My friend Tim was one of five children. His father was an alcoholic and died very young, and his mother was unable to support the family. Unfortunately, the children were separated and placed in foster homes (收养家庭).
Tim dropped out of school and did nothing to further himself. He eventually went through a divorce. Tim’s brother, although experiencing the same childhood, educated himself and got a good job. He has a happy family and a wonderful home.
Both brothers gave a similar answer when asked why their lives turned out the way they did. They said, “You’d turn out this way too if you had a childhood like mine.” Neither of the brothers could change his past, but one of them adjusted (调整) his sail.
It doesn’t take much to find an excuse whether that is our family background, our lack of education, or that we live in the wrong city, or do not know the right people. Each one of these excuses has a solution. However, if you believe that there is nothing you can do to turn your life around, then you won’t be able to change your life for the better.
If you really desire to turn your life to a new course, to set your sail to a different port, it is a matter of choice. If you choose to move forward, the easiest way is to find a solution to your today’s situation. Solutions are there if you want to go after them. Sure, it may take some hard work, or the willingness to take a risk. But if you do not, then you will never have a different or happy life. Do not limit yourself by finding an excuse; only limit yourself by refusing to have an excuse.

Riding a bike and often wearing a blue hat, John Butler, an 84-year-old former farmer from Derbyshire, England, has become a spiritual (精神的) guide to a growing number of devoted fans.
Butler, an early advocate of organic farming, is a long-time follower of meditation (冥想). As part of his spiritual journey, he began recording inspiring messages in the hope of sharing the lessons he’d learned with others.
The peaceful tone, calming presence, a voice like a warm glass of milk, in which Butler delivered his plain view of life online, soon struck a chord(引起共鸣) with a rising number of people struggling to free themselves from the day-to-day anxiety caused by COVID-19.
Butler became famous in a 2016 BBC interview. After the interview, he was picked out by members of the Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response (ASMR) community as someone worth attention not just for what he said, but for the manner in which he said it. Since then, this senior’s popularity has grown.
Having always considered himself something of a “misfit (格格不入的人)” in society, Butler was much more surprised by his popularity than anyone else. Before his ongoing video project, Butler said he had never heard of YouTube and had little knowledge of the Internet. But Butler feels lucky to be able to provide a good influence for people just doing their best to deal with modern-day life.

When you feel thankful for things you’ve received or something that has happened, that’s gratitude. Gratitude is how you relate to others, when you see yourself in connection with things larger than yourself.
Last year, I felt compelled (强迫的) to bake cookies for complete strangers to say “thank you”.However, what occurred later changed my view about it. One day, I had to call 999 because I found my partner unconscious on the floor. Within minutes, a police car and an ambulance arrived, filled with first responders who took my partner away to the nearest hospital, where he received the critical care he needed.
A week later, still impressed by the kindness of the strangers, I wrote thankyou notes to those helpful first responders and baked for them. It was a small gesture with a big impact ...When I dropped off stillwarm cookies at the police and the fire station, they thanked me for delivering gifts. Thanking me All I’d done was baking, however, they’d saved a life.
I drove away feeling light and happy, partly because I’d done a good deed, but mostly because I was amazed that there are great people who do lifesaving work and expect nothing in return.
Later, I realized that my natural high might have been more than what it seemed. Sharing thoughts of gratitude and performing acts of kindness can boost your mood. Gratitude really does have an impact on happiness, which increases life satisfaction. I am the one who indeed benefits from expressing thanks. Then why not thank others

A MOTHER’S DAY SURPRISE
The twins were filled with excitement as they thought of the surprise they were planning for Mother’s Day. How pleased and proud Mother would be when they brought her breakfast in bed. They planned to make French toast and chicken porridge. They had watched their mother in the kitchen. There was nothing to it. Jenna and Jeff knew exactly what to do.
The big day came at last. The alarm rang at 6 a.m. The pair went down the stairs quietly to the kitchen. They decided to boil the porridge first. They put some rice into a pot of water and left it to boil while they made the French toast. Jeff broke two eggs into a plate and added in some milk. Jenna found the bread and put two slices into the egg mixture. Next, Jeff turned on the second stove burner to heat up the frying pan. Everything was going smoothly until Jeff started frying the bread. The pan was too hot and the bread turned black within seconds. Jenna threw the burnt piece into the sink and put in the other slice of bread. This time, she turned down the fire so it cooked nicely.
Then Jeff noticed steam shooting out of the pot and the lid starting to shake. The next minute, the porridge boiled over and put out the fire. Jenna panicked. Thankfully, Jeff stayed calm and turned off the gas quickly. But the stove was a mess now. Jenna told Jeff to clean it up so they could continue to cook the rest of the porridge. But Jeff’s hand touched the hot burner and he gave a cry of pain. Jenna made him put his hand in cold water. Then she caught the smell of burning. Oh dear! The piece of bread in the pan had turned black as well.
As the twins looked around them in disappointment, their father appeared.

The twins carried the breakfast upstairs and woke their mother up. Seeing the food beside her bed, Mother was greatly surprised and moved.
