Covering huge lands of Chile and Argentina in the Southern Hemisphere, Patagonia is heaven for fans of outdoor adventures.
El Calafate, Argentina
Every day, groups of buses depart El Calafate for the Perito Moreno glacier — an accessible icy sight, and one of the world’s few advancing glaciers. A series of boardwalks lead to various viewpoints that allow you to be amazed at this shining, blue-white wall of ice.
Futaleufú, Chile
Imagine it: you and the rest of the rafting crew are waiting for the signal from the rafting guide to row like your life depends on it. Huge river waves are hitting the boat and white-water spray showers you head to foot. You wipe the water out of your eyes and enjoy the sunshine when people in the Northern Hemisphere suffer from the freezing cold, and there are numerous guesthouses where you can base yourself.
Cueva de las Manos, Argentina
In a hidden canyon, reachable by tour or your own wheels, a boardwalk leads you past a vast overhanging rock face, decorated with ancient rock art. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is one of the most famous rock art sites in South America, with over 800 outlines of human hands and feet of wildlife.
Punta Tombo, Argentina
You smell the penguins before you see them. The presence of nearly a million Magellanic penguins — some hiding underground, some going fishing in the sea, others standing around — is a powerful effect on your senses. In Mexico City’s Polanco neighborhood, Catia Lattouf has turned her apartment into a clinic for sick, injured, or baby hummingbirds. Over the past decade, though lacking formal training, she has nursed hundreds of these tiny birds back to health.
Lattouf, a 73-year-old French literature enthusiast, has become a go-to resource for bird lovers across Mexico and Latin America. The shelter converted from apartment to clinic supports more formal institutions like the Iztacala campus of Mexico’s National Autonomous University, which sometimes refers cases to her due to limited resources.
Lattouf began caring for hummingbirds a year after surviving colon cancer in 2011. It started with one hummingbird that had an eye injury. A veterinarian (兽医) friend encouraged her to try to help it. She named it Gucci after the brand of the glasses case she kept it in. The bird became her inseparable companion and helped pull her out of the sadness and loneliness she experienced after her husband’s death followed by her own struggle with cancer. “It wrote me a new life,” she said.
Lattouf never turns away a bird. Together with her partner Cecilia Santos, they care for the birds in long days that stretch from 5 A.m. into the night. Most of the hummingbirds are in the bedroom where Lattouf sleeps until they are strong enough to fly and feed themselves. Then she moves them to a neighboring room to prepare them for release in a wooded area on the city’s south side.
Many of them do manage to return to the wild, but the ones who die under Lattouf’s care are buried near her building between small plants. Despite threats to hummingbirds from constant construction projects that replace flower gardens with concrete, Lattouf remains optimistic and hopes other bird lovers will plant more flowers to feed these great pollinators (传粉者).
4. What does the underlined word “converted” in Paragraph 2 probably mean
A.Reduced.
B.Transformed.
C.Protected.
D.Simplified.
5. Why did Lattouf start caring for hummingbirds
A.She wanted to honor her late husband.
B.Raising birds was her childhood dream.
C.She needed a hobby after surviving cancer.
D.A friend asked her to help with an injured bird.
6. What is one of the threats to hummingbirds according to the last paragraph
A.Increased use of chemicals in gardens.
B.Climate change leading to loss of habitat.
C.Building projects replacing flower gardens.
D.Pollution of water sources in their natural environment.
7. What can be inferred about Catia Lattouf based on the text
A.She is unfriendly and only works with birds.
B.She is wealthy as she keeps birds in her bedroom.
C.She is positive and has found a new purpose in life.
D.She is qualified as she has received formal training in bird care.
C
Reducing calorie intake may lead to a thinner body and a longer life. People usually think it is because of weight loss and metabolic (新陈代谢) changes from eating less. But a recent study on diet limits in laboratory animals challenges this traditional view.
