The first time I heard the erhu was in a small teahouse in Shanghai. A man sat in the corner, his eyes closed, drawing a melody so sorrowful it seemed to pour from the depths of history. I was 16, visiting China for the first time, and I had never heard anything like it. That moment changed my life.
I later learned that the piece was Moon Reflected on Second Spring, composed (作曲) by the blind musician Abing in the early 20th century. Abing, who lived in poverty, created over 200 pieces, but only six survive. His music, rooted in folk traditions, expresses both personal pain and the spirit of a changing China.
I decided to learn the erhu. Back in my hometown in Canada, I found a teacher — an elderly Chinese immigrant who had played in a traditional orchestra in Beijing. For two years, I practiced scales and vibrato, my fingers blistering. But mastering the instrument is not just about technique; it’s about understanding the stories behind the music. My teacher would say, “When you play, you are not yourself. You become the wind, the water, the longing.”
Today, I play in a small ensemble (剧团) that mixes Eastern and Western instruments. Audiences often tell me they feel transported. For me, the erhu is a bridge — between cultures, between past and present. It reminds me that some connections don’t need translation.

“Red tourism”, a new form of travel where people visit important historical sites and monuments (纪念碑). It has improved the development of the tourism industry in summer. And red tourism becomes more popular during the National Day Golden Week holiday.
Ticket bookings for red tourism sites in June increased by five times with local and short trips to red tourism sites being the choice of about 88 percent of such tourists. And the search for the term “red tourism” on Mafengwo, a Chinese travel service and social-networking platform (平台), increased by 300 percent during the summer holidays.
Red tourism is not only about the joy of visiting a new place and enjoying the wonderful sights. It is also about gaining knowledge about history and being inspired by the stories of the people who gave their lives to the founding of the People’s Republic in 1949 and worked for the happiness of the Chinese people. By rediscovering history and passing on the stories of the Chinese revolution (革命) and its heroes to the next generations, people can lift their spirits.
Red tourism can also be used as an opportunity to develop rural (农村的) areas because most of the red tourism sites are in the countryside. It can raise the incomes (收入) of local people. Since red tourism creates jobs and helps increase farmers’ incomes, it contributes to local economic development.
Data show that this year, there are about 2 billion tourists visiting red tourism sites, and its market size nearly reaches 1 trillion. Yet red tourism faces some developmental problems, mainly because some local government officials have failed to make the best use of red tourism resources for local development.

New research challenges the widespread belief that artificial intelligence (AI) is driving a major rise in global greenhouse gas emissions. Scientists from the University of Waterloo and the Georgia Institute of Technology analyzed U.S. economic data alongside estimates of how frequently AI tools are used across different industries. Their aim was to understand what might happen to the environment if AI adoption increases along its current path.
According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, 83 percent of the nation’s economic activity relies on petrol, coal and natural gas. These fuels release greenhouse gases when burned. The researchers noted that total energy use from AI in the U.S. matched the electricity consumption of Iceland, yet this amount remained insignificant when viewed at national or global levels.
“It is important to note that the increase in energy use is not going to be uniform. It’s going to be felt more in the places where electricity is produced to power the data centers,” said Dr Juan Moreno-Cruz, a professor at the School of Environment, Enterprise and Development at the University of Waterloo and Canada Research Chair in Energy Transitions. “If you look at that energy from the local perspective, that’s a big deal because some places could see double the amount of electricity output and emissions. But at a larger scale, AI’s use of energy won’t be noticeable.”
“For people who believe that the use of AI will be a major problem for the climate and think we should avoid it, we’re offering a different perspective,” Moreno-Cruz added. “The effects on climate are not that significant, and we can use AI to develop green technologies or to improve existing ones.”
To develop their findings, environmental economists Moreno-Cruz and Dr Anthony Harding reviewed a variety of economic sectors, the types of jobs within those sectors, and the share of tasks that could potentially be performed by AI. Moreno-Cruz and Harding intend to apply the same approach to additional countries in order to understand how AI adoption may affect environmental outcomes across different regions of the world.
