The Chinese pingfeng (屏风) is a traditional Chinese furniture (家具). It first appeared (出现) in the Han Dynasty. “Pingfeng” means “keeping away from wind” and pingfeng was used for (被用来) that in the beginning.
As time passes, it has different sizes and there are colourful paintings on it. For example, you can see a dragon on the pingfeng. It means light, growth, and water that gives life. It also stands for nobility (高贵) and power. The peacock (孔雀), a beautiful bird, can be seen on it, too. It’s a symbol (象征) of long life. Beautiful flowers, which mean being rich and good luck, are also a popular design of the pingfeng. All the designs carry people’s beautiful wishes.
Behind the pingfeng lies an interesting story. In the past, men should not see the unmarried girls (未婚女子). Only her father, brothers or very close male (男性) cousins can see her. When a young man came to visit, she could secretly (偷偷地) watch him from behind the screen which completely hid her. Her father would talk about poems with the young man and ask him to create (创造) one. If both the daughter and her father liked the young man’s poem and his looks, she might agree to marry (嫁) him.

Everyone has their own way to protect our planet—some pick up rubbish, and others stop using plastic bags. But for composer (作曲家) Liang Haoyi, he chooses music. Through his new work Tree, Liang calls on people to protect trees and respect nature.
Tree is made up of five movements(乐章). The first part brings people into a lively forest. Sweet birdsong is heard with the sound of leaves waving gently in the wind. As the forest turns quiet, a cello (大提琴) starts to sing softly. It sounds like a tree telling its peaceful life story. In the next movement, the music becomes faster. It brings to mind the sad scene of people cutting down trees one by one. The forest becomes impossible to see slowly as the music goes on. Then, the third part shows how people feel sorry for cutting down trees. They start to ask themselves what they should do to make things right. After that comes a powerful movement. People take action to plant new trees and rebuild the nature. The final movement is filled with bright tunes(曲调), with people finally bringing back the green mountains.
Before he started writing Tree, Liang took a walk deep into the forests, with his ears fully open. The beautiful sounds of trees, birds and the wind were like a special gift to his ears, giving him lots of ideas for his music.
Liang hopes people could hear the message in his music. “To some people, one tree may seem unimportant, but a forest starts to lose its life as soon as the first tree falls,” he said. “I hope everyone will care for every tree. If we all work on it together, small trees can grow into great forests, and forests can grow into green mountains.”

I often have outdoor activities with my friends because we can learn a lot from them. Last summer, we went hiking in the mountains. During the activity, we climbed steep hills and crossed a clear stream by jumping from stone to stone. We also collected leaves of different shapes and colors to make bookmarks. What made it unforgettable was that we met a local villager. He told us stories about the mountain and taught us some survival skills. This experience was unforgettable because it let me touch nature closely and understand local culture. I learned that nature is full of wonders and we should respect it.
