Gardening for Children: Joys They Love and Futures We Build
Gardening has become increasingly popular among children in the UK. A survey conducted by You Gov and the RHS gathered responses from 1,200 children, 80% of whom had gardening experience and harvested joy from it for multiple reasons, as is shown in the chart.
Gardens contribute to children’s growth as a powerful way to connect with grandparents, parents and carers, who pass on knowledge, stories and a love of growing. Gardens are also living classrooms. From understanding how plants thrive to discovering the insets and wildlife that share our spaces, gardening offers hands-on learning that supports both well being and environmental awareness. In the follow-up interview with the children surveyed about their dream gardens, many frequently listed hideouts like treehouses, secret corners and blanket tents. These are among the top desirable garden components for young minds. Such a feature turns a simple space into a magical world where kids can play, explore, and enjoy their own time.
Gardens, however, face severe challenges: biodiversity is threatened, public biosecurity awareness is insufficient, and many households have no equal access to gardens. Fortunately, community and school gardens are developing well. Gardeners are adopting sustainable methods, while cross-sector cooperation and technology are promoting environmental horticulture (园艺学). To fully realize gardens’ value, four key priorities must be emphasized in the future.
Recognition
Gardens should be integrated into policies concerning health, education, climate and biodiversity, with environmental horticulture valued as an essential green skill.
Collaboration
Partnerships across government, industry, communities and individuals help build lasting garden programs, expand successful models, and make gardens shared assets.
Investment
More investment in training, infrastructure (基础设施) and research is required to make sure of the garden sector’s long-term and future development.
Access
Gardening should be guaranteed for all people in various private and public spaces, from homes and schools to hospitals and community settings.
21. How many surveyed children enjoy gardening for its environmental benefit
A.288. B.384. C.480. D.960.
22. What is the feature of children’s dream garden
A.Family connections. B.Private play areas. C.Wildlife protection. D.Botanical knowledge.
23. What does the author suggest regarding gardens’ future
A.Relying on government’s support. B.Raising funds to expand private gardens.
C.Making laws about climate change. D.Ensuring convenient access for the public.

Glancing at the author’s copy of the book on the desk, I am reminded of how long it has taken to get to this point as I am confirming the arrangements for one of the promotional events scheduled for my fourth non-fiction work on art.
I actually started professional writing fairly late in life, after working for the local council for many years. Although I was into literature, it was for personal enjoyment. During my teenage years I sometimes wrote for the school magazine, just for fun. Later, this interest developed into a stronger desire for recognition, and, I’d spend months typing texts and sending them off to magazines and publishers, anxiously awaiting a response that often never came.
I have also had a passion for art. Wandering around galleries is an absolute pleasure for me, although I don’t have an artistic bone in my body, unlike my twin sister, Louisa, who is remarkably gifted and has launched a career as an artist.
One evening she called to say she was struggling with the text for an upcoming exhibition brochure and asked if I could give her a hand. I warned her that I’d give it a try. Later that evening I managed to produce something that I thought might be acceptable and emailed it to her.
It was a real success and set the wheels in motion to turn my dream into a reality. One of the guests at the opening night was an editor working for an online arts magazine. Having been impressed by my piece describing the exhibition in the brochure, she managed to track me down, first by contacting the gallery and then my sister. Well, to be honest, I didn’t know what to think and the prospect of meeting with her filled me with fear. Questions came flooding through my mind and I immediately messaged my sister, who strongly urged me to seize the opportunity. So I fired off an acceptance email before I had the opportunity to change my mind again.
Over the following months I devoted every spare moment of my time to attending exhibitions and crafting commentary articles on the region’s artists. I have to admit that the whole thing was exciting. My brain was constantly filled with ideas, and I enjoyed watching them take shape as I typed into the night on my laptop.
After that first summer, I was hooked on writing about art, which was so enjoyable and satisfying. Definitely, it was what I should be doing.
24. When the author was young, she ______.
A.had a talent for art B.ran a school magazine
C.found writing interesting D.won recognition from publishers
25. Receiving her sister’s request for help, the author was ______.
A.cautious B.touched C.relieved D.uninterested
26. What finally encouraged the author to accept the editor’s offer
A.Her passion for art. B.Confidence from success.
C.The editor’s enthusiasm. D.The push from her sister.
27. What can we learn from the passage
A.Every end is a fresh beginning. B.Talent is born from consistent effort.
C.Unexpected turns in life may bring gifts. D.Lifelong learning leads to personal growth.

