This past January, Lucy Liu reached a milestone in her art career. The world-class actor, director and visual artist presented her work titled “Unhomed Belongings” in a museum exhibition for the first time.
Liu has been making art since she was a teenager and still sticks to a consistent studio practice alongside her work as an actress and director. She got her start while growing up in Queens in the 1980s, wandering New York City streets with a camera in hand. Her first artworks were photographs. After taking a class at New York Studio School, she turned to painting. “I felt like I wasn’t able to express fully what I wanted with the photograph,” Liu explained.
With painting, she discovered that her work didn’t have to be realistic or meet certain expectations. “Everyone has a different format for how they want to show what they are thinking about, or what they are seeing to the audience,” she said. “I just had to let go of the audience and just started thinking about what I wanted to see.” Over time, Liu has also experimented with sculpture, silkscreen and textiles. She looks up to artists like Willem de Kooning, Agnes Martin and Robert Frank, but she feels that her lack of an art-school background has helped her to naturally grow and experiment as an artist, which helps a lot to set her apart from other artists.
Much of Liu’s work traces back to her childhood. “Because we were an immigrant (移民) family and I am first-generation, I always had this imbalance of belonging,” she explained. “I think at first it was the language barrier, not speaking English, but then it started becoming about how I look.” Art, she explained, became a way to reflect on her younger self. “I think that art helps evaluate some of the psychology of yourself as a child, and to throw light upon some things you may never have understood,” she said.
21. What marked a milestone in Lucy Liu’s life
A. Her first film as an actress. B. The exhibition of her painting.
C. Her work as a famous director. D. Her art works of photographs.
22. Why does Lucy Liu prefer painting to photography
A. She wants to study something new. B. She wants to please the audience.
C. She wants to better express herself. D. She wants to promote her acting career.
23. What makes Lucy Liu different from other artists
A. Her lack of serious art education. B. Her acting career.
C. Her experience in photography. D. Her identity as an immigrant.
24. What can we know about Lucy Liu
A. She is a pioneer in painting. B. She had a carefree childhood.
C. Art helps her understand the world. D. She had no difficulty acquiring English.
25. What’s the text mainly about
A. Liu’s success as an actress and director. B. Liu’s views on art education.
C. Liu’s personal and artistic development. D. Liu’s techniques used in her artworks.

For Australian cattle farmer Jody Brown, the most frightening evidence of drought is the silence. Trees stand still, the singing of birds gone.
The constant dryness means her cattle have decreased to around 400, down from 1,100 in 2002, and at times there have been no animals on the land at all. The native grasses, once green, have turned into grey ash. According to United Nations’ estimates, global crop production could fall about 30% because of climate change, while food is sharply demanded in the coming decades. The world is facing a new age of rapidly increasing food prices that could push almost 2 billion more people into hunger in a worst-case climate crisis.
Facing the scary predictions, farmers have begun to change. On Brown’s farm, she’s experimenting with regenerative-farming practices better suited to drought. She’s exploring alternatives to traditional methods that don’t push the land as hard. Meanwhile, many agrichemical companies are developing new varieties for vegetables, like cabbages that are more resistant (有抵抗力的) to extreme weather.
Across the globe, farmers are switching seeds and improving irrigation (灌溉). Lucas Oliveira in Brazil is pulling out half his coffee trees to plant corn and soybeans instead. He is being forced to change course after coffee crops suffered from drought and then an extreme frost. With drought hitting California, Fritz Durst is working to trap water. He’s boarded up pipes to hold the rain that does fall. Durst will also plant cover crops, which can help enrich soils and prevent erosion (水土流失).
One of the biggest challenges for farmers is that there is currently no access to funds that would be critical (关键的) to undertake the kind of massive transformation.
“If you have to deal with millions of farmers around the world, you have to work together with others. That’s a huge task,” said Monika Zurek, senior researcher at University of Oxford’s Environmental Change Institute.
26. Why are the data mentioned in Paragraph 2
A. To illustrate the frequent drought.
B. To prove the increasing food demand.
C. To describe the situation of crop production.
D. To present the serious results of climate crisis.
27. What is farmers’ reaction to the predictions
A. Experimenting with agrichemicals. B. Sticking to traditional methods.
C. Developing new varieties for vegetables. D. Exploring other farming practices.

A. He is giving up coffee planting entirely.
B. His coffee crops were destroyed by insects.
C. Extreme weather forced him to change his planting strategy.
D. He plans to grow more coffee trees despite the drought.
29. How does Fritz Durst in California deal with the drought
A. He collects rainfall by blocking pipes. B. He switches from coffee to other plants.
C. He covers his crops to fight drought. D. He studies the soil to improve irrigation.
30. What is of great importance to the transformation
A. Improving irrigation facility. B. Offering farmers access to funds.
C. Addressing environmental change. D. Introducing ways to prevent erosion.