To study how diet works, researchers observed 960 mice. These mice were genetically different, like humans. Some mice had calorie-limited diets, some fasted (禁食的) regularly, and others ate as they liked. It was found that diets with restricted calories caused weight loss and metabolic changes. However, factors like immune health, genes, and the body’s ability to bear stress seem to better explain the link between fewer calories and a longer life.
Gary Churchill, a mouse researcher, said, “Metabolic changes are important, but they don’t directly lead to a longer life.” Other scientists think this shows how complicated the body’s response to calorie reduction.
Cutting calories by 40% made the mice live the longest on average. But fasting regularly and less strict calorie limits also increased lifespan (寿命). As is known, dieting mice have positive metabolic changes such as less body fat and lower blood sugar.
However, the effects of diet limits on metabolism and lifespan didn’t always go together. Surprisingly, mice that lost the most weight on a low-calorie diet sometimes died younger than those that lost less. This means that more than just metabolism affects how the body reacts to fewer calories. Immune health and red-blood-cell function were important for a longer life. Also, the body’s overall ability to handle stress was important.
The findings may change how scientists think about diet limits in humans. In a human trial of a low-calorie diet, researchers found that it reduced metabolic rates. But the mouse data suggests that metabolic measures may only show “health span”, not lifespan. Scientist Edmma notes that the study needs more evidence and warns not to directly use mouse results for humans, but he also admits that the study shows healthspan and lifespan are different.
8. How was the study conducted
A.By comparing mice with human beings.
B.By developing the feeding habits of mice.
C.By conducting experiment on different animals.
D.By adopting the controlled experiment method.
9. What surprising result does the study reveal
A.All mice live longer under diet restriction.
B.Dieting mice have positive metabolic changes.
C.Regular fasting have little impact on the lifespan of mice.
D.Mice with significant weight loss can have shorter lives.
10. What is scientist Edmma’s attitude toward the study
A.Cautious.
B.Critical.
C.Optimistic.
D.Uncaring.
11. What’s the best title for the text
A.Metabolism: The Key to a Longer Life
B.Less Food, Longer Life: The Simple Solution
C.Diet and Lifespan: It’s More than Metabolism
D.Calorie Restriction: Weight Loss and Metabolic Change
D
For years, we’ve been teaching a class on music and the mind. At the start of each semester, we’ve asked the students to complete a survey on their favorite songs and artists. Students’ favorite songs and artists get longer and more varied each year and their playlists barely overlap (重叠).
Indeed, listening to music is a deeply private and personal experience nowadays and even more so with the introduction of the iPod and smartphones. When teenagers listen to music via streaming, artificial intelligence and social media platforms team up to suggest personalized playlists for them.
Some young people feel that AI generated playlists make them exposed to something dull. Their playlists are populated with songs and artists they’ve never heard of before, yet they all sound similar. In the past, they might not have noticed such a situation. Their musical consumption was narrowly dominated by the“Top-40” artists. However, AI generated playlists have changed this, since a wider range of music is available. If they think their AI influenced playlists are unappealing, they still have the ability to search for new music. Just because AI can suggest songs, it doesn’t prevent them researching and discovering music on their own, or sharing playlists. Anything that exists, they can find. The store is always open.
Music listening and preferences play an important role in young people’s transition (过渡) from childhood to adulthood, two seemingly opposing but vital processes: forming a unique identity, while at the same time becoming part of a community. However, AI generated playlists have the potential to challenge this transition. So does AI make it easier to differentiate the self, but harder to bond with others
Fears of new technologies are commonplace. For example, the decline of scheduled network TV erased lots of common ground for discussion, so will 50 million Americans ever again tune in to watch the series ending of a TV show, as they did for Friends in 2004
If AI is, indeed, contributing to the transformation of teenagers’ shared listening experiences, then AI playlists are more than a convenient way to discover their next favorites. They are a revolution worth paying attention to.
12. What makes teenagers’ music listening experiences more private
A.The popularization of music education.
B.The lack of interaction among teenagers.
C.The easy access to musical instruments.
D.The extensive use of electronic devices.