A Chinese research team has developed a new AI tool called DeepWheat, designed to revolutionize crop breeding. This innovation offers a way to predict how genes will behave in different parts of a plant, a long-standing challenge in agriculture. The wheat genome is especially complex, even larger than the human genome, which has made understanding its functions difficult. By overcoming this barrier, DeepWheat provides a new path to creating excellent crop varieties with desirable qualities.
DeepWheat’s key strength lies in its ability to handle the complex effects of genes. Many important genes can have a dual role, being either helpful or harmful depending on where and when they are active. For instance, a gene might increase grain size but reduce the number of branches on a plant. This complex interaction has made traditional breeding difficult. The AI tool helps scientists see these potential trade-offs by predicting tissue-specific outcomes, allowing for more informed decisions.
Traditional methods often relied on a slow and unpredictable process of trial and error. Researchers would have to edit countless gene sites, hoping to find one that worked, which was both time-consuming and wasteful. DeepWheat offers a smarter alternative. It uses computer simulations to test all possible gene changes and pinpoint the ones most likely to produce the desired result. This targeted approach means scientists only carry out the edits most likely to succeed, greatly improving efficiency and accuracy.
The impact of DeepWheat extends beyond wheat. It has been successfully applied to other major crops like rice and corn. By providing a way to fine-tune gene control, the tool helps solve a key breeding problem: improving one trait (like yield) might unintentionally weaken another (like disease resistance). DeepWheat helps balance these competing needs, speeding up the development of high-performance plants that combine multiple positive characteristics. It represents a major leap forward in agricultural science.
28. What is the main purpose of the passage
A.To introduce an AI tool for improving crops. B.To explain the complexity of the wheat genome.
C.To compare traditional and modern farming methods. D.To discuss the risks of using AI in science.
29. What can be inferred about traditional breeding methods
A.They are no longer used by scientists. B.They are costly and inefficient.
C.They focus mainly on growing rice. D.They are more accurate than AI tools.
30. How does DeepWheat help solve a key problem in breeding
A.By making the wheat genome smaller. B.By predicting gene changes to balance traits.
C.By increasing the number of genes in plants. D.By removing the need for laboratory editing.
31. What does DeepWheat do before scientists perform actual edits
A.It grows new crops in fields. B.It runs computer simulations to find the best edits.
C.It analyzes historical data on successful crops. D.It consults with other plant breeding experts.
D
Solar and wind power are key to a low-carbon future, but they come with a fundamental problem: they are unstable. Some days are sunny and windy; others are cloudy and calm. To ensure electricity is always available during periods of low production, energy planners must build more wind turbines (涡轮机) and solar panels than are actually needed on fine weather days.
This creates a strange situation. When the weather is favorable, renewable energy systems generate more electricity than the grid (电网) can handle. To avoid overloading the system, operators are forced to cut down production, wasting perfectly clean energy.
A new study from Carnegie Science and Caltech offers an elegant solution: instead of wasting the excess electricity, why not use it to make hydrogen fuel The process, called electrolysis, uses electricity to split water molecules (分子) into hydrogen gas and oxygen gas. The hydrogen can then be stored and used later to generate electricity, power vehicles or supply industrial processes — all without carbon release.
Researchers Tyler Ruggles and Ken Caldeira developed a computer model incorporating decades of historical weather data to test this concept. Their findings were striking: in modeled low-carbon energy systems, there is almost always enough electricity available to produce hydrogen after meeting grid demand. The study suggests that new basic facilities would not need to be built until hydrogen production accounts for over 20 percent of total energy demand.
The potential impact is substantial. By trapping electricity that would otherwise be wasted, green hydrogen production could lower the average cost of electricity while making better use of renewable resources. The key is keeping the cost of electrolysis equipment low.
“One of the biggest challenges of instituting a low-carbon electricity zone has been effectively integrating variable resources like wind and solar,” Ken Caldeira explained. “Our work demonstrates that production of hydrogen could be a major step toward making better use of wind and solar resources.”
32. What problem does renewable energy face according to paragraph 1
A.High cost. B.Instability. C.Low popularity. D.Poor productivity.
33. What does the underlined word “excess” in paragraph 3 probably mean
A.Limited. B.Extra. C.Stored. D.Rare.
34. What is Ken Caldeira’s attitude towards the new concept
A.Favorable. B.Dismissive. C.Doubtful. D.Cautious.
35. What can be the best title for the text
A.Green Energy Is Greatly Profitable B.Renewable Resources Have Been Found
C.Renewable Energy Will Replace Electricity D.New Finding Eases Green Energy’s Headache

