Dressed in a neat suit and wearing a high ponytail, Tan Ting, a 33-year-old lawyer, is livestreaming (直播) in a studio in Southwest China’s Chongqing city, with confidence and professionalism. The only unusual thing is that there is no sound in this livestream.
Tan believes that the popularization of legal knowledge for the hearing-impaired (听力受损的) is her life’s mission. In addition to delivering lectures on short-video sharing platforms, Tan is also readily available to offer relevant assistance, entirely free of charge, to the hearing-impaired through other messaging apps.
Sometimes, she needs to answer more than 10 video calls in a day to help hearing-impaired people solve legal problems, ranging from household quarrels to financial conflicts. Since the communication is based on sign language, it can often take Tan 30 or 40 minutes to figure things out. Yet she has never complained about her voluntary work.
“I’m a hearing-impaired person myself, so I know their feelings very well. For people with full hearing, it’s challenging to deal with legal matters. So, when it comes to people with hearing impairments, it’s even more difficult for them to access legal help,” Tan says, adding that she lost her hearing in a medical accident when she was only 8 years old and communicates with others through voice transcription (转写) apps.
After graduating from Chongqing Normal University in 2017, Tan joined a law firm as an assistant to Tang Shuai, a lawyer who uses sign language to defend hearing-impaired clients. “I wish that more lawyers would learn sign language and promote legal knowledge among hearing-impaired citizens,” says Tang Shuai, explaining the reason why he employed Tan and 29 other hearing-impaired people to work as his assistants in 2017.
4. What does Tan Ting see as her mission
A.Making money by providing legal advice online.
B.Working as a professional assistant in a top law firm.
C.Spreading legal knowledge among the hearing-impaired.
D.Becoming a famous livestreamer on short-video platforms.
5. Why does Tan Ting help the hearing-impaired without complaints
A.Because she gets a high salary from the law firm for this voluntary work.
B.Because she wants to gain fame by doing livestreams and giving lectures.
C.Because she is hearing-impaired herself and fully relates to their difficulties.
D.Because she is required to offer relevant assistance and solve legal problems.
6. Which of the following best describes Tan Ting
A.Professional and empathetic.
B.Focused and respected.
C.Responsible but overconfident.
D.Warm-hearted but inexperienced.
7. What can we infer from Paragraph 5
A.Tang Shuai was the first lawyer to help the hearing-impaired in China.
B.Tang Shuai is committed to improving legal access for the hearing-impaired.
C.Tan Ting was the only hearing-impaired assistant working for Tang Shuai.
D.Tan Ting became a top lawyer soon after she graduated from university.

On November 4, 2025, the astronauts aboard the Tiangong space station spotted cracks (裂缝) on their return capsule’s viewport window. Suspecting that they were caused by tiny pieces of space debris (残骸), the ground team soon carried out analyses and experiments, and finally decided that they posed safety risks and delayed the return. On November 14, the crew safely landed on Earth aboard the Shenzhou XXI spacecraft, completing an extended 204-day mission.
Space debris, also known as orbital debris, includes non-functioning satellites, defunct rockets, and broken pieces from collisions (碰撞) or explosions. This junk poses a severe risk because even small pieces, when moving at orbital speeds, carry enough energy to disable a spacecraft or destroy a satellite. The problem has worsened in recent years due to the rise of large satellite constellations (星座). Each new satellite increases the chance of collisions, leading to the generation of more debris — an effect known as the Kessler Syndrome, first proposed by NASA scientist Donald Kessler in 1978.
The Tiangong incident is not an uncommon case. In 2021, a piece of debris from a 2007 anti-satellite test narrowly missed the International Space Station, forcing its crew to take shelter in their docked (停泊的) spacecraft. “We’re entering a phase where space operations are becoming increasingly risky,” says Holger Krag, head of the European Space Agency’s Space Safety Programme.
Several solutions have been put forward to tackle the debris problem. These include active debris removal missions, which use robots or nets to capture and deorbit junk; designing satellites to be more easily deorbited at the end of their missions; and carrying out stricter international regulations on space activities. However, these measures face significant technical, financial, and political challenges.
The Tiangong astronauts returned safely to Earth, but their experience serves as a wake-up call. As more countries and private companies venture into space, the need for a comprehensive, global approach to space debris management has never been more urgent. Without action, the very orbits that enable modern life — from GPS navigation to weather forecasting — could become too dangerous to use.
8. What can be learned about the incident in Paragraph 1
A.It was first found by the ground team.
B.It led to the failure of the space mission.
C.It caused the delay of the astronauts’ return.
D.It was proved to be caused by space debris.
9. How does Holger Krag feel about the present space operation
A.Optimistic. B.Indifferent. C.Concerned. D.Desperate.
10. What can be inferred from the last paragraph about the debris problem
A.Developed countries should be accountable for the problem.
B.Effective measures have been taken to tackle the problem.
C.Humans will be incapable of navigating ways by using GPS.
D.Orbits used for critical services may face increasing risks.
11. What might the author continue talking about
A.How astronauts return to earth safely.
B.How to manage space debris effectively.
C.Some other crises caused by space debris.
D.Some threats facing us related to space safety.

