一、阅读理解
第一节 阅读理解(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
A
Humans are born explorers and adventurers. We have this “desire” to explore new places and to go beyond.
We have already climbed the highest mountain, explored the vastness of the Antarctica and the emptiness of Sahara. We have also reached outer space, stepped on the surface of our neighbour, the moon, and one day might even explore the vastness of our universe.
There seems to be no end to humanity’s appetite for exploring our surroundings and the unknown. However, there are still some places on Earth that have not yet been reached or fully explored. And these places are some of the most isolated and mysterious places on this planet.
Mariana Trench, Pacific Ocean Located in the western part of the Pacific Ocean, the Mariana Trench is the deepest part of the world’s oceans. The trench measures around 2,550 km long and 70 km wide on average, and reaches a depth of over 10,994 metres at one small part known as the Challenger Deep. The Mariana Trench is considered one of the least explored parts of the world due to its extreme depth. At this depth, the water pressure can be very dangerous. Still, life can be found in this part of the ocean. Previous expeditions to the trench have revealed a number of organisms and sea creatures, living in the deep sea.
Vale do Javari, Brazil With an area of about 85,444. 82 km , Vale do Javari is one of the largest indigenous territories in Brazil. The rainforest was named after the vast Javari River, which is the most important river system in the region. It is one of the most isolated places on Earth and also one of the hardest places to reach. The isolation of this remote place is largely due to the thick forest and extreme geographic location. In spite of its isolation, the tropical rainforest is home to a great number of indigenous people or Indian tribes. Those tribes, believed to be as many as 200 to 3,300 people, were first discovered through satellite images of the vast rainforest. Entering the region is prohibited by Brazilian law and the Vale do Javari is especially well-protected from outsiders and explorers by a local organisation dedicated to maintaining its rich biodiversity and protecting the forest from exploitation.
Tsingy de Bemaraha Located near the western coast of Madagascar, the Tsingy de Bemaraha has been on the list of UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1990 to protect its unique geography and preserve the mangrove forests. The place is also home to huge numbers of animals and even new species. Some of the biggest attractions in this protected reserve are the incredibly needle-shaped limestone formations. However, those formations pose great dangers to explorers. In fact, the word “Tsingy” is derived from a local word, which means “the place where one cannot walk barefoot.” The limestone formations are terribly sharp and can easily cut through flesh with deadly effect, which makes exploring them extremely difficult and dangerous. Access to this nature reserve is limited, although tourists can reach the area either by road or plane.
1. Why is the Mariana Trench considered one of the least explored places on Earth
A.It is located too far from any continent.
B.Its width makes it impossible to map accurately.
C.It lacks any signs of life or scientific value.
D.Its extreme depth leads to dangerous water pressure.
2. Based on the description of Vale do Javari, which of the following can be inferred about its indigenous tribes
A.They actively engage with modern society through trade.
B.Their existence was confirmed through technological means.
C.They rely on the Javari River for transportation to cities.
D.Their population is precisely documented by Brazilian authorities.
3. What can be concluded about the Tsingy de Bemaraha from the local meaning of “Tsingy”
A.It is a popular tourist destination for hiking enthusiasts.
B.The area is primarily covered by mangrove forests.
C.Its limestone formations are exceptionally sharp and hazardous.
D.Visitors must remove their shoes to enter the reserve.
B
At first glance, the two photos look like exact copies: a young cyclist beneath the glaciers near the Everest Base Camp, with his bike on his shoulder, face fixed in determination. The same spot, same light, same shadows. Yet they were taken 40 years apart.
The first photo shows Perce Hughes, a cycling enthusiast who set out in 1984 at the age of 22 on an adventure that took him across Europe, through Asia and eventually to Sydney. In the second, William, Perce Hughes’ son, recreated his father’s pose almost four decades later.
“I was raised on my dad’s stories,” William told Cyclists Circle, “and the adventure was always calling to me.” And so, in September 2024, also at the age of 22, he carried out a plan of pedaling from the English town of Chatsworth on a 25,000-kilometer, 19-month ride to Sydney.
