At around 3, 000 meters above sea level in the Xiangguqing area of Yunnan Baima Snow Mountain National Nature Reserve, even young hikers often struggle with the altitude. Yet Yu Jianhua, now in his seventies, still climbs regularly. Once the best hunter in Tacheng Town, he became a forest ranger (护林员) at 45, devoting his life to protecting the endangered Yunnan golden hair monkey. His son, Yu Zhonghua, later joined him, and together they have safeguarded the species for over 30 years.
Decades ago, the monkeys were rarely seen. Established in 1983, the reserve aimed to save the species. Yu Jianhua’s first task was locating the monkeys. “I started searching in April 1995, but it wasn’t until March 1996 that I finally spotted them about 1 kilometer away,” he said. While searching, he took traps apart and rescued wildlife, gradually earning the monkeys’ trust. By 2005, he could approach them within 10 meters. He studied their behavior, from food to shelter choices, to inform conservation efforts.
Since 2008, several monkey families have settled in the Xiangguqing area, enabling research and education. Unlike his father, Yu Zhonghua expanded the work to include population monitoring, community management, and the training of 16 rangers. Their long-term observations have significantly advanced scientific conservation. Over the past decade, nearly 150 newborns have been added to the Xiangguqing population, with each family group maintaining 50 — 70 individuals. Nationally, the species has grown from 1, 000 — 1, 500 in 1996 to nearly 4, 000 today.
This summer, the reserve attracted educational groups, with rangers sharing their conservation efforts. While both father and son are devoted to their work, they hope to raise awareness about the endangered monkeys and inspire others to continue their mission. “Perhaps one day I won’t be able to climb these mountains anymore,” Yu Jianhua said. “I just hope more people will carry on the work.”

This month, the U.S. government proposed a rule that would limit what defines “harm” under the Endangered Species Act to only direct actions against wildlife, such as hunting, wounding or trapping. Destroying their habitats would no longer count.
Anyone who has ever seen roadkill littering U.S. highways should understand the fallacy in this logic: Species can survive only when they have space to live free from dangers caused by humankind.
Since the law took effect in 1973, the number of species listed as threatened or endangered has exploded to almost 1,700. Environmentalists are satisfied with the act’s power to block projects that could damage ecosystems, thus rescuing many species. But the scale of the threats to biodiversity — including climate change, foreign species and habitat loss — makes it essential to expand government’s conservation strategy beyond punitive (惩罚的) measures.
An estimated three-quarters of species listed under the law live on private land, and protecting them comes at a real cost. One study in California found that habitat protection for the red-legged frog caused land values to fall 48 percent. This discourages people from cooperating with conservation efforts and has even led people to destroy habitats to avoid restrictions on their property.
Why not use those same economic forces for good The government could give landowners financial motives to assist in conservation efforts. The Agriculture Department has been paying farmers to maintain soil health. The same could be done for private landowners whose properties are home to endangered species.
Costa Rica started such a program in 1997, and it is credited with helping to relieve deforestation (森林砍伐) there. Today, forest covers more than 50 percent of the country, up from a little over 20 percent in the 1980s. Imagine what could be accomplished if the United States adopted a similar strategy for preventing the loss of species.
28. What happened to the Endangered Species Act

B.Its range was narrowed.
C.Its rules were simplified.
D.Its content was enriched.
29. What does the underlined word “fallacy” in paragraph 2 mean

B.It harms landowners’ benefits.
C.It excludes creative measures.
D.It threatens red-legged frogs’ survival.
31. Why does the author mention Costa Rica
A.To measure its rate of forest coverage.
B.To show the causes of destroyed forest.
C.To present the results of its joint protection.
D.To display the success of financial motives.