13. What is Paragraph 3 mainly about concerning AI generated playlists
A.Their advantages.
B.Their accessibility.
C.Their limitations.
D.Their development.
14. What challenge may AI generated playlists present
A.They result in the decline of network TV.
B.They prevent teens choosing similar songs.
C.They make identifying oneself impossible.
D.They provide less for teens to communicate.
15. Why does the author mention Friends in Paragraph 5
A.To show the potential social influence of AI.
B.To tell us the predictability of new technology.
C.To explain people’s willingness to accept AI.
D.To emphasize its popularity among Americans.

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Wildlife documentaries are known for offering breathtaking images of animals in their natural habitats. You might be thinking that these shows offer a totally real portrayal (描绘) of these animals-an objective window into their lives as they hunt, rest and raise their young. 16 While the images we see are filmed on location, many of the sounds are recorded in a sound studio and added to the programs later by human “Foley artists (拟音师)”.
17 Usually, documentary filmmakers can film their subjects from a great distance, but they typically can’t get close enough to capture clear sounds without disturbing the animals. 18 There will probably be background noises such as crew members chatting or walking around if sounds are recorded on location. In other cases, the animals might make sounds of a frequency or volume that most microphones simply can’t capture clearly.
“Foley artists” will use a variety of tools to simulate (模拟) the sounds made by animals. And most of them will create the close-up sounds of animals chewing or yawning with their own mouths. These sounds are created as the artist watches the videos, making sure they perfectly match the actions they’re paired with. 19 Animal cries — which are far too complex to be simulated — will have to be taken from library recordings.
Watching “Foley artists” at work on wildlife projects gives me a thrill like the one we get when we see how a magic trick is done. Admittedly, the significance of the technique goes further. 20 Sounds have the ability to affect our understanding of a given species.
A.But this isn’t quite the case.
B.There are some exceptions, though.
C.The Foley process involves a large team.
D.Wildlife documentaries also tend to require large crews.
E.Sounds guide our emotional interpretation of the things we see.
F.This is an unavoidable outcome of modern wildlife filmmaking.
G.How it is portrayed in documentaries may also impact conservation efforts.

I faced a tight budget when I was nine. On November Ist, I used up most of the money I saved. With a small amount of pocket money left before Christmas I didn’t have enough to buy presents for the family.
I was seriously considering going to my dad and asking for an advance on the next year’s pocket money, so I could at least buy gifts for my family members. But then, one evening, I was sitting in my room reading advertisements in the back of a magazine. Several greeting-card companies were telling us how people could make money by selling their cards and stationery (文具). Normally, I would have passed right over the ads, but this time my situation was so difficult that I felt I had nothing to lose.
The ad that attracted me most was one by a well-known greeting-card company in my nation, whose products were of high quality. With my parents’ help, I contacted the company, although they preferred adults or older kids to advertise their products. After my sincere request, they agreed to give me, a nine-year-old boy, a chance.
My sales materials arrived within the week. I had expected something small and neat, but the package looked like a dinosaur’s shoebox it was close to three feet long and nearly a foot wide, full of stuff. There was a thick binder (活页夹) containing a complete selection of the cards and some writing paper, which I would be selling for around $3 per box.
Although my parents supported my try to make money by myself, they had little confidence in my success; after all, instead of an outgoing kid, I was somewhat shy. However, I was determined to have a try to challenge myself.

第二节 读后续写(参考范文)
Wasting no time, I set off and knocked on doors in my neighborhood. Nervous as I was, I greeted each resident politely and introduced the beautiful cards patiently. To my surprise, most people were friendly and willing to buy my products. Some even praised me for being brave. I went from house to house the whole afternoon, gradually becoming less shy and more confident.
Eventually, I earned over $20, a large sum of money for a 9-year-old kid in 1954. I was filled with excitement and pride. With the money, I bought lovely Christmas gifts for every family member. Seeing their big smiles, I felt extremely happy. This experience not only solved my money problem but also helped me overcome my shyness. From then on, I became a more confident and brave boy.
