All the Beauty in the World, Patrick Bringley’s memoir (回忆录) about his 10 years working as a guard at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art (Met), brings new meaning to the term “art appreciation”.
Bringley is not the only Met staffer to write about the institution. But Bringley’s “guard’s-eye view” is unique, and he presents his personal story with sincerity. After his brother Tom’s death in 2008, Bringley gave up his job as a journalist for a job in which “I was happy to be going nowhere”. He explains, “I had lost someone. I did not wish to move on from that. In a sense, I didn’t wish to move at all.”
All the Beauty in the World offers well-chosen cases about the museum to support Bringley’s personal tale. The Met opened in 1880 and has since expanded to more than 2.5 million square feet — “the size of about 3,000 average New York apartments”. The “salmon run of visitors” that goes up the Grand Staircase every morning when the museum opens adds up to a crowd of nearly 7 million visitors a year.
As interesting as these facts are, it’s Bringley’s reflections on dozens of individual paintings, photographs, sculptures and ancient artifacts that turn this book into a tribute (致敬) to the power of art. I think that “sometimes we need permission to stop and adore things, and a work of art gives us that”. In a Vermeer portrait of a dozing maidservant, he is moved to see that the artist captured “that feeling we sometimes have that a private setting possesses a holiness of its own. It was my constant feeling in Tom’s hospital room.”
As rich in moving insights as the Met is in treasures, All the Beauty in the World reminds us of the importance of learning not “about art, but from it” and attaining peace into art. This is art appreciation at a deep level.
24. Why did Patrick Bringley quit his job as a journalist
A.He found it stressful and meaningless.
B.He suffered from the loss of his brother.
C.He wanted to enjoy more free time.
D.He hoped to write a memoir about art.
25. What does the underlined expression “salmon run” in Paragraph 3 probably refer to
A.A large crowd of visitors moving together.
B.A special event held at the museum.
C.The steady flow of artworks into the Met.
D.The natural scenery around the museum.
26. What moved Bringley when he saw the Vermeer portrait
A.The maidservant’s peaceful look.
B.The advanced painting skills of Vermeer.
C.The private and sacred atmosphere reflected.
D.The maidservant’s experience similar to his brother’s.
27. Which can be the best title for the text
A.Learn from Art, Find Peace B.Appreciate Life, Know Art
C.Little-known Facts about the Met D.Inner Worlds of Famous Artists
C
The six degrees of separation theory holds that any two people worldwide can be linked by no more than six contacts. It has developed from a simple social idea into a useful tool for social communication, academic study and real-world practice. First introduced in 1929 as only a theory, it is now widely used in many fields and greatly influences people’s way of making connections and dealing with problems in modern society.
In social science, researchers apply the theory to explore the spread of information, ideas and even public opinions. It turns out that the hidden short chains of social connections act as efficient channels for information flow, explaining how a regional event can quickly gain global attention through layered social contacts. Businesses have also adopted this finding in marketing and public relations, using these hidden social links to promote products and enhance brand influence with higher efficiency, abandoning traditional extensive advertising strategies.
What makes the theory more valuable is its use in emergency response and resource allocation. When facing natural disasters or public crises, workers can utilize the six-degree social network to quickly locate needed resources, contact relevant personnel and deliver aid to isolated areas. This approach has greatly improved the efficiency of disaster relief, breaking through the bottlenecks of traditional communication and transportation limitations.
Nevertheless, the practical application of the theory faces undeniable challenges. Over-reliance on social connection chains may lead to the rapid spread of false information alongside valid content, as shallow online connections lack strict checking. Meanwhile, the theory only focuses on the existence of social links but ignores their quality and authenticity, meaning it cannot fully explain the complexity of deep interpersonal relationships.
As the theory continues to be developed with modern data analysis, it still serves as a powerful tool to interpret the complex web of human society. It reminds people that every social connection holds potential value, while urging us to treat social links sensibly and distinguish genuine relationships in the digital age.
28. What is the core idea of the six degrees of separation theory
A.Any two people can be connected via at most six intermediate contacts.
