Can you believe it Middle school textbooks are leaving classrooms and showing up in the most amazing places— like the Great Pyramid of Giza in Egypt and Big Ben in London! This fun trend is called a “treasure hunt” and it’s getting popular online. Chinese travelers take their old textbooks to the famous spots printed on the book covers, and then hide them in secret corners for the next lucky person to find.
A traveler named Xiao Jiayu recently joined the game. She followed the information online and found a small stone hole near the pyramids. Then she brushed the sand off it with a stick carefully. Finally, she found a history book! When she pulled the history book from the small stone hole, she felt really excited! It was the same kind of book she used to read in middle school. She didn’t know who left it, but lifting that book in front of the ancient pyramids felt really special.
In London, another visitor had a bigger surprise—she found six textbooks near Big Ben in just one morning, with sweet handwritten notes like“Keep trying, you’ re great!” and“Travel to other places, and find your true self.” These little messages made her day!
People who join this treasure hunt are very careful with the books. They put waterproof covers on them and leave new pens to help the “textbook relay” go on. For the players, this isn’t just a game—it’s a wonderful experience. Old textbooks are like a bridge between their childhood dreams and adult life, and the handwritten notes make a special connection between strangers who speak Chinese. As one popular comment says, “We use English to travel around the world, but Chinese is the language that connects our hearts.”

We gave Merrick two rooms at the back of the hospital. One room was a bathroom, so he could have a bath every day. Soon his skin was much better.
The second room had a bed, table, and chairs. He had never had a room of his own before. I visited him every day, and talked to him. He loved reading, and talking about books. He was very happy.
But sometimes it was difficult for him. One day a new nurse came to the hospital. She took his food to his room, and opened the door. Then she screamed, and ran out of the room.
I was very angry with the nurse, and went to see Merrick. To my surprise, he didn’t move and just watched her as she cried.
“People don’t like looking at me. I know that,” he said. “They usually laugh or scream.”
“Well, I don’t want nurses to laugh at you, Joseph,” I said angrily. “I want them to help you. This is your home now.”
“Thank you, doctor,” he said, in his strange slow voice. “But it’s not important. I understand that.”
In his one good hand, he had the little picture of his mother. He looked at the picture for a minute. A tear ran out of his eye and down the skin of his ugly face.
“Dr Treves,” he said, slowly. “You and the nurses are very kind. Thank you very much. But I know I can’t stay here long, and…I would like to live in a lighthouse, or a home for blind people. I think those are the best places for me.”
“What do you mean ” I asked.
He did not look at me. He put the flower on the picture and looked at it carefully.
“Nobody could look at me in a lighthouse, so I would be happy there. And blind people can see nothing, so they couldn’t see me, could they ”
“But Joseph,” I said. “This is your home. You aren’t going to leave the hospital.”
“You are a kind man, Dr. Treves. But I can’t stay here very long. I have no money.”
I smiled. “Joseph,” I said. “You can stay here all your life. This will always be your home.”
He was very quiet for a minute. Then he stood up, and walked up and down the room very quickly. A strange sound came from him, like laughing.

①Have you heard of“the giant panda of the water” The Yangtze River is its home. It is a very good swimmer. Flipping, nodding and jumping are easy for it in the water. It is the Yangtze finless porpoise (江豚), which lives only in the Yangtze River.
②The Yangtze River is the cradle of Chinese civilization (中华文明的摇篮). It starts from the Tanggula Mountains on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and is over 6,300 kilometers long. It flows through eleven provincial-level regions and finally runs into the East China Sea. It is China’s longest river and the third longest river in the world.
③The Yangtze River is also called “China’ s mother river”. It is very important to the environment. With ecosystems like forests and wetlands, the river is home to many plants and animals, such as giant pandas, Yangtze finless porpoises and ginkgo trees. Wetlands help protect water resources and improve water quality.
④However, in recent years, the plants and animals in the Yangtze River have faced problems because of environmental pollution. To solve this, the government made a plan in 2016 to protect the great river. In the years since then, many good changes have taken place.
⑤Thousands of factories have been closed, improved or moved away to stop polluted water from running into the river. At the same time, new green businesses have appeared. For example, in a park, a company makes paper products in a way that is 100 percent biodegradable (可分解的). Technology also helps a lot. Since 2021, Chongqing has built an AI system to watch fishing and pollution. So far, it has connected over 1,200 cameras and dozens of drones to find illegal (非法的) fishing and pollution risks.
⑥Flood control and prevention are also important for people living along the river. Now scientists use a digital twin of the Yangtze to help with floods. The digital twin uses big data, AI and the Internet of things to collect information and send it to a control center. A 3D model on the computer shows the real conditions of the river. With this system, flood warnings can be sent earlier, so people can move to safe places in time.
⑦▲ The main part of the Yangtze River has kept Class II water quality, which is the second best level, for six straight years. Now, we all need to start with ourselves—not littering, not pouring untreated water. If everyone did this, it would make a big difference.
34.According to the following map, what is the general flow direction of the Yangtze River
A. From east to west. B. From west to east.

If you look around your city, you might see girls wearing Hanfu in subways or people wearing T-shirts with Chinese characters on the streets. A new trend is taking hold in China — guochao.
According to a recently published report, searches related to guochao on a lifestyle information platform have risen by 170 percent from the same period last year, and reviews have risen by nearly 40 percent. Guochao is rising, but what is it
The term describes the growth of China’s local fashion trends. It has widened the idea of “Made in China”, which has been known as the representation of Chinese culture and beauty contained in home-grown Chinese brands, according to CGTN.
For example, White Rabbit, whose sweet candy brings back childhood memories for many, introduced its perfume (香水) and lip balm. “We want White Rabbit to be a brand that young people want to share,” Shen Qinfeng, the company’s marketing manager said.
Now, guochao is “moving to the next stage, where its success will depend on gaining cultural confidence rather than Western validation”, according to the founder of a brand strategy consultancy.
No matter how the guochao trend develops, there’s one thing that won’t change: “Behind the craze is people’s positive attitude toward the country’s development and their recognition of and growing confidence in national culture,” said Yao Linqing, a professor in the School of Economics and Management at Communication University of China.

In the future, I plan to study hard to enter a good university and major in environmental protection. I believe that with effort, my youth will shine brightly and fulfill my duty to society.
