First grader Gavin Clampett was diagnosed (诊断) with Tourette’s Syndrome at the age of five. Due to the
neurological (神经的) disorder, he always experiences a variety of sudden uncontrolled movements and sounds.
The uncontrollable actions mean that he often gets dirty looks from strangers in public and kids make cruel
comments on the school bus and in class. In an effort to prevent the unkind comments, Gavin’s mother, 32-year-old
Rebecca Clampett helped him make a video with his sister Brynn, nine, and played it to pupils at his school to help
them understand the condition.
In the video, which Rebecca also shared on YouTube, Gavin’s sister Brynn starts by answering the question
“What is Tourette’s Syndrome ” She says, “It is a neurological disorder, which means it affects the brain so that a
person makes unwanted movements. These are called tics (抽搐), but not like a tic that is found outside. These tics
can be very noticeable or not very noticeable, quiet or loud.”
School can be hard for all kids. That can be even harder for children like Gavin because they have to face
people who laugh at them every single day. “I feel like my brother and every other kid who has Tourette’s
Syndrome are brave. So be kind to them and don’t treat them differently because they are just like you”, Brynn says
in the video.
Gavin concludes, “Everyone could play with someone. Some people think I can’t because I’m different but
actually I can. Some are afraid that I will say dirty words, but actually I won’t. The disease bothers me a little, but
I’m OK.”
24. What can we know about Tourette’s Syndrome
A. It can be treated with drugs.
B. It is usually found at an early age.
C. People with it will say dirty words.
D. People with it can make uncontrolled sounds.

As more offices realize that sitting all day long is actually pretty terrible for health and study, schools are
trying to come up with creative solutions to keep students active. Ward Elementary School in Winston, North
Carolina, is filling traditional classrooms with exercise balls or standing desks.
Scott Ertl, a teacher at the school, came up with the idea while he was exercising and reading at the gym.
Believing it would be a fun way to make students more active, he placed one bike in the corner of his classroom
and encouraged students to use it.
It was so popular that Ertl decided to add more bikes and offer the Read and Ride program to the entire school.
Today Ward Elementary School has a special exercise room filled with exercise bikes that can be used by students
while completing their daily reading tasks. As they ride, they read.
Besides making reading more fun, the program also helps students exercise at a comfortable pace without the
stress that comes with regular sports-related activities. It is also a perfect way to work off energy during days when
the weather is not suitable to outdoor activities. It also has solved the health problem of sitting down all day.
What matters most is the program’s effect on how they learn. A year after Read and Ride was introduced at
Ward Elementary School, students actively participating in the program showed an amazing 83% reading ability.
Those who had not taken advantage of the exercise bikes tested at a much lower, 41%.
Though the improvement in study achievement cannot all be the result of programs like Read and Ride,
experts believe they are a very great and important contributor. That’s because studies have shown that physical
activity stimulates (刺激) brain cells (细胞) and assists to prepare it for learning. As word of the difference made
by this easy-to-start exercise program spreads, don’t be surprised to find schools across the country apply “Read
and Ride” for their students.
28. What inspired Ertl to start the Read and Ride program in Ward Elementary School
A. Students’ repeated requests. B. Scott Ertl’s idea during exercise.
C. Bikes’ popularity in the school. D. Other schools’ successful examples.
29. How did the program develop after its first success
A. It attracted many teachers. B. It included more sports activities.
C. It became a national program. D. It grew into a special exercise room.
30. What is one of the benefits of “Read and Ride”
A. It cuts school sports costs.
B. It completely solves students’ health problems.
C. It increases students’ physical grades.
D. It greatly improves students’ reading abilities.
31. What does the underlined word “contributor” in the last paragraph probably mean
A. Helper. B. Volunteer. C. Promoter. D. Competitor.
D
People often grumble that plastics are too durable (耐用的). Water bottles, shopping bags, and other trash
litter the planet because plastics are everywhere and don’t break down easily. But some plastic materials change
over time. They crack and melt into sludge, all of which creates huge headaches for institutions, such as museums,
trying to preserve culturally important objects.
Until recently, museums only have to worry about traditional materials. “We know how to approach the
restoration of paintings, books, and materials like wood, metals, and glass,” says Anna Laganà, a research specialist
at the Getty Conservation Institute. “But for plastics, our knowledge is still limited.” Tonkin, now a doctoral
researcher in fashion conservation at Nottingham Trent University, agrees. “We’re now trying to figure out how to
conserve plastics,” she says.
Nearly every museum in the world has plastic items, and even well-cared-for objects can fall apart alarmingly
quickly. Museums are doing everything they can to save culturally important items from similar fates. But
preservation of plastics will likely get harder. Old objects continue to decline. Worse, biodegradable plastics,
designed to fall apart easily, are increasingly common.
We now live in an age of plastic, and what we decide to collect today, and what we decide to preserve, will
have a strong impact on how we’ll be seen in the future. Future archaeologists looking at what’s left from the 21st
century will probably find lots of poisonous waste, along with plenty of plastic trash. But if museum preservation
efforts succeed, maybe those scholars will also see that plastic items today can be culturally meaningful — and
even cherished.
32. What are two totally different features of plastics mentioned in Paragraph 1
A. Popular but rarely recycled.
B. Harmless to nature but harmful to humans.
C. Easy to make but hard to clean.
D. Some long-lasting but others easy-to-degrade.
33. What can we infer from Anna Laganà and Tonkin’s words
A. Museums lack expertise in plastic preservation.
B. Traditional restoration makes plastic conservation needless.
C. Plastic conservation in fashion is completely solved.
D. The Getty Institute leads plastic preservation research.
34. What is the main role of Paragraph 3
A. Explain why plastic preservation is harder than traditional ones.
B. List ways museums protect plastic cultural objects.
C. Show plastic items are common in global museums.
D. Stress the growing challenges of plastic preservation.
35. What is the most suitable title of the passage
A. The Durability of Plastics. B. The Challenge of Preserving Plastics.
C. The Problem of Plastic Trash. D. The Future of Plastic Items.

