Anna Giannotti, an art psychotherapist who is paid a few hours a week by KIB, says: “Sometimes the elderly are hesitant to get involved, but often when they do get involved, they just become their complete selves. I feel very humbled. It could be the day, I feel the fullness of the older generation refreshing. I really enjoyed the session where we talked about what the residents did when they were younger.”
The youngest volunteer of the day, Manuela Inalla, 16, finds the frankness of the older generation refreshing. “I found out how people go outside all of the time but now we are all indoors so it has helped me realize the importance of going outside.”

A watched pot never boils, but time has wings when you’re having fun. The familiar saying has a basis in solid science — our sense of time does expand and contract depending on the way we experience the world. Even delicate visual features can affect how we perceive time. New research shows more memorable images seem to last longer.
Martin Wiener, head of the research, says the finding helps reveal how the brain’s time-bending strategy allows it to process and remember more information. While what is actually happening in the brain when time seems to expand remains unclear, scientists suspect it may have something to do with helping the brain process more information in limited time.
This is especially relevant to the brain’s visual system which, subjected to information overload, has to rank in order of importance, allowing for limited resources. Recent research has shown some images are more naturally memorable than others.
To understand how this memorability of an image, along with a few simpler visual features such as scene size and disorder, might relate to our subjective sense of time, Wiener and his colleagues conducted related experiments, in which subjects were shown images with varying durations and were asked to categorize whether the length of time on the screen was either “short” or “long”. The next day they were given a surprise memory test to see which images they recalled seeing.
The researchers found larger scene sizes seemed to extend time while more disorderly scenes seemed to reduce the perceived duration. Besides, the subjects perceived that more memorable images remained on the screen longer, even if they were all presented for the same amount of time. To find the underlying factor, the team fed the same memorability-ranked images to a neural network modeled after the brain’s visual system and found more memorable images were processed faster.
The explanation for why our brain’s faster processing would slow time is that it’s increasing the amount of information it can take in at once. Limited resources to process information may act as a sort of bottleneck, which the brain can widen when it needs to absorb more information, thus dilating time.
281. What does the saying "A watched pot never boils" describe
A. The unnoticed passage of time.
B. The feeling that time passes heavy/slow.
C. The hardship of preparing outside.
D. The perception that time is confusing.
29. How does the brain’s visual system handle information
A. By setting priorities.
B. By comparing similar series.
C. By sorting randomly.
D. By screening out complex images.
30. Which of the images seems to last longest if shown on the screen from equal distance
A. B. C. D.
31. What is the main purpose of the passage
A. To contrast sayings with scientific findings.
B. To explain visual features' effect on memory.
C. To describe brain's information overloading in time perception.
D. To explore link between memorability and subjective time.
D
It’s Sunday evening, and you’re reviewing another week of progress on five different goals without truly moving the needle on any. You worked out twice, read 20 pages of that business book, spent quality time with family, and kept up with your meditation practice. You’re doing everything right according to the productivity experts. So why does meaningful change feel so difficult to achieve
The accepted wisdom tells us progress comes from small, consistent changes that compound over time. Consistency has its place. But there’s another dimension to transformation we rarely discuss: the catalytic power of intense productivity bursts. It’s this more intense, temporary mode of obsession that is key.
Productivity experts often advocate sustainable habits and warn against the dangers of going too hard. But neuroscience reveals something fascinating: Our brains respond strongly to intensity.
Our brains are highly malleable; they change, sometimes in dramatic ways, to reflect new acquisition of skills and knowledge. Researchers studied London taxi drivers preparing for a test that involved memorizing 25,000 streets. When they examined the brains of these taxi drivers before and after this intensive study period, they discovered something remarkable: The posterior hippocampus, crucial for spatial navigation, physically enlarges.
This finding points to a broader principle in human neuroscience: Transformation often requires crossing intensity levels that moderate effort simply can’t reach. At the level of the brain, intense learning looks very different than the slow, consistent gains we’re more familiar with. Research finds that during periods of intense focus, our brains exhibit transient hypofrontality. The prefrontal cortex, largely responsible for self-monitoring, tends to quiet down, mirroring what is often seen in “flow states,” where the boundaries between self and task dissolve.
Most of us live in maintenance mode. We do enough not to lose ground but rarely enough to truly advance. Maybe it’s time we stopped feeling guilty about our occasional obsessions and started seeing them for what they are: the catalysts that make our steady progress meaningful.
32. What does the scene presented in paragraph 1 indicate
A. Unrealistic goals can lead to failure.
B. Constant failures may cause frustration.
C. Multitasking can not enhance productivity.
D. Sustained effort may not yield real progress.
33. What does the underlined word “malleable” in paragraph 4 probably mean
A. Repairable.
B. Adaptable.
C. Delicate.
D. Analytical.
3. What happens during “transient hypofrontality”
A. You let down your guard.
B. You exercise more self-regulation.
C. You feel at one with the task.
D. You experience a state of confusion.
35. What is a suitable title for the text
A. Why Intense Focus Beats Steady Habits
B. The Key to Transformation: Consistency
C. How Changing Your Habits Leads to Growth
D. Maintenance Mode: A Common Productivity Trap

