Fiona Reilly is a senior emergency physician. Her first answer to what the key to good healthcare is might be a little unexpected.
Dr Reilly says doctors often don’t allow patients to share their stories, which could include the feelings, concerns and experiences they bring into a medical consultation that impact their medical interactions. She points to a 2019 US study that looked into the time it takes before a doctor interrupts a patient for the first time. “It’s 11 seconds,” she says. “But when patients are given that space, their experience is vastly different-and so is the feeling they walk away with.”
Dr Reilly recalls meeting a family at her emergency department several years ago. Their three-year-old daughter had a fever and doctors treating her believed it was likely a common illness. But the family remained highly anxious about the child’s illness. It led the doctors to do a number of extra tests, which increased the complexity and cost for the patient and to the system. The tests returned as normal, but the family’s concern was still there. Therefore, Dr Reilly was brought in to give a second opinion. The first thing she did was speak with the child’s mother. The mother explained that years earlier, she sensed something was not right with her pregnancy and sought medical care. At the hospital, she’d been reassured that everything was okay after a number of tests. But, sadly, she lost the baby in the end.
“As the mother told her story, I understood why she was so worried about this child today,” Dr Reilly says. “The storyteller has power. The more patients feel listened to, the more likely they are to have closer and more productive relationships with their medical providers.”
“A good doctor needs scientific knowledge and technical skill,” she says. “But they also need insight and the ability to listen and interpret a story. And they need a moral framework in which to situate that so that they can make a deep and important and trusting connection with their patients.”
24. What can be inferred from the 2019 US study
A.Doctors cut patients off quickly.
B.Patients annoyed doctors easily.
C.Patients hated talking to doctors.
D.Doctors talked to patients anxiously.
25. Why did the family remain highly anxious
A.The doctors gave wrong tests.
B.They had a terrible experience.
C.The daughter had a serious illness.
D.The treatment cost was rather high.
26. What does Dr Reilly mean when she says “the storyteller has power”
A.Patients can ask doctors for more tests.
B.Patients can tell their stories to the doctors.
C.Patients can treat doctors in their own way.
D.Patients can influence doctors’ understanding.
27. What is the last paragraph mainly about
A.The value of good doctors.
B.The role of technical skills.
C.The way of gaining patients’ trust.
D.The standard of doctors’ moral behavior.
C
A wildfire burns in the hills of a Los Angeles suburb, leaping from one land of dry brush to another as it approaches a group of homes. The landscaping at the first house burns, but the house itself stubbornly refuses to catch fire: any small flames that start along its walls or roof quickly die out. There’s no water in sight — the flames are being stopped by sound waves. This kind of fire suppression may soon play a vital role in fighting wildfires.
The key ingredients for a fire are heat, fuel and oxygen; take one away, and the flames fade. Sound waves can kill a fire by pushing oxygen molecules (分子) away from the fuel, preventing the fire getting the air it needs to continue burning. Geof Bruder, who researched heat energy transformation at NASA, co-founded Sonic Fire Tech to build a sound-generating machine for this purpose. “It’s basically vibrating the oxygen faster than the fuel can use it, so you block the chemical reaction,” Bruder says.
“The influence of sound on flames is well known,” says Albert Simeoni, head of the department of fire protection engineering at Massachusetts. “The challenge is to expand the technology without creating disrupting or even damaging sound effects.” Sonic solves this challenge by using infra sound (次声波). While previous efforts used sound waves in the range of 30 to 60 hertz, which can be produced with simpler equipment, Sonic stays at or below 20 hertz. These waves can’t be heard by people, and they travel farther than higher-frequency waves.
“Sound waves can affect fire strongly, but they work only on small flames,” says Arnaud Trouvé. Nevertheless, homeowners and companies are ready to give it a try: Sonic is working with two California companies to demonstrate its technology. Homeowners have also signed contracts with the company, which is aiming to have 50 pilot tests early in 2026.
28. What does the underlined word “suppression” mean in paragraph 1
A.Prevention. B.Stimulation. C.Detection. D.Promotion.
29. How does the sound-generating machine work
A.It cuts off the chemical energy.
B.It takes away the essential fuel.
C.It speeds up the oxygen vibration.
D.It cools down the heat temperature.
30. How was the problem of sound effects solved
A.By improving simpler equipment.
B.By broadening wave frequency range.
C.By employing lower-frequency waves.
D.By promoting production of the device.
31. What can we learn from Arnaud Trouvé’s words
A.He doubts the economic prospect.
B.He implies the technical limitation.
C.He celebrates the potential application.
D.He encourages more demonstration.

