Well, it’s time someone went to enjoy the world’s second cities. They are just as culturally rich, just as atmospheric, and have no less potential for exploration.
Akureyri, Iceland
While Reykjavik is the first port of call for travellers looking to explore Iceland’s typical landscapes, Akureyri to the north has everything the capital offers. In fact, opportunities to see both the Northern Lights and whales, two of Iceland’s greatest draws, are greater in the north of the country, and its scenery is similar to that of the lunar surface, full of mystery and wonders.
Saint-Louis, Senegal
Senegal is one of the most beautiful countries to visit in West Africa. While Dakar is by far the largest city, it’s Saint-Louis that tends to truly win the hearts of visitors. The history here is rich, but what stands out is just how well-preserved it is. That preserved old-world beauty helped earn the city UNESCO World Heritage status.
Chiang Mai, Thailand
Nestled among misty mountains, Chiang Mai offers a perfect combination of ancient tradition and modern creativity. Visitors can wander through ancient temple ruins like Wat Chedi Luang and explore energetic night markets stocked with both local crafts and the region’s famous dishes, like khao soi, a rich, coconut-based curry noodle soup.
Christchurch, New Zealand
Known as the “Garden City”, Christchurch provides its own unique combination of history, modern creativity, and natural beauty. After an extensive reconstruction in the wake of the destructive 2011 earthquakes, visitors can now discover a mix of unique architecture, street art and exciting modern dining options, all wrapped up in the city’s historic and unmatched charm.

Though the 2026 Winter Games have come and gone, one future Olympic hopeful stays focused on the next games. Seventeen-year-old Quinn Derheimer is chasing his 2030 Olympic dream in competitive speed skating.
Quinn started on the ice at a young age. “I started hockey (冰球) when I was 5 years old. One day a team of speed skaters asked if I wanted to try on some speed skates and the rest is history.” He fell in love with the sport and began to train.
After practicing at a nearby ice skating ground and reaching a high level in the sport, Quinn and his family made the decision to train at the Pettit National Ice Center in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, despite living in Greenwood, Indiana. Quinn and his dad travel every Monday to Milwaukee for a week of training and back home to Indiana on weekends.
With much hard work comes a lot of success and glory. Quinn must train, research, eat well, and do more to pursue a path to the Olympics.
In middle school, Quinn joined Indiana Gateway Digital Academy, a remote school program that allows him more flexibility in his training. He wakes up at 5 a.m. to practice before online learning begins and he is back to practice after school. He must wake up early for lifting, and then skate in the afternoon, with only a short two-month off-season.
All his hard work is paying off. Quinn is now nationally ranked and has competed in the Junior World Cup for speed skating. Even though Quinn is a nationally ranked speed skater, he makes sure to find time for his education. “The teachers are very flexible, and I try to fit in schoolwork along with family time,” he said.
Significant sacrifice goes into making Quinn’s Olympic dream possible, but he believes it is all worth it. “You have to stay focused on what your goal is, one day at a time, one step at a time; don’t rush it.”

D.His online school offers him a flexible schedule.
7. What is Quinn’s attitude towards achieving his Olympic dream
A.Optimistic.

Start with small things: switching to a reusable water bottle, and then working on weaning yourself off paper towels. And there are different ways, you know. Then, maybe you want to start buying local food and eating less meat. I mean, don’t think that you have to do everything at once; take one step at a time and then it’s not as scary.
This is our semi-annual textile (纺织品) drive. We run two a year. We also run two e-waste drives, so four drives a year. And for this one we partner with Wearable Collections to properly recycle all of the unwanted textiles so that they don’t wind up in the waste stream. The goal is that 50 percent of them will be reused, upcycled and worn again. It’s one of our zero waste workshops, part of a new series that we’re partnering on.
And it’s basically a workshop for everyday New Yorkers to come and learn how they can live a zero waste lifestyle — one in which they’re throwing fewer things into landfill, doing more recycling and composting, and actually being heedful of the products they purchase so that they can purchase items that have a beneficial reuse.
It’s summer over there. We’re already swimming. Everybody brings in all of the clothes that they’re not using anymore. And we all trade and swap and people end up with new items. Anything left over gets donated. We’ve had a huge number of people coming from all different Broadway shows and from the neighborhood and offices in the community to bring their textiles.
I think the more we bring the public into our work, the more efficient it will be, the stronger our relationship grows, and the greater progress we can make.
8. What does the author say about zero waste
A.It values big changes for the environment.
B.It encourages the use of plenty of paper towels.
C.It needs a perfect plan before taking action.
D.It should be carried out step by step.
9. What does the underlined word “heedful” in paragraph 3 probably mean
A.Mindful.
B.Tolerant.
C.Fond.
D.Critical.
10. What can be inferred about the activity described in paragraph 4
A.It is held to promote Broadway shows.
B.It helps reduce textile waste in the community.
C.It aims to collect clothes for the swimming pool.
D.It is organized to sell old clothes at a low price.
11. What’s the text mainly about
A.Where to recycle textiles.
B.What zero waste workshops bring.
C.How to achieve zero waste.
D.Why zero waste matters so much.