B.People in modern society can only communicate with six contacts.
C.The theory was first put forward in the 1920s and remains unchanged.
D.It is mainly used to solve problems in academic research.
29. How do businesses use the six-degree theory according to Paragraph 2
A.They abandon all marketing strategies and rely only on social media.
B.They focus on traditional extensive advertising to reach more customers.
C.They explore the spread of public opinions to control consumers’ choices.
D.They use hidden social connections to promote products more efficiently.
30. What advantage does the theory have in emergency response
A.It helps people distinguish genuine relationships in the digital age.
B.It prevents the spread of false information during public crises.
C.It overcomes communication and transportation bottlenecks in disaster relief.
D.It provides strict checking for online connections to ensure resource safety.
31. What is the main purpose of the text
A.To introduce the history of a well-known social theory.
B.To discuss the value and limits of a social theory.
C.To compare different uses of social network theories.
D.To encourage people to build more social connections.
D
Since Dolly the sheep was born in 1996, cell nuclear transfer cloning has developed far beyond its early lab stage. Still, it faces a clear contradiction: its scientific potential is growing faster than both technical improvements and public agreement. While people often see cloning as just a black-and-white ethical debate, the truth is more complex. Different uses of cloning have very different paths of acceptance and progress.
Therapeutic cloning (治疗性克隆) is different from reproductive cloning. It focuses on creating body cells from early embryo (胚胎) cells to treat serious diseases like serious nerve disorders and spinal cord injuries. Unlike a similar method that remakes adult body cells without using embryo cells, therapeutic cloning produces body cells with untouched genetic material in cell energy structures. This is a key advantage for treating diseases related to such genetic problems. But it still faces big challenges: low success rates in creating embryo cells, ethical concerns about giving up embryo cells, and different rules in different countries. Even where research cloning is allowed, limited financial support and public doubt have slowed its move to real medical use.
Reproductive cloning, on the other hand, is completely banned for humans everywhere. But it has found small uses in farming and protecting endangered animals. Cloned farm animals can have better disease resistance or produce more meat and milk. However, many cloned animals develop health problems, such as organ failure or oversized bodies. This has stopped it from being widely used in business. For endangered species, cloning seems like a way to save them, but attempts to clone animals like the black-footed ferret have mostly failed. The main problems are using the wrong animal as a substitute mother and incomplete genetic data. Critics also say focusing on cloning takes money away from protecting animals’ natural homes, which is a much more reliable way to save species.
People’s views on cloning are often influenced by exaggerated media stories. These stories often mix up therapeutic and reproductive cloning into one single, controversial topic. This confusion has led to unnecessary fears: people worry scientists will clone humans to use their organs or create “perfect” babies, which is not scientifically possible with today’s technology. At the same time, new techniques like gene editing have shifted public attention away from cloning. Many people think the debate about cloning is over, but that is not true. As cloning technology keeps improving, it is more important than ever to have calm, fact-based talks about it.
32. What does the author stress about cloning in Paragraph 1
A.Its technical development falls behind public expectation.
B.It is more complex than a simple ethical judgment.
C.It has reached widespread public recognition.
D.Its application is limited to laboratory research.
33. What is special about therapeutic cloning compared with the other cell-making method
A.It completely rules out moral worries related to embryo use.
B.It keeps the original genetic material of body cells unchanged.
C.It has won wide official approval across the whole world.
D.It greatly increases the success rate of embryonic cell cultivation.
34. What is a major barrier to the commercial use of reproductive cloning in agriculture
A.A global ban on cloning farm animals.
B.Potential health disorders of cloned animals.
C.A lack of disease resistance.
D.Unreliability in saving species.
35. What can we infer from the last paragraph
A.Gene editing technology has ended the debate over cloning.
B.The public holds a reasonable attitude towards cloning.
C.Media reports partly cause people’s misunderstanding of cloning.
D.Human cloning for organ use may come true soon.

You’ve probably noticed it yourself — more and more people are leaning on AI at work. Statistics show that between 2024 and 2025, the number of Americans using AI on the job nearly doubled.
