Dolphins are known for being smart. They talk to each other using clicks (咔嗒声) and whistles (哨子声). This
gave a group of scientists an idea: They could use Artificial Intelligence (AI) to better understand how dolphins
communicate. Now, they are even trying to "talk" to dolphins in the ocean.
AI uses information collected by the Wild Dolphin Project (WDP). Since 1985, scientists from WDP have been
watching dolphins in the Atlantic Ocean. They have listened to the sounds these dolphins make underwater. They
found that some sounds are about certain actions. For example, dolphins often make a "squawk" sound when they
fight, and a "buzz" sound when they want to get another dolphin's attention.
Now, some engineers from a company are using this information in a new way. They made an AI called
DolphinGemma. They gave it all the dolphin sound recordings from WDP. This taught the AI to find regular ways
in the sounds, some of which people might not notice. The hope is that one day, DolphinGemma will be able to
guess what sound a dolphin will make next.
Besides making DolphinGemma, the team also worked with scientists at the Georgia Institute of Technology to
create the CHAT system. This system "talks" to dolphins by playing new, man - made whistle sounds through an
underwater speaker. The researchers are teaching dolphins to connect each new whistle with a fun object, like a
piece of seaweed or a scarf. If a dolphin copies the whistle, it will get that object. DolphinGemma will help the
CHAT system recognize when a dolphin is copying the sound, so the researchers can give it the right object.
The company will get plans to let other researchers use DolphinGemma for free. This will help them study
other animals, like bottlenose dolphins. At the same time, other teams of scientists are also using AI to try to
understand the sounds of crows and whales.