Becoming the Genuine You
The world is always ready to tell us what we should do. We may follow the expected career, make friends with certain people, or live in a particular neighborhood. 36 Psychologist Dr Manpreet Dhuffar-Pottiwal offers several practical shifts to help us find our true selves.
37 Shift from rigid goal setting to accepting impermanence. And when things are constantly changing around us, connect to our inner values to guide our choices. Thinking about childhood interests can also help, as they show our true passions that arise from within, untouched by outside pressure.
Build flexibility and adaptability. We may not feel as sharp as we once were, but with intentional action, our brain can remain flexible. 38 You can pick up a language or cook a new dish. The concept of post-traumatic growth (创伤后成长) teaches us that difficult experiences can change us for better. We should believe that we can always improve no matter what happens.
Regulate our emotions properly. Activities like gardening or cleaning engage the hands and body, which ground us in the present and free us from endless worrying. Try practices such as tech-free days or mindfulness training. 39
Decide our own priorities. The Self-Determination Theory is a framework that helps you understand and improve your motivation and well-being. 40 Look at simple, practical ways to balance prioritizing self-care, caring for others, and pursuing the goals that are emotionally meaningful to you.
A.Deal with personal wounds.
B.Draw on inner values in uncertainty.
C.Gradually, our inner voice fades away.
D.It emphasizes autonomy as a psychological need.
E.We often forget about the importance of hard work.
F.The key is to keep curious and open to learn new things.
G.They help reduce stress and balance our mood effectively.

On a sunny weekend, 17-year-old Tom joined a school camping trip to a remote island. Tom, an enthusiastic photographer, was also a bit of a loner who often preferred exploring on his own. He had taken a basic survival skills course but had never truly faced a real-life emergency.
As the group stepped into the thick underbrush, the air was heavy with the scent of damp moss and wildflowers, and Tom couldn’t contain his excitement. Mr. Wilson, a seasoned outdoors teacher, paused every few minutes to warn everybody to stay close. He took out a bundle of small red flags. Every 20 steps, he tied a flag to a low-hanging branch or a sturdy fern (蕨), saying, “The flags, along with the gurgling stream nearby, are your lifelines. They’ll boost your chance of survival.” Most students watched carefully, but Tom, half nodded absentmindedly, half distracted by the calls of rumored golden-winged parrots, gradually drifting away from the group.
A moment later, Tom was photographing the mouth-watering Acai berries (巴西莓) covering the mountain forests when rolling thunder crashed. Looking around, he realized there was no one around — he was all alone. Quickly Tom stuffed his camera into his bag and tried to retrace his steps. But the sky darkened abruptly, a fierce wind tore through the trees. The heavy rain came pouring into a muddy mess, washing away any signs of the trail. His phone already low on battery died completely because he pressed it in a wild manner to call for help. Tom stumbled (蹒跚而行) through the mud, his sneakers stained with dirt and water dripping from his hair.
As night fell, the downpour stopped but the temperature dropped below freezing, and the cold bit through his clothes. Through the bitter wind, he heard a chilling sound — the distant howl of wolves. Heart pounding heavily, Tom was in a complete panic, with an overwhelming longing to go home.

第二节 读后续写(参考范文)
With an empty stomach, Tom felt his strength slipping away. He forced himself to calm down and recalled Mr. Wilson’s words. The red flags and the stream were lifelines! He struggled to his feet and followed the sound of the flowing stream. Staring hard into the darkness, he finally spotted a faint red flag on a branch. Encouraged, he kept moving forward, ignoring the cold and fear.
After what seemed like hours, Tom heard shouts in the distance. He shouted back at the top of his lungs. Soon his teammates and Mr. Wilson appeared. Seeing Tom safe, everyone cheered. Tom apologized for wandering off and realized the importance of following rules and staying calm in danger. This terrible yet valuable experience would stay in his mind forever.