Elaine recently bought a gorgeous stained-glass statement mirror on an online marketplace, and then she found she was rearranging her entire bedroom to match its luxurious aesthetic (美感) and color scheme. She didn’t have a bedroom redesign in her budget, but that wasn’t stopping her. Have you ever updated one thing in your home and suddenly found yourself with a laundry list of changes you want to make This phenomenon is called the Diderot Effect.
The phenomenon got its name from French philosopher Denis Diderot. In 1769, Diderot penned an essay describing the receipt of a new dressing gown, which sparked a series of impulsive (易冲动的) purchases that sank him into debt — and thus lending his name to this psychological phenomenon.
This isn’t just a consequence of 18th-century behavior, though. The Diderot effect is alive and well today. Don’t be too hard on yourself if you fall victim to the Diderot effect. Psychotherapist Dr. Daryl Appleton says it’s a very human response, similar to the feeling when you put on brand-new clothes, but then wear your worn-out shoes — the mismatch is uncomfortable. What’s happening beneath the surface is partly neurological (神经学的). When we seek something new, our brain releases more dopamine, often called our “pleasure chemical” that drives desire. So, that rush you feel when you start fixing the things around the shiny new object is not just aesthetics; it’s brain chemistry. We’re born to long for novel things.
The Diderot Effect can show up anywhere from your closet to your career. Therapist Dr. Alfonso Ferguson says, “Often, what’s really happening underneath is a desire to feel in harmony with one’s space — to finally feel a sense of pride, peace, or even safety that may have been missing in other parts of life.” It’s not always a bad thing to want your space to progress with you. But if it starts to feel compulsive, it can be pretty difficult to escape the cycle. You’ll keep chasing the next upgrade.
32. What is the main purpose of the first paragraph
A.To analyse reasons.
B.To make a comparison.
C.To lead in the topic.
D.To present viewpoints.
33. What is the motivation behind the Diderot Effect according to paragraph 3
A.An attempt to escape stress from one’s work.
B.A desire to achieve harmony in one’s life.
C.A rush to show off one’s wealth.
D.A biological urge to seek novelty.
34. What does the underlined word “compulsive” in the last paragraph mean
A.Unrealistic.
B.Uncontrollable.
C.Adaptable.
D.Casual.
35. What can be a suitable title for the text
A.When One New Thing Changes Everything
B.The Psychology Behind Chasing Harmony
C.How Our Daily Needs Help Fuel Endless Purchase
D.The Science of Holding Back Endless Consumption

Our house plants really need us to actively give them water. Still, we are sometimes too busy to water them. Fortunately, plants are fairly forgiving about their watering schedule. Therefore, it’s nothing to worry about if your watering routine is a little irregular. ___36___ So, take this as an opportunity to make each watering as effective as possible.
___37___ After watering your house plants, check that the soil is moist (湿润的), but not wet. Katie Wagner, a professor from Utah State University, says, “The very best check is putting your fingers in the soil to see if you feel that even moisture. The dirt should not be dripping with water, but you should be able to feel that it’s wet.”
Plants generally like to be warm. However, if you’re leaving for a long journey, letting your plants be a little colder than they usually would be and moving them out of the sun might be a good idea. ___38___
Our houses and apartments are certainly drier than the environments our plants grow in. Fortunately, there are many ways to increase the humidity (湿度) around a plant. You can place the plant in glass or clear plastic. ___39___ Do not place the plant itself in the water, as this could cause root rot.
___40___ For example, tending to my plants helped me recover from a tough layoff and adjust to the loneliness in 2018. If you are careful, your house plants will offer oxygen and companionship when you are able to get back to them.
A.When you water a plant, do so thoroughly.
B.There are some ways to make planting easier.
C.Most plants can weather the occasional drought.
D.You’ll probably be fine with this watering strategy.
E.You can put a basin of water or a humidifier near the plant.

It all started when I walked to a quiet corner of my neighborhood one afternoon. To my disappointment, I found an empty lot overgrown with weeds, where old furniture had been left and rainwater had gathered in muddy puddles (小水坑) on the ground. I stood there for a while, feeling sad about this wasted space. Then an idea came to me — what if we could turn this messy place into a small garden for everyone
That evening, I sent a message in our neighborhood chat group. I explained my plan and invited people to join me. Hours passed, but only two neighbors sent short replies saying “A good idea.” I felt a little discouraged. Just when I was about to give up, my phone lit up with a private message. It was from Mr. Wilson, an elderly man who lived alone in Building 3. I knew him by sight but had never spoken to him before. His message read: “I have some gardening tools and a few flower seeds. Can I help you ” I sent him a message, saying, “Yes. That's absolutely great.”
We met at the empty lot the next Saturday morning. Mr. Wilson brought not only tools but also a small hand- drawn map. He pointed and said, “We can plant sunflowers here because they love sunlight, and we can put some easy- to- grow flowers near the path.” I was surprised by his knowledge. As we started cleaning together, he shared stories about the small garden he used to keep in his hometown. I realized he missed those days deeply.
During the following weeks, we worked every weekend. The work was not easy. We had to remove the rubbish, clear the deep weeds and fill the muddy puddles with soil. Mr. Wilson showed me how to properly plant the seeds and water them. As we worked, more neighbors became interested. A young girl offered to paint signs for the garden; an old lady shared her gardening tips; and a couple helped build a simple fence.
