emotion caused by some events, such as coming across a favorite food or meeting a friend.
The researchers began the work in chimps because they thought the odds of success were best in humankind’s closest relatives. It was discovered that chimps make a panting (喘息) sound like laughter when they play or want to show friendly feelings or calm down a situation.
But the joy-o-meter project is not limited to primates (灵长类动物). There are other researchers studying parrots in New Zealand that seem to love making snowballs and sliding down roofs in sunny, snowy weather. These birds make a soft sound when happy that spreads like laughter. Likewise, researchers have found that dolphins make a happy cry when they catch a fish, and early data suggests that these cries have a social function.
Though the joy-o-meter project is certainly worthy, there are doubts about whether joy can be measured across species, or even among different animals of the same kind. Like humans, some animals are pleased with small happy moments while others appreciate wilder forms of joy, so measuring such joy does not provide a lot of overarching information.
Still, the very fact that science now considers animal joy as a serious area of study is a step forward. There is a lot to be gained in a fuller understanding of the animal kingdom in all its complexity.8. What is the key challenge of the project
A.Analyzing animals’ diet preference. B.Confirming the standard of animals’ joy.
C.Classifying behaviors and expressions. D.Designing events to stimulate emotions.
9. Why did researchers choose chimps as the first study objects
A.They show joy clearly. B.They are easier to observe.
C.They are closest to humans. D.They express feelings like humans.
10. What does the underlined word “overarching” mean in paragraph 5
A.Specific. B.General. C.Realistic. D.Limited.
11. What is the best title for the passage
A.Explore Joy Among Animals B.Discover Joy from Raising Animals
C.The Social Function of Animals’ Joy D.Doubts about Animal Joy Research
D
Your child is struggling with math homework, frustrated with fractions (分数) and geometry problems that feel impossible to solve. The solution might not be more worksheets or tutoring sessions, but something far more enjoyable: building with Lego blocks.
A study involving over 500 students across 16 primary schools in England found that kids who participated in a six-week Lego-based program made measurable gains in both spatial (空间) thinking and mathematics compared to classmates who received traditional instruction. It was regular classroom teachers, not the researchers, who led the program during normal school hours.
The research team, led by Dr. Emily Farran of the University of Surrey, created the SPACE program, short for Spatial Cognition to Enhance mathematical learning. Instead of relying on drill-and-practice worksheets, the program had 6-and 7-year-olds spend 30 minutes twice a week building Lego models from picture-based instructions.
Each session followed a consistent routine. Students watched a short video that introduced a themed story, then worked individually to build up to six Lego models using step-by-step visual guides. Accuracy was emphasized over speed, and the children took each model apart before starting the next.
Of the 409 children who completed the SPACE program and the 104 children in the control group who received normal lessons, those in the Lego-building group showed statistically significant improvement in their ability to mentally rotate (旋转) objects. This skill — thinking about how shapes look when turned — is a key part of spatial thinking.
They also performed better on math assessments that covered geometry and problem-solving tasks. When children work with shapes, graphs, or fractions, they rely on spatial visualization, the skill that the Lego program appears to strengthen.
The study’s exciting findings can reach far beyond the 16 classrooms involved. “Our findings have implications for school curricula where spatial thinking is largely absent; a spatialized mathematics curriculum could raise children’s mathematics achievement,” the researchers write. They suggest that future programs might integrate spatial thinking more fully into math instruction, rather than leave it in special sessions. That kind of integrated approach could potentially lead to even greater gains.12. How was the Lego-based program different from traditional math instruction
A.It was conducted after school. B.It used repeated practice sheets.
C.It focused on hands-on building. D.It valued speed more than accuracy.
13. Why can Lego-building improve math learning
A.It raises students’ interest in geometry study.
B.It helps students build strong number sense.
C.It makes abstract concepts easier to understand.
D.It enhances students’ spatial visualization ability.
14. What is the researchers’ suggestion in the last paragraph about
A.Potential application of the findings. B.Future directions of the study.
C.Need to integrate math into real life. D.Choice of cooperative learning.
15. What is the main purpose of the passage
A.To promote the Lego building program.
B.To compare two different teaching methods.
C.To explain the application value of math.
D.To introduce a new way to improve math learning.

