Buck did not read the newspapers, or he would know that trouble was coming.
In fact, trouble was on its way for every strong dog with warm long hair. This was because men, going through the Arctic darkness, had discovered a yellow metal—gold. And because shipping and transportation companies were advertising the discovery, thousands of men were rushing into the Northland. These men wanted heavy dogs, with strong muscles for working and thick coats to protect them from the cold.
Buck lived at Judge Miller’s house in the sunny-kissed Santa Clara Valley. There were big stables, low, grape fields, fruit gardens and a big swimming pool. Buck ruled over the whole kingdom. Here he was born and here he had lived the four years of his life. He protected the Judge’s sons and daughters at long midnight or early morning walks. On cold winter nights he lay at the Judge’s feet in front of the warm library fire. He was king—king over everything, crawled (爬行的), walked, or flew at Judge Miller’s place, including humans.
Buck was this kind of dog in the autumn of 1897, when the discovery of gold in the Klondike pulled men from all over the world into the frozen North. But Buck did not read the newspapers. He did not know that Manuel, one of the gardener’s helpers, was not to be trusted. Manuel loved to gamble (赌博). He believed he could win but he was doomed to failure.
On the night of Manuel’s betrayal (背叛), no one saw him and Buck went off through the fields. Buck imagined it to be a relaxing walk. They arrived at a little train. A man talked with Manuel and money passed between them. Manuel tied a piece of thick rope around Buck’s neck. Buck accepted it quietly. To be sure, it was unwanted, but Buck had learned to trust men he knew.
However, when the ends of the rope were placed in the stranger’s hands, he barked. Then the rope tightened painfully, his tongue hanging out of his mouth. Then his strength disappeared, his eyes grew dim (浑浊), and he knew nothing when the train pulled up. Two men threw him into the baggage car.

In Russia, if you give flowers as presents, you have to give an odd number of them (one, three, five, etc.) because even numbers of flowers are for funerals.
In Germany, if you are invited to dinner, flowers are good presents to take to your dinner hostess (女主人), but don’t take her red roses because it means you are in love with her. Do you know mountains that look like huge stone pillars (石柱) Many people feel surprised when they first see the special mountains in Zhangjiajie. How did these mountains form Let’s travel through time to discover their story.
Long ago, Zhangjiajie was under water. Rivers brought sand to the seabed. Year after year, new sand fell on the old sand. The sand layers (层) grew thicker (更厚的) and thicker like a giant cake baking in the oven, with each new layer pressing the old ones tighter. The heavy new sand pushed the old sand together. After millions of years, the sand became hard rock. The hard rock was sandstone.
Then, something amazing happened. The seabed slowly ascended and became dry land. The sandstone started breaking into big pieces.
Now came nature’s artists—wind and water. Strong winds blew against the sandstone, while rainwater made small holes (洞) in the stones. Like a knife cutting cakes, rivers flowed (流淌) through these holes and made them deeper. These two natural artists slowly changed the sandstone into beautiful stone pillars.
But this story isn’t over. Even now, wind and rain keep making the stone pillars smaller. Every year, these pillars lose a tiny bit of their height, like candles melting slowly. And then new cracks (裂缝) appear. Scientists say that after millions more years, these stone pillars will completely disappear. So we’re ▲ to see this natural wonder before it’s all gone.

第三节 语法填空(共10小题,每小题1分,满分10分)
Mount Qomolangma, standing at around 8,848.86 metres, is the world’s highest mountain above sea level. But do you know that 66 (it) height is growing Scientists say the huge mountain grows by as much as two millimetres (毫米) every year. Two millimetres is very tiny, 67 the change will be big over time.
In 68 recent study, researchers have suggested that Qomolangma is growing because of a river, the Arun. This powerful river 69 (run) along the Himalayas and washes away rocks and soil. Then a huge, deep gorge (峡谷) 70 (create). As there is now less ground material left in that area, the crust (地壳) becomes lighter as well. This allows the crusts 71 (push) against each other and go upwards. Many 72 (year) later, the whole process raises the height of the land—even big, heavy mountains.
73 makes Qomolangma grow so rapidly Researchers discovered that with a lot more water going through the Arun, the river would wash away more rocks and soil. As a result, the gorge becomes even 74 (big) in a shorter time, causing Qomolangma to grow more quickly. It is 75 (real) amazing to think about how nature can change the world’s highest mountain!