Don’t Rush Through Books
I love books. I love reading. I do it as much as I can. I tell people they should do the same. But when I hear that people are using apps to try to read more in less time, I just shake my head. Guys, you’re doing it wrong! Reading is like eating, dating and traveling. The whole point is that it’s pleasurable and meaningful. 36 __________
Unfortunately, reading always fills its vicinities in seeking productivity storms. People may rush through books over dinner table to save ten minutes, but willingly fly across the country for a three-day conference where nothing gets accomplished. Actually, such an act tends to be as narrow wise and not found foolish. 37 ________ Simply put: You don’t need to squeeze reading into the in-between moments of your life. You need to squeeze out non-essentials and make reading, and reading well, the priority.
Once on a flight, I was surrounded by businessmen—the type of people who would say things like “I’m too busy to read” and what were they doing on this flight Watching videos, texting or chatting. No boy to read. And when were they doing on this flight Watching videos, texting or chatting. The only one reading was me. But it wasn’t finishing a book that I was reading. 38_________ The book was about a man’s attempt to restore Coronado’s expedition on horseback. I was transported from that plane to the desert.
Remember: quality over quantity. 39_________ The time you spend reading them, the time you carved out and gave to the process—that’s what you’ll remember at the end of your life. That is the prize.
In a world of constant change, where we’re always seeking innovation and 40______ , it’s easy to forget that some things are 41 just the way they are. When the foundation is strong, there’s no need to 42 much vital progress can make ourselves.
A. But we must forget to love ground enough to truly advance.
B. Maybe it’s time we stopped being guilty about our occasional obsessions and started seeing them for what they are.
C. Just remember: we don’t get a prize at the end of your life for having read as many books as possible.
D. And from that, everything else, the more you read, the better you get, and the more you want to read. So you should.
E. It was those quiet, reflective hours.
F. You’re not supposed to rush through it.
G. Never miss the chance to win the prize.

One day, after cleaning up all the mess my kids had made, I went out for a walk. I passed a gym. I looked away. Healthy people went there, but this was not me. While turning away, I saw an ad for a six-month fitness challenge. I continued my fat walk in the opposite direction, but that sign just stayed on my mind.
I still remember what finally motivated me to sign up for the challenge. It was a ten-minute period in which my son threw his spaghetti plate straight up, sending noodles and sauce flying everywhere. As soon as my husband got home, I said, “You’re in charge.”
I made a beeline for the gym, marched straight in and said, “Fix me.” And I was assigned a young fit trainer. She asked what my goals were for the six-month challenge. At that moment, I was speechless. Noticing my embarrassment, Emily just handed me the heaviest weights had in my lift, and said, “Okay, so in six months you will compete in a body-building show.” I tried explaining, “No, I don’t want to do a show. That sounds scary.” She ignored my fear, and we jumped into strict workouts and nutrition planning.
Over the next six months, Emily freed me no to focus on myself. I got what I wants and my needs. I learned to see food as strength and sweat as progress. I learned how to fuel my body instead of starving it, balancing proteins, carbs and fats. And she pushed me past my limits, correcting my form instead of serving it, balancing me on when I wanted to quit. I improved every day in the gym.