Today, concrete production accounts for roughly 8 percent of global carbon emissions, which is about a quarter of all industry carbon emissions. Fortunately, the ancient Romans might have taught us a thing or two about manufacturing concrete that lasts for thousands of years.
A new study has strictly analyzed the raw materials and energy demands of the ancient recipe of Roman concrete, revealing some useful ways to improve modern cement (水泥). Surprisingly, researchers found that producing Roman concrete requires more water and more greenhouse gas emissions than commonly used concrete today. But while the initial energy costs may be higher, it may not need to be replaced or repaired as often.
It’s hard to compare the longevity of Roman concrete to modern concrete, because today, many concrete buildings and structures are reinforced with steel. As steel rusts (生锈), it expands, forcing any surrounding concrete to crack and degrade in as little as a decade. By comparison, ancient Roman concrete is capable of restoring itself. This means that when cracks appear in the cement, they are naturally glued back together when water leaks in. That’s part of the water reason ancient Roman seawalls have lasted for centuries, despite the constant erosion (侵蚀) of seawater.
Daniela Martinez, lead author and engineer of the University of the North acknowledges that longer-lasting cement structures “can only partially balance out increased demand for new material,” but Roman manufacturing methods may also hold other environmental benefits.
Roman concrete produces far fewer dangerous air pollutants, possibly because the limestone, the main ingredient of Roman concrete, is burned using clean wood, not fossil (化石) fuels. According to recent models, using Roman cement techniques could reduce harmful gas emissions by up to 98 percent compared to modern methods. “There are a lot of lessons that we can draw from the Romans. If we can incorporate their strategies with our modern innovative ideas, we can create a more sustainable built environment.” says Martinez.
32. How does the author present the background of the study
A.By giving examples.
B.By providing statistics.
C.By defining a concept.
D.By describing a scene.
33. What can be inferred about Roman concrete
A.It has a short service life.
B.It needs regular maintenance.
C.It proves sustainable over time.
D.It requires low initial energy costs.
34. Which word can best describe the property of ancient Roman concrete
A.Ever-lasting. B.Self-healing. C.Easy-cutting. D.Safe-guarding.
35. What can be a suitable title for the text
A.Green Living, A New Path.
B.Carbon Crisis, A Modern Issue.
C.Magic Power, A Roman Mystery.
D.Ancient Recipe, A Possible Solution.

Mistakes are an unavoidable part of life. They can range from minor errors to significant missteps that change our life’s direction. Instead of getting lost in regret, it’s crucial to learn how to heal and grow from those experiences. 36 Here are the tips you can try the next time you want to forgive yourself.
Understand the impact of past mistakes.
Past mistakes often leave emotional marks. Feelings such as guilt, shame, and regret can overshadow our lives. Recognizing how these emotions affect us is the first step to healing. It’s vital to remember that making mistakes is a normal part of being human. 37 Embracing this shared experience can help you approach it with understanding rather than harsh judgment.
38
Releasing guilt and shame is essential for healing. These negative feelings can trap you in a loop of self-blame. To break free, start by reflecting on your mistake and its consequences. Self-compassion is key. Treat yourself as you would treat a friend who made a similar mistake. Remind yourself that everyone fails and that your past actions do not define your worth.
Learn from mistakes.
Every error comes with a lesson. Identifying these lessons is crucial. Spend time analyzing what went wrong. For instance, if poor time management led to missing a deadline at work, consider strategies to improve this skill. 39 Write about the mistake and the lessons learned. This not only helps you think clearly but also creates a record of your growth.
Embrace change and move forward.
After releasing guilt and learning from errors, it’s time to embrace change. Set new, realistic goals based on your lessons learned. This could be as simple as committing to improving a specific skill within three months. 40 For example, if you want to enhance your decision-making skills, practice making small, low-risk decisions daily. This will build your confidence over time.
A.Practice mindfulness.
B.Let go of guilt and shame.
C.Everyone messes up at some point.
D.Easier said than done though, right
E.Consider adopting supportive habits.
F.Life is a mixture of pleasure and pain.
G.Journaling can be a useful tool for this.

Mark had a secret: he couldn’t ride a bike. It wasn’t because he never tried. His father taught him one summer when he was seven. He ran alongside him, holding the seat, and shouting “Keep pedalling (踩踏板)!” But Mark’s balance was terrible. He fell into the bushes, and both knees bled. After two weeks of trying, his dad sighed, “Maybe next year.” But that “next year” never came. The childhood shame stayed with him.
Then, he grew up and had a family of his own. He never shared the secret with anyone but his wife, Lena. Most of the time, it didn’t matter. When friends invited him on bike trips, he volunteered to drive and bring snacks. When the kids were old enough to learn to ride, Lena offered to teach them.
But lately, his twelve-year-old daughter Alice and seven-year-old son Bob were planning the first-ever “Family Bike Adventure.” They had picked a campsite by the lake and mapped a biking route around it. Every night, they’d argue about who would win the family race. Mark smiled through every conversation, but inside, his stomach tightened. In every other way, Mark was a perfect dad. He never missed a school event and could fix everything in the house. Admitting he couldn’t ride That was hard.
So he made a plan. After the kids went to bed, he slipped out and wheeled a bike to the empty market parking lot to practise. But thirty years after that summer, his body still remembered nothing. The bike seemed to have a mind of its own, and he just couldn’t control it. His legs shook. His hands ached. Sometimes he would crash into the wall.
The next day, Alice, a considerate girl, asked about his bruised knees. But he said nothing. After several nights, Lena said to him, “You don’t have to do this. The kids don’t care. No one can do everything.” Mark shook his head. “Let me try a little longer.”
One night, after he fell off the bike again, he heard a voice. “Dad ” His heart stopped.
It was Alice, who had followed him out of curiosity.

Students’ Preferred Ways of Reading After
Recently our school did a survey on students’ reading ways after class. Most students prefer reading on phones, for it is convenient. Some choose paper books, which can protect eyes. A few like reading on e-readers.
I recommend paper books. They help us focus better and feel the charm of reading. Let’s enjoy reading with real books.
第二节 参考范文
It was Alice, who had followed him out of curiosity. Seeing her father’s embarrassed look, Alice comforted him gently. She said she understood his wish not to disappoint them. She told Mark that his love and company meant far more than riding bikes. Deeply moved, Mark finally let go of his worry and shared his childhood story with his daughter.
That Saturday, when his family went biking, Mark stayed at the campsite happily. He prepared delicious food and waited for them. When the kids came back, they shared their fun experiences excitedly. Mark laughed and chatted with them. He realized that true happiness lies in mutual understanding and warm family time.