Many educators have been teaching themselves how to use AI. For Jerome Ong, a 5th grade teacher in Ridgewood, New Jersey, AI has changed the way he approaches teaching. He now uses AI tools every week in his classroom. “You have to find what works for your students,” he said. Ong not only teaches his students what AI is, but also where it falls short. “If you keep at it and say, ‘No, you’re wrong, you’re wrong,’ eventually AI will say, ‘I’m sorry, I was wrong.’ Doing that with your class can show you that AI isn’t really as smart as you think it is,” Ong said.
This summer, Microsoft, OpenAI and Anthropic announced a first-of-its-kind plan to train hundreds of thousands of members of the American Federation of Teachers. “I think if we’re going to make AI work for students and kids, we need to listen to teachers,” said Microsoft president Brad Smith. The $23 million investment will go toward virtual and in-person training in New York City.
“The direct connection between a teacher and their kids can never be replaced by new technologies, but if we learn how to use them, set practical guidelines and put teachers in the driver’s seat, teaching and learning can be better,” said AFT President Randi Weingarten.
However, critics (批评家) mention cheating concerns and Microsoft’s own research, which showed a reduction in critical thinking skills when AI was not used responsibly. AFT member Lois Weiner thinks teachers would be better served by more support within schools than by a partnership with Silicon Valley. “There is so much boredom in the job, but the answer to that is to improve teachers’ working conditions,” said Weiner, adding that AI does not achieve better work conditions for teachers.
Smith argued education should be left to teachers: “Those of us in the tech field need to provide the tools and help school boards, districts, and teachers so they decide how to put those tools into practice.”
31. What do the underlined words “falls short” in paragraph 1 imply
A. AI makes frequent mistakes. B. AI breaks down completely.
C. AI sometimes fails to meet expectations. D. AI runs out of power quickly.
32. What is the main idea of paragraph 2
A. Tech companies will train American teachers.
B. Microsoft donates $23 million to poor schools.
C. Brad Smith supports students in using AI.
D. AI firms help improve kids’ learning ability.
33. What can be inferred from Lois Weiner’s comments
A. AI may relieve teachers from boring tasks.
B. Teachers are smarter than AI systems.
C. More school-based support is needed for teachers.
D. Cooperating with tech companies is helpful for teachers.
34. What is Brad Smith’s attitude towards AI in education
A. Disapproving. B. Favorable. C. Doubtful. D. Subjective.
35. What’s the best title of the passage
A. AI in Teaching: Hopes and Worries B. AI in Learning: Thinking and Progress
C. AI in Education: Fun and Engagement D. AI in Researching: Views and Opinions

What is spring drowsiness (昏昏欲睡)
It is a state of drowsiness, general weakness, and persistent sleepiness. This is the famous phenomenon (现象) of “spring drowsiness”, when weather gradually warms up.
36 3
Exercise is a powerful weapon to overcome spring drowsiness. In spring, outdoor sports that allow you to get close to nature are more than suitable, including leisurely walks, exciting bike rides, energetic jogs, and challenging mountain climbs, among others.
What exactly should we do
37 For beginners, running is not ideal for the knees, whereas walking is a better choice to enjoy the fresh air. People can freely breathe the fresh air filled with the good smell of plants and trees during the walk. First, walk slowly for 5 minutes and then speed up. 38 Moreover, each exercise must last at least 30 minutes.
Mountain climbing is also an amazing aerobic (有氧的) exercise in spring. It can be good for your lung function. 39 The winding, rough paths in the mountains are like strict “coaches”, helping people improve their heart function. Moreover, viewing distant scenery during mountain climbing offers a break to tired eyes and the mind.
What other options should we consider
In addition to using exercise to drive away spring drowsiness, people also need to focus on rest and diet. 40 You know, a sweet sleep can effectively reduce tiredness. Besides, include more protein in your diet, such as fish, eggs, milk, soy products, and chicken, enabling the body to absorb high-quality protein to the fullest.
A. Increase the speed to 120 steps per minute.
B. Be sure to ensure adequate sleep.
C. Why should we address the phenomenon
D. How should we deal with these symptoms
E. It can also be beneficial to strengthen your heartbeat.
F. The fresh air is good for improving your lung function.
G. Quick walking is certainly the top choice for spring exercise.

To raise students’ awareness of natural disasters, our school organized a meaningful visit to the City Natural Disaster Experience Hall last Friday.
During the activity, students were exposed to vivid videos and took part in simulating drills like earthquake/tsunami escapes. Guided by experts, they also learned how to protect themselves properly in different scenes. The hands-on experience was more practical and impressive than classroom learning.
This activity turned out to be a great success, which not only enriched students’ school life, but equipped them with practical safety skills. Everyone agreed that what they learned would truly be of great benefit. (100 words)

W: The National Park we will visit is located in the desert just north of our city. Like any hike of this nature, you should be prepared for the adventure in the desert. First, hike with a partner for safety. I enjoy hiking with family members and close friends. Second, carry a cell phone with you. However, keep in mind that you might not get any signal in some places, so don’t depend on it. Third, be sure to have the right clothing and shoes or boots for the hike. Light, breathable clothing is the best during the summer, along with the hat and strong hiking shoes. Fourth, carry plenty of water. Having a few snacks can give you energy, too. Fifth, take a small first-aid box with you, particularly on longer hikes, in case you get injured. Sixth, pack a detailed map of the area you’re hiking, along with a compass or a GPS to locate your position. And finally, take nothing home with you except pictures and memories. You can protect these areas by leaving all rocks, flowers, and other objects for future visitors.