Finding the right bicycle wasn’t easy. William had searched online for the steel-framed touring bike his dad rode, and finally got it for 600. Then there was the task of pinpointing where his dad’s photos were taken. He dived into records, mapping out every documented route. And for the trickier locations, he turned to AI for help. “It wasn’t always smooth, but I kept trying.” The result A striking set of images — the same places, the same poses, sometimes even the same faces.
One photo shows Perce Hughes with a young boy and his parents. William tracked down the location and, although the parents had passed away, he was able to meet and pose with the man the young boy had become.
But the recreated moment that moved him the most was the Everest shot — bike on his back, glacier in the background. “Every time I stood on the exact spot where he would have stood, I felt a deeper connection to Dad. The only thing dividing us was time. I’ve heard stories from my dad my entire life, and now I’m there in the places where those stories took place. It’s very, very special.”
4. What do we know from the two photos
A.They record the growth of a man.
B.They were shot four decades apart.
C.They display the power of nature.
D.They were taken by the same person.
5. Why did William come up with the plan
A.To challenge his own limits.
B.To recall his childhood.
C.To relive his father’s adventure.
D.To photograph the journey.
6. What does paragraph 4 mainly talk about
A.Images of different locations.
B.Worries before the adventure.
C.Memories preserved in photos.
D.Preparations made for the journey.
7. Which of the following is the best title for the text
A.Documentary of the Everest.
B.Recreated Photos Across Time.
C.Great Challenges in a Journey.
D.The Fun of Long-distance Cycling.

Human-elephant conflict is a growing issue in several areas. In Kenya, where the population and demand for resources is growing, human-inhabited areas are increasingly overlapping with elephant’s bined with the recovery of some elephant populations, this is leading to greater chance of conflict between humans and these giants.
“Expansion of agricultural land, logging, urbanization, and shrinking and fragmentation (破碎化) of elephant habitats are forcing elephants to enter human settlements in search of food and water,” says Greta Francesca Iori, an advisor on elephant conservation and human-elephant conflict. “Wherever there are elephants, there are instances and information coming through of human-elephant conflict.”
In the early 2000s, Fritz Vollrath, an ecologist, and Iain Douglas-Hamilton, founder of Save The Elephants, heard a folklore story from Kenyan pastoralists about how trees in certain areas were not damaged by elephants because they had beehives in them.
Inspired by the tale, they began working with Lucy King, co-existence director at Save the Elephants, to investigate scientifically whether bees could really scare the elephants. “They concluded elephants not only stay away from trees containing beehives of wild African honeybees, but also rumble (低吼声) to each other to tell each other to stay away.” King says.
King designed a fence made of beehives. The fence goes all around a farm, with hives placed every 10 meters between two posts. “For one acre of farmland, you need 24 beehives,” King says. “However, every other one is a dummy beehive — a fake made of just a yellow piece of plywood that gives the elephants the illusion that there are more beehives than there really are. As an elephant approaches in the dark, they don’t know which one is real and which one is fake. So it’s an illusion. And it seems to work.”
“I think it’s creative. You’ve got this natural mechanism by which you can deter these animals from approaching farms,” says Shannon, a wildlife ecologist. “Still, the study also revealed some of the weaknesses of the tool. For example, the bee populations plummeted (暴跌) during drought years due to a lack of flowering plants. The fences managed to deter only around 73% of the passing elephants.”
For now, the beehive fences are helping communities. People also believe they need to co-exist with elephants.
8. What leads to human-elephant conflict
A.Elephant habitat loss.
B.More elephant ranges.
C.Less human population.
D.Better living conditions.
9. Why are dummy beehives used in the fence
A.To attract more bees to the farm.
B.To make the fence look more beautiful.
C.To reduce the cost of building the fence.
D.To create a false appearance of more beehives.
10. What can we learn about the beehive fence from the text
A.It works better at night than during the day.
B.It is a perfect solution to human-elephant conflict.
C.Its effectiveness is affected by weather conditions.