Getting Along Well with Parents
Parent-child relationship is one of the most important relationships in our growth. But sometimes, we may
have small conflicts with our parents because of different ideas. In fact, as long as we master some simple methods,
we can make the relationship more harmonious. Here are some practical tips to help you get along better with your
parents.
36
When your parents talk to you, put down your phone or books, look them in the eyes, and listen to them
carefully until they finish. This shows that you pay attention to what they are saying. Don’t interrupt them halfway
or rush to argue. Listening not only helps you understand your parents’ thoughts, but also makes them feel
respected.
Take the Initiative to Share Your Life
Parents always care about our daily life, but they may not know how to ask. 37 For example, when
you get home, tell them interesting things at school, your interactions with classmates, or small difficulties you
meet in study. Taking the initiative to share can shorten the distance between you, making parents feel you are
willing to communicate with them instead of shutting them out.
Understand Parents from Another Perspective
Sometimes we feel that parents don’t understand us, but on the other hand, we may not think from their side
either. 38 Their requirements may be a bit strict, but their starting point is always to make us better. When
you doubt your parents’ actions, try to think: “If I were a parent, what would I do ” This may help reduce many
unnecessary conflicts.
Express Your Ideas Politely
If your parents’ ideas are different from yours, don’t lose your temper or resist in silence. 39 For
example, use sentences like “Mom/Dad, I know you care about me, but I think...” This way, you show respect for
them and clearly express your own views. A polite way of communication is easier for parents to accept your ideas
and avoid the escalation of conflicts.
Show Care Through Small Actions
Besides verbal communication, some small actions can also make parents feel your love. 40 For
example, take the initiative to help Mom wash the dishes, give Dad a back rub, or say “Happy Birthday” to them on
their special day. These little things are simple but can warm their hearts.
A. It’s important to keep calm and talk to them politely.
B. Learn to Listen Carefully.
C. They have more life experience and just want to protect you.
D. You don’t need to do big things to make them happy.
E. So take the first step to share your life with them.
F. Parents are always the people who love us the most in the world.
G. Try to talk to your parents regularly.