Imagine waking up refreshed with a body that moves easily and feeling the glow of mental peace, and the confidence of strength. This isn’t just a fantasy for wellness experts or athletes. It becomes real when you decide to commit to a healthy lifestyle.
Health begins in the body. The human body is a complex, highly organized machine that works nonstop for us. It is through it that you experience every moment of your life, from laughter with friends to the quiet act of breathing. 16 Regaining physical health is not about aesthetic (审美的) ideals; it’s about honoring the incredible systems that keep us alive.
17 Your body runs on what you feed it, and modern science has consistently shown that diets rich in whole foods — vegetables, fruits, whole grains and healthy fats — support longevity and vigour. Processed foods, high in refined sugars, saturated (饱和的) fats, and artificial additives, break this balance, causing body stress and other health problems.
Equally vital is movement. 18 It longs for motion. Regular physical activity — whether it’s dancing, hiking, swimming, or strength training — improves circulation, strengthens muscles and bones, and protects the brain. More than that, it brings joy. Exercise releases happy chemicals and lifts mood. It’s like moving medicine.
Sleep, too, is a crucial part of health that cannot be ignored. Long-term lack of sleep damages memory, increases stress, weakens immunity, and speeds up aging. Good sleep habits — consistent bedtime routines, a dark quiet room, and screen-free evenings — help your body’s natural clock. 19
Finally, there’s staying properly hydrated (水分摄入) — the often-overlooked keystone of wellness. Water supports every function, from digestion to cleaning the body. 20 Drinking enough clean water each day is one of the most powerful ways to support your body’s natural balance.
A.Nutrition plays a central role.
B.A healthy body is all about balance.
C.This allows your body to repair, grow, and recharge at night.
D.You don’t have to go to the gym to do exercise to stay active.
E.Even a small lack of it can cloud thinking and reduce energy.
F.Your body was not designed to sit for hours in front of screens.
G.Yet for many, this machine is taken for granted until something breaks.

Cultural heritage, including historical sites, traditional practices and artifacts, is a precious treasure that offers a window into our shared history and becomes 36 essential part of a nation’s identity, 37 (influence) the values, beliefs, and sense of belonging. The preservation of cultural heritage is not just about protecting artifacts or sites; it is about safeguarding the stories, identities, and values 38 define humanity.
However, living in a rapidly developing world, we often face the conflict between heritage preservation and social progress. Cities are eager 39 (construct)tall buildings and new roads to meet modern needs, and many regions seek to develop tourism for 40 (economy) growth. Blind development will destroy cultural relics forever, while preserving heritage without proper development will make it lose 41 (connect) with modern life and gradually fade away.
The solution lies 42 finding a wise balance between the two. For example, many ancient towns 43 (regular) restore and maintain historic buildings, and organize special exhibitions as well as cultural events to raise public awareness of the significance of heritage preservation while developing sustainable tourism. Besides, advanced technologies like 3D scanning 44 (adopt) so far, helping record the details of cultural relics for better preservation.
Cultural heritage is a precious legacy (遗产) that reflects shared humanity. By preserving and promoting cultural heritage, we can help maintain cultural diversity, shape a sense of identity, and ensure that future generations can appreciate and learn from the treasures 45 (hand) down by our ancestors.

When I was four or five, I lived with my parents on the construction base where my father worked. As part of the Christmas celebrations, there was the usual Christmas party for the kids of the families on the base.
This involved an evening of lively partying, delicious food like mini sandwiches and candy canes, cheerful dancing to Christmas carols, fun games with small prizes, and the most exciting part, a visit from Santa
Santa would sit at the front of the dance floor on a red chair, and kids would sit with their parents around the room. Santa would pull a gift out of the big green box beside him and read the name out, and the lucky child would go over, take the gift, have their photo taken with Santa, and go back to their parents with a big smile.
Imagine being the child who was the last to be called, sitting there quietly and watching as everyone else got their turn, the anticipation building up little by little, waiting anxiously to be called. Now be that child — the one whose name still hadn’t been called when Santa reached the end of the gifts in his bag — literally turned it inside out, said, “And that’s it”, wished us all a Merry Christmas, and exited stage left.
That year, I was that child. It had never happened before, but someone had messed up really badly. As the realisation dawned on me that Santa had forgotten me, I could still remember the voice “Oh, no” from my father behind me.
I didn’t remember much about what happened next — probably cried my eyes out, my heart broken by the disappointment of missing out on Santa’s gift — but right after the party, we ended up meeting Santa in a quiet corridor near the party room.注意:

Santa was still in his red suit, wearing a look of regret and apology on his face. Without waiting for my parents to speak, he knelt down gently, wiping the tears from my cheeks with his warm gloved hand. "Oh, my dear little one," he said in a soft, reassuring voice, the same voice that had filled the dance floor with joy just moments before," I am so sorry that I missed you.” He explained that he made a terrible mistake and no child should ever feel left out on Christmas. His words carried no excuses, only genuine sorrow for having overlooked me.
Santa reached into the pocket of his suit, and pulled out a small, neatly wrapped gift "This is just for you," he smiled, placing it in my trembling hands. He sincerely told me that Christmas isn’ t
just about getting gifts—it' s about feeling loved, cared for and cherished. As he spoke, he pulled me into a gentle hug, and at that moment, all the sadness and disappointment melted away. I feltwork, safe, and seen —like the most important child in the whole world.
