It had been a year since Susan, thirty-four, became blind. As a result of medical accident, she was sightless. All she had to depend on was her husband Mark.
Mark was an air-force officer and he loved Susan with all his heart. When she first lost sight, he decided to use every method to help his wife.
Finally, Susan felt ready to return to her job, but how would she get there She used to take the bus, but she was now too frightened to go to work by herself. Mark suggested taking the bus with her each morning and evening.
For two weeks, Mark, in military uniform, took the bus with Susan to and from work each day. He taught her to rely on her other senses, especially her hearing. He helped her make friends with the bus drivers who could watch out for her and save her a seat.
Each morning they made the journey together, and Mark would take a taxi back to his office, although that meant he had to travel through the city. Mark knew it was only a matter of time before Susan would be able to take the bus on her own. He believed in her.
Finally, Susan decided that she was ready to start the trip on her own. Monday morning arrived. She said goodbye and, for the first time, they went their separate ways. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday — Each day on her own went perfectly.
On Friday morning, Susan took the bus to work as usual. As she was getting off the bus, the driver said," Miss, I sure envy you." Susan asked the driver why. "You know, every morning for the past week, a fine-looking gentleman in a military uniform has been standing across the corner watching you when you get off the bus. He makes sure you cross the street safely and he watches you until you enter your office building. Then he blows you a kiss, gives you a salute and walks away. You are one lucky lady," the bus driver said.
Tears of happiness poured down Susan’s cheeks. She was so lucky, for he had given her a gift more powerful than sight, the gift of love that can bring light where there is darkness.

Competitive eating has become big business. The International Federation of Competitive Eating (IFOCE) holds events for competitive eating all around the world. One of the most popular contests (竞赛) is held every 4th of July on Coney Island in New York. Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest started in 1916 and the event has been dominated (占据优势) by Takeru Kobayashi. The Japanese competitor set his first record in 2001, when he ate 50 hot dogs in 12 minutes and has won the contest six years in a row.
The main types of food eaten in the contests are fast food. Hot dogs, chicken wings, pickles, corndogs and pizza are main foods of the contests. The contests usually last from around 8 to 12 minutes. Now most of the competitors are men, but there are also women who take part in competitive eating.
Being large and overweight isn’t necessarily an advantage in competitive eating. The biggest advantage a competitor can have is the ability to actually stretch (扩张) their stomach. Many competitors will drink plenty of water over a period of time in order to achieve this. Apart from having an unusually stretchable stomach, another important thing seems to be hand to mouth speed.
The IFOCE has very strict safety guidelines laid out regarding competitive petitions must take place in a controlled area and only competitors over the age of 18 are allowed to enter. They also advise against any type of home training. There has been much talk regarding the inclusion of competitive eating as an Olympic sport. Although the IFOCE has talked about that with the Olympic committee, it seems that they will not agree to it at present.

三、语法填空(共10小题;每小题1分,满分10分)
阅读下面短文,在空白处填入1个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。
As a Chinese exchange student in the US, I was more than excited when Ne Zha 2 arrived in American ___36___(theater). With friends, I went to the cinema, a place ___37___ the atmosphere felt like home. The audience was mostly Chinese, ___38___(chat) excitedly in our native language about the film’s cultural significance. This sense of familiarity, however, was mixed with a touch of sadness.
The screening was in a small Chapel Hill theater, one of the few showing Ne Zha 2 among countless Hollywood blockbusters like Captain America 4 and Wicked. While those films had multiple daily showings and large-size posters, Ne Zha 2 ___39___(limit) to just two or three screenings a week, with no promotional presence.
Ne Zha 2 is more than a visually ___40___(attract) film; it explores topics of destiny, rebellion, and self-acceptance, which resonate deeply with Chinese audiences, especially those abroad. For international students like me, the story mirrors the challenges we meet when adapting ___41___ life in a new culture and redefining our identities.
Despite its cultural ___42___(rich), Ne Zha 2 struggles to gain popularity outside China. Even as it stands as one of China’s highest-earning films, its international revenue (票房) pales when ___43___(place) beside the success of American movies in China. This imbalance highlights a one-sided cultural exchange.
Watching Ne Zha 2 in the US was more than entertainment; it was a moment of cultural connection. It reminded me of the possibility for films ___44___(bridge) gaps and promote understanding. To achieve this, we must move beyond one-sided narratives (叙述) ___45___ create opportunities for diverse stories to be shared and valued globally.

My brother Jack and I went to visit my Aunt, who lived very near the beach. I was just 15 then and Jack 5. We loved going to the beach but normally always went with mom or dad. On our way back, we decided to walk along the beach instead of taking the taxi back home. We did not tell our aunt about all this, as she might refuse.
So off we ran to the beach, where we played happily on the sand, making little sand castles and collecting sea shells. We wrote our names on the sand only to be erased by the coming waves. We splashed (泼) water on each other’s faces, running and laughing. We had so much fun. Time passes so quickly when one is happy. Our games continued. The tide (潮水) was coming in but we were just unaware of anything.
It was beginning to get dark and we decided to move on. At one point we were shocked to see that we could not go any further as the waters had covered the place ahead. With fear we turned back. But to our surprise, the waters behind us had also touched the shore. Now we were left on a small dry patch (片) of land surrounded by water on all sides. We could not move forward, nor go back. Our only hope was a tall wall with huge rocks nearby. Climbing over it, we could get onto the road and take a taxi home.
Despite the fear, we didn’t give up, though. I decided to get Jack across the wall first. I picked him up and tried my best to get him across the wall, but we slipped (打滑) and fell from the rock into the water. He cried in pain and fear. I realized that on our own, we could never cross that big wall. Now only help from outside could save us. The ever rising water was making us frightened more and more.

读后续写 参考范文
In despair, we shouted for help, and miracle happened. Soon two men walking past heard our cries. They hurried over and found us trapped. Without hesitation, one man climbed onto the rock wall and reached out his hands. He pulled us up one by one carefully. We were finally safe on the road, feeling relieved and grateful.
After saying thanks again and again to the two men, we returned home. We told our aunt and parents what had happened. They were greatly worried and reminded us not to take risks alone again. From then on, I learned to stay alert and think twice before making decisions. This unforgettable experience has left a deep lesson in my mind.