D.It can deter all elephants from approaching farms.
11. What did Shannon think of the beehive fences
A.Promising but clumsy.
B.Controversial and risky.
C.Innovative yet imperfect.
D.Expensive yet effective.
D
One of my bad habits is saying “busy” when people ask me how I’m doing. Sometimes it’s because I actually am busy, but other times it’s because that’s what I think I’m supposed to say. That’s what important people say. That’s what people who get promoted say. But working long hours doesn’t drive better results. Never taking a vacation won’t lead to a promotion. So why are we so proud to talk about how busy we are all the time
In 2016, researchers from Columbia, Harvard, and Georgetown conducted a study to figure it out. They found busy people are perceived to be of high status, and interestingly, these status attributions are heavily influenced by our own beliefs about social mobility. In other words, the more we believe that one has the opportunity for success based on hard work, the more we tend to think that people who skip leisure and work all the time are of higher standing.
That’s why we feel like we have to appear busy, and there’s a real perception that if someone is knee-deep in meetings, emails, and stress, then they’re probably a big deal. This culture of busyness is making it hard for employees to find work-life balance. According to a recent study, one in five highly engaged employees is at risk of burnout.
Personally, I’m going to stop saying “busy” when people ask me how I am. It sounds self-righteous (自以为是的) and sets the wrong tone. Phrases like “I have limited access to email” and “I’ll respond as soon as I get back” sound like you’re being held against your will from working as opposed to making the most of your time off.
By rejecting the myth that business equals worth, we free ourselves and others from exhaustion. True success isn’t about working harder; it’s about working smarter and finding balance. Let’s redefine what it means to be productive — and start valuing rest as much as effort.
12. How does the author introduce the topic in the first paragraph
A.By quoting famous people.
B.By presenting statistical data.
C.By comparing different opinions.
D.By introducing personal experience.
13. Why do we tend to think that busy people are of high status
A.Our status can be attributed to our social mobility.
B.We hold the belief that hard work leads to success.
C.Our own opportunity for success never comes easily.
D.We find few people of high status have time for leisure.
14. What does the underlined phrase “knee-deep in” in Paragraph 3 probably mean
A.Bored with.
B.Worried about.
C.Fully involved in.
D.Very interested in.
15. What is the author’s purpose in writing the passage
A.To advise employees on how to achieve work-life balance.
B.To share his personal experience of overcoming a bad habit.
C.To introduce a study on people’s attitude towards busyness.
D.To argue against the culture of equating busyness with worth.

Tina was a high school girl who loved comparing herself with others. She always cared about the latest clothes, expensive phones, and designer bags. Whenever someone showed off a new item, she’d feel jealous and immediately turn to her parents for something better. Having no idea how to deal with it, her parents had no choice but to satisfy her. With what she wanted on, peers would follow her, flattering her from head to toe. Tina smiled, with a barely perceived sense of emptiness.
At the beginning of the fall semester, Tina noticed a new face from another class. It’s Rita, who just transferred from a neighboring school. The girl was always alone, with simple clothes and an old schoolbag, but a smile hovered on her lips wherever she went. After school, Rita never got involved in classmates’ discussions about brands or luxuries. Instead, she herself spent most of her time in the classroom, studying or helping classmates with mathematics problems, or in the school library, doing voluntary jobs. One month later, Rita got straight As in a series of comprehensive tests and was awarded “the most popular student” in the school assembly. Her shining smile was brighter than ever, and young boys and girls began to gather around her.
One afternoon, Tina walked up to Rita, who was sitting under a tree and reading a book. “Hi, Tina. What makes you so happy every day You didn’t even have any friends.” Tina poured out her puzzles. Rita looked up with a familiar smile, “I feel every single day fruitful. I feel happy just because I’m on the way of being the one I want to be. That’s the secret.” Something hit Tina at that very moment. She turned back and headed home, without saying anything, not even goodbye. That night, Tina lay in bed and stared at the ceiling, replaying Rita’s words in her mind and lost in deep thought.