As these tools become part of our daily routines, it’s natural to wonder: Is AI quietly making us forgetful, or is it giving our brains a boost ___36___ Rely too much on AI, and your memory might take a hit. But use it wisely, and it can sharpen focus and free up mental energy.
To understand how AI affects our thinking, it helps to distinguish between cognitive offloading and assisted thinking. Cognitive offloading means using external tools to handle mental tasks. ___37___ Over time, it may weaken memory. For example, heavy AI users often learn less than those who complete tasks on their own.
Assisted thinking, on the other hand, uses tools to enhance thinking without replacing it. ___38___ For instance, one study found that structured prompts (指令) can improve engagement compared with unguided AI use. In practice, this distinction matters.
In psychotherapy (心理治疗), for example, therapists must document sessions, track treatment plans, and remain fully present with patients. Now, an AI assistant can handle routine tasks — updating notes and organizing data — allowing therapists to focus fully on the interaction. ___39___
AI can also enhance how we think if used correctly. Humans have limited working memory, typically holding only three to five pieces of information at a time. ___40___ It keeps key information accessible, so our brains can focus on analyzing and problem-solving. The key is balance: offload routine tasks, but stay engaged with the thinking that matters. Use AI to amplify — not replace — your cognitive abilities.
A.The truth is probably somewhere in the middle.
B.Users stay actively involved, using AI as a partner.
C.This can free up mental resources, but comes with a cost.
D.By supporting our working memory, AI acts as a cognitive boost.
E.This kind of intentional use preserves mental energy and sharpens focus.
F.By doing so, they can engage more deeply with people they are helping.
G.The goal is not to use AI for everything, but to use it where it matters most.

Adam loved football. He loved the smell of the grass as he slid across it. And he loved the excitement when he shot the ball into the net. There was nothing in this world that could weigh the same as football in his heart. He dreamed of growing up to be a professional footballer.
Every day Adam would go to the field and practise with his friends. He still remembered when he asked to join the older boys, they teased (取笑) him, “You’re too small. Football is for big, tough players, not for someone your size.” Then when they saw he could run, kick, and shoot as well as they could, the teasing stopped. Adam played hard and really had a gift. He even became the only one in the group who could do the bicycle kick (倒挂金钩)!
One day after school, Adam went to the playground to practise as usual. The boys were talking quietly, casting excited glances at a man who was watching the field. As Adam joined the group, Captain Harold told him the man, called Mr. Smith, was looking for players for his football camp and there would be a tryout match the next day. Adam could hardly contain his excitement. The camp meant there would be professional coaches to train him! He would do anything to join it.
After the practice, Mr. Smith approached and Adam crowded close so he could see him. “Who wants to come to my football camp and really learn to play this game ” Mr. Smith asked. Excited hands shot up. Mr. Smith shook them all and shook Adam’s hand last.
“Little man, I saw you run fast,” he said. “But you are far too thin and short for my camp. You’ll get knocked down in a second.”
Adam looked down so no one would see his disappointment. “It’s not fair! Adam’s been practising with us and he’s the only one who ever did the bicycle kick!” Harold argued.

Less Screen, More Life
Nowadays, many of my classmates spend plenty of time on electronic products after class. They bury themselves in phones or pads, which not only affects their study but also does harm to their health.
To change this situation, I advocate Digital Minimalism. We should set aside more time for sports, reading and face-to-face communication. Let’s put down our screens and enjoy a healthier and more meaningful life together.
读后续写 参考范文
Inspired, Adam decided to seize the opportunity. He raised his head bravely and asked Mr. Smith to give him a chance to show his skills. He promised that he would prove size was not the most important thing in football. Moved by his courage, Mr. Smith agreed to let him take part in the tryout the next day. Adam felt overjoyed and made up his mind to give his best performance.
The next day Adam came to the tryout. He ran swiftly and passed the ball skillfully all through the match. When the chance came, he performed a perfect bicycle kick, which amazed everyone present. Mr. Smith smiled and told Adam he was admitted to the camp. Adam’s dream finally came true.