This is how these young engineers imagine Jacksonville, a coastal city in Florida in the next 100 years. The model called Agua Prope, meaning clean water, was presented by a team of middle school students from Houston at the Future City Nationals in Washington, DC. The students’ goal was to build a city with a clean and reliable water system.
Many members on the Houston team come from Karachi, Pakistan’s largest and most populated city, where water shortages and the lack of access to clean water are persistent problems. Karachi is very underdeveloped right now. A lot of people are on the streets; they don’t have water to drink or they’re drinking polluted water and are badly in need of money. It’s very hard to even take showers over there. The water there costs a lot, and sometimes it’s polluted, which sometimes causes problems such as diarrhea (腹泻), and you don’t have water in the house for days.
Students on the Houston team say their model includes a strong system that monitors supply and demand, storage, filtration (过滤), and diversion of conventional as well as flood waters across the Jacksonville landscape. The main problems in Jacksonville are storm surges, hurricanes and floods. Actually a lot of problems caused by water shortage and pollution are going on internationally right now.
Organizers say some models are actually put into practice. They’re not only asking the participants to think about these challenges, but also empowering them in their solutions. This model calls for technology so advanced that it will be decades before it can be realized. But the students say they hope one day within the next 50 years, their vision of a clean water city will become a reality.
12. What inspired the students to design the Agua Prope project
A.Their personal experience of severe water problems.
B.The flood control problems in their hometown.
C.The request from the Jacksonville government.
D.A competition prize for building water systems.
13. What do we learn about the Agua Prope project
A.It can predict natural disasters correctly.
B.It takes various water problems into consideration.
C.It gets widely recognized by governments.
D.It centers on landscape improvement of cities.
14. Why will it take so long to apply this model entirely
A.Because Jacksonville refuses to use it.
B.Because it proves harmful to the environment.
C.Because the government hasn’t provided funds.
D.Because the required technology is still unavailable.
15. Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A.Lack of Clean Water in Future Cities
B.Popularity of Future City Competition
C.Vision of Future Urban Water Supply
D.Standards for Future Urban Construction

19 It requires kneeling with the tops of the feet flat on the floor and sitting back on the heels (脚后跟). The knees are kept close together, and the hands rest on the thighs (大腿). The backbone should remain straight, as in the cross-legged position.
If you’re on the go, the squatting position allows for active sitting and mobility. 20 Lower yourself into a squat, keeping your chest up and heels down, with your arms resting on your knees for stability.
A.And it can have serious effects on their health.
B.Sitting on the floor isn’t just a change of position.
C.The kneeling position helps you build leg strength.
D.It can help reduce back aches and everyday pain.
E.Beginners had better choose the one that is most comfortable.

The sky had turned deep grey as Liam hurried home from school. The air was thick with the promise of a storm, and he quickened his pace, hoping to avoid the downpour. Tomorrow was the final exam for his most challenging subject, physics, and he had planned a full evening of revision. Every minute counted.
As he cut through the small, deserted park near his apartment, a faint, whimpering sound caught his attention. It was so soft that it was almost carried away by the rising wind. Curiosity getting the better of him, Liam stopped and looked carefully under a dense bush near the path. There, huddled and shivering, was a small, muddy kitten (小猫). Its fur was wet, and one of its back legs was injured. The kitten looked up at him, and it let out another pitiful meow.
Liam’s heart sank. He was in a rush. He had a crucial exam to prepare for. His parents would likely be hesitant about bringing a stray animal home. He couldn’t decide whether to save it or not. He even took a few steps forward, trying to ignore the pleading look in the kitten’s eyes.
But the image of the helpless creature, alone and injured in the upcoming storm, was too much to bear. He thought of his own beloved pet dog at home, safe and warm. What if it were him, scared and hurting He struggled internally for a moment. Sighing, he knelt down, leaving his schoolbooks on the wet ground behind him.
“Hey there, little one,” he said in the gentlest voice. “You can’t stay here.” He slowly unzipped his school jacket, ignoring the cold wind. The kitten moved back in fear but was too weak to resist as Liam carefully wrapped it in his jacket. Holding the tiny creature close to his chest, he stood up. His revision plans were completely overturned. His priority was now clear.

第二节 参考范文
Liam decided to take the kitten to the nearest veterinary clinic. The wind blew harder and rain began to fall. He held the kitten tightly in his jacket and hurried all the way. On the way, the little kitten stayed quiet and felt safe in his arms. After arriving, the doctor checked its injury carefully and gave it proper treatment. Liam waited patiently until the treatment was finished.
Upon arriving home, Liam was met with surprise from his parents. He explained the whole story sincerely. Instead of blaming him, his parents praised him for his kindness. They agreed to adopt the poor kitten. Later, Liam finished his physics revision late at night. He did well in the exam the next day. From then on, the lovely kitten became a new member of his family.