I have never been a fan of giving speeches. Every time I stand in front of the class, my legs start shaking and
my mind goes blank. But my teacher once told us, “If you can’t express yourself, how will others understand you ”
She had a point, though I wished she didn’t.
Last Monday, our English teacher Mrs Green announced that every student would take turns giving a short
speech in class. When she said my turn would be the following week, my heart sank a little. The topic she gave was
“a lesson from daily life”. I quickly copied it down carelessly on a piece of paper and put the note deep into my
backpack, telling myself that I had plenty of time to prepare it later.
The weekend arrived, and I threw myself into fun with my family and myself. We rode bikes through the park,
played board games after dinner, and I buried myself in cartoons for hours. My sister challenged me to video
games, and Dad taught me a new card trick. I just relaxed and had fun. Every time the task crossed my mind, I
pushed it away, telling myself I still had plenty of time. I was too busy enjoying the moment to worry about
anything serious.
Before I knew it, Sunday night arrived. Panic surged (激增) through me when I realized I had not prepared
anything at all. I searched my mind for ideas but came up with nothing. I tried to write a few sentences, but
time slipped away too quickly. Monday morning came in the blink of an eye, and I still had no finished
speech. At that moment, I deeply understood — I had wasted all my time playing, and now it was already
too late to get fully ready.

写作范文
Dear Tom,
I hope this letter finds you well. Since World Book and Copyright Day is approaching on April 23rd, I’m glad
to share a book recommendation with you.
The book I’d like to recommend is The Little Prince. Although it is often labeled as a children’s book, it
carries profound wisdom for readers of all ages. My reasons for recommendation are simple. First, the story uses
simple language but explores deep themes. Second, it’s a short read, perfect for a busy student like you. I believe it
will bring you both comfort and inspiration.
Let me know what you think if you get a chance to read it!
Best wishes,
Li Hua
读后续写
Paragraph 1:
When my name was called, I walked to the front with my heart racing and my palms sweating. I opened
my mouth, but my mind went completely blank. I had thought I could just make it up on the spot, yet now I stood
there, silent and frozen. Some classmates began to whisper, and I felt my face burn with embarrassment. I tried to
say something, but the words came out broken and messy. After what felt like an hour, Mrs Green gently smiled
and asked me to sit down. I returned to my seat, wishing the floor would swallow me up.
Paragraph 2:
That experience taught me a lesson I would never forget. From that day on, I started preparing for
everything ahead of time. I wrote down my ideas as soon as they came to me and practiced my speeches in front of
a mirror until I could say them smoothly. When my next turn came, I stood on the stage with confidence, my voice
steady and my thoughts clear. The applause I received felt truly earned. I finally understood that success doesn’t
come from luck, but from the quiet effort we put in before we step into the spotlight.

M: There’s a good chance for you to come to work for this company. Thank you for coming. We’ll let you know
the result as soon as possible.
Text 10
W: The National Park we will visit is located in the desert just north of our city. Like any hike of this nature,
you should be prepared for the adventure in the desert. First, hike with a partner for safety. I enjoy hiking with
family members and close friends. Second, carry a cell phone with you. However, keep in mind that you might not
get any signal in some places, so don’t depend on it. Third, be sure to have the right clothing and shoes or boots
for the hike. Light, breathable clothing is the best during the summer, along with the hat and strong hiking
shoes. Fourth, carry plenty of water. Having a few snacks can give you energy, too. Fifth, take a small first-aid box
with you, particularly on longer hikes, in case you get injured. Sixth, pack a detailed map of the area you’re hiking,
along with a compass or a GPS to locate your position. And finally, take nothing home with you except pictures
and memories. You can protect these areas by leaving all rocks, flowers, and other objects for future visitors.