Sleep is far more than a period of rest — it is a vital biological process that impacts memory, mood, immune function, and overall health. Yet for millions of people worldwide, various sleep disorders often remain neglected. At Emory University’s Center for Sleep and Circadian Neurobiology (CSCN), researchers are combining cutting-edge neuroscience, genetics, and clinical care to change that situation.
Founded in 2018, CSCN brings together experts from diverse fields to tackle sleep’s most complex questions. One key focus is the role of the brain’s “sleep-wake switch”, a group of neurons (神经元) in the brain that regulates transitions between sleep and wakefulness. Using optogenetics, a technique that uses light to control brain cells, researchers have identified how these neurons become disordered in sleeplessness, opening new paths for targeted therapies that avoid the side effects of traditional sleep medications.
Another area of innovation is the study of sleep and memory consolidation (巩固). Emory neuro-scientists have found that deep sleep plays a critical role in strengthening new memories and integrating them into existing knowledge networks. In a study published in Nature Neuroscience, the team used functional MRI (fMRI) to show that participants who slept soundly after learning a new skill had 30% better memory than those who stayed awake, even when tested a week later. This research could transform how students study, how athletes train, and how clinicians treat memory disorders.
A growing focus is the intersection of sleep and mental health. Studies at CSCN have shown that long-term sleep loss can worsen symptoms of anxiety and depression, while improving sleep quality can reduce suicidal (自杀的) thoughts by up to 40% in individuals at risk. Dr. Sarah Lee, a leading sleep psychologist at the center, explains, “Sleep is a foundation for emotional resilience. Our work is proving that treating sleep disorders should be a priority in mental health care.”
As Emory’s sleep research continues to expand, the future looks bright. For anyone who has ever struggled to sleep, these advances offer hope: Soon, the mysteries of the night may be fully unlocked, and restful sleep could become a reality for all.
12. What is the function of optogenetics in the study according to the passage
A.To control brain cells to cure sleeplessness.
B.To know how sleep loss disturbs neural order.
C.To avoid side effects of traditional sleeping pills.
D.To make the sleep-wake switch operate smoothly.
13. What did Emory neuroscientists discover about deep sleep
A.It helps the brain forget unimportant details.
B.Its effect on memory fades away after a week.
C.It makes learning new skills faster the next day.
D.It enhances people’s ability to recall new things.
14. What does the underlined word “intersection” in Paragraph 4 mean
A.Connection. B.Separation. C.Difference. D.Conflict.
15. What is the main idea of the passage
A.Effective ways to treat sleeping problems.
B.People’s neglect of sleep disorders in the world.
C.CSCN’s remarkable progress in sleep research.
D.A promising research related to the causes of sleeplessness.

Five years ago, I visited Hebian village in Yunnan Province as part of a poverty alleviation (缓解) program. It was there that I saw how my professor, Li Xiaoyun, and his team helped lift the community out of poverty by 2020. That experience left me with a lasting question: once poverty 36 (shake) off, what comes next
In the summer of 2025, sixty of us from thirteen countries came together to study global development and rural revitalization (振兴) 37 during a field trip to Manluanzhan village, Yunnan, I found part of the answer. 38 (close) involved there again, Professor Li’s team have focused on sustainable village 39 (construct) and community-led development. Today, villagers not only enjoy self-sufficiency but have also got access 40 modern comforts. The village even has a modern outdoor swimming pool, large enough 41 (host) group activities. We found it hard to imagine that this community 42 (struggle) to make ends meet.
Impressively, when I tried my hand at the traditional art of paper-making there, I felt the flow of a craft 43 (pass) down for generations. It was more than a lesson in technique — it was about continuity, culture, and respect for the past. I felt part of something bigger — 44 living, breathing community.
Manluanzhan’s journey from poverty to growth was no accident. 45 impressed me most was that villagers were not passive receivers of aid. The community itself carried the project forward. I left Manluanzhan with new knowledge, but also with a sense of responsibility.

The sun hung low over the small coastal town of Brighton, painting the sky with brilliant orange and pink. When Lila, a 17-year-old high school student, walked toward the bus stop, she noticed an old man sitting on a bench nearby. With a faint smile on his face, the old man looked lonely in his eyes, as if he was waiting for someone. She was in a hurry to meet her friends, but something in the man’s gaze (目光) made her stop.
“Excuse me, sir,” she said softly. “Are you waiting for someone The last bus to the downtown area will leave in 10 minutes.”
The old man looked up, surprised by her greeting. “Ah, a kind young lady,” he said with a gentle voice. “I’m waiting for my granddaughter. She promised to meet me here today. I wanted to give her this box as a gift.” He patted the box gently, as if it held the most precious treasure in the world.
With each passing minute, his posture seemed to shrink a little. His fingers, which had been resting lightly on the box, now gripped it more tightly. Lila noticed his gaze, once bright with hope, begin to dim. Just then, the sound of a bus horn (喇叭) rang out in the distance, signaling that the bus Lila had been waiting for was arriving. Looking at the old man, Lila thought about her friends, who were already waiting for her at the café. But with the old man’s hopeful eyes fading a little, she made a decision.
“Sir, I can stay with you for a while,” she said.
The old man’s face lit up. “Thank you, my dear. That’s very kind of you.”
They sat together in silence, watching the sun sink lower and lower. Five minutes passed, then ten, but still no sign of his granddaughter. Suddenly, the old man let out a soft sigh and stood up. “I think I should go home,” he said, his voice full of disappointment.
As he turned to leave, he accidentally dropped the box. Letters scattered (散落) across the ground. Lila quickly knelt down to pick them up, and when she handed them back to the old man, she noticed a small photo of a smiling young girl inside the box. It was her best friend, Mia.
