三、阅读理解
If someone finds a wallet with lots of money, is he or she likely (可能的) to return it
A team from the US and Switzerland did an experiment (实验) in forty countries around the world. The researchers took over 17,000 “lost” wallets to different places such as hotels, post offices and banks. Then they waited to see if the workers in these places tried to call the owner of the wallet.
The wallets were a little special. Most of the wallets had no money, and the rest had $13 inside. Each wallet also held three cards with the information of the owner.
The scientists thought returning a lost wallet was about being honest. They wanted to test how people would act if no one was watching them. Before the experiment started, the scientists expected that the wallets with money in them would be less likely to be returned. But in fact, it was exactly the opposite. 51% of the people who found a wallet with money in it tried to contact the owner.
In the US, the UK, and Poland, the scientists decided to add a “big money” test. Some wallets had money worth about $100. In those countries, 46% of wallets with no money were returned, and 61% of those with $13 were returned. And 72% of wallets with nearly $100 were returned.
The scientists don’t know exactly why people are more likely to return a wallet with more money in it. But the act of returning a lost wallet shows a person’s good quality. It easily builds trust and a close relationship among people.
21.What do we know about the experiment
A.It was carried out in 14 countries. B.All wallets had $13 inside.
C.Wallets were put in different places. D.Less than 17,000 wallets were used.

23.This passage is most likely taken from ________.
A.a science magazine B.a personal diary
C.a travel guide D.a short story collection
Imagine (想象) a place where nothing ends up in the rubbish bin. Everything can be reused and recycled. However, the real world is the opposite. A recent report shows that only 7.2% of all used materials are recycled.
Fortunately, a company in Milan named Krill Design decided to solve the problem. Set up in 2018, the company has made plenty of useful items. Its designs include chairs, clocks, bowls, lamps and some other furniture. But what makes these items special is that they are made from a kind of plastic-like material—Rekrill. It is fully biodegradable (可生物降解的) and can be used over and over again.
“After years, you have to change your furniture anyway,” says Marco, a worker at Krill Design. “But if your furniture is made from Rekrill, we will be able to recycle it and reuse the material. If our material ends up in the sea by mistake, it doesn’t produce any waste.”
To make every item, four steps are needed. First, the food waste like fruit peel (皮) is dried and made into powder (粉末). Then the powder is mixed with a material known as PHB.Next, the mixed material is turned into Rekrill. At last, it is put into a 3D printer to print items. Printing time can be different depending on the item, The lamp, for example, takes about three hours to print.
“Our material produces no waste, but it costs probably six times more than plastics,” Marco says. “It is also very difficult to make the material, so we understand why many companies aren’t doing it.” He expects Rekrill to be widely used in a few years.
24.What does the underlined word “Fortunately” probably mean
A.Suddenly. B.Finally. C.Luckily. D.Clearly.
25.What makes Krill Design’s items special
A.The design. B.The price. C.The purpose. D.The material.

C.How Krill Design collects food waste. D.Why it is a good idea to choose Rekrill items.
27.What can we learn from Marco’s words in the last paragraph
A.Rekrill will be cheaper in the future.
B.Rekrill has been widely used around the world.
C.Rekrill is environmentally friendly but expensive.
D.Many companies think it’s difficult to recycle plastic.
Mesa Verde lies in the southwestern part of Colorado in the United States. Mesa Verde is a hill that looks like a “green table”. It was the home of the Pueblo people for about seven hundred years, from about 550 to 1300.
The Pueblo people first lived in caves. Then they made houses by digging holes in the ground. These people planted corn and beans. They were also good at making pottery (陶器) which has lasted a long time.
In the 8th century, the Pueblo people moved to the top of the mesa. They built houses with many rooms. They lived there for about six hundred years. Later, they moved into the cliffs (悬崖) on the sides of the mesa. Maybe they moved there to protect themselves from enemies (敌人).
As many as five thousand people may have lived at Mesa Verde. Unluckily, within a few years, no one was left. It is believed that they left because of years and years of dry weather. After a long time, they couldn’t grow enough food for everyone.
No one knew about Mesa Verde for hundreds of years. In the mid-to-late 19th century, some cowboys (牛仔) began to explore the ruins (遗迹). They weren’t trained archaeologists (考古学家), but they realized the importance of Mesa Verde. They collected artifacts, like the pottery and tools made by the Pueblo people. The cowboys wanted the United States to make Mesa Verde a national park.
Mesa Verde became a national park in 1906. It was the first park in the United States to “protect the works of man”. If you visit Mesa Verde, you can see some of its six hundred cliff houses. You can even follow in the footsteps of the Pueblo people. You can picture their lives as you climb up and down the ladders that lead from place to place.

Sophie Pascoe is one of New Zealand’s greatest Paralympic swimmers. Her incredible journey began in Christchurch, where she was born on January 8, 1993. At just three years old, her life changed forever when a lawnmower accident severely injured her left leg. After five hours of surgery, doctors had to amputate it below the knee.
Despite this challenge, Sophie refused to let her disability define her. At seven, she started swimming lessons. At first, she struggled—her artificial leg made balancing difficult, and she often swallowed water. But with her family’s support and her coach’s guidance, she trained hard every day. Within a year, she was swimming faster than many able-bodied children.
When Sophie was nine, her grandfather became very sick with lung cancer. Before he passed away, she made him a promise: “I will win a gold medal for you at the Paralympics.” This promise became her motivation.
At 15, Sophie made history as New Zealand’s youngest Paralympian at Beijing 2008. She won three gold medals and one silver, breaking world records. Standing on the podium, she looked up, imagining her grandfather’s proud smile.
Her success continued at three more Paralympics—London 2012, Rio 2016, and Tokyo 2020—where she won a total of 15 medals (9 gold, 6 silver). She is now one of the most decorated Paralympic swimmers in history.
But Sophie’s impact goes beyond medals. She works to inspire others through her “Accessible Sports” program, helping disabled children participate in sports. She visits schools, sharing her message: “Disability doesn’t mean inability. The only limits are the ones we set for ourselves.”
Her autobiography, Breaking Waves, became a bestseller in New Zealand. In 2022, she received the country’s highest civilian honor. Sophie’s story teaches us that with courage and determination, anything is possible.
32.How did Sophie Pascoe’s promise to her grandfather influence her life
A.It made her give up swimming training.
B.It became the motivation for her hard training.
C.It made her focus on studies instead of sports.
D.It led her to start helping other disabled children.
33.Which shows the correct order of events in Sophie Pascoe’s life
(Put the following in the correct order according to the passage)
a. Won 3 gold medals at her first Paralympics b: Started swimming lessons
c. Launched “Accessible Sports” program d. Suffered a lawnmower accident
A.dbac B.bdca C.dabc D.badc
34.How does Sophie Pascoe continue to inspire others after her competitive career
A.Only by writing her autobiography.
B.By participating in more swimming competitions.

35.What is the central message of Sophie Pascoe’s story
A.Winning medals is the most important goal in sports.

Since everyone likes to be around people with good manners, one can never learn too much about manners. Here are some rules that may help you become a more polite person.
In public, it is kind to hold the door open for others, especially when you see someone with arms full or who might have difficulty getting in. Never allow a door to shut heavily on anyone following you. But avoid holding a door open when someone is a bit far away. 36
Be kind to people who work for you, such as waiters, shopkeepers and postmen. It is kind to smile and say “thank you” to them when they are easily forgotten by most people. They work hard so that we can enjoy our lives. 37
Take off your headphones (耳机) before you speak to someone. At the end of a phone call with people older than you, it’s proper to make sure they end the phone call first. 38 Loud noise is always unwelcome and may even cause fights.
39 Hear them out before expressing your own opinion. Allow them to voice their opinions, even when you don’t agree with them. Use your communication skills instead of raising your voice to express yourself.
Also, when you are in a group conversation, make eye contact with others. This shows that you are paying attention. Try to share the “talking time” fairly. 40 And if you need to leave the conversation briefly (简短地), excuse yourself politely.
A.Don’t cut in on people when they talk.
B.This might cause them to hurry up to the door.
C.It’s important to let them know their work is seen by us.
D.Always remember to use words instead of fights to work out problems.
E.It’s wise to get to the meeting room 15 minutes before the meeting starts.
F.When in public, don’t play music or videos loudly on your mobile phones.
G.Don’t always be the one who talks the most, but also make sure you get a chance to share your ideas.

You must think a computer is the best thing in the world, right You must think it works at a super speed and can do everything. Well, it’s not. In fact, the human brain is much more powerful than any super computer. Imagine a glass is just about to fall off the table. Your brain controls everything that you need to do to save that glass from falling. First, your eyes check out what’s going on, and then tell your brain, and your brain decides how quickly you need to react, and then your muscles go into action. This is just from your brain. No computers could ever come close to that.
The brain weighs just about 3 pounds, but it controls everything you do from thinking, learning, feeling, even to breathing and your heart beating. Even though the brain is just about 2% of your body weight, it uses around 20% of the energy in your body. That is a lot for such a small organ (器官). There are billions of tiny cells in your brain. There are so many that it would take you many years to count them all.
Your brain stops growing when you’re about 18, but it actually keeps on developing and learning new things. So your parents are really super smart. You won’t be able to fool them. Believe it or not, your brain never stops working. Even during sleep, the brain works—for long-term memory establishment. It is realized that the brain is the second organ in the body after the heart that never stops during human lives. So everyone should be proud of such a gift of nature.

Since creating the civilized (文明的) city, all the people in Suqian have made efforts. Their good behaviour can be seen everywhere. As a junior student, I have also done a lot about it.
Now I have become more polite to others. I think it is important for me to obey the traffic rules because it can lead to fewer and fewer accidents. Moreover, it is good manners for me not to make a lot of noise. I also form a habit of giving my seat to the people in need on the bus.
At the same time, I have realized the importance of protecting the environment and I have developed a green lifestyle. I always turn off the tap while brushing my teeth. In this way, I can help save water and energy. Besides, I have many good habits to reduce pollution. For example, I take my own bags when going shopping.
What’s more, I am helpful enough to work as a volunteer in the community centre to help the children with their studies. I am glad to give a helping hand to people in need, such as donating pocket money to poor children.
Many hands make light work. If everyone tries our best, we will make a big difference to our city. The more good manners we have, the more beautiful and civilized our city will be.
